My LACIE hard drive shows up on some computers but not all.

I need your help, as I have searched around and can't find a solution to my peculiar problem.
I have a 500gb LACIE Rugged hard drive product ID. RUG FWSA
It has these connections: firewire 800, firewire 400, mini-usb, power
I have always connected it via firewire 800 or mini-usb as my Macbook Pro only has a firewire 800 port / usb port, and firewire 800 is faster than the other options provided / I assume it provides the most power to the drive thus being the healthiest?
Now for the past while it has only shown up on certain computers. I have a mac G4 tower that it will show up on when I connect via firewire800
But it will not show up on my macbook pro that I normally use it on, and it won't show up in disk utility.
When I connect it to the G4 however it shows up both as a writable drive and in disk utility so I have been able to format it in to various partition styles to coax it in to showing up. It still doesn't show up.
Basically
500gb LaCie Rugged external HDD, ID RUG FWSA
Shows up on G4, both disk utility and writable
Does not show up on macbook pro anywhere
When connected to the macbook pro I can hear it and feel it turning on and staying on.
What have I tried already?
-Reformatting
-connecting it with a power cord attached, which makes me think its not a power issue, but I could be wrong
-connecting it and waiting for ages for the drive to show up in disk utility.
-the problem is not with the cord or 800 port on the hdd as it works on another computer
-the problem is not with the 800 port on my macbook pro as other 800 devices work on my laptop.
Any ideas anybody?

Thanks for the link. I don't think that is the issue though. I have tried formatting the drive in a variety of formats all of which I know are acceptable on my macbook pro, and tried a wide variety of them.
The G4 is older than my macbook pro so it doesnt have any formats that wouldn't be readable by the newer OS.
The drive doesn't even show up in my disk utility on the macbook pro so I can't reformat it from the macbook pro itself. I imagine anything I will have to do to the drive format-wise will have to be run from the disk utility on my G4 tower but can't think of anything else.
Think I should try the mac genius bar for this one. It's too bizarre.

Hard Drive Shows Up In System Profile, But Not On Desktop

I took the old hard drive out of my intel mac mini (60gb fuji) and installed it on my power mac g5 (1.8 single); it worked long enough for me to copy all my old files over before it randomly froze and i had to restart. after that the new drive only shows up in the system profiler and not on the desktop. in the system profiler it states its capacity but not how much is available, like the main drive. any ideas on how to get the old drive working again?

External hard drive shows up in the shell, but not in the Finder

I have an external had drive which, until two days ago, behaved fine. At that time, it began mounting in a way such that it showed up in a shell and was responsive to shell commands, but does not appear in the Finder and does not seem responsive to Mac OS X commands.
Disk Utility says there's nothing wrong with the drive, but mounting and unmounting seem to do nothing to the Finder. Those operations affect things in the shell environment as they intuitively should.
The output of df suggests that the disk is automounted reasonably.

Keynote PDF Export - black text appears white on some computers, but not all - why?

This problem seems to have been going on forever, why is there STILL no solution? I'm really keen to mover over to Keynote, cos Powerpoint is very cumbersonme and frustrating in my experience, but I'll only ever use Keynote to export PDFs for presentations, so if it can't even get this basic function right, there's really no point in abandoning Powerpoint - at least I know my docs will come out fine and won't have to be embarrassed when clients come back to me frustrated cos they can't read the text!

That would because some of the colors you are using are RGB and are being converted to cmyk.
Make a color swatch in the Color specifier and set the ICC profile in the small rainbow square next to the pull down menu in the color sliders tab.
Then use that color swatch in set styles to ensure you have the same color set on all your objects and text.
You should not be using jpegs if you want to ensure an exact color. jpegs are not suitable for flat areas of color.

You can't 'deauthorise some'. What you do is to deauthorise all and then re-authorise the individual machines you want to be authorised.

How do I troubleshoot installation/distribution of a LabVIEW .exe which processes data using Matlab when it works on some computers but not others?

I've been given the unenviable task of troubleshooting and installing/distributing software written by a former co-worker. I've modified the LabVIEW code and built an .exe file. I've successfully installed the Labview .exe file on several computers, but it won't work on some others. What's more baffling is that I installed it successfully on one computer, uninstalled it, and tried reinstalling it with no success. In fact, it's a new error (Dr. Watson for Windows NT application error). It doesn't help that I have different versions of LabVIEW and Matlab on the target computers. Some have LabVIEW 5.1, some
have 5.0, and some don't have it at all. Some have Matlab 5.2, some have 5.3 (R11) and some have 6.0 (R12). It's also not clear to me where the Matlab m files should be located. I'm not sure if it's a LabVIEW Runtime Engine problem, or if it's a Matlab problem. I've also wondered how LabVIEW and Matlab talk to each other. When LabVIEW calls Matlab, it seems that Matlab is running in the background. In other words, clicking on the Matlab Command Window and typing "whos" or any other command/variable doesn't work.

Migrate SOME apps but not all?

Is it possible to use migration assist to migrate SOME Apps but not all of them? If so, how?

No. Migration Assistant will transfer the entire folder but you cannot selectively transfer individual applications. However, you can simply copy items from the Applications folder to the other computer via Target Disk Mode without the use of MA. Although this will work just fine it will not automatically include any other associated files needed by the applications transferred such as Applications Support files, preference files, or other installed files. Therefore, it would be better to simply reinstall the individual applications or transfer all of them, then delete what you don't want.

How do I delete Photo Stream photos that are taking up hard drive space in my Masters folder, but not actually appearing in any event, or on the interface at all?

