My JVC HDD camcorder works with iDVD and iMovie

HOOOORAAAYYY,
With the help of people on this discussion list,
I have able to convert my movies from MPG2, which is the format of my JVR HDD camcorder to DV which is used by iMovie and iDVD.
It was pretty easy, basically one needs to get Quicktime MPG2 from Apple, either at a store or download it from
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/update/
for about $20.00
then the conversion program at
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
is free
the whole thing works like a charm!
thanks sooooo much for all the help.

Thanks for your comments....I really appreciate it! I understand that the Mini DV is the best option for someone whose priority is high quality video, but I also understand that importing the video from a tape is a 'real time' process..... requiring an hour of time for every hour of video. Or, have I been misinformed?
For someone who would like a camera that is simple to use, I can't help but think that the HDD camera is the best option. And, once the mpeg-2 files are converted to a format that iMovie can understand, is there any reason the video can't be edited? Please explain, if this is the case.
Happy New Year!

Is the camcorder JVC GZ-EX210 compatible with iMovie?

I should add, my answer above is for "intermediate" or editing codecs. These are high quality codecs that preserve as much quality as possible in the editing process. Once you have finished editing, you would convert (or compress) to a delivery codec. THe intermediate codecs are too large to stream over the internet, or to play on your iphone, so you would convert.
The best codec for this purpose is h.264, which provides a really good quality at a relatively low data rate, This means good quality with a relatively small file.
h,264 is a subset of the MPEG4 standard.
A h.264 movie can live in a MOV container, an MP4 container, a M4V container, and perhaps others, like AVI.
By default, iMovie creates h.264 files in the m4v container for LARGE and smaller. For 720P and 1080P. it creates h.264 in a MV container.
You can tweek the defaults by SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME

  • I am trying to work with idvd or imovie.Help

I found a dvd of our river cruise we went on in 2009  It is called TSITFAT and before I try to import it I am wondering if it is for an apple computer.  Does anyone know?  I had a pc at the time and I'm afraid to import it even if I figure out how to do it.....Thanks in advance

The only thing I found was this:
    http://www.fixya.com/support/t8037060-alright_samsung_slim_external_dvd
Apparently it has to do with a Windows drive.... not sure you can make that readable on a Mac. Do you have a friend/neighbor with a Windows machine where you could get the DVD into a regular video format?

  • External DVD burner/iDVD and iMovie

Would iDVD work with this external dvd burner?

That would depend on the brand of dvd drive they are using inside there enclosure.
In my experience Pioneer drives always work well.
One would ask why you want to get a small external drive. full size tray loading drives are faster more robust and are much more efficient.
It doesn't have to be a small drive. I picked that particular drive because it was the only drive I could find with Apple listed under supported OS.
I put together my own external drive. I used a pioneer 112D 18x DVD-RW cost £16. I got an icybox dvd enclosure for £20. This enclosure has usb2 and firewire.
It is recognised in the apple system profiler as 'apple shipped'. And works with idvd and itunes and diskburning.
It looks like that copy is only in the UK. Perhaps there is a US version?
Or maybe I just need to find one that is USB supported and it will work on my Macbook? I have a feeling some will work. I just wont be able to use the software for them.

  • Important for users of JVC HDD Camcorder and iMovie HD

I've been having problems using iMovie HD to open my JVC HDD camcorder's videos. Some of you have been very kind in pointing me in a few directions. I thought I'd try and return the favor:
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip and the MPEG-2 Playback Component (both of which can be found easily using google), and used Streamclip to export my video files as .dv files - now I'm using iMovie to attend to my videos with no problems (knock on wood). Thanks everyone for your help! Any questions, just ask!

'cause, for sure the JVC HDDcorders record in mpeg2..
in the beginning, mp2 was meant for disk delievry only, but the HDDcorder manufacturers found it as their codec, to compress the hugh sized streams on that 'tiny' harddrives, 'cause there're chips avail, which do the en- and decoding in realtime..

  • IPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie don't work with Leopard

Hi, I just installed Leopard onto my machine and iPhoto, iDVD and iMovie no longer work properly. For all three I get the error message "(This program) has unexpectedly quit." Can you help?

my husband was having the same problem and it even bled into his sys prefs. the problems actually started after he ran software update last night (things were working find before that, and he's running leopard btw)
he archived and reinstalled (he unchecked the "preserve users and settings box") and we're about to find out if that solved it.
to summarize, you may need to reinstall if software update doesn't fix it. not sure what caused this problem. perhaps some corruption of files?

  • First FullHD consumer Harddrive camcorder works with iM...

the German Video-Magazin "videoaktiv" claims on its website, http://www.videoaktiv.de/content/view/871/2/, that the new JVC GZ-HD7, a full HiDef = 1920 x 1080i harddrive camcorder, uses a "MPEG-2-TS" codec, no advhd as Sony...
    furthermore, videoaktiv writes, quote:
.. : JVC partnered with Apple, iM and FCP will work with that codec, due to a plug-in ...
the camera (price >1700, <2000€) offers superb pic quality, allthough the 3 CCDs have only 1/5" size ...
... harddrive camcorder works with iMovie... thru a plug-in..
............. interesting.. for some of us...
    and, dear admins: no rumor..

.. Planning to buy that one ?..
I'm happy to pay my flat's rent..
no, still my goo' ol ' Sony TRV14 in use..
hiDef TV is still far, far away future in my household ...

thanks for mentioning Mikael .. I'll keep an eye on his posts... I just dare to take short visits in the FCE forum, pro.. whhoo ...- The Big Boys...
but the interesting part for me in this news is the codec, harddrive support and mentioning plug-ins doing so...

  • Conversion App for mpg to avi (so it will work with iDVD' 08)

I need an app to convert my camera mpg movie clips to avi.
So it will work with iDVD 08.
    Not Quicktime Pro
( Can't upgrade without losing the pro features, so looking for an alternative )
Does any one know of an free app?
    Thanks

You might as well try MPEG Steamclip as it is free and often recommended here. Their manual says "Exporter features: from MOV, DV, AVI, DIVX, MP4, WMV, FLV, MPEG, MPG, VOB, (. . .and a number of others) to MOV, DV, AVI, DIVX, MP4"
I can't speak from personal experience as to whether it will work for your situation.
You should also read Jon Walker's posts from the thread titled "Importing" in the iMovie forum.

  • HT2476 new Mac mini, outdated iDVD and iMovie HD with OSX 10.8.2; fix ?

    I have a brand new Mac mini and during set up I imported settings from a Macbook running 10.5.8; now the iDVD and iMovie HD apps are outdated and the settings do not allow updates to the current version compatible with OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2;
    How do I fix this?

In my case, the .dmg can only be installed if iLife 08 is installed, so I install iLife 08 (nothing works from that in ML, but it doesn't matter), then install the 6.04 .dmg, and then update the entire iLife with 09 and then 11, running software update in between. At that point, every app works. During that process, the new iMovie versions will be installed and automatically create a previous version folder for 6.04.
    Right now I have a Powerbook G4.
I'll be purchasing a new iMac (Mountain Lion) in the coming months.  I would like to put both iMovie HD6 and the last version of iDVD on it.  I've read numerous threads on the iDVD installation.  I'm trying to make sure I understand all the steps to getting both applications installed and working correctly.
I have the install disks for
iLife 08 (says it can install on both PPC and Intel Macs)
    iLife 09  (with iDVD)
iLife 11  (older version with iDVD)
I certainly remember disliking iMovie 7 and therefore used the download from Apple to revert back to 6.0.4 on my Powerbook.  I did a search and happened to find in my Library an installer package labeled iMovie HD6 (the file info says version 6.0.4 and it's dated Feb 2008). Is this what I would have used to go back to iMovie HD6 from iMovie 7?  I also found a ton of other installer packages that I had no idea my powerbook must have automatically saved.  Included were numerous iDVD 7 update installers.
So would I take these steps on the new iMac with Mountain Lion?
Use the iLife 08 disk to do a custom install of only iMovie (or does the 6.0.4 installer only work if you've installed the entire iLife 08?)
Run the installer package iMovieHD6  to revert from iMovie 7 to HD6
Use the iLife 09 disk to do a custom install of iDVD
Update iDVD by running the update packages and then using the iLife 11 disk to ensure I get all the themes available for iDVD
Run software update to bring everything up-to-date
I happened to do an install of only iDVD from iLife 11 (iDVD) on another IMac running Mountain Lion and found that I had no choice but to install iPhoto along with it.  Since that was an older version I then had to do a reinstall of the current iPhoto from the App store.
    Do these steps sound logical?

