The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models may cause this issue. If applicable, test by disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

How can I fix kernel task from using 300% of my CPU?
Everytime I disconnect my MacBook Pro from the wall, Kernel Task uses 300% or more of my CPU and stays that way until I connect the power. I've tryed resetting the System Management Controller, restarting the computer, logging in to another account, and deleted all "bad" files (problem files I've found out via Google). Going to Safe Mode does remove this problem, so it's maybe a program error?
The most likely reason for it is that the battery needs to be replaced.

Kernel task is using many resources on my mac
Hi
I was working on my Mac but is coming very slow sometimes so I found the problem is the kernel task.
Lex I already use the Clean My Mac and since the first time I delete a lot of things I don't even remember how many. Should I format my drive?
About the iCleanMemory so the system will clear the RAM by it self or should I do something different or use another program?

There is no way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2, and the developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Mavericks read: OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks and follow the procedure under Time Machine or other disk migration.
Other problems may exist but those concerns will be rendered moot by erasing your system, which must be accomplished. -
Kernel task is using 2-4GB of RAM
I have a late 2012 iMac with 16GB of RAM. At any given time 2-4GB of RAM is in use by the kernel task. My system isn't trucking along for it, thankfully, but it still has me somewhat concerned. How can I identify what is responsible for this significant consumption of RAM and how can I reduce it?
Hello,
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

I'm experiencing issue with MacBook's performance. Kernel Task is using 612 MB of RAM.
Hi Apple Users,
I am new to this kind of forum/support thread. I am experiencing poor performance on my MacBook Pro. One thing I noticed is the kernel task is eating up too much ram. I have no idea how to fix this. Please share your expertise or past experiences in dealing with kind of problem. I would greatly appreciate for any inputs on this kind of issue.
I have some details that I think might help since I read several threads related to my issue.

Kernel task when using Firewire external usb drive
Hi, I'm using an external 320GB Iomega USB drive that has both usb and firewire cable sockets. When i connect the drive with the firewire cable to my mac (MacBook Pro) the CPU usage increases. Specifically, kernel_task usage goes up and stays constant in around 3% and sometimes it goes higher and stays high for longer periods.
Does anyone knows why this occurs and how to avoid a kernel_task CPU usage increase?
Greetings,
C.It's probably Spotlight Indexing the external drive, if you don't want this to happen open System Preferences/Spotlight, click the Privacy Tab then drag the external drive icon from your Desktop into that box.

Help! Kernel_task using high percentage of CPU.
Hi guys,
I am using Macbook Pro with Retna. Recently my macbook started to slow down while making loud fan noise. I noticed that Kernel Task was using high percentage of CPU (aroung 600). This is not the first time. Last time I took it to apple store and got fix, but this time I can not do that because my warrenty expired.
I tried to fix it by formating the macbook, but it did not work.
Could anyone help me with this?!?Do SMC reset. how u do it???????.... well connect the magsafe adapter to the mac, Shutdown the mac. Then Hold ctrl+opt+shift+power button for 6-8 sec. Leave all the keys and have a watch on the Magsafe, the amber should turn Green the moment u leave all the keys indicating a successfull Reset. Then unplug the magsafe wait fro 3 sec plug it again. Start the machine , still the issue is there then finally do a PRAM/NVRAM reset holding cmd+opt+p+r as u start the machine. Machine would chime Twicce on the 3rd chime leave all the keys. Even after this doesnot do good then battery reset is required for which u ll hav to take it to Apple service store.

I'm just wondering what's up with the RAM usage on my macbook. Right when I start up 500MB of RAM is being used (wired and active), 100MB of it being the kernel task. After a typical session of use, I close all programs and find that the RAM usage is about 800MB and the kernel task is using 250MB. Just wondering why the kernel task's RAM usage creeps up like that and doesn't go back down. It's just a little perplexing to have the same exact programs running and be down 300MB of free RAM.
I was having the same problem and looked into it, this may help:

Kernel Task is slowing down MacBook Pro
Hi All,
I've been having a lot of issues with a very slow running MBP and everything freezes up every few minutes. Right now I'm running Safari right now and the Kernel Task is using 516MB of Memory and my 4GB is almost entirely used. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (Please keep in mind I'm not very computer savvy so simple, quick tips would be best for me!)

File copy results in kernel task high CPU usage
Macbook Pro
MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
2010 year model.
Snow Leopard 10.6.7
Copying files over the network, or via external Firewire 800 harddrive invariably results in rather hight cpu utilization for kernel task process. The number are in the range of 15-20% in the Acivity Monitor. To compare, iMac 27", 2009, full speed FireWire bus file copy at 80 mb/sec makes only 2-3% kernel task CPU use. Why is Macbook pro so much worse? Is it due to chipset limitations, or what?Just now I have been copying some movie files over Gigabit local area network, the data received per second is up to 55 mb, and kernel task consumes 50% or more of CPU. The same task on iMac or on Windows based computer does not tax the CPU in any way, since it is handled properly by network adapter I suppose. So what is wrong with 2010 Macbook Pro?
-
Tasks using over 100% of CPU?
There are a few Root tasks that occasionally use more than 100% of my CPU according to my Activity Monitor. One of them was at 148% at one point.
There is usually just one Root task that uses that much CPU whenever I open my Macbook from sleep or it just happens at random times. And the only way to stop it is to force quit the task that is making it do that. It all started after I was ripping a DVD using iSkySoft and it froze so I had to force quit. Once it quit, the CPU problem came up.
Why does it do this? Do I just have to check the Activity Monitor every now and then to delete the Root tasks that use a lot of CPU? Is there a way to permanently make it stop?Well the root task problem stopped but now I just turned on the computer and Finder was using about 80% CPU for some reason but it seems to be working now after I quit it in Activity Monitor and brought it back up again.

