My "iTunes won't open"-problem solved!

Hey guys! With not so much help here from the forums, and with a **** of a luck, my iTunes just started. For the first time in a week and after days of frustrating struggle. I yet again want to thank Rachyl here on the board for helping out. She didn't point out what solved it, but was the only one who wrote in my original thread.
Original post with lotsa ideas that didn't work found on http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1417362
I don' really know what did it, but here's what happend before the program finally launched:
- Un-installed QuickTime (Afterwards opened the Microsoft CleanUp thing and QuickTime wasn't in the list btw)
- Ran the iTunes Installer and chosed repair which installed QuickTime.
- Double clicked the iTunes icon - The program of course didn't open.
- Downloaded the Anapod Explorer, furious and beaten. The trial asked for some code do access the iPod which I hadn't (tried an old cracked version so that I'd know if the problem really was software related only - Wouldn't buy the program if it wouldn't work anyway).
- Uninstalled Anapod without being able to really try it out. Seemed to have som cool features though.
- Went on this forum to see if anyone had replied. Found my thread on the 11th page, without any news. Was reminded by someone that mentioned House Call, and since my Norton is disabled since a week back, i decided to try it.
- Trying to surf and chat while the Trend Micro application (House Call) runs. The computer almost freezes completely (5 min to swich windows)
- Press my on/off button on the computer to force it to swich off. Then I start it immediately and this is were I think the magic happens:
The computer automatically launches the Check Disk function (CHKDISK). It runs several tests and seem to re-organize some files and modifying corrupt ones including one with "APPLE" and i believe also "ITUNES" in its filename
- Windows opens, and the first thing that pops up is the iTunes license agreement (because of my reinstall/repair). Then it opens. All music is there, the iPod is immediately recognized and I can access the Music Store.
... and I post this thread. Hope it'll help somebody. I wouldn't say it's any parts fault, so I'll blame both Apple and Microsoft!
I don't know where to activate the CHKDISK manually in Windows, but I'll guess someone of the forum heroes can do that if you are to lazy to look yourself...

  • Itunes won't open - problem with visualizer?

For some reason Itunes won't open for me - I have had it for ages, never a problem, but I got Leopard last week and now Itunes has crashed. When i try to open it it freezes and then closes, with an error message that says 'the problem may have been caused by the ItunesX Visualizer plug in'.
Any advice on how to fix this? I have uninstalled and reinstalled both itunes and Quicktime, but nothing seems to work.

Same problem here! I'm going crazy. I did those two things you did and NOTHING, nada, help us!

  • Another itunes won't open problem

for the past week, itunes won't open. i last downloaded from the music store on 5/7. i also updated windows with the current new microsoft windows updates. i've done system restore as many times as it would allow but can't seem to go back far enough. i keep itunes on a removeable hard drive and am thinking about putting itunes on my permanent C drive and importing the library (can this even be done?), then uninstalling it from the removeable drive and re-installing and exporting it ... but is there something easier than that? oddly, when i first did system restore, tried to open itunes, was told there were files missing, reinstalled itunes and it still wouldn't open and i would get an error message during the quicktime install to make sure it is installed properly in the computer. so i uninstalled and reinstalled quicktime 7, but for some reason, i also have a 32 bit quicktime program in my add/remove program list, but it never gets removed by the new installs, even the standalone quicktime. it appears the itunes open is aborted by something and i get a "send error to microsoft message". the line the error is occuring in cannot be found when i search for it on my hard drives. the itunes library exists on the removeable drive, but i cannot play anything from it. i have tried several things listed in these forums including checking permissions several ways, going into the msconfig, reinstalling itunes, reinstalling quicktime through both itunes and the standalone. i do use my computer to remotely connect with my heavily firewalled business server. could it have done something to my home computer? i have turned off my internet security, done spyware and virus scans, and still can't find anything. any other ideas out there?

    hiya!
reinstalling quicktime through both itunes and the
    standalone.
do you get an error message when you try doing a QT
standalone install? if so, what does it say? include
error message numbers if you're getting any.
    love, b
no error message at all on either install and says it is installed fine. when i try to open quicktime it says it's loading forever but never opens. the closest thing to an error message is when i check the microsoft send error details and it refers to a line in a systems local folder. unfortunately i am not at home and cannot send you the detail.

b noir - i have been following your advice and i want to thank you for taking your time to try and solve these problems for ipod users.
i have been following this message board each day for the past week - ever since my iTunes stopped working. i have not yet seen anyone who is receiving the same error message as myself.
like most others, i downloaded the recent update for iTunes - since then, iTunes will not open. i have tried most of the other proposed solutions to no avail, such as downloading a stand-alone version of quicktime, making sure my msconfig start-up has the correct check marks, etc.
the iTunes set-up completes with no problem - i have tried installing by saving the file to my hard drive and then running and also by running the program straight from the download window. same results.
once i go to open iTunes, i receive the following error message: "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. if you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem." Then I click "Send Error Report" just hoping I will receive a required update to make this work.
i was wondering if you could attempt to help me resolve this issue? i have my music saved to my external hard drive, so i am in no danger of losing my music. however, i need to open iTunes to update my iPod.
thanks in advance for your help.

  • ITunes won't open after latest OSX update

AFter latest OSX update iTunes won't open.  Reinstalled iTunes.  Reinstalled OSX update.  When I click on icon in applications or in finder nothing happens.