  • Does FCE HD 3.5 work with iDVD 06 which is in iLIFE 06?

I recently purchased FCE HD 3.5. My Mac is a PowerPC G4 which is a few years old. I need to purchase a new version of ilife because I just upgraded to Leopard 10.5 and need a version of ilife that works with leopard.I've been told that ilife 08 is too advanced for me computer and thus I will be purchasing ilife 06. My question is: Does Final Cut Express HD 3.5 work with iDVD in ilife 06? If anyone can answer this question, I would greatly appreciate it :O)
    Thanks!!

    Yes, it does.

  • FaceTime no longer working with Yosemite and IOS 8.1

I have used FaceTime flawlessly for some time with no issue.
After I upgraded to Yosemite on my MacBookAir and IOS8.1 on 5S and iPad air, I've had a problem connecting.
When I get a call, all the devices ring (as they should) but it will not connect on the first device I pick up on.  It says connecting
but all the other devices keep ringing and finally it says I have a missed call.  The connection does not happen.  If I turn off
all devices except one, it will work...... do we have a bug here??

Thank you for responding to my issue.  I spent the better part of two hours trying to get this to work.  Bluetooth is enabled on all devices. Each computer is set in Preferences/General to allow Handoff.  All computers and iPhones are on the same WiFi network.  I toggled all of the major settings off and on.  Rebooted each of my computers several times. I finally conceded defeat.  Then my daughter asked to have a try at it.  She worked on the first MBP for about thirty minutes and informed me that she had gotten continuity to work.  And indeed, on her MBP late 2012 she is able to use the continuity features in both directions between her computer and her iPhone 6.  But it only works with Mail and Safari.  I asked how she accomplished this feat.  She said she turned off "everything" on her computer and iPhone (WiFi, Bluetooth, "Allow handoff" under Preferences/General) and then rebooted both the iPhone and the computer.  She then turned everything back on.  This worked for her.  So we tried the same thing on my MBP and iPhone 6.  Now continuity works partially. Email activity is mirrored on both the MBP and the iPhone regardless of which device initiates the continuity activity.  But Safari activity on the computer is mirrored on the iPhone but not in the opposite direction.  There is no continuity function for Pages in either direction.  The telephone connectivity works fine on all of my devices– 3 MBPs, Mac Pro, iPad Air, 2nd gen iPad and 3rd gen iPad.

Looking for an app that works with Mac and iPhone that will set calendar reminders of birthdays in contacts.

    Hi ron1098,
Try my application Dates to iCal. it runs on the Mac, but you can sync the calendar to your iOS device.
See more about Dates to iCal here. It is £4 shareware with a 2 week demo.
    Best wishes

  • Handoff not working with Yosemite and iOS 8

I have three Macbook Pros in my household.  Two are mid 2012 models and the other a late 2012 model.  Each is supposed to support the handoff feature of Yosemite and ios8.  Everything seems to work properly between my daughter's late 2012 MBP and her iPhone 6.  But on the other two MBPs in our family the continuity feature does not work on either of them.  Receiving and sending calls works fine.  But the continuity does not work even though all three MBPs and all three iPhone 6 are on the same wifi network.
I've tried all the suggestions that I could find.  Toggling off and on the various settings on the MBPs and the iPhones.

    1. Will Time Capsule work with this and how?
    2. Can my printer USB be plugged in and then shared between the devices?
    3. Can I create a network and how?
    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

Yes you can. In iPhoto create a Album with the photos you want in it. You can drag them from your Events folder. In iTunes with your iPad connected go to Photos by cliking on your iPad. You can then select the album or events you want.
