  • Server goes totally jammed

    Hi
I'm running OS X Server 10.4.9 on a Mac Pro as a standalone server. Services enabled are: AFP, FTP, Firewall & Windows. The server also runs Retrospect Workgroup -backup server.
The problem is that occasionally - every two days, sometimes even a couple of times a day - the server goes totally jammed up: existing network connections slow down a lot or disconnect, new logins aren't possible because the server
can't be found. You can't even login using ssh.
Local login doesn't work either - when waking up the computer from screen saver, you wont even get the login window and the screen refreshes about 1frame / 10 sec. Hard drives are then working like crazy, when there shouldn't be anything particularily heavy going on.
So the only solution is to boot it using the power switch.
The situation is totally unbearable. Haven't found anything obvious reason from the logs. Anyone with any idea?
    Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi: I’m not criticising it just seems curious as why only that?
Umm... Isn't that just normal? The server has a
public ip, and it's being accessed remotely by our
    employees.
If you are going to be using your server as a gateway/router then it makes sense. NAT, DHCP & DNS and possibly VPN would have be to enabled. If everything sits behind a router based firewall then there is not much point. Judging by what you say: is remote access via command line and ssh or by VPN? If its via VPN then obviously its not your server handling it. Routers that support VPN connections will have Firewall/NAT built in and these will be active.
Again why the Firewall on the server as it does not seem to be doing anything?
BTW - Server logs show these kind of login attempts
    every now and then:
    DirectoryService[76]: Failed Authentication
return is being delayed due to over five recent auth
    failures for username: admin
Something to be worried about? There's no signs that
someone would have succeeded with those...
Absolutely. This could indicate a dictionary attack or possibly a failed login attempt locally. If you are the Server Administrator and you know your user base does not have command line knowledge then I would be suspicious. When you install OSX Server Remote Login is enabled by default. This allows for ssh connections to be made by administrators who wish to administer the server remotely and by the command line. Unless you have an absolute requirement to do this you should disable it. System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Login.
By default Root User is not enabled on OSX Client. It is on OSX Server. Again unless you have an absolute requirement to have this enabled, disable it. If you need to enable Root User for a specific purpose then you can re-enable it for that purpose, disabling it when you are done. /Applications/Utilities/Net Info Manager. Click the lock and authenticate, Security Menu > Disable Root User. Inspect your router and make sure that Port 22/23 are not open. Some Routers open these to allow for Remote Management.
I’m not an expert on this, but as I understand it hackers know this and use dictionary attacks (a brute force method that assumes that admin is the user name and tries numerous passwords until it hits on the right one) to gain access to your server. Again I am not an expert at this but what they do when they get there – generally – is leave something like a timed script that sends spam in one huge chunk. The Server reacts by allocating as much system resources and CPU time as it can to deal with the traffic, this can appear as if the Server has been jammed causing disconnects and unstable access.
Launch terminal and issue the top command. This will list all active processes running. Look at for amavisd or clamav and see what CPU usage is for these processes when the slow down occurs. This would be an indication that your server has been hacked and is being used to send spam. You can stop these processes by issuing sudo kill PID, where PID is the Process ID number. Alternatively if you are not comfortable with the command line you can use Activity Monitor in /Applications/Utilities folder. It’s the GUI for top.
Don’t worry and don’t panic, if you follow these basic security procedures you will be OK even if it turns out to be not a dictionary attack, these are still good best practice methods to employ.
One further question for you: have you had to reset the password for the Server Administrator account lately?
    Hope this helps – Tony

iTunes is totally frozen with multiple paints of same screen within itself. Also incredibly slow. Are there alternative players I can use with my iPhone, or must I use iTunes with my iPhone? iTunes is effectively unusably slow. I am using Windows 7.
I only use it once every few weeks and each time it is more disappointing than the previous time. does it run better on a Mac than Windows? Is this app really the future of media? Really?

I am using iTunes 11.1.3 -- The most recent version. When I select something from my albums it just freezes. I have restarted it a few times with same result.

  • ITunes U Total Download Number

How can I find out the total number of downloads for USF on iTunes U? I have only recently been receiving weekly usage reports but would like to know the total number of downloads USF on iTunes U has provided since the beginning of our endeavor (circa 2007).

