My Iwork and my Office don't open PC Office documents!

Hello everyone! I've got a degree in computer science, but I'm new to mac. I've come from the pc.
I've got a extrange problem in my macbook.I've been surfing to the internet for a solution during 1 hour. Also I've phone apple care suport during 45 minutes and I still don't have the solution. I'm kind of desesperate.
The problem is that Iwork (and also Office for Mac) just don't open my PC Office files (any of them), not xls, doc, ppt... I can open them in the PC, not in the mac.
It just appears an "invalid file" error. The file never opens.
If my Mac it's not going to be able to open MS PC Office documents it's just going to be a nice paperweight, cause my job requieres those files. Got thousands of them, and I recieve daily.
To put all my PC office file to my macbook I used an external USB hard drive. I've read on the internet that sometimes the "doc" document gets corrupted when it's stored in the USB HD. I used it right (removing saftely), so I think that it's not this, but I've got nothing more... even apple support don't know nothing.
I like my notebook, but I've to solve this problem. If it's not solved I'll have to return again to €!$$?? windows and I will have lost a lot of money.
Thanks everyone.

I've been looking into it and it seems problem is not only with .doc and .xls documents.
For some reason, many files of my folder "documents" (and also all the "sub"folders) are, in a way or other, corrupted.
I've tried 2 times to put all this information from windows (in win files are not corrupted, I've checked it) to my USB external HD and then I put them into my mac. During this process files become corrupted!
And it's so strange, because I've copied more files from my pc to my mac this way and seem they're working right. Anyway now I'm trying with diferent file systems and see what I get.
So it's not problem with pages o office mac, it's problem of the MAC OS X or my external hard drive.

I just updated my MAC operating system and when I went to open a recent document in numbers, the document that opened had none of my data and was formatted differently.  Can I get my document with all my information back?

I suggest the easy stuff first:
    1) quite Numbers and restart Numbers
    2) reboot the computer
After that try opening the same document in another user space

  • Easiest way to send multiple iWork attachments as Office documents

My grandmother just switched from a PC to a Mac, and I suggested that she use iWork instead of Office for Mac. Now she is getting used to iWork, but all of the people that she works with use Office.
When she wants to send multiple documents, I told her that she has to open each one and got to Share => Export -> Word and save them to her desktop. After that she needs to attach each one to the email.
As I'm telling her this, I think to myself "There has to be a better way..."
So, I come here to ask: Is there a better way? Is there some way to make Mail convert these .pages documents into .docx, .keynote into .pptx, etc.? I always thought that's what "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" did, but I have found out that
    it does something totally different.

There is no easy way to convert iWork documents to Office and then send them via email. In short, your options are as follows:
In Pages, don't save as .pages files, but rather as .docx files. To do this, your grandmother will have to use "save as" every time she saves the file, because "save" will simply save a .pages file. You cannot set the default file format
in Pages to be a .docx file.
Continue as she is doing now, and convert each file individually from .pages to .docx when she needs to send it to someone.
Buy a legal copy of Office:Mac.
If your grandmother works with people who use Office, the best solution is for her to use Office:Mac. Pages can open Word documents, and it can save as a Word document as well, but this conversion is limited. If the documents have a lot of formatting, they
are likely to lose the formatting in the conversion. If she receives Word documents with macros, she will not be able to use or modify the macros. Keynote to PowerPoint and Numbers to Excel have similar issues. We'll leave aside that it sounds like you have
    violated the
EULA for iWork in associating someone else's Apple ID with your grandmother's new Mac.
"Send Windows-Friendly Attachments" does not convert files from one type to another, and you probably don't want Apple Mail (or any other application) performing such a conversion without telling you about it. It simply changes the encoding that
it uses for sending the files via email.
There is no method to batch-convert files from Pages to Word. Pages' AppleScript and Automator dictionaries don't have commands for such a conversion.

  • Using Command and N is supposed to open a new Document in Preview?

I know that by copying something and then moving to Preview and clicking Command + N should create a new pdf document in Preview. How is it I cannot do this? I cannot open Preview as a blank open application. On opening Preview, I get the grey screen/window that allows me to open an existing document from My Mac or iCloud, but Command + N does nothing. Because of the silly system of not being able to print a selection, I am trying to copy to a pdf format in Preview via the method mentioned above and found in these discussion groups.
Is there some setting to Preview that allows me to do this and open a clipboard copy so that I can print the thing? I am trying in Safari and the answer appears to be a lemon!