This solved my question by Linc Davis.......
According to multiple reports on this site, Apple Support has given the following instructions to others who had a similar problem. I can't confirm that this procedure works or that it's necessary, but it won't leave you any worse off than you are now.
    First, back up all data.
Select the iTunes icon in the Applications folder and open the Info window. Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner to unlock the settings.
In the Sharing & Permissions section, change the Privilege setting for each Name in the list to Read & Write. Close the window. If the settings aren't visible, click the disclosure triangle on the left so that it points down.
You should now be able to drag the iTunes application to the Trash and empty. Your iTunes data won't be affected.
Click the iTunes link at the top of this page, download the installer package and run it.
If iTunes still doesn't launch, or if you can't complete the procedure, reinstall the OS.

  • ITunes won't open after update; MacBook Pro, Mac OSX 10.6.8, iTunes version 11.1.5

iTunes won't open after update - help, please; MacBook Pro, Mac OSX 10.6.8, iTunes version 11.1.5.

i had a problem similar to yours and better yet, i have the fix for it. i downloaded maverick 4 months ago and was without itunes ever since. all itunes icon did was bounce. itunes would never open and whats more, is when i would try to update it, i would get a "thank you for downloading itunes!" page , but the download would never work. so i scoured the net for solves. nothing that worked. <4 months later> then last night i took a new approach. i decided even though maverick would not allow me to uninstall itunes, i would find a way to uninstall itunes. then i would reinstall back to 11.1.5 i was successful and heres what i did.
    step one-
Back up your iTunes Library.itl file, found under ~/Music/iTunes
(even tho i didnt, i only had 3 artists in there at the time. and they didnt get erased but i advise you back up just in case.)
    step two-
download itunes 10.7 from apple. i used this link Download it from Apple here
(i pulled the link from Aarons website (awesometast.com). you download 10.7 however you want but i used the link above and have had no issues).
although im not sure you need to do this step ( you may be able to download 11.1.5 itunes without 10.7, i did because i was following intructions from http://awesometoast.com/downgrading-to-itunes-10-7-from-itunes-11-on-osx/
    step 3-
    open Terminal
    step 4-
enter in these 3 commands hitting return after each line. 1st line nothing seems to happen, 2nd line nothing seems to happen and 3rd line gives you a warning and requires password to continue. when i did it, my password didnt appear as i entered it and i hit return without looking, so i entered it in again, although im not sure i had to the 2nd time.
    killall iTunes
    killall "iTunes Helper"
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/
    step 5-
drag off and dump the itunes icon (which now has the ? shadow in it) off your dock.
    step 6-
install 10.7 itunes you downloaded earlier. (not sure if this part is neccesary. you may be able to just download 11.1.5 but i downloaded 10.7 because i was following Aarons steps.) itunes now works.
    step 7-
go to apple and update to 11.1.5 itunes. install it. open it and you have itunes 11.1.5 in perfect working order. assuming you have a decent internet speed for the downloads, the whole process takes very little time.
with those steps above, you can solve itunes just bouncing and not launching issues and also the "thank you for downloading" and nothing downloads issue. enjoy. also i would like to give a shout out to http://awesometoast.com and thank Aaron for the knowledge that enabled me to get itunes back into my life.

  • Itunes won't open after newest update

I recently updated itunes on my macbook to the newest version. Since the update, I cannot get itunes to open. I updated my iTunes to the most recent version and restarted my computer. When my computer turned back on, I tried to open iTunes but it just keeps giving me the "The application iTunes quit unexpectedly" message and asks me to either ignore report or relaunch. • My iTunes won't open after partial upgrade.

Hello, I recently tried to download the latest version of Itunes but got a message during the middle of download saying I didn't have enough memory to complete it. I immediately hit cancel and now my Itunes won't open! Everytime I try to open it I get a message saying, "A required Itunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall Quick Time." I removed some programs to free up some space. I reinstalled Quick Time but I'm still getting the same message. I found my library under My Music, iTunes, iTunes Music, but how can i get it to open. Can someone help, please?

I had similar problem this time and last time when I upgrade/update iTune, and subsequently solved the problem through the help of this person. You may give it a try and see if this works for you. It works for me now and then. Good luck.

  • ITunes won't open and a Windows error message pops up

I downloaded iTunes 10.2.2.12 awhile ago.  It worked fine the first time.  Ever since then, whenever I plug in my ipod, my laptop recognizes and says it's syncing but iTunes won't open.  I double click on iTunes and I get an error message from Windows saying that an error has occurred and it needs to close iTunes but it never even opens up.  (The message doesn't give any error codes.)  I've tried completely uninstalling iTunes and all its components and then reinstalling it but I get the same error message.  I have Windows XP 2002 Home Edition SP 3.  Please help.  Thanks.

    Many thanks.
Yes, it is an "iTunes has encountered a problem" error.  The ModName: dnssd. dll        The ModVer: 2.0.5.0     Offset: 0000246c
With that one, by way of experiment, let's try disabling your Bonjour Service.
In your Start menu, right-click My Computer and select "Manage".
    Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Perhaps maximise the screen to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the Bonjour Service and select "Properties".
In the General tab, set the Startup type to "Disabled":
    ... and click OK.
Restart the PC and try launching iTunes again. Does it launch properly this time?