A couple months ago, I activated photo stream using my apple ID. I was under the impression that all the photos uploaded to my photo stream would only use server space on icloud and wouldn't actually utilize disk space, or at the most, the option was available to only download specific photos to my hard drive. My hope was that I could upload the photos to a specific drive, and view the uploaded thumbs or low-res comps on any device as a reference.
This is not the case.
What I have found is that iphoto has been automatically downloading any and all photos uploaded to my photo stream. Not just the thumbnails, the entire thumbnail + all resolutions. I shoot RAW photos so in my case, the original averages about 15-25MB per photo.
I have been uploading directly to an iphoto library on an external hard drive specifically designated for handling all my RAW high-res images.
What has been happening is all those RAW files are also being uploaded directly to my iphoto library on my iMac and eating up memory which I cannot reclaim, even after deactivating my Photo Stream in preferences. We're talking almost 100 GB of memory is tied up right now.
I don't want to just go in and start deleting files and folders in my Masters folder, since I have heard this will break iphoto, but the photos in my photostream do not show up in any event and I need to reclaim the hard drive space.
How can I safely delete them?

If the files are loose inside the iPhoto library package here's one way to get them out:
1 - open your library, select all of the photos in the library and add a unique keyword, XXXX, to all of them.
2 - Rebuild the library with iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 - select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
3 - open the library, create a smart album with the criterial "Keyword is not XXXX".
4 - the smart album will include those photos that were not visible in your original library. Select them and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move them to the iPhoto Trash bin.
5 - empty the iPhoto Trash bin via the iPhoto ➙ Empty iPhoto Trash Bin menu option.
6 - empty the Trash bin in the Dock to remove the files from your hard drive completely.
Be sure to read Note 1 above. You can use the new library without your books, slideshow, etc. and it will not contain those errant files. Of course delete the original library if the new one is satisfactory.

To what did your camera record those photos and videos - camera's internal memory, inserted memory card, other?
Any remote chance that the latter may still exist for you to use to download the camera files to your new external hard drive?

How do I delete some history but not all without it crashing?

I remember that Firefox used to allow deleting of only some history but not the most recent. For example, I was able to go into Options and under the Privacy tab, I could choose for Firefox to remember the last 7 days, 30 days, etc. Now, it seems that I can only choose "Remember history", "Do not remember history", and the custom option does not allow me to choose how long I want Firefox to remember the history while deleting everything else.
When I press Ctrl-H to open up the history on the side, it shows all the history from a very long time. I remember I used to be able to right-click on a folder (say several months back) and delete it all. Now if I try to do the same thing, it takes a long time and essentially crashed.
I do not know why these features were removed but Firefox is very difficult to use as a result of that now. Could you please help me out with this?

If you have problem with deleting the history in the Library then you can delete the places.sqlite file in the Firefox profile folder.<br />
Note that this will remove all history (you can copy/paste or drag history items to a bookmarks folder).
Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

Current Firefox versions do not have a time limit for the history.
Firefox determines automatically how many pages can be kept without affecting the performance.
You can see the current value via the read-only pref places.history.expiration.transient_current_max_pages on the about:config page.

Transferring some apps, but not all to new iPad

Hello, I am just about to take possession of a new iPad air. I want to transfer some apps to this iPad but not all of them, is this possible, and how do I do this please. I want my grandchildren to be able use the old iPad to play their games I have already downloaded and/or paid for but do not want them on my new iPad? Thank you.

Use these instructions to download apps you've previously purchased on your iPad Air:

Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
Tap Updates.
Tap Purchased on the resulting screen.
Locate the app in your Purchased tab.

My LaCie hard drive keeps saying it was disconnected but it was not.

I have a MacBook 13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008. But since it has a small hard drive (which I am replacing soon to a 1 TB internal hard drive) I use an external hard drive as well. It's a LaCie 300 GB external (I bought it years ago). I keep it always connected to my MacBook unless I move it from my desk to work at the couch etc. However, lately every time I power up my machine it says that "The disk was not ejected properly..." However, it was never taken out of the port. I only have 2 USB ports on my MacBook so I use a "Flexible USB 4 Port Hub with Splitter Cable" that I bought on Amazon.
Whether I have the cord from the external hard drive in a port by itself or whether it's going in through this port hub splitter it still gives me the same error. I have many priceless (to me) files on this hard drive and I'm worried that I'm going to have data loss. Can anyone tell me if I should be concerned? Also what should I do? I am (not so patiently) awaiting a new Western Digital 1 TB SATA II 5400 RPM 8 MB Cache 2.5 inch bulk/OEM notebook hard drive. However, with my schedule I don't know when or how long it will take to replace. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If the LaCie enclosure can be opened, you can always get a new enclosure and place the drive in it. Chances are there is nothing wrong with the drive.
My LaCie two big triple has two slots and each drive can be replaced or removed. The enclosure originally came with two Seagate drives which failed after one year and now I have WD drives in it.
I would never recommend LaCie drives after owning this one.
Also, the reason that I am able to continue using this LaCie drive in my black MB is that the MB does not sleep drives when the computer sleeps as my 2010 MB does. Upon waking the 2010 MB, I would get the message you are getting.

Imac hard drive shows up in disc utility but repair greyed o

my imac will not start up without discs, and when it does and i try to use disc utility the drive shows up and i can select it but the repair and verify buttons are greyed out. same thing happens when i start it up in target mode. i did do nvram reset as well as power management reset.
I have a genius bar appt for saturday but as it is an hour a way i'd like to try and solve myself.

Ok select the drive model itself not the volume and check the information at the bottom to see if the SMART Status is Verified or not. Your external HD is formatted with the NTFS file system. OS X can read but not write to the NTFS file system.
To be compatible with OS X and Windows it would need to be formatted with the FAT32 file system.
Alternately you can install a 3rd party driver to give OS X the ability to write to the NTFS file system. One of them is
