My keyboard on my computer keeps switching to using symbols as I'm typing.

My keyboard on my computer keeps switching to using symbols as I'm typing. I've gone through and changed/reset/etc the keyboard, text, and language settings. I've tried to figure out if a key is stuck, but couldn't find one. I've disabled function keys to check if that affects anything, it does not. The keys will eventually, spontaneously switch back to normal (with or without my troubleshooting). It keeps switching back and forth without rhyme or reason. I eventually linked a wireless keyboard, which types correctly- even when my computer keyboard does not- so I figure it must be a technical malfunction of somekind. Using this other keyboard permanently would be fine, except it is not my own and I am traveling abroad while working from my computer.
Please help guide me to a solution!
Thanks!

You may just have to take it into your local Apple Store and have them run diagnostics. Some applications will let you type diacritical marks if you hold down, for example, the a and e keys, but that doesn't seem if that's what you're experiencing.
If you've already fooled around with Language & test, Input Sources, etc., then it's likely a hardware malfunction.

  • Why is my computer keep switching language

Since yesterday my computer keep switching languages.
I am working in both English and French so I have both keyboard set up. By default my keyboard is English and sometime I use the French keyboard when needed.
I really need to be in English for most of the time and it is changing all the time.
    Please help.

Are you perhaps accidentally hitting the keyboard shortcut for switching keyboards, Apple/command plus space?

  • My computer keeps switching its internet setting from Airport to Ethernet without me doing anything. How can I fix this??

My computer keeps switching its internet type from "Airport" to  "Ethernet." As my computer is not connected to an Ethernet cable, the ethernet does not work, and so I lose internet connection every time it does this. And it does this two or three times a minute (no exaggeration). This means that, by the time I've changed the setting and refreshed my page, the internet type has changed again, and I'm back to square one.
So far, I've tried the following:
-Reordering the list of priorities on the "Network Preferences" page
-Going to the Ethernet "advanced" options and switching everything to either "off" or from "automatically" to "manually"
    -Rendering the Ethernet inactive
-Finally, I created a new location with only airport on
Usually, doing these things makes the problem go away for a day or two, and then it just comes back again.
It's not a problem with the internet itself, as this has been an ongoing issue for the past few months, and I've switched locations three times since then.
Does anyone know how to make my computer stay on Airport, and NOT switch to the Ethernet setting all the time?

    Hi samanthaspunt,
I would first try these steps:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If that does not help, I would try un-syncing and resyncing the music via this article:
iTunes: Syncing media content to iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1351
    Cheers!

  • Computer keeps switching out of its application????

When you are in an application the computer will just switch out of the app. Like when you are typing in word all of a sudden the window will go lite grey and you are no longer typing in word...The application will be there you just have to re-click the screen but it is very difficult to work with. I have looked at the mouse settings and can't find anything that is causing this. This happens no matter what app u are working with, even sys prefs. If you move the mouse just a little it will switch out of the app. This is happening on a ibook G4 1.2Mhz. Any ideas....?

    Hi,
You bought 2 new cables and still have the problem, the only thing I can think of is the LAN port itself. Do you have friends, relatives ...just bring those cables and plug to their machines to see, and also physically check the LAN ports to see any difference.
    Regards.

  • My computer keeps defaulting from a GB format to US format keyboard with a US flag in the top bar. How do I get it to go back to a GB flag and stay with a GB flag?

My computer keeps defaulting from a GB format to US format keyboard with a US flag in the top bar. How do I get it to go back to a GB flag and stay with a GB flag?
This only started 2 days ago.
I have seen much on line as this seems to be a common problem, however none of the suggestions posted seem to work.

    Thanks Drew,
On clicking the US flag I had previously then unchecked the US box. It has rechecked itself, and I have unchecked it again. The GB English remains checked.
The flag icon has now gone completely from the top bar (just replaced with character and keyboard viewer) -but that's fine. That's different to previous attempts to fix the issue.
Hopefully now I will remain able to type a £ sign on the keyboard rather than get the criss-cross symbol. It may well default back in about an hour (which is what has been happening since this started 2 days ago). If it does I'll come back on here. Many thanks in the mean time for your help.

