Since this is an XP machine, which version of iTunes do you have installed? Is it the latest version?
Have you tried starting iTunes, attach the USB end of the cable, then while holding the home button on the iPod connect the 30-pin connector end of the cable to the iPod...that is the recovery mode but also should make iTunes see the iPod.
If that doesn't work you may need to take the iPod back and have it tested by the genius bar techs to make sure the connector is not bad.

The iCloud backup option has moved - it's now Settings > iCloud > Backup (it's towards the bottom of the list of items to back e.g. photos, mail, contacts, calendars ... Backup, Keychain, Find My iPad).

It's a problem with Gmail. There is another thread discussing it, but most would rather whine than try to fix it.
Nobody has figured out what is causing it, but there have been various suggestions.
One was to display the All Mail folder if you've hidden it.
You can delete by opt- delete. I think that will delete it immediately.
Another person looked in the user/Library/Mail/V2/ folder. He had duplicate account folders, having a sequence digit suffix. He deleted the duplicates and it fixed things.

Youtube HD won't work after downloading the latest version of Flashplayer (11.9.900.117)

I have a windows Vista, system: 32 bit, and I downloaded the latest version of adobe flash player (11.9.900.117)
But since I did this I can no longer watch youtube vids on HD with internet explorer.
They open with a low quality like 360 and when I want to put them on HD the vid just stops working, however if I go to watch on google chrome it will work normal, why is this?

Chrome has its own Flash Player Plugin ("PepperFlash"). It works independent of the ActiveX Flash Player Plugin in IE.
See:ActiveX Filtering in Internet Explorer to make sure that ActiveX controls aren't blocking ANY feature that Flash Player can access.
If that fails, I'd recommend moving to Firefox, as Chrome is an extreme rexource hog and will eventually grind your system to a halt if you get enough tabs open.

When I opened Firefox a message appeared that an update was available. Soon there after another message appeared that said and error occurred while attempting to update. It was suggested I download the update manually which I did.
After the download was complete, I tried to open Firefox and it opened with all of the menu items showing but the browser window was blank. (I had Google as my home page)
I could click on all the menu items but nothing dropped down.

My iPad and my phone are MUCH more unstable after downloading the latest update 8.3. Watch ESPN drops frequently. And other apps seem start and stop. Very annoying

If the problem continues you may want to consider backing up your iPad and restoring it to Factory Settings. This will reload a fresh copy of iOS.

I have the same problem and have been fighting with it for several days. I think the last thing that I did before this happened was to let Quicktime update itself. When I open itunes and click on store, the connecting bar gets halfway and then stops. That leaves me with the white store page, if I leave it alone for a bit, I see words as in names of singers and but no pictures.
I have ran the diagnostics and see no problems at all, no event logs in windows, no errors at all. I've un-installed itunes and re-installed but no change. I'm using Norton 360 from comcast. I have windows 7 pro 64 bit. Also, the help in itunes doesn't display.
I put in a ticket with apple and the response I got back basically told me to do what I've already done. I created a new user and have the same issue.
Any help at all will be very much appreciated. I think this started August. 8, 2011.

The only thing that is on there is my daughters One Direction albums! Any ideas? Was working fine before the update