I ran your feed against the W3C feed validator and it complained that 10 of its embedded enclosures contained malformed URLs. It may be that readers like Safari and Firefox are more forgiving. I'd have to check (just for chuckles) the feed itself and pull it apart to see what is whacked about the URLs.
    Thanks for your diligence,
I ran the feed against the same validator tonight and a few weeks ago when this started. It complains about that it has to use the full URL, which is listed there in the error message as https://lms.... I assumed it was spurious. Unless I'm interpreting it wrong (and I paste it here's for other's review), the message is:
line 16, column 6: url must be a full URL: https://lms.brocku.ca/access/content/group/BuildaPodcast/Podcasts/Isaak%20-%20Forums.mov (10 occurrences)
Line 16 of the feed is:
    <enclosure url="https://lms.brocku.ca/access/content/group/BuildaPodcast/Podcasts/Isaak%20-%20Forums.mov" length="78041442" type="video/quicktime" />
There's also a few of the itunes custom tags that are missing - but they've always been missing. Also, the feed is usable to so many other applications.
If the warning is valid, please let me know what you think should be done to the feed, I'll hand edit it, see if it works, then go from there.

  • Wiped computer and reinstalled iTunes but now jams up

I have a Windows XP computer running Media Centre Edition on Service Pack 3. It had the latest version of iTunes running my iPod with no problems but then the computer got a lot of viruses so I wiped the hard drive. After reinstalling the SAME version of XP and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes, it seemed to jam up everytime I open up the program. The install went through fine but when you double click to open the program it says there is a DEP erro (Data Execution Prevention I think?) and then it would come up witht he famous Windows message: "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close bla bla bla". A friend suggested uninstalling and then installing an older version of iTunes. So I uninstalled v10.??, and all the other Apple software including Bonjour and Quicktime, then restarted and downlaoded iTunes 9.2.1, installed that and no longer got the DEP error but still getting the "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close bla bla bla". So uninstalled everything again, restarted and went back to version 8.something and still getting the "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close bla bla bla". What can I do?! Is there something in the registry from when I first installed v10, which needs deleting in order to run an odler version?
    Cheers. G

  • My phone is totally jammed!!! Help!

I added this to another thread but think it needs its own to get recognized. Thanks
I'm currently living in NZ and have my iphone with me. I have no phone service but have been using it for music and email and such. I've been keeping it in airplane mode with wi-fi on. This really saves the battery. I updated itunes and then updated my iphone. Now it is totally stuck. My pc can't restore it. It won't restart on it's own. I went through all the offerings in te help section and still nothing. I saw in another thread that this had happened to others while in airplane mode and they fixed it by doing an emergency call and turning off the airplane mode. This allowed their itunes to recognise the phone. My phone doesn't even give me an option to do emergency call. Any thoughts? Any help?? Thanks a ton!

It has not been hacked/unlocked. I decided to not do that as I wasn't smart enough to make sure it wasn't ruining the phone. It has the sim that came with the phone. Any idea's how to open it??

  • ITunes hates Pearl Jam

I have a bizzare problem, I am unable to purchase anything by Pearl Jam from iTunes. It's an isolated problem, iTunes works fine for everything else and I continue to download from their service, but when I tried to complete my album for Ten, I got a "Network Timed Out" error. Thinking it was just that album, I tried getting individual songs, but still got the error message, and then I moved to entirely different albums with Pearl Jam but still they won't work. I have tried about a dozen times in the last month and have resorted to creating this post. I have checked my computers access given to iTunes and that's fine and even turned off the firewall to no avail. I AM ONLY EXPERIENCING ROBLEMS WITH PEARL JAM, ITUNES IS FINE WITH ALL OTHER ARTISTS.
P.S: I am aware that Pearl Jam can refer to semen, please no jokes and this is a genuine problem

I had a problem where iTunes would not preview or post-purchase download one specific song on an album where every other song was OK.
After doing some research with Google I turned off my security software and tried again. It worked.
If you have any type of Internet filtering on your machine in addition to your firewall, try turning it off before downloading. I was never able to figure out what data in the song kept it from being downloaded (the title was "Blue Jeans") but all I know is that it worked after I temporarily disabled the security software.

