My iTunes won't open. It keeps force closing

Every time I try to open it just closes

Try rebooting the device:
press and hold the home and power buttons until the Apple icon is displayed, then let go.

  • Itunes won't open. it keeps saying cannot be opened while being updated.

i have a macbook pro.  i updated the os to mavericks maybe 2 months ago. now it is OS x version 10.9.4.  last night i was trying to open iTunes.  it said updates available so i clicked update.  i left my computer on since last night and everytime i try to open iTunes it keeps saying "itunes is being updated.  itunes cannot be opened while being updated."  is that normal? there's no other program running.  i am afraid to reboot the computer, i'm afraid that will cause it to crash.

Restart and see what happens. You won't be any worse off than you are now, as long as you have backups.

  • My itunes won't open, it keeps saying that it cannot open as some files are missing. It has been like it for months and I can't get it working

Please help, I keep  removing and installing itunes but I still can't open it. Every now and then it will let me in but I can't do everything that I should be able to do.

I gave my two cents on another forum post, but will also place it here.  I figure why not, more eyes and all that.
Not sure if you solved your problem, you probably did since there is no follow-up.  But since I am in the midst of this quaundary, I'll give you a little heads up.  I think 13010 might be when iTunes can't find a library.  This does not mean your music is missing as you can have your media folder (containing all your actual iTunes files) and your library folder (the database that organizes all of your media files) in separate locations.   I recently got a new computer and first pointed to the new media location and then also iTunes started to download the itunes library but for some reason deemed it damaged and may have removed it from it's original location as it can no longer find the library folder in that location.
My problem is this, no other forum post has helped me much in regards to the 13010 error.  I removed the extras and genius files and still got the 13010 error.  I reinstalled iTunes and still the 13010 error.  At this point I am willing to scrap everything just to get a factory fresh version of iTunes and then attempt to import all my old media into it and then reorganize it myself.  But as far as I know, there is no easy way to do this.

My iTunes won't open! It keeps saying 'The iTunes Library.itl is locked on a locked disk or you not have write permission for this file.' Please Help!

this may happen on external drives if:
The external drive was hotpluged (removed) without going the correct "eject" way
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
    First Aid for external drive
    Close iTunes
Unmount (eject) external drive the right way.
    Mount drive again
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up" This will force the filesystem to rescan the file structure of the drive and rebuilding the file system table and journaling file.
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive) restart iTunes
If your iTunes library is on your internal drive, this may happen
The system was not shoot down correct, e.g. "pulled the plug"
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
First Aid for internal hard drive
    Close iTunes
    Reboot system
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up"
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive)
    Reboot system, restart iTunes
If none of the above fixes your problem, post here.

  • Itunes won't open, won't force quit, won't anything

This problem started about a month ago and now it's critical.
When I click the itunes icon, it bounces and then freezes. itunes won't open. It also won't force quit. I can't shut down because, it says, itunes won't quit. I have to hold down the power button 7 seconds to shut down and then restart. My IT guy at work (who is a Mac person) showed me how to repair permissions and the first half dozen or so times this happened, that worked. Now it won't. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes. I've tried reinstalling and repairing permissions. I've rebooted and repaired and reinstalled.
This is the kind of thing I switched from PCs to get away with.
Does anyone have any ideas? I really need to be able to use itunes.
    Thanks,
    Teresa

Here are some basic to try in turn, see if any one will help:
Ensure that you have the latest version of the OS and Quicktime and iTunes.
    1. Delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    2. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

Just did the iTunes update that iTunes said was available, now iTunes won't open.  I just keep getting a Runtime Error message.
    R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.  Please contact the apps support team for more info.
Is anyone else having this problem?
I tried to re-install and got the following message:  iTunes was not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes.  Error 7 (Windows error 1114)
Does this mean I have now lost everything?

