  • I can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name

can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name. My original external has an error and needs to be reformatted but I dont want to lose this informations its my entire Itunes library.

Sounds like the source drive is formatted as case sensitive and the destination drive is not. The preferred format for OS X is case insensitive unless there is a compelling reason to go case sensitive.
Why can't you change the filename? Is it because the source drive is having problems?  If so is this happening with only one or two or a few files? If so the best thing would be to copy those over individually and then rename them on the destination drive.
If it is more then you can do manually and you can't change the name on the source you will have to reformat the destination as case sensitive.

  • How do I get my lap top to shut down when I close the lid?

I have tried to switch on the function that shuts down my lap top when I close the lid but am either dumb or lazy and gave up too quickly.... any help would be greatly apprecated.

    Thanks Poikkeus
My mac goes to sleep when I close the lid pretty quickly but when I open up the lid it opens up again where I left off.
Some nice person burgled me some time ago and stole my mac so I want to force my mac to close right down so when someone else opens up they are forced to open up in guest.  I can then track my mac without risking them accessing my personal details etc.

  • Lost ability to simply shut down Safari. have no Apple icon or red "X" to hit.

Lost ability to simply shut down Safari. Have no Apple icon or red "X" at top of toolbar.
Must manually shut down when finished.
There must be a way to return to normal.
    Thanks for your help.

    Quit Safari.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist and drag that file to the Desktop.
    Launch Safari and test.
You don't mean the Apple icon on your toobar, not in Safari, or do you?

  • I have 4 mail icons on my desktop and cannot open any of them.  I have no idea how I have done this but want to go back to having one mail icon which opens.  What have I done and what should I do?

I am new to mac pro and have managed to set up 4 mail icons on my desk top and none of them open mail.  What have I done and how do I get back to having just one in the doc which opens?

HA! It turns out, that an app that I've never used before, became active during a time that I was multitasking and didn't realize it. I didn't notice the effects right away, because my main desktop has a special 3D desktop generator called, bumptop, which covers over any other desktop color or graphic in that area. So it wasn't until I swiped to go to a different desktop, that I noticed the random slideshow being displayed. All fixed now. What a relief.

  • I have a mac book pro running OS 10.5.8 and firefox has always been fine but for the last two days it is slow to open and run and wont shut down, I have to force quit. Is there a current problem?

I have to force quit because my mac says "Firefox not responding" this happens on both my work network and home (cable) network.

My best guess would be that the version of Safari you're using is outdated and unsupported by Outlook.com/Hotmail.com. Since you're still running Leopard (OS X 10.5), the best solution is to try Chrome 22 or Firefox 16 (the latest versions supported by Leopard).
Otherwise, I would upgrade to at least Snow Leopard (10.6) then you can run the newest versions of both Firefox and Chrome. You can get the upgrade for free from Apple if you call their customer support.
I have the same model of Macbook and am running the newest version of OS X, Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8), without a problem. Then you would be able to run the latest version of Safari as well (version 6).
EDIT: Here are links to older versions of Chrome and Firefox.

My iphone4 suddenly shut down.I pluged into a charger it started vibration and got heat up in off mood. I also checked it to genius he said that its battery is ok but problem is some thing else. It is still in off mod. what i have to do?

I  am having a similar odd issue. First of all this summer i took my iphone 4 to apple because my screen had quit. I could hear calls and texts coming thru but screen was unresponsive. I was a month out of warranty so the nice fella at apple gave me a 30 day warranty, then replaced my handset with a refurb. Saturday night at dinner i was on my phine and it died. I plugged it in thinking nothing of it and went to bed. When i wooe up after the charger had been on all night all i had was the black screen with the battery (red) and lightning bolt, meaning it knew it plugged in but still did nothing. So off to apple i go. They said i was out of warranty and the problem (never said what problem) would cost 170 bucks to fix. So i went and upgraded to the iphone 5 ( figured if i'm spending that anyways may as well be on a new phone). When I got home i tinkered with the old one with all the online suggestions i could find. (Cleaning ports, hard reset, putting into recovery mode, and checking indicators for water damage which there was none). Still only saw the battery symbol. I left it alone figuring i can sell off cheap and someone else can repair. Last night for kicks i plugged it in again and it came to life! It is in recovery mode (needs to be hooked to itunes to regain functionality) but showed 100% battery charge. I went to show my bf and realized an issue. If its not plugged into the wall adaptor, it wont turn on. I figured then that if i can get it plugged in and pull it up on itunes maybe it would be fine. When plugged into the computer it wont hold enough power. It thrns on shows the apple for 30 seconds, shuts off. My ending conclusion on my own is that it needs a new battery in order to be revived. Anyone think this sounds like a reasonable conclusion? Or will i be wasting money? If i can get it restored to functional, cheaply i can give to my bf (his pos lg phone is almost toast) or sell it.

