My lacie hard drive cannot be copied to or read from

My lacie hard drive was working great for months. When it was working I had the lacie tower as an icon on my desktop. Now, I have a LaCie Disk icon that looks orange with a firewire symbol on it. And now, when I try and copy things to it, it says "Attempting to copy to the LaCie Disk Failed. The disk cannot be read from or written to." I don't know exactly when this icon appeared on my desktop, but it was within the past 2 weeks or so. Perhaps the installation of virtual pc is what caused this problem.Whatever, how do i fix this problem?

Don't write on to or use that disk until you have data recovery software ready. The more you use it, the less data you'll recover. If you search these boards there are numerous threads listing data recover software.
You could consider anotther external drive to act as a back-up rather than storage drive - which will allow you to recover the data more quickly.

  • Transferring Photos to an external hard drive. I Copied all the pictures from a folder in iPhoto and Pasted on the Hard Drive. However, only about 50% were Pasted. It will not let me Copy

I am trying to Transfer my Photos to an External Hard drive as a Back Up. Since I want to be able to Transfer them to a Windows based computer if necassary, I did not use the Automatic Mac Backup program.
To Transfer them. I Copy all the Pictures in a folder in IPhoto, then Paste them in a Folder of the same name, which I have created on the External Hard Drive. It will Paste about 50% of the Photos. Then, when I try to go back and Copy and Paste the rest, it acts like it has already done that. HELP!!!

By default, iPhoto keeps pictures in a special library which isn't user friendly - but is effective for the program. The best way to move pictures from iPhoto is to export them from the iPhoto program.
Start up iPhoto and select all the photos you want to move to your external drive. Go to the File Menu and select Export... For size choose original and then select the external drive as the destination. (It would be good to create a folder for the photos first.)
Since export doesn't create folders and you may want the photos organized, you can select one event or one album at a time and export each separately, putting them into separate folders on the external.

  • TS1550 Time Machine backup error with LaCie hard drive

When trying to backup in Time Machine to a new LaCie external hard drive, I get "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “LaCie". The backup disk image “/Volumes/LaCie/(owner's name’s) MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."  Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this?  Do I need to erase and re-partition the LaCie hard drive?  Thanks.

  • Cant copy to Lacie Hard drive

I have a lacie hard drive that i use mostly with my pc. I had some files on my macbook that I wanted to put on that hard drive but when i try to copy them it wont let me and says that the file cant be modified. what can i do?

Your PC-oriented drive is undoubtedly formatted NTFS. Drives in that format are read-only for the Mac OS, unless you install third-party software such as NTFS-3G (freeware) or Tuxera NTFS (commercial) that enables full access to them.

  • I am trying to copy my IPhoto's library to my LaCie hard drive but when I drag the iPhoto icon over it won't transfer, whist do I have to do?

Hi I am new it IMac and can't transfer my iPhoto's to my LaCie hard drive please help

You need to Copy the iPhoto Library.photolibrary package from the Pictures folder in your Username folder.
Open a Finder window and select the Pictures entry in the Sidebar, have the view setting set to Columns view.
Find a Folder/Package called iPhoto Library.photolibrary and select it, one click. Then press the Command and c keys together to Copy it. then select your external drive and press Command and the v keys together that will paste it to your external.
Once that is done and you know it was copied successfully Open iPhoto with the Option/Alt key held down. That will bring up a dialog window where you can select which iPhoto Library to open. browse to your external drive and select the folder you just copied over to it.
From then on iPhoto will default to opening that copy of your library. Once you know it is working correctly you can then Delete, Move To Trash, the one in your Pictures folder.

I need to sell my macbook pro 17" 2007 but want to save all files to an external lacie hard drive. What the best way to do this please?

