My keyboard is not responsive upon booting up my iMac

I powered down my iMac for one day.  Upon booting up, my mouse and keyboard do not communicate with the screen.  How do I fix this?

Hello:
Sorry, it is short for system management controller.
You reset it like this:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
That sometimes fixes odd problems.  It cannot hurt anything to reset the SMC.

  • Keyboard input not working at boot

    Hello --
I don't get keyboard input for ~30 seconds at boot, and I'm not sure why. I'm using a hand-rolled kernel with no initrd, though when I use the stock Arch kernel with initrd it does the same thing. According to my kernel logs, the keyboard is recognized before the root filesystem is mounted (and it appears to be PS2, not USB), and from reading the rc scripts, little or nothing happens after the ttys are started.
udev starts before the root fs is mounted, and when root is fscked at boot, I don't encounter this problem. Therefore I think udev is at fault. Via I can't find any information on telling udev to deal with the keyboard earlier.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Other than putting "sleep 30" in my rc scripts, that is.

Sorry, I wasn't being very clear.
I'm using a laptop, and lsusb doesn't report anything except the buses themselves. Therefore I concluded that my keyboard is not a USB keyboard, as I mentioned above.
This is booting to a tty console, not to X, so it can't be a KDE issue. And I have full control of my keyboard with GRUB; it's just the kernel that hesitates to acknowledge its existence.

  • External HD not recognised upon boot up

I have been using a LaCie Ext HD for years. The back up software is Super Duper which has been working fine.
Recently when booting up, neither the installed LaCie device nor the BackUp icon is opened.
I have tried unplugging and rebooting etc but nothing seems to work.
Any suggestions from you experts out there please.

OK. Mine is MacMini OS 10.4.11 (not Intel)
Am booting from my Mini. Ext device is not loading.
    LaCie BackUp is supposedly Bootable.
Connection is by Firewire. I really do not know what Port.
Following your post have tried shutting down and re-booting holding down Key O (thinks, should I have read 'ZERO'?).
Booted up with usual desk top (No LaCie) Checked in Preferences and confirmed SU disc is the Mac OS10.
    Here's hoping.
    NN.

  • Keyboard does not connect to boot camp

keyboard doesn't connect of boot camp windows 7 on airbook 11

Update: if I use a USB extender it works!  This is really strange....

  • Keyboard & trackpad not active when booted!

    Got a white 2.0GHz Intel Core2Duo 13" with 1GB RAM and OS 10.5.8.
The keyboard and trackpad are suddenly locked when the the machine is booted. The cursor is in the same place after restart - not movable - but not frozen either. Because when I insert a CD or DVD it autostart the respective item, and the cursor becomes the spinning beach ball for some seconds....iow. NOT frozen. None of the keyboard buttons will work except the on/off button. So I thought for a minute that the keyboard was physically shortcutted. But upon restart, I was able to run a PRAM reset (Alt-Cmd-R-P) - also ejecting a DVD, that would NOT eject when fully booted....
So it must be a software related problem. Or is it a "panel lock" or "key lock" function that I've activated accidentally???
Thanks for any input on this. I will in the meantime try to restart from the OS DVD.

    Some additional info:
System profile tells me it's a MacBook 1,1 with a Intel Core Duo (not a Core2) - if it makes any difference.
Well, I booted up from a Leopard install DVD, and everything related to keyboard and trackpad works. Run Repair Disk Permissions, and Verify Disk - just when I'm at it!
Restart from internal disk again....Nope. No keyboard or mouse action....
Time the reinstall the complete OS perhaps.

  • X11 Keyboard Settings Not Applied on Boot

I'm having problems setting my keyboard layout on boot in X11 using Xorg.conf.d. Specifically, I would like to set the default X keyboard to be Programmer Dvorak on boot with the caps:swapescape option on. I have followed the instructions on the Wiki for setting the default X keyboard; however, on boot the caps:swapescape option is applied but otherwise the layout is the standard US QWERTY layout. Setting the keyboard manually using the following command always works:
setxkbmap us -variant "dvp" -option "caps:swapescape
Here is the relevant Xorg.conf.d (10-keyboard.conf) file:
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "Keyboard Defaults"
    MatchIsKeyboard "yes"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us"
    Option "XkbVariant" "dvp"
    Option "XkbOptions" "caps:swapescape"
    EndSection
The other thing that is strange is that the output of setxkbmap doesn't change between boot (incorrect keymap) and when the keymap is set manually.
$ setxkbmap -query -print -verbose 10
    Setting verbose level to 10
    locale is C

Any pointers in the correct direction would be greatly appreciated.

