My laptop fan speed is always going so high...

Hello there.
My laptop fan speed is always running so loud most of the time when I don't even have many programs running. How can I control the fan speed?

Yes, you can:

However, I'd look at the root cause also. See what processes are running and see if any are hogging the processor

can anyone please help me, this is really getting annoying because the fan speed is always on 90%, i checked the health monitor and the temperature was 39C. It is not even hot, the fan is blowing cold air and when i touch the area its not hot. Something is wrong with my laptop, i turned it on yesterday and the fan never stopped. It's really and it still keeps on going and constantly on 90% fan speed.

Edit your post again, and remove your serial number. That is not something you should post on this public forum. This is a peer support form, NOT a offical Toshiba Tech Support site. We're all just other users & Toshiba owners.
Yours is a Toshiba Australia model. Unfortunately, they way Toshiba Australia & Europe both do their BIOS updates, I can't see what the various update fixes are. So, click on the 'Start' button, type   sys   , click on 'System Information', look on the right side for 'BIOS Version/Date'. If you don't have version 2.40, download this file to your desktop, then restart your computer, after a fresh restart double click on this file to begin the installation, follow the directions carefully.

  • T420 fan speed

    Hi there
My T420 with i5 2540M and integrated graphics shows following fan behavior:
    - No load 3300rpm with CPU temp <55 C
    - Max load 3600rpm with CPU temp ~85C (due to CPU throttling, I assume)
Is this a normal behavior observed on other T420 as well? I now reverted to tpfancontrol which stops the fan in idle mode at 52 C and gradually increases it up to 5000rpm for max load.
This works for me, but I would be happy if it worked in BIOS mode as well. Anybody with suggestions or the same problems? Thanks in advance!

Under 15% load, CPU is clocked to ~800MHz and fan is at 3544 RPM as reported by speedfan. Temperature is 42 C. Fan is inaudible.
Running graphics intensive program on iGPU, CPU bounces between 800MHz and 2.5GHz. CPU load is reported as under 20%. CPU temp climbs until it eventually reaches 97C it then seems to throttle, but seems to try to stay around 85. Fan was running at 4,527RPM The processor and dGPU share the heatsink and the dGPU shows a temp of 83C under 0% load at this time. nVidia GPU Activity Icon reports no programs are using dGPU.
Running a single threaded high CPU program, with nothing graphics intensive temperature  will go up to 97C, CPU clocks up to 3.2GHZ and stays around 3.1 to 3.2GHz at all times. Fan speed reported as 4510RPM in BIOS mode. Fan speed goes up to 6487 with speedfan. Turbo Boost Plus allows the fan to go tup 54544RPM.
High GPU program on dGPU (NVS 4200M), CPU reports load of under 30%. Processor speed bounces from 2.5GHz to 800MHz. GPU temperature approaches 99C and processor temperature never exceeds 92C. Fan speed reported as 4527.
High GPU (igpu) plus High CPU, CPU load of up to 75%. CPU speeds around 2.5GHz with minimal throttling as low as 1.6GHz. GPU temperature approaches 99C. Fan 4510 RPM.
I'm interested in finding out why your CPU temp never gets over 85C.

  • Corecenter pro fan speeds

I'm running corecenter pro as MSI told me PC Alert wasn't supported on the Master 2 FAR. I noticed that the CPU1,2 and System fan speeds are ALWAYS 0. When I'm booting and go into the BIOS it tells me the fans are running and they are usually around 1200 rpms, yet Corecenter always reports fan speed as 0.
Is this a known bug in Corecenter?

After a bunch of late night reading, I see it's related to whether or not you let the BIOS manage the temperature or not.
Still a secondary question is why is setting the system fan speed not available to me in the bios? I have a smart fan plugged in and the bios even shows what speed the fan is running at, I just don't seem to have the option to adjust it for temperature and tolerance within the bios area.

  • How to control fan speed on Satellite A660-11M?

please any body know how to control fan speed its always 69% and make bad noise and the cpu usage is 3% no at high processing i try advanced power settings but still runing at high speed

    > I hope u didnt expect that they were gonna stay at 0% like forever
Of course I dont expect this. When you switch on the notebook CPU reach high temperature in few seconds only and you must not wonder if pretty high CPU temperature and fan activity will be shown very soon.
I dont know what do you expect but it is logic that cooling fan will run. Maybe all time maybe will be cut off for short period of time but it will run permanently. I dont see any problem there. With cooling method option it can be reduced a little bit.
And what is your question? I didnt understand what you want to know exactly.