  • Cannot access LaCie hard drives

I installed my new AEBS today. I installed all of the available software updates. I connected an HP LaserJet printer and two LaCie hard drives to the base station via a powered Dr. Bott T7 USB Hub. (My computer is a new MacBook Pro 17" running OS 10.4.10)
My wireless signal seems to be stable (using the AEBS in bridge mode connected to Qwest DSL wireless router).
The wireless printer connection works fine.
The problem is not being able to mount the hard drives. Both drives worked when connected directly to my MacBook, prior to connecting them to the AEBS.
Opening the AirPort Utility, I can see both drives listed under "Disks" (This pane shows storage devices connected to your base station). File sharing is enabled; Secure Shared Disks: With base station password; Guest Access: Not allowed.
I get the dialog box: "The AirPort Disk "name" became available. What do you want to do? Action: Connect with Password." I enter the password that I selected during set-up and select "Remember this password in my keychain." When I click OK, I get the error message "Connection Failed - unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please re-type the login information or contact the disk's administrator." I have doubled-checked and re-entered this information.
I have tried turning the power off and on (both the AEBS and the hard drives) and restarting the computer.
    What am I missing?

    Hi,
I've been trying to work out the Hard Drive problems with the Airport Extreme for a few days and have had some success, so I'll share the info if its any use!
First of all, your printer and both hard drives all run off their own power supply, therefore, you don't need to have a powered usb hub, or just take the plug out and keep using the hub, save yourself a plug!
More importantly, I have had the same thing with the hard drive appearing in the Airport Utility yet whenever I try to connect, it comes up with an error and can't mount, although when I go to network and connect it appears but then goes wrong at the last part mounting, this is what I found...
the first time I plugged hard drive in all worked nicely, however, any time I have unplugged the power to the Aiport Extreme and connected again it'll show but never connect. When I went to make a few partitions I realised that if you unplug the router and repower, whatever HD name its seen before doesn't work until the HD name was changed again. For example....
I called my first HD to connect 'wifiHD', was working fine, next time i unplugged router was still showing in network but I couldn't mount it, I then plugged it to the mac and renamed it 'wifiDISK' for example and plugged it back into the router and it worked fine! Its very strange cos when I needed to unplug it last time I then had the same trouble and just renamed it back to 'wifiHD' it worked fine! Its a little flaw which is a right bugger to find so the bottom line is...
*RENAME THE HARD DRIVE EVERY TIME YOU UNPLUG THE ROUTER AND YOU CAN MOUNT IT AGAIN*
Another tip is format your HD in 'Mas OSX Extended' as it can be read by both mac and PC over the network. Then as windows isn't the best when you go to 'My Network Places' and 'Add Network Place' if you can't find the HD or even the router then enter
    \\routername\\hardrivename\
in this format into the box, it'll take a mo but it'll then ask for the password! I personally have my hard drive guest access read + write so I entered
    user: guest
password: base station password (or disk password as selected in airport utility)
    and it all worked!
Sorry for the long explanation, hope this has helped!

  • Opening previous itunes on my LaCie Hard Drive

My powerbook was stolen recently. Just before that, luckily, I had gone to the Genius bar (trying to selectively move music from my itunes library on the laptop to my LaCie Hard Drive, to free up some space). I learned that moving your library is an all or nothing proposition, I wouldn't be able to selectively move music to the LaCie. So I copied the entire library to the LaCie HD. Then, we set up some alias folders on my desktop whereas I could switch the itunes library folder, that I wanted access to, into the Mac HD music folder. Then, when I opened itunes, I could open it on the LaCie HD, or open the itunes music library on my laptop. Then I could just delete all the music on the laptop I didn't want to carry with me for work travel. But then, the laptop got stolen. Now, I'm on my old G4 Quicksilver, trusty ol' guy, where I have an old music library on it. I've also bought a few cds from itunes using this library. Now, I'm about to go on another trip, want to update my ipod and transfer new music to it, the first time on this computer, but I can't get access to my itunes music library on the LaCie HD. I tried changing, (under preferences -advanced- location change to La Cie HD), but it still opens the Mac HD, not the LaCie. I even tried changing the location, (same pref-adv-change location), and restarting, didn't work. It would still open the Quicksilver itunes. I tried changing out the itunes music folder, moving the folder from the Mac HD music window onto the desktop and moving the LaCie itunes music folder into the Mac HD Music window/folder, but it tries to copy it there ("not enough room to copy").
So - how can I use the itunes on the LaCie, where the bulk of my music is? When I updated itunes, did it not allow me to have two libraries anymore? I'm willing to sacrifice the Quicksilver itunes library to switch to the one on the LaCie. I just need to keep itunes on the LaCie because it's too big for my Mac HD. And if I have to sacrifice the Quicksilver itunes music library, how can I save the music I've bought from itunes that's only in that library? Do I have to burn it to a disc and then re-import it? I must say, there are definite advantages to just going out and buying actual cd's!
Thanks for any help you can offer! Edward