I remember having had the same issue with Gnome which ignores the settings in Xorg.d completely. I would assume the same for Xfce although not for WMFS.

  • "I" keyboard button not responsive like other keys, help?

The letter "I" button on my keyboard on my Macbook Air 13-inch is sometimes not as responsive as the rest of the keys. While the rest of the keyboard keys require only a light touch or tap, the "I" key has to be pressed harder in order for it to work most of the time. Sometimes, it's fine. The only reason it's working while I'm typing this is because I'm making sure I don't mispell anything. It's become a huge pain when typing book reports and essays and I'd really like to know what to do or what I can do to fix this. Please help.

Any other options if the cleaning part doesn't work? Anyone? I can't afford $1,000 to get this fixed AT ALL.
If cleaning doesn't work, the only thing to be done is replace the keyboard. That's a heck of a lot cheaper than $1000 (but keep in mine, if you have damage inside, cleaning/replacing the keyboard isn't going to be the whole fix). If you definitely decide to buy a new keyboard, I'd take the old keyboard off and soak it in distilled water for a day or two, periodically working the problem keys, then tilt/shake it every which way to get as much water out as possible, then let it dry for a few days, until there's no possibility of moisture remaining inside. If it still doesn't work, nothing lost, as you were buying a new keyboard anyway.
You may also want to consider a BlueTooth/wireless keyboard. Sure, it's something else to carry around (if portability is an issue), but Apple's BT keyboard is about as small/light as possible. Something to consider.

  • Keyboard light not working on boot camp!

    Hi
I received some updates for the Boot camp just recently, and since then the keyboard light doesn't turn on anymore when it gets dark! I'm working on the windows XP...
I feel i made a huge mistake accepting the update!!!!
    has anyone encountered such problem?
    Thanks

Have you tried manually turning it on?
Press the F8 button I believe to toggle the backlight
You may have accidentally switched it off or something
If that doesn't work, try F10 to brighten it just to see if it's working

  • Internet icon touch/toggle on my keyboard is not responsive

what are the lit up icons on the keyboard to the right of the power button?  Are they called toggles?  I keep losing my network connectivity after 5 minutes and that lit strip shuts off, not allowing me to touch the network icon to get it back.  I can't find settings in the computer for it because I don't know what it is called.  Can anyone help me?  It is also F8 but also nonresponsive after lights on icon strip go out.
Also my volume is very low but computer repair company says nothing I can do about it within the unit - I can maybe add a sound bar or speaker

  • Windows partition will not open using Boot Camp on iMac 10.9.5

OS:  27" desktop iMac, Maverick 10.9.5, 8 GB RAM
HD Partions:  iMac OS X, Windows 7,  Boot Camp
For some unknown reason I am having problems getting Windows 7 to open after starting up in Boot Camp, and it's getting progressively worse. After starting Boot Camp I select the Windows 7 partition and either click on that icon or press "Return/Enter". This is where everything freezes and I have to shut down and reboot again into Boot Camp to try again. Sometimes it works, other times not. I've already tried 8 times tonight but can't get into the Windows 7 partition. The OS X partition and everything else is working fine and I have all of my updates.
Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

I am trying to boot into an existing W7. When I turned on the computer this morning I booted straight into Boot Camp and then successfully went into W7 with no problems, never going into the OS X partition. I later rebooted straight into OS X (the default startup) and read your comments.
I entered the four lines of commands you suggested in Terminal and this is what I got...

  • Keyboard not responsive in Win8.1 Login Screen (Normal/Safe mode)

Dear all professional in HP technical support team,
I had conduct upgrade from Window 8 to Window 8.1 last month, it work well without any problem until 4 days ago, the PC cannot start and stuck in HP logo and keep looping for 2 hours.
Then I try to boot in to Recovery mode, conduct dozens of Chkdsk command (chkdsk c: /R /X), turnout all bad sectors has been allocated and the Window finally can boot in to login screen.
However, I am unable to login to desktop since the USB HP wireless keyboard is not responsive, the USB HP wireless mouse work fine, and I am unable to activate 'On-screen Keyboard', I was manage to boot into safe mode, but it turnout the same, because the keyboard not responsive, I cannot input the password and login to both Normal and Safe mode.
I had try to attach a USB wired keyboard and USB wired mouse as well, it turnout the same, mouse is working and keyboard is not responsive.
The mouse and keyboard are working both recovery mode and BIOS environment.
Othe than Reset the PC, please advise is there anyway I can login to the desktop again, or I need to manually re-install the USB wireless keyboard driver from command prompt in Recovery mode.
Thanks for you help in advance.
    Best Regard.
    Bruch

    Hi again Bruch2168,
Thank you for the quick reply!
Since you are not able to return to a previous restore point in recovery mode, I recommend returning your system back to a previous restore point. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8).
Should the problem continue, I suggest performing a backup and recovery of your operating system. This can be done by following the steps in this resource on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 8). This should return your system back to factory defaults.