  • Help - moved itunes folders to external drive and now my itunes is totally

A few months ago, in order to free up space on my c drive, i had to purchase an external drive - everything i installed via itunes since that date has been on the hard drive and everything was fine.
Last night i needed more room on my C drive so i stupidly moved the remaining itunes folders from my C drive to my F drive - unfortunately, when i opened itunes it was blank.
i've tried a few things - including adding the folder from the F drive - and that retrieved about 80% of my music/videos and the last playlists i had - however, they were all missing songs - even if all the songs that should be included remained on my itunes
i began the tedious process of manually adding files back in but soon realized this doesn't help itunes consider this the same ipod as what's still on my actual ipod.
*What I'd like to do (if possible) is to wipe itunes clean and somehow restore everything on my ipod into itunes so that i retrieve not only the songs and videos but also the playlists that i've spent way too much time building. At this point i fear that the various components to my ipod are in too many files on my external drive to be easily restored another way (though if i'm wrong please let me know)*
sadly (as this story might suggest) I am borderline computer illiterate - I've read a few posts suggesting some sort of software online (something the apple help line also made an "off the record" remark about) - but I can't for the life of me figure out which i would use or how to do this without risking the contents of my existing ipod (which has the playlists and songs/video I want to reestablish).
*Can anyone possibly suggest how to best handle this and walk me through it in painstakingly basic and specific detail? I would be forever grateful.*
    Thanks

iTunes uses the iTunes Library files - in particular the iTunes Library.itl file - to keep track of where your song files are located as well as playlist and related information.
Most likely in moving your folders around iTunes has been confused to such an extent that it created a new Library file. With a bit of luck you might still be able to find the old file which would restore your old Library.
So the first thing you want to do is look around your computer and make a note of any iTunes Library.itl files you can find. Generally speaking you'll find them in the iTunes folders on your system and depending on how you've been moving the folders - i.e. whether you "cut" them or "copied" them - you may still find at least one one on your F: drive and some on your C: drive.
Having noted where they are you know want to check each of them out as described in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base. In following those instructions you want to select the Choose Library option and use the pop-up window that appears to zero in on the various .itl files you've located.
Remember that each Library file will show a different Library in iTunes - perhaps slightly different, perhaps completely different - and if the first one isn't what you're looking for you'll have to close iTunes and repeat the procedure by selecting one of the other .itl's.
    Post back for any clarification.

  • The latest version of ITunes has totally changed how I load music or photos on my IPod and IPhone.  It used to be I could highlight a song list  or cd from my library and drag it to the i pod icon and it would load.  Now, it's changed and I can't fig

I have a Macbook Pro operating system OSX 10.7.5  My Itunes version is 12.01.26.  Here's the problem:  with the older versions of ITunes I could connect a device and highlight and drag whatever music I wanted to load from my library to the device.  Now, there's a different process which I cannot fathom.  I don't want to sync my i-pod every time i want to add music; i don't want to restore my iPhone to do the same or to add photographs which were sent to me and then uploaded  to my computer.  Can anyone out there give me a step by step process on how to do these what used to be very simple procedures.  Thanks in advance.  Also, how do I contact someone in Apple who deals with consumer complaints?

    Hi Edward,
You should still be able to manually manage the music on your iPhone within iTunes. Make sure that when your iPhone is plugged in, look in the Summary tab to see if “Manually manage music and videos” is enabled and you can even you turn off Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected. Take a look at the first article below to give more information on that. As far as your other questions about calling someone, I have provided two options for you. If it is for feedback on iTunes, you can use the second link to give detailed feedback on what is going on. If you want to actually talk to someone, the last link has a list of numbers for you to call for any support or service that you may need.

  • How do I get iTunes to totally delete Podcasts I've listened to?

I listen to quite a few Podcasts on my iPod; I have them synced with iTunes so that once they have been listened to, they are deleted.
But this only deletes them from the library; it doesn't delete the files completely - this is actually more annoying than if they weren't auto-deleted at all, because now I have to go into the music folder and try to remember which ones I've listened to and delete them manually.
Is there any way of getting iTunes to delete the file completely?
    Thanks!

Mine get deleted all the way, on the ones where I want that.
On my podcast page in iTunes, I click on the Settings button down at the bottom. There is a default for all podcasts, but I change specific podcasts to "Episodes to Keep: All unplayed episodes". Then I right-click ont he main podcast and make sure it is set for "Allow Auto Delete".
After it has been listened to, the blue dot to the left goes away. Then the next time the podcast is updated, the files get deleted. They are not even in the recycle bin.
