If you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare, call them.  Let them deal w/it.
Out of warranty, take your MBP to your local AS or an AASP.  Diagnostic testing is FREE!
Something else to try:  Update your OS to last version of Lion.  Use Software Update or the Lion combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • I updated, but now my keyboard backlight will not work. Any suggestions?

I recently updated my MacBook Pro to OSX 10.8.4, but now my keyboard backlight does not work and there is nothing I can find in the Keyboard section of preferences to turn it back on. Anyone else had this problem?

One of these steps should help.
    1. Restart.
    2. Press F6 key couple of times.
    3. System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard
Uncheck the box next to "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light"
    4. Reset SMC

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2010 13", Lion 10.7.2, keyboard backlight / ALS not working

Since upgrading to Mac OS X Lion I have had problems with keyboard backlight and the ambient light sensor. I realized that the problem seems to be caused by ambient light sensor or hardware detection issues. LCD is not auto-dimming with light intensity variation. Since then I've done a Snow Leopard clean install and upgraded to Lion with no success. Then I have done clean installs of Lion using USB Keys with versions 10.7.0, 10.7.1 and 10.7.2 and the problem persists. Under Snow Leopard everything works like a charm.
SMC and PRAM reset did not solve the problem.
When I press F5 and F6 to adjust the backlight nothing comes up on the screen.
    No settings under Keyboard menu.
Any ideas on how to solve this?

    Max,
I have the same model MacBook Pro as you. Have you tried erasing your internal disk, reïnstalling Snow Leopard from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD, and running Software Update to get it  to 10.6.8, to see if it also misbehaves under Snow Leopard?

  • My keyboard backlight won't work

I tried to dim my keyboard backlight and the dialog came up but there is a circle with a slash through it like it is unavailable, not allowing me to dim or brighten my keyboard. Then the lights dimmed and I cannot bring them back up?  Whats up with this?

If you are in a well lit area this will pop up on the screen.

  • Keyboard Backlight Suddenly Not Working

I was using the computer, browsing steam, bought a couple games, nothing special. I turn for a moment to put my wallet on my shelf, I turn back to notice my suddenly lackluster, dark keyboard. What the hell happened? I tried tapping the soft key to switch backlight modes, it successfully switched to the solid white mode, but the next was simply white on the left side, then it returned to darkness. So I'm assuming the coloured backlights may have an issue. Also, since when were there only 3 modes? I'm pretty sure there should be like 5. I was going to see if I could get it working again with the SteelSeries Engine app which I almost never touch, I get a message saying that the file which the shortcut leads to no longer exists. HAPPENED TO THAT!!?? I tried restarting my laptop to no avail. First a restart, then a shut down, nothing changed. So now I'm sitting here with a dark keyboard and apparently no SteelSeries Engine. I'm completely lost as to where the hell that app went. This is my personal laptop, nobody else goes on it.
    Please help.

When I get to the Support & Service Location page, I can't find Utility.
    I have a GT70 2PC Dominator with GTX 870m.
I found everything, I downloaded it. I checked the control panel to see if the old Steelseries engine was still listed, it is. The files are still in program files as well, it's really only the .exe that is missing as far as I know. So I'm not sure how to proceed from here? Should I uninstall it, delete the old file and reinstall with the new one? Or should I recover the .exe somehow?

  • Keyboard backlight doesn't work in Windows

I used Boot Camp to install Windows 7. The install went fine, and the drivers seemed to install without any problems. I noticed, however, that my backlight does not function. All of the function media keys work (brightness and such), and when I press the backlight buttons, I can see the pop up acknowledging the change in back light, but the light never actually turns on. Is there a way to fix this without me reformatting the partition I just installed and updated?

When you say "null on the light bar" do you mean that there is an on-screen indicator that appears when you press the brightness keys, but it doesn't change?
Which Mac are you using? I have a 13" MacBook Pro (2010) and those keys seem to work fine for me. But I just installed Boot Camp, so I might be using newer drivers than you are.
Are you using Boot Camp 4? This just came out with Lion. It allows for automatic updates to the Windows drivers and support software. If you installed Boot Camp before you upgraded to Lion, then you might need to upgrade your Windows drivers to Boot Camp 4. If none of this applies to you, then I'm not sure what to do about it, other than talk to an Apple service rep.

  • Keyboard backlight doesn't work

Before I take this back to the Apple Store to be diagnosed, thought I'd try here. I have a three week old Macbook Pro 13" (Early 2011) with the 2.3 GHz i5 running OS X 10.6.7 with the MBP update. I upgraded the RAM and hard drive over the weekend to 8GB and 750GB, respectively. In the process of this change, the backlight on my keyboard stopped functioning in all lighting situations. I've tried the SMC and PRAM resets multiple times. I've repaired permissions. I'm running out of things I can find to do to fix the issue. Does anyone have any thoughts on something that I may have missed?
    Thanks for all help.
    Regards,
    T.J.

i'm not sure if it is a hardware problem it might show up in apple hardware test

  • HT3986 My keyboard backlight doesn't work on windows 7 Ultimate but it does on mac OS X Lion version 10.7.3. When I press the keys on keyboard to change the backlight, it just shows me a null on the light bar and doesn't let me turn on the brightness.

Are there any updates that I need for the boot camp or do I have to go to some settings.

  • Screen backlight and keyboard backlight not working

Yesterday I turned on my old but proud PowerBook17" and the *screen was black*, but you could barely see everything. *Also keyboard backlight is not working.*
I read many many forums and all say that black screen caused by inverter failure, but in my case keyboard lighting is also dead, so I wonder *if this is something different* and not the inverter.
I would appreciate any advises or ideas cause I love this machine..
    Thank you in advance!

Same problem here.  I initially thought the auto-brightness problem had been fixed in 10.7.3, but sadly it hasn't. The auto-brightness works when the Mac starts, but I find it loses control and fails after wake from sleep.
I have telephoned AppleCare several times but they are not aware of this bug.  They think a PRAM reset cures it, but it doesn't.  As soon as the machine goes to sleep then auto-brightness fails on wake.
I have used the Apple Form to report the bug.  It might eventually get fixed if others would kindly report it as well please.  Here is the link:

  • T430 - Keyboard backlight not working

    Hi.
My keyBoard backlight is not working. So may i know how to resolve this issue and i am not sure also if this feature is available in my laptop.
    Regards

    Hi,
I have excatly the same problem, I have bought a laptop including an US backlit keyboard and all first three options of pressing FN+space noting happens and then the Thinglight is ok.
I can see very low light under the keys but it does not light the keys  and it is useless.
Is it a definetely a hardware problem, when I removed the battter to try to reboot it and I can see through the cover cage that eveything under is well stacked even over stacked and like a bag with cloths rather than nice and lean set.
I am so disappointed that this a fault of Assembling. I have doubt that the the backlit is ok but the assembly engineer has forgotton to change the keys itself. It is a shame. It is very expensive configuration, and now I am on buisness trip to London, Europe, and dont know what to do? Can I contact Lenovo there, it doesn seems that I am going back to US for next three months
    Regards,
    George

  • Keyboard backlight not working correctly after leopard update

My mbp originally came with Tiger (10.4), when Leopard (10.5) was released I updated. The backlight for the keyboard works normally until I installed the 10.5.1 update. After 10.5.1 and all other updates the keyboard backlight no longer worked correctly. In low light conditions or while working in the dark I have to manually turn it on instead of it doing it automatically. Is this a bug or is there a way to fix it?

Yes, I have to cover the sensors with my hands in order for them to turn off when light is back on, otherwise they just stay on.
