Hi thesilverunicorn,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If you are unable to update iTunes through the menus on your Windows computer, it may be necessary to remove iTunes and all of its components in the correct order. Once removed you can install fresh and have the latest version of iTunes.

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
iTunes
Apple Software Update

Bonjour

Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.

  • Itunes won't sync to my iPhone 4. It says my phone can't be recognized.

can anyone tell me what to do? itunes will not let me sync my phone to put pictures on my phone.

It is not devices, it is computers only. You can have up to 5 computers authorized with the same iTunes account.
The computer you are using is not activated with your iTunes account with iTunes? If not, is a computer available that is activated with your iTunes account? You can deactivate all computers from one computer that is activated following by activating the computer you are using now.

thought that it was possible to have the same iTunes library on any machine that was authorised, a kind of cloud-iTunes I guess.
That would convenient, but sadly it is not the case. Sorry!
Either way your welcome and best of luck!

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.1.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 7.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.
     Cheers, Tom

  • My smart playlist in iTunes won't sync with my iPhone 4S

Like the title says, there are 3 playlists that won't sync to my iPhone (all Smart Playlists). I have it set up to where my "entire music library" syncs to my iPhone. Can anyone help me out?

  • ITunes won't sync music to iPhone 6 Plus

On my old 5S 32GB I had iTunes Match turned on.
I just got a 64GB 6 Plus, set up by restoring from my 5S iCloud backup. Since I now have 64GB of space, I decided to have all my music locally again, so I turned off iTunes Match.
I plugged my 6 Plus into my Mac and told iTunes to Sync All Music. I have about 20GB (3600 songs) of music, and I set iTunes to convert it to 128kbps when syncing, so I expected it to take a while. The blue bar at the bottom (Audio) indeed showed I'd now have 20GB of Audio on my iPhone.
However, the sync went really quickly, and when I checked my 6 Plus, there was no music on it.
I plugged it back in, and the blue bar had gone (i.e. saying there was no audio on the phone).
I restarted Mac and iPhone, tried again. This time it seemed to be taking ages to sync, so I went to bed and left it. I got up this morning and sync had finished. I checked my phone, and all my albums are there, but there's no artwork, every song is greyed out, and has a Stop button next to it.
    Any idea what's going on?
iPhone 6 Plus running 8.0, Mac Mini running latest OS X 10.9.5 and latest iTunes 11.4. Note that iTunes Match is not, and never has been, enabled on the Mac Mini.

I am having the same issue. My new iPhone 6 plus, with iTunes Match, will not sync with my macbook pro. I keep getting a message stating the sync failed due to some songs not authorized for my computer. All of the songs were purchased under my account. So it won't sync. I need to sync my tones to my phone and I can't. I am up to date on all software updates for both.
Did you find an answer to your problem? Has anyone else had this issue?

  • ITunes won't sync or backup iPhone 4s (os 5.1)

In preparation for the iPhone 6 I decided to back up my iPhone 4s running ios 5.1. It's been a while since I've done a back up but it's always gone smoothly. Now nothing happens.
I open iTunes and plugged in the iPhone (it gets recognized by iTunes and a I can see all the info/content). Then I attempt a manual backup ("Back Up Now"),  iTunes starts to sync but it stops right away and the backup doesn't proceed, no error messages. I tried backing up my iPad 2 (ios 5.1) with the same results.
I was running an old version of iTunes and figured updating to the latest version (11.4) might solve the problem but the same thing happened to both devices.  I ended up updating the iPad 2 to ios 7.1.2 with no problems and it did the backup as part of the update.
    I'm running OS X 10.6.8 on a MacBookPro1,1 (Intel Core Duo, 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM).
I've searched the discussion boards but can't find anyone mentioning this specific issue.
Could this just be a conflict between ios 5 and iTunes? I'm reluctant to update the iPhone to ios 7 just to get the back up (the screen is cracked and I can barely navigate with the ios I'm familiar with, just want to hang on to it long enough to get a new phone).
    Any thoughts?

    Hi feet_first,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there is an issue backing up your devices in iTunes on your Mac. Do you see Device backups in iTunes preferences, on the Device tab? If not, the article linked below provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting suggestions that will resolve most backup issues for iOS devices.

  • ITunes won't sync music to iPhone

I have been trying for 5 days to sync music to my iPhone 4 6.1.3 I have tried ticking all of the different boxes. I have made sure "Sync Music" is ticked. When I press apply it comes up with 4 steps and then says syncing finished. But it doesn't actually copy the music. I have uninstalled itunes, reinstalled it, restarted my phone, turned the wifi off and nothing seems to be working.I don't think the problem is with my iTunes because it syncs absolutely fine to my iPad. I'm running out of ideas. I was thinking of resetting my iPhone but I don't want to lose my app history because it might not work. I don't really know what to do. Please help.