    Jerry
In trying to get over the problem I copied from Safari, opened Pages and a new blank document, created a Text Box, and pasted the clipboard in to it.
The net result was that in copying that Text Box, then partially opening Preview, I could then create the document in it. So again, I have to say that I may as well just copied the lot to Pages and printed that rather than go through the Preview hoop.
I have to say, I do think the lacking of a "Print Selection" sequence is a bit of a Bloomer from Apple, but I suspect there are an awful lot of people who have informed them of the short-comings!
As you may have guessed, I am relatively new to iMAC and its' little foibles!!

  • I try to save a document, when I try to open it later it opens in Mail as a letter to write and send.  I cannot open the saved document.

When I click save for a document it goes to Mail and when I try to open it it opens as a fill in letter to be sent.  Why does it go to Mail?  Why can it not be opened?

In Finder, do a Get Info on that file, (CMD+i), look for open With line, what does it say there for an App?

    They're the same.

Yes, especially if you save the document in Word format.
You can also save it in PDF and a simple text file (but the layout could be modified if you open it in Office).

  • What is the difference between iwork and microsoft office for mac?

I was wondering which one is worth the money.

+I was wondering which one is worth the money.+
It depends on why you want iWork or Office. If you work in a group where Office is the main collaboration app, you need it and it's worth it. If you work independently and don't plan to do much collaboration with Office users, but you still need a nice productivity suite, iWork might be a bargain for you.
There are many situations where buying both Office and iWork is the right choice. If you're not sure what you will do with either one, save your money and use TextEdit. If your needs are very specific, there are many third-party apps that may suit you better than either iWork or Office. If you describe your needs, there are many users here who will be eager to offer specific suggestions.

  • Discrepancies between iwork and microsoft office when viewing

i have saved a document created on iwork as a microsoft word document. However, when opened from microsoft office, the document appears differently - the layout has been changed. Specifically, the content from page one on the iwork file spreads onto page two of the work file, if that makes sense. Is there a way to prevent this? It isn't ideal as it messes up the flow of the document and makes it look messy. Thanks

Even if you maintained exactly the same version of all the fonts which is as close as you are going to get, the difference in rendering engines will mean things will move and some features will not transfer at all.
    Correct, of course.
Interestingly, for the poor folks who have produced Microsoft OpenType fonts for OpenType line layout, the problem is that Microsoft Word customers expect to use Microsoft Word as appearance format. This means not only that the font must be enabled for editable embedding, but that as well the simple CMAP Character Map shaping as the supplementary GSUB Glyph Substitution shaping must be communicated so that the measure of the line does not change when one user enables ligation and passes that Word file to another user.
The future for fonts is that full embedding is enforced in appearance-oriented page description models such as PDFXML and XPS, just as tagging of source character strings in the universal character set using unique markers for writing systems is enforced in these models. This direction in development will only work if the direction of demand is changed by education of everyday endusers with regard to replacing the broken Bics on the market with Montblancs -:).

  • When I updated to Mavericks, both iWorks and Microsoft Office stopped working!

For whatever reason, all of iWorks now "unexpectedly quits", and all of Microsoft Office doesn't "respond". Very frustrating! All my other programs, some of them specialty ones, seem to have faired the upgrade with flying colours, but these crucial core ones I use regularly didn't. In the case of iWorks, I noticed that my older versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are still in my Applicartions folder, but are now inexplicably listed as "copies". Wht's that about? Anyone have any suggestions??

Yes, along with the Mavericks update, all three of the iWork applications, Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, updated as well. The older versions became "Numbers copy", etc, etc in my Application folder. Unfortunately however, the new fancy versions, with the new icons, keep quitting almost immediately upon opening them. Very frustrating!! I noticed that through the App Store it indicates they are 'installed", and won't let me uninstall and retry. Of course, If I delete them, I found out they cost $19.99 each to install. Very annoying. How does one get around this???

  • Safari and some apps don't open

Safari and some other apps do not open after i have 'reset all settings'

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