Kernal Task Usage High - Disk Tab not CPU?
Greetings support community. My mac is running awfully slow. Often the fan gets loud - spinning beach balls - and apps stop responding all the time.
I'm look for some suggestion as I travel outside the US for work regularly and CANNOT risk loosing this MAC just yet. I have yet to attempt to reformat/repair but I know that is the next right step before I commit to buying a new device.
Below is a scan from EtreCheck. Can anyone help me decipher this?
I'm resisting panicing - I know this should be fixable I just need some guidance on where to start. Also see screen shot of activity monitor under disk tab - kernel tasks are using up 2 gbs! That has to be insanely wrong right?

Both were very clean. See below.
I'm not sure where to go from here. It was running pretty nicely in safe mode - I didn't try to open a photoshop though which will usually slow up my machine.
But I did open my firefox when I went back out of safe mode and my whole thing froze up immediately as the first operation and required a force quit. UGH
I closed it down - restarted - tried with safari - I can browse (weird though that my airport is dimmed out but I still have full connection to my wifi)
My kernal_task tho seems to be way more in check since I verified disk - but I'm getting some spinning beach balls still and firefox not responded.
I dont have a....

System/Library/StartupItems
nor do i have a STARTUPitems folder in my private/var/run
I do have....

com.adobefpsaud.plist I dont store my adobe files in the cloud - is that what this is trying to prompt? should i delete?
com.adobe.switchboard.plist ditto?

com.wdc.SmartwareDriveService.plist this is my backup - but I don't run that everyday.
com.wdc.wDSmartwareServiice.plist ditto
In my System/Library/LaunchDaemons i have MANY com.apple......prompts - I'm assuming these are not meant to be deleted?
But outside of that there are a few extras (listed below) - should I delete these?

Kernel Task over 400% CPU usage
Hello, I have some questions about the Kernel Task in my activity monitor.
Recently, after a hard disk failure, I have my Macbook Pro wiped and start afresh with Mavericks. All was well, but it slowed down tremendously in the last couple of days. I checked the activity monitor and Kernel Task is always around 400-470%, sometimes it even peaked to 1000+%! I closed all my applications but it is still taking up all my RAM. I cannot work when it is freezing up every 2 seconds. What is the problem?
Here is the report, if it helps:

Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
☞ high ambient temperature
☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component

Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display. -
Kernel task uses 750MBs of RAM since installing Mavericks
Hi All,
I'm new to these forums and could really use some help. After installing Mavericks I noticed my system was running deathly slow even with no applications open. At first I assumed it was indexing so I waited a day. I noticed kernel task, the finder, and icon services agent were using unusual amounts of RAM. Kernel task would go up to 750MBs - it never went that high before. The finder would go up to 300MBs and stay there, even after closing every window. Only quitting and restarting Finder would solve that issue.
I've tried repairing disk permissions. I also tried getting rid of Parallels, since MS finally released OneNote for Mac. This made no difference. I deleted lots of widgets and unecessary applications and possible bloatware (like TechTools Pro). I installed AppCleaner to make sure I got everything. It got most, but definitely not all associated files. I then went into the terminal and did the command that reveals hidden files/folders. I then deleted the daemon for techtools pro just in case.
After all of this, kernel tasks is still using 750MBs and 7.9GBs of RAM is being taken up (other than background processes all I have fired up are Firefox and Skype. I'm at my wits end and would be so grateful for some help.

hi
I recently upgraded my i-mac from 1 GB to 2 Gb which as speeded up the computer hugely. However, I have noticed that Word and Powerpoint use up a massive amount of ram (they are the old power pc version and I suspect rosetta or similar is in operation). That I understand but there is also a process name called "kernel task" which also eats up a huge amount of ram (131 MB real memory). My old G4 flat screen mac does not have this process name at all and incidentally runs almost as quickly with a slower processor and 756MB of ram (yes it does have leopard). What is this kernel task process about? Is there a way of getting around it? Any tips to speed up the computer further without buying more ram? The computer now seems to require more than 2 GB if left on all day.
Any advice appreciated.A kernel task is in integral part of your computer's OS, it does things like schedule processes and runs all the time. Yours doesn't seem to be out of line in its usage of memory.
Try emptying your caches and make sure that you allow the cron tasks to run daily. Restarting your browser often will help keep things lively. If you have a PPC iMac, your versions of Word and Powerpoint are native to your computer and should run speedily. If they are used on an intel machine, they will run more slowly.
Try to remember to close memory intensive applications so that you don't have too many running at once.