  • Keyboard layout keeps switching after 10.9.4 upgrade

After the recommended upgrade to Maverick 10.9.4, all of us in my group have the problem that the keyboard layout keeps switching every time a new Word document is opened (and possibly on a number of other occasions).
    We have MacBookPros 2011, 2012, 2013, all regretting having upgraded to OsX 10.9.4. As per instructions, mine's a Retina late 2013 and got a 2.8 GhZ i7 with 8GB 1600MHz DDR3, 500GB SSD - no performance issues!
There have been two discussion threads as far as I can see; none with a solution.
"Fixing" the keyboard to a single one is not an option for polyglot people like us who actually need several keyboard layouts.
I have fed back to Apple as recommended weeks ago, but to no avail so far.
This persistent problem is driving all of us mad. Does no one on this list have any answers? Surely there's some setting somewhere that turned a perfectly well working system (10.9.3) into one that's costing us tens of minutes every single day (10.9.4)?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alexander

There is a box that no one had mentioned...
System Preferences---> Keyboard---> Input Source---> Uncheck the "Automatically switch to a document's input source. The input source is used until the document is closed."
kafetzou... You may want to delete the Turkish keyboard so that the English is on top of the list. Then re-add the Turkish keyboard, this will make it under the English. Though I don't know if this will help your problem, or the box that I mentioned above.

  • Keyboard keeps switching to foreign keyboard after using diction/voice control

Whenever I click the little mic button when typing in text (no matter in what application it is), my iPhone keeps switching it over to a foreign keyboard and I can only switch back by reopening the app or quitting the text frield and clicking it again. It is very annoying. I switched my keyboard to Kanji a while ago to test something out, but I turned off that keyboard right after I didn't need to use it, now it keeps switching back to it. Is there any way to fix this?

I found the same problem. My (Australian) keyboard has { and [ on the same key. The shortcut for "History, Back" is cmd+[ . This conflicts with the shortcut cmd+{ , and going back takes priority it seems.
What does work for me to shift between tabs (even though it doesn't show in the menu shortcuts) is:
cmd + shift + { (to move tab to the left)
cmd + shift + } (to move tab to the right)
See if that works for you. Regards JD

  • My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power, BEFORE I switch it on with the button, why? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out.

My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power supply (when I plug it to the outlet), BEFORE I switch on the button on the computer, why is this happening? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out and I'm forced to restart it, that's when the compter starts on its own when I turn on the power.

    Hello Engender,
I should have followed up with a progress report because I eventually eliminated all the problems I was having with my Mac Pro, now it's behaving like a new computer… beautifully.   I did originally take Grant's advice above, changing the setting that I had in the System Preferences > Energy Saver but that only stopped from rebooting on its own when I shut down my Mac properly.  Otherwise it continued to restart on its own after freezing or crushing when I switched on the power.  I took my machine to the Apple Store and after many tests they couldn't find anything wrong with it.  I was very depressed about the whole business.
It was after going onto many of the other Apple related websites that I discovered that it wasn't a faulty power switch or fan, as as I originally thought, but found out that my problem was related to the Graphic Card and possibly I did not have enough ram (I had the original amount of 2 GB).  The original card that came with the computer: 512 MB ATI Radeon X1900 XT was over heating and forcing my machine to shut down, I think it was because I had upgraded to OSX Lion which on its own requires at least 2 GB of ram to operate well.  I added 4 GB of Ram to the 2GB I had (4GB kit (2GBx2), Apple 240-pin FBDIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 upgrades for Apple Mac Pro (4-core) 1st Gen. - 2006-2007 Desktop/PC, CT579443 from Crucial.com about $160 for the set) and replaced the Graphic Card with ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB from Apple (around $260), (ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010) - Apple Store (U.S.))  This card works very well with my original Mac Pro 2008.  I installed it about two weeks ago and no problem with it starting on its own, over heating or freezing.  OSX Lion works well and I'm thinking of upgrading to Mountain Lion once I learn that my Mac Pro 1.1  will work with the new hardware I installed.
Your problem could just be the power cord but I agree with you that doesn't sound right, when I mentioned faulty switch I meant the part where the power cord meets the power button, the unit which houses the power distribution, I thought at first that it could be faulty but changed my mind because of the computer overheating.
I don't know if this is of any help to you but I hope your trouble will be solved with the new cord.

  • My computer with 2 monitors keeps switching sides

I have 2 monitors on my computers - 2 Mac Pros (2011) and an iMac.  All are running 10.9.5.  I have one monitor in each case that is the "home" monitor - with the dock and files on the desktop.  All 3 of my computers keep switching the Dock to the other monitor .. randomly.  Once switched, the Dock stays on the other monitor until I use system preferences to change the arrangement.
Has anyone found a cure for this problem?

    Eric
You wanted me to mark my post as solved ---- I did that after 48 hours --- and now the problem is back.
My dock switched to the second monitor today.
How do I UNMARK my answer as  "solved?"

