My Keyboard and trackpad aren't working.

I recently restarted my MacBook and when it restarted and booted up the keyboard and trackpad won't work. I have restarted my computer since then and nothing. I took out the battery and unplugged it and rebooted it and still it won't work. The only button that works is the power button. I tried to put in my install discs and I can't choose to restore because the trackpad won't work...

I am currently having this same issue. What can I do to fix this??? Brand new macbook unibody.

I'm using MBP 15" late 2008 with Maverick OS. A couple of days ago, the internal keyboard and trackpad are not working at all. I did all the troubleshooting. I even reformat it; installing the snow leopard and re-installing the maverick but no good result. I believe there's no problem with my keyboard because i can still do PRAM on my lappy. Everytime i'm booting up my MBP, it always looking for bluetooth trackpad and keyboard. I have not used those bluetooth peripherals from day 1 i've started using MBP. I just read on the internet about the same problem has happened on MBP 13" retina and APPLE fixed it by updating the software. I wish Apple will also do something for the old MBP to fix the intermal keyboard and trackpad problem.

  • Keyboard and trackpad does not work.

    Hey guys~
I have the late 2009 Unibody Macbook Pro and just yesterday both my keyboard and trackpad have stopped working. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and know of a solution. I made upgrades to the macbook (added more memory and a better HD) but that was back 9 months ago. Ive tried reseting the PRAM but I can't because the keyboard just doesnt work at all. I had to run out and buy a temporary external keyboard to plug into the USB. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I forgot to mention that my power button did work but everything else, keyboard and trackpad, didn't! Anyway, I shutdown my laptop, slept, and turned it back (in hopes that it might work instead of restarting it like before). Now my keyboard and trackpad works! Thank goodness! I was about to go to the Apple store upset too!

They keyboard lights up when it is booting up but when i try to sign in, nothing types or the mouse wont work. i am fine if the mouse doesnt work because i can use an external one but can someone please help me?!

  • Keyboard and trackpad have stopped working

    Hi there
My girlfriend and I have 3 yr old MBP's and her keyboard and trackpad have stopped working. She can plug in an external USB mouse and it moves around, but she can't type her password into the log in. hence she's stuck.
We have tried powering down and up 3 times, even taken out the battery.
    Can anyone suggest help?
    Thanks Rob

She needs a new top case. On older systems, the keyboard, trackpad, and even power button are all controlled via a single cable. Odds are, if you wait long enough, the power button will stop working too.
I'd estimate the repair cost at probably around $250-$300, so she might just want to be looking for a new laptop. You can also hit ebay and craigslist to see what you can find, just be careful with the screws for the top case. You get the wrong screw in a couple of the holes, they will never come back out until you break something.

  • Macbook Pro's keyboard and trackpad aren't functioning well, please help, thank you!

Dear Apple Support and Apple Communities,
hopefully this question will be easily understood and will be answered with answers that can help, useful and beneficial. I will explain the problem, story that I guess began the problem, specs and information of the Notebook and so on.
I love products produced by the brand, Apple, but they can get broken, ruined or destroyed. So, I do try my best to take care of devices that I have well. Although, my father bought a Macbook Pro last year, around November or December, 2013(I THINK). I don't think it's very old, maybe 3 - 5 months, but it should be in a good condition. I have dropped it many times, hopefully that won't effect the problem. Now, the problem, the Notebook is a beautiful device that I would love to keep using, but I don't really know how to use it properly and in the CORRECT/RIGHT/GOOD/SAFE way. If possible, can you list methods/ways to do those things? If so, thank you! Anyway, back to the topic, the Notebook's keyboard has a problem, some keys aren't responding, especially the alphabets/letters, I guess some other keys worked because I did the PRAM RESET. Anyway, the trackpad is also not functioning well, sometimes, when I right click the trackpad or when I click the entire surface with one finger(RIGHT CLICK OR SOMETHING ELSE), it would left click, I found a way to fix is, put the Notebook to sleep by closing the cover, hopefully that's alright. Anyway, it all began, I guess, when I was brushing my teeth. I dislike to waste time, so I used the Notebook and brushed my teeth simultaneously. I guess Saliva was being produced because of the acidic substance(TOOTHPASTE)? Anyway, my mouth had a lot of liquid in it, could have been Saliva, water and toothpaste. So, Physics, natural forces, Gravitational force occurred, some of the liquid left my mouth and onto the keyboard. I didn't panic because I think I heard that keyboard could not or did not suck in a lot of liquid, but I did clean it up. Anyway, the Notebook including the keyboard and trackpad were functioning like normal. I guess after three hours, something happened to the Notebook. I think I was using Safari in FULLSCREEN MODE and suddenly an application or software for another application appeared. It was requesting permission for an update, I think. I updated it and suddenly, the Notebook went haywire. Probably not immediately, but I guess the Notebook did go haywire. I tried searching for ways to fix it, but not much could fix or solve the problem. Hopefully your answer-s will fix or solve the problem, thank you.

