My Keyboard and the Delete/Backspace Key

So last night I was looking through my system settings and making small tweaks here and there where I wanted them. It was a nice little experience. However, I somehow disabled my delete(backspace) key completely. Also other keys like my shift key are suddenly sticking. I have gone back in and tried to restore everything back to factory settings on my keyboard and still nothing. Am I missing something or is there somewhere else I should be looking to fix this besides going into System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>???? I am so confused I do not know what I did.

Yes. "Shift key sticking" sounds like 'Sticky Keys' - check in System Preferences > Universal Access > Keyboard.

  • The Delete/Backspace key

The following occurs frequently, is immensely detractful from user experience, and has persisted through all updates starting from the original iPhone.
When using the delete/backspace key, I often hold it down for no more than 2-3 seconds. This is to delete usually only one word. What happens is the delete key becomes stuck, and deletes an entire sentence or paragraph. I am helpless to stop it. Several rapid taps can also trigger th.....there it went.

i think i may have experienced this before...def. not frequently.
what i think is happening is when you go to delete, there may be some sort of delay or lag. and so you're tapping delete. it doesnt seem to be deleting so you tape a bunch of times. the phone actually registers all those taps and deletes as many characters as taps, or similarly, continues to delete for the duration of how long you've held the delete button.
unfortunately my only advice at this moment is to delete slowly...and patiently.

    Hey skyshade13,
Thanks for the question. The following article outlines how to restore a previous iTunes library should there be no content after updating. While the article does not speak specifically to your symptoms, attempting the steps by utilizing the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder may resolve your issue.

Exposé just stopped working, both the key on the keyboard and the multitouch gesture gets no response. Does anyone have any idea why, or how to solve it?

I found a way to fix it. Simply restart the dock by using "killall Dock" in the terminal.
    Cheers!

  • My cat jumped up on the keyboard and the screen rotated, how do I correct this?

My cat jumped up on my keyboard and the screen rotated. I've searched but I can't find out to undo this so the screen is in the normal position again.

    Hi dscamp,
I don't think this is a Firefox issue, but the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+[Arrow Key]. Ctrl+Alt+Up should put your monitor back in the proper orientation.
    Hopefully this helps!

Hi, I'm Michael. I accidentally touched something on my keyboard and the browser column disappeared. what do I do to restore it on Safari page please?

The space to write in the http/www..... just disappeared.
    Ok...  try this.
From your Safari menu bar (top of your screen) click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab.
Turn that off, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, click View from your Safari menu bar then click Show Toolbar
You may have hit Option + Command + T on your keyboard by accident.

  • Keyboard wonky.... delete/backspace key not working

I have the flat Ali keyboard. Got it about a month ago. It was working OK until yesterday. Went to System Preferences and set the F9 key to show "All windows". After doing this, the Delete key began working in forward-space manner instead of backspace.
The ARROW keys no longer work. Left arrow goes all the way to the top of the page, rather than one space back. Other three arrows do nothing.
Went back to System Preferences. Selected reset defaults. Did not fix the problem.
    What do I try next?

Eventually found the answer myself. I deselected the button for "Use F1 and F2 keys as standard....."
It has been a good reminder to only change one thing at a time when "messing" with the System Preferences panel.

  • My BT keyboard delete button now forward deletes rather than backspacing like it used to do. This happened after I got my iMac back from the hard drive replacement program. Any ideas how to return the keyboard to the default backspace?

The good news after my hard drive was replaced during Apple's Seagate replacement program -- all my data and settings reinstalled seamlessly through Time Machine and my external hard drive. Bad news? My BT keyboard will now only forward delete when I hit the delete key rather than backward delete. I find this so ironic since I hated this feature when I switched from PC to Mac, but now I'm totally used to it. I tried resetting the default under system preferences, but it didn't help. Otherwise, keyboard works perfectly. This is so strange. Anyone have any suggestions? Oh -- and now I see my arrows don't work either.

  • I suddenly have two flashing lights on my keyboard by the caps lock key and over the end/pg up key.

I encountered a problem waking my laptop (Pavilion dv7-1270us) this morning.  At first it would not wake up and had to do a hard reboot.  Now I have two flashing lights on the keyboard -the caps lock light and the one over the end/pg up keys over the number pad.  I have run several diagnostics and cannot find an answer as to what this is.

  • A Plea to Right the DELETE ALL Key

This key, which can be found on the stock Apple keyboard when in landscape mode, has resulted in the loss of entire thoughtfully written paragraphs using Pages on more than four occasions. Its placement above the comma key is quite precarious. I'd like to see it omitted come iOS 9, or at least a means of redoing what was accidentally undone added in Pages.
I understand this is in reality a silent plea, but I have grown to loathe this key and had to say something somewhere.
p.s. It would also be nice to see the stock keyboard be given the ability to split using the iPhone just as I hear it can split on the iPad. But if I had to choose between this desire and the one expressed above, the correction of the mistake made by someone to add a button that deletes everything done since you either last hit Enter or Backspace right above the comma button would be my choice.

  • How do I find out and the delete "other" files being stored on my drive?

My Mac Air HD says it has 17 GB left of free memory space.
    76 GB says of "Other"
How do I find out what "other" is, and delete it to free space.
This is a brand new, Mac. I just got it in December and I have no pictures saved in it.
    Thank you

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper 2>&-
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • I have a Mac Book Pro with the Sub Keyboard and the sub keyboard has kicked in

The numbers under the letters are active and I can not type using  these key letters which makes a wireless keyboard the only way to have this in a normal way. .
The keyboard works right on the Mac side but the problem exists with the Windows bootcamp. How can I turn off the sub keyboard part and have a normal keyboard?

    ajfcrf,
I’m afraid that I don’t understand what you’re asking. What is a “sub keyboard”, and which numbers under which letters do you mean?