  • CPU fan speed - is 6000 rpm at 41C normal?

I have asked about this before - haven't found a solution yet - -- just want to know how fast a bog-standard retail fan for the 3800+ should be going ...mine hit about 6200 rpm a short while ago when the CPU temp was 41 C, and sounded (as someone else describes it "like a Dyson") ... it is now at 36 C and has just dropped below 5000 rpm ... I can hear myself think now ... I have Speedfan but haven't a clue as how to get it to "control" the fan speed - 6000 rpm seems somewhat high for 41 C!!
If I would be better using a different CPU cooling solution ... what "fan" would anyone recommend? ... with a price limit of around £20 ....
    JLP

Keep in mind that each CPU will operate at different temps depending on which core you have, the Ambient temp and the case temp as well as what your using as cooling and what case fans you have. Just because one person gets a good temp does not mean you will get the same.
For instance a computer in a hot room will end up with ahigher temp than one in an airconditiooned room. A Computer with dual 120mm case fans can usually be cooler than one with 2 80mm fans and so on.
Also note that it can depend on how you use your computer as the heavier the loads the more heat will build. Bigger Vid cards in the system will produce more heat than a small and cool vid card. So it stands to reason that the componants also play a part.
Cool and Quiet will also be a factor as it is meant to keep the CPU slow and cool when there is only small loads on the system.

  • CPU Fan speed constantly running at 5000-5500rpms!

I have Cool-N-Quiet enabled in BIOS, AMD64 driver loaded and Power Management set to Minimal.
I know the Cool-n-Quiet is working because when I load CoreCenter it shows the CPU speed at 801Mhz.
However, my CPU Fan speed is always around 5000-5500rpms! My CPU temp is normally around 42C.
I can lower the fan speed manually to 2000rpm or so but as soon as I turn Cool-n-Quiet back on the fan speed jumps to 5000-5500.
Anyone know what could be causing this and how to fix it?

  • GT72 Domminator PRO Fan speed???

Hi guys ive had my dominator pro for about 1 month now and ive recently changed house now I don't know if im being paranoid but the gt72 CPU Fan speed seems to be running higher than usual constantly
the temperature while typing this 35-36 and CPU only 30 I would show you current fan speed but im not sure where I can view this im just wondering should my gt72 be almost silent??? which I think before it was its worrying me a lot and just would like some information
    thanks all

Check the fan speed in Dragon Gaming Center.
Are you running NVIDIA graphics(GPU mode) or the Intel graphics?
*check the GPU light, it'll light on when running NVIDIA graphics.

  • Yoga 2 13 - Fan speed goes almost silent in tablet mode

I find that the fan generates too much noise on my Yoga 2 13 (not pro), even when the laptop is completely idle.
It seems that somehow the temperature threshold for triggering the fan is set a bit too low (same problem seen on the lenovo yoga first version)
However, I noticed that when I fold my Yoga into tablet mode the fan goes almost silent (which is awesome).
Am I the only one experiencing this issue ?
Is there maybe a way to set the fan speed in laptop, tent and stand mode at the same speed as in tablet mode ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Mat.

I was going to reccomend you use the Notebook fan control program, and I went to go find you a link for it.  However, when searching for it, I discovered that the Notebook fan control program doesn't work for the yoga 2 13 although it does work for my yoga 13.  It seems to be because the yoga 2 13 only has one fan while the yoga 13 has two fans.  I'm not sure.
The best bet for you is to search around on forums to see if anyone has discovered a different program that works.  I tried searching around but I couldn't find anything.

  • Portege M400 freezes, screen goes black and fan speed increase when moved

    Can someone please help me?
I recently received the Portege M400 from a friend 4 days ago and reformatted to Windows XP Tablet edition.
All was going well until I wanted to move the laptop to my coffee table, but as soon as I move the laptop it freezes, the screen goes black and the fan speed increases dramatically!,
So far I have had no success in fixing this problem and I much appreciated is some one could help me!