    INFORMATION
The Notebook has a few dents, I guess. I tried to open the keys to check for toothpaste or liquids. My brother told me that toothpaste is dense, probably the answer? My other brother told me that the keyboard and/or trackpad are/is "shocked"(LIQUID AND ELECTRICITY, NOT SUCH GOOD COMBINATIONS). Hopefully this is enough to be counted as detailed and informative. Thank you for your time! Take care!

Take it to an Apple Store for diagnosis and repair. This will not be free, dropping the Mac and dropping liquids on it are not covered by the warranty.

  • After update, keyboard and trackpad does not work on MBA but wireless mouse works. I don't use a wireless keyboard. Stuck at login because need to enter pw. Anyone have this issue? Please help!

My Macbook Air (13", mid 2011) right after I did the Maverick OS update. My keyboard on Macbook Air is not working and it says "There isn't a keyboard connected" (Bluetooth Keyboard Setup). I do not use a wireless keyboard. Apparently my bluetooth works because my wireless mouse works. I am currently stuck at my login screen not being able to get in because I can't even enter my password. I am, however, able to login as guests and get to the Keyboard viewer to type things with my wireless mouse. I really need my keyboard to work to use for my job. I need help please!

  • Macbook 3,1. Clean install of Lion. Two days later my keyboard and trackpad aren't responding.

Left my computer for a couple minutes. Came back. Tried to move my mouse. Wouldn't move. Tried to Command-Tab to a different program. Keyboard wouldn't type. Plugged in my USB mouse and restarted. Got to the login screen and couldn't type in my password because the keyboard, along with the trackpad, still wasn't working. Tried powering down and removing the battery. Nothing.
So I scheduled a Genius Bar appointment. But is anyone else having similar issues with Lion upgrades killing their keyboard and trackpad?

So it happens constantly, but shutting down my machine, unplugging the power cable, removing the battery, and hitting the power button/holding it down to reset the SMC works every time. Anyone know what this means?

  • My Macbook pro keyboard and trackpad do not work

There is no water damage. So please, do not say this may be the problem. My mac is only around 2 months old. I was using my keyboard and trackpad fine, when i looked away, and when i looked back nothing worked at all. No keys, nor the trackpad work. Please if someone knows a known issue, please bring it to my attention. Thanks!

  • Keyboard and Trackpad just stopped working completely

Hi, I'm on a MBP 2.4 GHz running 10.4.11. Beginning yesterday my keyboard and mouse completely stopped working. This happened twice. The first time I got them working again with a hard shut down, the second time I got them working by closing the screen, putting the computer in standby. When I opened the thing back up, everythign was working.
Today, though, when the keyboard and trackpad quit, I've been unable to get them working again.
My problem is similar to the ones experienced here by MBP 2.4 and MB Air owners:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7194888
With the difference being that I'm on Tiger, not Leopard and I can't get the key or pad to respond at all. The solutions offered at that thread don't work for me.
I've plugged in an external keyboard and mouse and those work fine.
Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Related to the keyboard and mouse or trackpad not working, I've found of late that the whole lot freeze up and that wretched spinning timer takes over ad infinitum. Only way out is to hold pwr button the customary 6-8 seconds, then re-start with pwr/option.
Problem could be related to (Apple) upgrades as it's after a new one that this problem creeps in.
Makes me want to either revert to Factory settings or, Heaven forbid, give this MacBook Pro the float test and go back to Microsoft or even dig out the old steam typewriter.
The latter may be the best option - my life has definitely NOT improved since I invested in this heap of junk and the almost daily offerings of wonderful software by Apple are now set up for Spam, they're such a waste of time...
    So, that's my Sunday moan.
If I leave this thing alone while I make a cup of tea I'll find it frozen again by the time I come back - any help on this from anyone??? (Steam being a bit pricey these days)

  • My keyboard and trackpad mysteriously stopped working in Windows 7 Professional.