  • Macbook pro 2011 mouse / keyboard not response in heavy load

When I am playing games in the 2011 Macbook pro. Mouse clicks / keyboard sometimes not response or delay, this occur when the machine under heavy load.
This won't happened in my old BLACK core duo Macbook.
    Does everyone notice this?

If your machine is less than a month old, you should use your warranty and call AppleCare (you have 90 days of phone support) or take your machine back to the Apple Store (make an appointment with the Genius Bar first) and let them deal with the issue.
If yours is the 13" model, there is a thread on here (somewhere) about trackpad and keyboard failures when also using Bluetooth, I think (don't quote me on that - I don't have the affected machines so I don't follow the thread too closely).
But I do believe that Apple is aware of the issue and had 'fixed' it in either a patch preceding 10.9.4 or in 10.9.4 itself.
    Give them a call...

  • Keyboard & Trackpad not working but USB are...

    Hi - 2007 white Macbook, 10.6.8...
Today the machine appeared to keep freezing completely... after numerous checks (including booting in 10.5), it transpired it was the keyboard and trackpad that weren't responding, not the OS. I know this because I plugged in a USB keyboard/mouse to check and they work fine.
That said, the onboard keyboard & trackpad do work upon boot up for anything from 1 to 10 minutes. Then they just stop responding and I have to resort back to USB again. I can see others who've had similar problems but I can't find a solution.
It doesn't appear to be a fatel hardware error because they will always work on boot up for a limited time. All updates are applied and disc permissions repaired.
Anyone know how to solve this? Appreciate the help - stars all round, thanks.

It doesn't sound like a fatal hardware issue but I think your Top Case Assembly or the connection cable are going bad. The top case is basically the plate containing your keyboard, trackpad, and power button.
The fact that it works via USB basically confirms that, but there is the outside shot that the connector on the Logic Board could be the problem....
Before you take it to an Apple Store, try to boot it up from your software discs that came with your Mac (disc #1, you can do this by restarting your Mac with the disc in and holding down the C key after the startup chime) and see if the problem occurs. If it does, I would have an Apple Service Provider or an Apple Store replace your Top Case for you.If it's okay on the discs, run your Disk Utility on the software disc and reinstall the OS.
    I hope this helps!

  • On screen lock screen, the keyboard does not work, switching to the switch-user screen the keyboard works again

    Mac OS-X 10.7.5, Mac Air.
This began about 5 to 7 days ago.
    Steps to reproduce:
    Step 1:
Close the lid, or the system 'powers down', or goes to the screen saver mode.
    Step 2:
Open the lid, press the power button, or what ever to wake up the Mac Air
The "Enter your password" screen is presented.
They keyboard is not responsive, I cannot type anything.
The touch pad works, I can power on/off the machine.
    They keyboard is not functional.
Result: I cannot log in again.
Expected behavior: The keyboard should be working I should be able to unlock the screen.
    Workarounds:
Then click on my name, or any other user of the machine and it works fine.
I can now unlock the screen and return to where I was.
    Expected behavior:
I should not have to go to the "Switch User Screen" to log back in.

    More detail:  Some keys on the keyboard do work, ie: caps lock toggles the led, and the function keys across the top seem to work {that is I can adjust brightness, and so forth}
the letter and numbers, and perhap others do not work.

  • Magic Mouse Not Working with Boot Camp.

    Hi All,
I have a wired issue here. I installed Windows XP on my iMac 27" using bootcamp and all worked fine till one day my Magic Mouse stopped working in Windows. Now the funny part is windows is able to detect my mouse and says that the device is working normally but the green light under my mouse is OFF. No matter what i try i cannot get it to come on. But the moment i boot to Mac OS X the mouse works perfectly fine. My Apple Wireless KB works just fine in Windows. A USB mouse also works fine. I have also installed Parallels on my Mac and when i boot into the Windows partition using Parallels the Magic Mouse works fine. Any idea as to whats going on here.?
    John.

I have a new (July 2009) iMac24 and neither the wireless mighty mouse nor keyboard work with Boot Camp XP Home Edition SP3. They install OK with the Bluetooth control panel, but then after five or ten seconds, drop out of the control panel and have to be discovered again. I spent two hours today with a Mac support expert, but no joy. We both gave up. It seems the wireless mouse/keyboard does not work with Boot Camp. If anyone hears of a solution, please let me know.