  • I am trying to log onto a Mac Mini I haven't used in awhile and I forgot the password. I am trying to reset the password with my apple ID but the computer keeps saying the Apple ID and the password are incorrect whenever I know they are.

I am trying to log onto a Mac Mini I haven't used in awhile and I forgot the password. I am trying to reset the password with my apple ID but the computer keeps saying the Apple ID and the password are incorrect whenever I know they are, as I am using the exact same ID right now.
I have switched my password in the past, so my theory is my mac mini thinks that my password has not changed and it will not update because The Wi-Fi password has also changed so it cannot connect to any servers...Does that sound like I am on the right track?
Is there a way to update my Wi-Fi password  (saved into the computer) without logging on?

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.

  • Macbook Pro 10.6.8 - Cursor moves by itself, types by itself, opens dashboard by itself, stops responding to keysto22000 there you go! Have switched out keyboards to no avail. Do not use wireless.

Cursor moves by itself, types by itself, opens dashboard by itself, stops responding to keysto22000 - there be a good example. Seems to like the number 2. Have switched out keyboards to no avail. Do not use wireless. Does not start immediately upon turning on computer. Everything is okay from 10 to 20 minutes, then bang. Can deattach then attach keyboard and get a few moments of quiet. All this started today.

If the same erratic behavior occurs when the external KB and mouse are completely disconnected, I think it's time for a Genius Bar appointment to have the problem diagnosed.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
You'll probably want to get the machine revved up ahead of time so it's misbehaving when you walk in the door, rather than count on it to act up — or not — after you and the Genius have been standing around waiting for a while. (BTW, I'm assuming that once it starts acting up, it continues to do so until you give up and shut it down. Is that true?)

  • After updating to ios5 my i phone and it keeps switching off

I recently updated my Iphone 3gs to iOS5 and now my phone keeps switching itself off and on again,
I like the new iOS so would like to keep it if anyone knows how I can sort this out?

i was having some different issues after the upgrade - my phone wouldn't stay on the 3g network and I couldn't make/receive calls or sms or access the internet via 3G. I tried a regular recovery, which didn't work, but just did a DFU restore. apparently it's a different type of restore... anyway it worked so far.
this is how you do it
They probably used what is refered to as a DFU restore. To do this yourself you must plug the phone into the computer while on. Hold the sleep button for 3s, then hold both the home and the sleep button for 10s, then release the sleep button and hold only the home button untill the phone apears in itunes as a device in recovery mode. If done correctly the iPhone display will remain off once the device has connected. Proceed to restore.

  • Iphone 5 keeps switching to silent on its own

My Iphone 5 is stuck on silent mode, or more accurately it keeps switching to silent on its own.
The problem started about 2 days ago, after upgrading to iOS 7.1 last week. The phone keeps switching in and out of silent mode (without the button being touched) and mostly stays in silent. It's not a speaker problem, nor a settings problem, as I’ve checked every bit of online advice I could find. I tried restarting, resetting, restoring, cleaning the headphone jack, and nothing helps.
An attempt to see if it’s a headphone related issue (by plugging and unplugging while restarting in various combinations) got it working fine for about 5 minutes, then it switched back to silent.
Needless to say, the phone did not suffer from any physical damage prior to the problem.

I have the identical problem, and it started when I upgraded as well.
Trips to the AT&T store, and to Apple twice have not been able to solve. (Other than telling me for $300 they would replace it since my phone is 6 months past the 1 year warranty) All the resetting, wiping, even restoring to factory defaults using iTunes from the computer have failed. I finally had a tech open it and look at it, and it's pristine.
I've suspected software since the problem started occurring, because it is so random, and the fact that the speaker, mic, headphone, etc... all work fine.
Just while it's sitting on the desk, it will jump back and forth from silent to ring mode, but mostly stays in silent.
I'm convinced this is a bug

  • Since iTunes update 8.1.1, iTunes keeps switching to mini-player mode

As the title says, when I open up iTunes after my macbook has been booted it keeps switching to mini-player mode instead of the full library. Sometimes does it when I open up iTunes whilst playing music as well. Never had this problem before seems to have started after the 8.1.1 update.
Any ideas how I could fix it or is it a new bug, tried deleting the preferences file in my home directory.
    Screen shot:
    http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/4136/screenu.png

Thanks for that. The answer was really quite simple! For some reason with iTunes 8.1 it is necessary to turn of Airport Express speakers in order to watch music videos on the computer: before the videos played normally (without audio through AE speakers).