This has happened many times, and every time I have to resort to re-installing windows; I want to avoid this hassle.  This usually occurs after an update or forced reboot.

  • Keyboard and trackpad doesn't work - in a weird way!

All of a sudden, while browsing, my trackpad started to act as if I was right-clicking. And when two-finger scrolling it zooms.
When using the keyboard I get error sound and otherwise no reponse.
I have tried to plug in an external mouse, and it behaves exactly the same way as the trackpad, including the zooming instead of scrolling.
I haven t tried ext keyboard yet.
I have restarted several times. Cannot get into the machine since I cannot enter the code because of the keyboard error. Although At one point that part suddently worked, and I was in. But the problems are still the same. Right now I am back to not being able to enter my entry code.
Very strange I think. Anyone experienced this?

Make sure your trackpad is clean and no keys are sticking. Restart doing a
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Keyboard and Trackpad Aren't Recognized in new MBP

I purchased a brand new MBP 15" 2.4 GHZ 2 GB RAM yesterday. I charged it and then turned it on. The computer does not recognize the trackpad or the keyboard. I've also looked at any patches/updates that are on the Apple support site, but when I went to install the only two that seemed relevant (12/07 & 2/08), the MBP message came up that I don't need these updates. I've also re-installed the factory settings and original software and tried to install patches again. Since the store is closed today for Easter Sunday, I thought I would see if there was a recommended fix from the group. Otherwise, as Graham thoughtfully suggested, I will take the machine back to the store tomorrow.
Apologies for not posting this question as a new thread earlier, I am new to this. Thank you Graham for the advice.

I brought the MBP back to the Apple store this morning. Within 20 minutes, I had a new one. They said it was most likely a hardware issue with the wiring. I'm happily typing this on the keyboard of my new MBP. Thank you to those that gave insightful advice over the weekend.

  • Macbook pro Late 2011 13.3 inch i7 keyboard and trackpad not working bluetooth showing a cross sign and no usb mouse is detected. Almost dead keyboard and mouse. Earlier same problem used to be solved by opening the lower cover and closing it.

My macbook pro 13.3 inch i7 late 2011 edition has previously encountered unresponsive trackpad and keyboard. To solve that, I used to open the back cover and then close it. It has been working fine since that. Yesterday, same thing happened, this time I noticed that bluetooth icon is showing a cross sign across it and keyboard and trackpad were unesponsive. After some time , everything worked fine and bluetooth sign was back to normal. Then , suddenly it went back to the problem. I shut it down by holding the power button. When I booted it again, I could not login because keyboard and trackpad were not working. I attached a HP mouse it didnt work. I opened the back cover disconnected the battery and then connected it again, didnt worked. Since then , I have tried many things and nothing has solved the problem.

    @sanjampet
As you suggested I reset the smc, in the first boot nothing worked. In the second boot, it all worked like a charm. I thought that my problem is resolved now. To test it, I shut it down properly. Next morning, I powered it on, all things i.e, keyboard, trackpad, bluetooth etc. worked and I thought that problem has been solved. When I was just going to visit apple forum to reply you,  the same problem reappeared. A sawtooth cross over bluetooth icon, keyboard not working, trackpad not working,no usb mouse working which worked well when it was fine. I reset smc so many times again and again but same problem continued. Isn't it a problem of the firmware?
Next time when it will work, I will update its firmware.
My macbook was bought in dec2011 so no warranty now.

  • Keyboard and trackpad freeze, but leopard still working

Hi, from 2-3 weeks my keyboard and trackpad doesn't work. Sometimes on start up, sometimes after using mac for 1-2 hours. But if i connect a usb mouse, leopard working!!! Everytime i need to restart the computer or close the lid for 1-2 minutes, but this method not always it works. In the last 6 month I have carried my macbook pro four times to assistance to change 3 airport cards and 1 logic board!!! And now another problem! About one months ago I have changed ram (from 2gb to 4gb(TakeMS)), it is possible is there the problem? Help me, i'm tired to go ahead and behind to assistance!!!
Excuse me for the english, but i'm italian! Marco

    @ pequet
I've re-inserted previous ram and macbook work fine. After, i've re-inserted new ram and check it with rember (a memory test tool). Test-result: new ram work fine! And also the macbook work without problems!! (for the moment....)
Pequet try this procedure and after make to know me if it works.
For memtool this is the link for downloading
    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember
This tool is easy to use, but it can put much time to us to end if you check all memory avaiable. I've checked 3500Mb in about 2 hours without any app open.