I just had the same error:
    R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.  Please contact the apps support team for more info.
I went to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925 and did a complete removal and reinstallation of iTunes. You MUST follow the directions here exactly...it's more than just iTunes that must be removed, and it MUST be done in the order in which the support article says.  I followed the exact instructions, and iTunes is back on my machine (no more C runtime error) and you do NOT lose your music...it's all in my library, as it was before.
    Good luck!

  • ITunes won't open - LiveType??

    Hi -
Just yesterday I started having a problem where iTunes won't open. I tried recreating the library - no luck.
Could LiveType be a problem here? How? Why is it even looking for this? Do I need to reinstall something (FCS) to get this all working again?
I looked in the crash log, and found this:
    05/05/2010 22:45:28 UserNotificationCenter[2140] Error loading /Library/QuickTime/LiveType.component/Contents/MacOS/LiveType: dlopen(/Library/QuickTime/LiveType.component/Contents/MacOS/LiveType, 262): Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/LiveType.framework/Versions/A/LiveType
    Referenced from: /Library/QuickTime/LiveType.component/Contents/MacOS/LiveType
    Reason: image not found

Try forcefully opening it by opening Terminal in
/Applications/Utilities and typing in the following
    command followed by return:
    /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes
    Does that work for you?
    -Ryan
    I tried this.
this is what terminal had after "return":
    DigiCoreAudioDriver> Found 9 entries in 'SupportedApps.txt'.
and iTunes does the same thing
control clicking iTunes just says application not responding and i can force quit etc., but it still wont open.
I read the post by KPMAC, the person who trashed the ByHost file,
and found a file similar, and tried trashing it and still no go.
i put the file back where it was, since i didnt get that same
message about that file being a problem.
    any other ideas?
i hope that i am doing the terminal trick correctly.
if i try that, it tries to open iTunes, and i get the same result,
and then i wait. then after a long wait i force quit iTunes,
    and terminal reports: Terminated
    please help if you can.
this is really frustrating and i have had this problem for a couple
    of months now.
i also have a digidesign 001, with protools LE 6.4.
and i have read the issues with protools, tried those suggestions
also to no avail, but those problems were with different protools
devices, etc. and itunes and protools have both been on this
computer for a few years. Quicktime also no longer works,
as i have read that others have this same problem.
    thank you for your time

  • ITunes won't open after OS update to Yosmite

ITunes won't open after OS update, ITunes has been updated, it won't open or bounce. It will not allow me to move it to trash or reinstall it. I have already updated to OS X Yosmite two times as directed by apple, I have rebooted in safe made as well as Command/Option/P/R before start up. I have opened console/system log to see if there is anything going on but when I click on Itunes nothing happens, not even so much as half a line of script. I'm stumped. If I wanted someone to tell me to turn it off and on again I'd just watch IT Crowd. please help

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities
If you head into your applications folder and locate iTunes. Right click iTunes and show package contents. In there there will be a contents folder --> MacOS --> double click on the iTunes terminal icon. This should force iTunes to open via a terminal window and at the very least it will tell you what it is getting stuck on.

  • ITunes won't open due to Quicktime error

I recently updated iTunes, and iTunes won't open. It says
"Quicktime version 7.0d0 is installed, iTunes requires Quicktime version 7.1.3 or later. Please reinstall iTunes."
Well, I tried redownloading iTunes and just the latest Quicktime, but I keep getting the message.
I tried clearing my temp files but nothing else will work. Do I have to uninstall iTunes completely, and if so, what do I do about my library?