  • ITunes wont shut down

Sometimes, especially after a long session using my iTunes, it continues to function but wont shut-down when I try to close it. The only way to close it is to initiate the task manager and shut it down via override.
Is there a fix needed for this problem?
Does it signify a more serious problem?

i have the same problem and it is really annoying. i want apple to fix it but i have delt with it for almost two years now.

  • Netbook NB305 Wont shut down.

I have had my net book for about 2 weeks and it now will not shut down. I can put it to sleep or hibernation but it wont shut down or restart. Cntl/alt/del wont work either, so I dont seem to be able to shut it down, either with or without the ac cord attached. I have run a virus check and there is nothing wrong.

    Hi
What happens if you go to start -> shutdown? Do you get any error messages?
Maybe there are some different processes running in the OS background which prevents the OS from shutdown.
I would go to msconfig and would check the startup tab.
There you can find some apps which would be loaded while booting up the unit
Maybe its just a OS issue
The other solution proposal; try a system reinstallation. Maybe this is a option for you

  • Finder wont shut down

Talk about good software. Leopard is so good it wont shut down. literally. I have a new intel Mac5 about a year old.
I have to press the power button to shut down every time. I have archived and install over 3 times now. Shut down all my third party stuff. Have the latest update.
I've heard that it doesn't hurt the computer to shut it down manually with the power button until I can come up with a fix.
any suggestion would be "greatly" appreciated.
i will wash your dishes for 4 years every other weekend (twice) when the eclipse of the moon is seen by 56% of the human population under 13. thanks

Shutting down with the Power button is definitely not safe, it could cause damage to your hard drive. This may be why you've had to Archive and Install three times.
The most common cause of shut down problems is an application or process that refuses to quit. There can be many causes for that such as an incompatible application, a runaway process, cache or preference file corruption, log file corruption. Even an incompatible peripheral could be the cause.
I'd suggest doing a couple of things. First, try booting into safe mode and see if you are able to shut down normally. Second, create a new user account. Log out of your account and into the new one. See if you can shut down normally.
Repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Perform some maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, and backup and restore.

  • Ipad wont shut down properly

what do i do if ipad wont shut down properly? just keeps spinning

Well I just got home so it has not been spinning for about three hours.
I have tried to force quit it to no avail.
I think I will have to make an appointment with Apple to see just what is going on since I don't know anything else to try.  I guess when I wake up in the morning the battery will be all used up.
I thought that maybe if I connected to my computer it might kick it into a working mode but that did not happen.  i only got an error message (OxE8000065). whatever that means.
    Any other ideas?
Thanks for all of your help.

  • N8 Maps wont shut down

Hi. i have N8 with latest updates (Anna, update v025.007). Today I installed Maps v3.08 (105).
I use Appstop-application to cotroll what apps I'm running. I noticed that after I start Maps once it wont shut down. Even the program seems to shuot down there is still process called "Nokia Kartat" (Nokia Maps in Finnish) running. If I shut it down manually it will start again immediatelly.
Powering the phone will kill it, until Maps is used next time. This is quite annoying and battery consuming, and I would really appreciate if there was some solution.

Same problem with my N8.  Please this thread for other users experiencing this as well:
    /t5/Nseries-and-Symbian-Smartphones/Nokia-N8-Software-Update-Nokia-Maps-with-enhanced/m-p/1209947#M2...
I am using a free app called Mobile Guard by NetQin.  With Mobile Guard, I can indeed close the Maps application and associated processes and they will stay closed until I use the Maps again.
    http://www.netqin.com/en/guard/symbian/
This is just  a workaround however.  Nokia should realize that leaving these processes always running consumes precious RAM and battery life and come up with an update fix..