    Hi there,
I have the same laptop. Bought it from a friend also! That was a year ago. It was working perfectly till 6 months ago when I had it going 100% like yours. Screen freezes, fan speeds up and hangs up once it is moved. Recently, even if it doesnt move it hangs up also. I have tried many things like reinstalling drivers and Windows.....etc.
I dont think it is Windows problem or drivers problem, because if you run BIOS and try to move the laptop, it also hangs up!!
Tried updating the BIOS, also no benefit. I ended up opening the laptop and having a look to the motherboard (thinking that I could see something that I could fix!! But again, did not get any results.
I tried also disconnecting peripherals one by one to see whether I could spot the problem, I disconnected the battery, the hard disk, the optical drive, the wirelss modem (from inside), memory, and even the bluetooth, but could not spot the culprit.
I believe now that the problem is basically the motherboard (sort of wear and tear insulation problem) and it is beyond my humble expertise.
I am sure if I would contact TOSHIBA, they would not be of much benefit as I am a second hand user. And if I try to buy from them a main board, they will charge me hell of money.
I hope that this is helpful for you to avoid you wasting your time like me.
Please if you would come into any progress, let me know. Likewise, I would be happy to update you.

I suspect you have hardware problem with a fan sensor. Doing a software install will not help the machine needs to be taken in for service. If you run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode it should reveal the error code. If it does not then run AHT an additional 2-3 times to be sure in Extended Mode. Each pass will take about 30-60 minutes.

  • Laptop Fan not increasing speed

I was having very bad heating problems with my pc it would tend to go off all the tkme when it overheated, i decided to blow into the fan and dust came out. It continued to work perfectly untill last night when it continued to overheat, I checked on the Internet and I found I just had to clean the fan so I opened up my laptop this morning and cleaned the fan. But now the fan will not speed up if the temperature is high before it would and make horrible noises, now the fan is on but does not changes its speed when the cpu is heating!I have tried alot of freeware that increases the fan speed but the fan cannot be detected, but the fan is still on and idle. I opened up the laptop 3 times to check if everything was connected and they are but what could be the issue?? Please help my laptop is my life at the moment.

It should be constantly turning not idling...and only speed up when the Laptop tells it to speed up to dissipate the heat from the heat sink as heat rises. If it isn't doing this then the fan is failing.

  • CPU Fan Speed always LOW? -- K8N NEO4 Platinum SLI

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. My CPU fan speed is consistently around 850 RPM, both at idle and under full load. This is shown in the BIOS, with Corecenter, Everest, and Speedfan. I have Cool n Quiet disabled in the BIOS, CPU Fan Target in BIOS set to 40 deg (have had it at 60 as well), and Windows Power Scheme set to Minimal Power Management. I've even tried enabling Cool n Quiet to see if it actually did anything...but fan speed is still the same.
It seems everyone else has CPU fan speeds in the thousands rpms. Mine never changes, is always around 850.
My CPU temps vary between 37C idle and 48 load when my ambient room temps are around 75 deg.
What's up with my CPU fan?
EDIT: Speedfan doesn't seem to work for adjusting anything. It only shows my CPU (fan2) and NB (fan3) fan speed, but adjusting the percentages has no effect.

Try setting cpu fan speed to max to access this open corecentre & click on logo.
    should give:-
Select user mode & set Fan to max. This info is held in the corecentre chip & is the only way to access it .
Only keep corecentre installed for this function

  • K8N Neo4 Setup - Issues Adjusting CPU Fan Speed - Alarm Going Off

    Building this PC for a friend, and I just got it to post.  Everything seems to be running stable, only when I get into the CoreCenter, the CPU Fan alarm is going off and the speed is flashing red.  It is currently running at about 820 RPM, but the CPU temp is sitting at 37'C and the sys temp is 32'C.  Is this too hot, is the fan speed way too low, I'm somewhat new to this.  I set it to Cool'n'Quiet and it still does it, I disable Cool'n'Quiet and try to increase CPU fan speed manually, and it won't increase.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  The rig is setup as follows;
    MSI K8N Neo4
    AMD 64 3000+
    Kingston 512MB DDR400
    80GB Seagate ATA
    nVidia GeForce 6600GT 128MB
    Antec NeoPower 480W

You can adjust the alarm level by clicking the little red arrow(Hardware monitor option) on the right side of Core Center, move the slider for CPU Fan Speed Alarm to the left(set it to 500-600rpm), and click OK.
Now you shouldn't get alarms any more.
The fan speed and temperatures you report are very similar to what I see on my system at idle. The fan shold begin to run faster if the system is under load for some time.