"Quicktime version 7.0d0 is installed, iTunes requires Quicktime version 7.1.3 or later. Please reinstall iTunes."
let's try swapping out your QuickTime again. we'll take a few additional explicit precautions this time.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

  • ITunes won't open after installing update for 10.4

I updated my iTunes to the most recent version and restarted my computer. When my computer turned back on, I tried to open iTunes but it just keeps giving me the "The application iTunes quit unexpectedly" message and asks me to either ignore report or relaunch. Every time I click relaunch, the message comes up again. My OS is Mac OSX Version 10.5.8. Anyone know what to do?

    hello Nevada!
After installing the latest itunes update, itunes
won't open at all. I click on it and it just won't
    open.
are you getting an error message? if so, what does it
    say?
or are you getting no error messages whatsoever? if
so, could you let us know the results of the
    following observations?
reboot your PC. open Task Manager to the Processes
Tab. now try to launch itunes again.
does an itunes.exe process appear in Task Manager? if
so, does it persist in there, or does it disappear
    after a few seconds?

b noir - i have been following your advice and i want to thank you for taking your time to try and solve these problems for ipod users.
i have been following this message board each day for the past week - ever since my iTunes stopped working. i have not yet seen anyone who is receiving the same error message as myself.
like most others, i downloaded the recent update for iTunes - since then, iTunes will not open. i have tried most of the other proposed solutions to no avail, such as downloading a stand-alone version of quicktime, making sure my msconfig start-up has the correct check marks, etc.
the iTunes set-up completes with no problem - i have tried installing by saving the file to my hard drive and then running and also by running the program straight from the download window. same results.
once i go to open iTunes, i receive the following error message: "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. if you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem." Then I click "Send Error Report" just hoping I will receive a required update to make this work.
i was wondering if you could attempt to help me resolve this issue? i have my music saved to my external hard drive, so i am in no danger of losing my music. however, i need to open iTunes to update my iPod.
thanks in advance for your help.

  • Another itunes won't open problem

for the past week, itunes won't open. i last downloaded from the music store on 5/7. i also updated windows with the current new microsoft windows updates. i've done system restore as many times as it would allow but can't seem to go back far enough. i keep itunes on a removeable hard drive and am thinking about putting itunes on my permanent C drive and importing the library (can this even be done?), then uninstalling it from the removeable drive and re-installing and exporting it ... but is there something easier than that? oddly, when i first did system restore, tried to open itunes, was told there were files missing, reinstalled itunes and it still wouldn't open and i would get an error message during the quicktime install to make sure it is installed properly in the computer. so i uninstalled and reinstalled quicktime 7, but for some reason, i also have a 32 bit quicktime program in my add/remove program list, but it never gets removed by the new installs, even the standalone quicktime. it appears the itunes open is aborted by something and i get a "send error to microsoft message". the line the error is occuring in cannot be found when i search for it on my hard drives. the itunes library exists on the removeable drive, but i cannot play anything from it. i have tried several things listed in these forums including checking permissions several ways, going into the msconfig, reinstalling itunes, reinstalling quicktime through both itunes and the standalone. i do use my computer to remotely connect with my heavily firewalled business server. could it have done something to my home computer? i have turned off my internet security, done spyware and virus scans, and still can't find anything. any other ideas out there?

    hiya!
reinstalling quicktime through both itunes and the
    standalone.
do you get an error message when you try doing a QT
standalone install? if so, what does it say? include
error message numbers if you're getting any.
    love, b
no error message at all on either install and says it is installed fine. when i try to open quicktime it says it's loading forever but never opens. the closest thing to an error message is when i check the microsoft send error details and it refers to a line in a systems local folder. unfortunately i am not at home and cannot send you the detail.

  • My Itunes won't open on my computer

I have a macbook pro, and for the past two days my itunes won't open. I keep getting an error message stating "The itunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred. (13010)"
I restarted my computer, i uninstalled and reinstalled, but all to no avail. I really don't want to lose my music!!
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks...

Think of iTunes as a CD player that's broken. Just because you broke your CD player (or replaced it, as reinstalling implies) doesn't mean that you don't still have all of your CDs. They're two different things stored in two different places. The music is all in tact in the iTunes Music folder while iTunes sits broken in the Applications folder.
Mine is broken too. Supposedly deleting the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" file will fix this problem. It works for most people. Just do a spotlight search for it.