Still a little problem. I did everything you said, and it seems itunes updated with the library on the external, and I saw that the album artwork was updating. I can play songs that I click on, the only thing now seems to be that all the albums/playlists, that go with the music, are missing. Only the playlists/albums from the old internal itunes are there.
The one link you sent "Moving you iTunes Music Folder" - talked about consolidating after moving. Should I do that? It was odd, however, because some of the steps mentioned in that procedure were not available to me - like "click the new folder button in the Change Music Folder Location Window." I just did as you said and navigated to the external.
From itunes now, should I consolidate library? Once I plug my ipod into this new computer, it will be synched to it and any mistakes will be reflected on it too right? I could loose music if I hook the ipod up with itunes not being in total working order?
Thanks. I really appreciate your help. Hopefully I can cancel my genius bar appt. tomorrow and not have to lug the tower and drives in, especially because I'm leaving town early Tues. AM and have a million things to do first. Thanks.

  • Lacie hard drive, how do I view the files in Finder so I can delete some backups?

Buy another backup drive. Keep this as is. depends on what and how you do backups. TimeMachine? there are program utilities to help manage but it is 'suppose' to manage itself (have 3.5x capacity of data you backup helps). You didn't say what type of backup method was used.

  • My Lacie Hard Drive is no longer being recognized by my MacBook, please help.

    Hi all,
I have a Lacie external hard drive (LaCie Rugged XL eSATA 3Gb/s | USB 2.0) that I have been using on my MacBook (timemachine) (late 2008, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X 10.9.1). One day it stopped being recognized, not showing up on the desk top, the disk utility program, etc.
I Googled many articles, blogs and support communities but have yet to find any solution. I also went to the Lacie support site and followed the trouble shooting instructions - changed my power source, usb cable, and tried the drive out on 3 different computers. The results: The drive works fine on the other computers (OS X and Windows) using the same power and usb cords. So Lacie recommened I contact Apple but my MacBook is not under warranty so I have decided to try my luck with the Apple Support Community. If any one has had this problem or knows the solution, please let me know. I would like to continue to use my MacBook with this Lacie hard drive.
    Thanks

    Hi Dibenkorn,
Yes, both USB ports are not recognizing this lacie external hard drive. I also tried the SMC reset but that did not change anything. I have another external hard drive (smaller one) and it works on this computer fine and like I said before the Lacie works fine on my other (older) MacBook. I just can not figure out what went wrong or what happened...

You can never, never migrate an installed copy of PSE. It's just too complex and you can't get to all the bits and bobs.
First you will have to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
which will not seem to do anything, but is necessary to break the links within PSE so that you can pitch the bits manually. Then you will have to go around, not only to applications, but also to your username>library>preferences and most importantly to the library at the top level of your hard drive>application support>adobe, and remove everything you can find. Spotlight will not help with this kind of search, so don't try that.
Then you can install PSE from scratch.

  • Can some please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my Mac

Can someone please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my new Mac.  I ended up getting a bunch of duplicates. My old Mac has an older version of iPhoto while the new Mac has iPhoto '11.  Is that the cause of the problem?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
    Regards

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?

I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?  Do I have to make a playlist for each cd and then transfer it to my iPhone?

When you buy your new iMac you will be able to have the installation process transfer all your applications, data (including music, pictures, documents, etc) and settings to your new computer. In the past that was done via Firewire. I'm not entirely sure of the process with the new iMacs that don't have firewire. I think it can be done via ethernet and probably via tha thunderbolt cord using a firewire adapter but you'll want to check that out.
With the your new computer properly connected to your old computer, the initial booting of the new computer will include the ability to move everything over.
If for some reason you don't want to do that (smart if you have some horrible software issue that is causing problems) you can connect your old computer to the new one and start it in Target Disk mode where it will be seen as a hard drive. You can then manually copy over all your music and import that into iTunes (and any other data you want).
Somebody here will surely point you to directions for connecting an older iMac with no Thunderbolt to a newer iMac with no Firewire.
