My laptop heats up and shuts down

I bought my laptop in US and am using the same adapter. Maybe this is the reason, but I'm seriosly worried as my laptop after an hour of use becomes very hot and shuts down. I don't know what the problem really is, but lately, it seems to shut down even quickly.
I thought the fans might not be working, but they were when I looked at them. It's happened from the brand new, and I've used it like that for six months now. But since the problem's become worst, I thought of asking for help here. Is there anything I can do?
Thank you.

HI Shalav,
Your notebook will most likely be using a 'universal' mains adapter so it will work perfectly well in the UK as well as the US.
Your problem is most likely to be a build up of dust in the CPU heat-sink which will reduce its effectiveness to the point where the build up of heat causes the thermal protection circuitry to opertae and shut off power.
Clean out any accumulation of dust and also make sure that there is sufficient air able to circulate through the cooling system. Leave plenty of spoace around and under your notebook.

  • NC6230 heats up and shuts down quickly

If anyone can please help so I dont spend anymore money on this.LOL  I have a NC6230 that would overheat and shut down after half a minute of so.  I went on EBAY and purchased two other boards and I have the same issue.  Thinking I couldn't have 2 bad boards with the save issue I purchased a curcuit board.  Same issue.  I tried another known good processor with the same results.  I tried swapping memory with no success.  All of these tests were done with the power supply for power and no hard drive or OS.  I then powered it on with the battery only and it stayed running.  I powered it off and restarted with a external keyboard to check the BIOS and it overheated and shut off in 30 seconds.  No clue what else to try.  Is there a defect in the board which provides too much power to the board causing the shutdown?  Is this a defect in this board over time?
    Thanks for any help

Could be that the coolant is not working correctly.
A typical heat pipe consists of a sealed pipe or tube made of a material with high thermal conductivity such as copper or aluminium at both hot and cold ends. A vacuum pump is used to remove all air from the empty heat pipe, and then the pipe is filled with a fraction of a percent by volume of working fluid (or coolant) chosen to match the operating temperature. Examples of such fluids include water, ethanol, acetone, sodium, or mercury.

  • Heats up and shuts down

Found my I book with the fan on and very hot. I left it in the sleep mode as always witht the power cord on. I had to reboot after trying to turn the power on with the switch, tried several times before it would respond. Time to send it back for service?? This has happened twice now in the past 4 days

You may want to determine if you are doing many processor intensive tasks with your iBook. If you are, you may want to not do them all at the same time, this would put quite a burden on your G4 Processor and ultimately the fan. Furthermore, make sure your fan/ventilation system is running smoothly. Ensure that there is not an extremely large accumulation of dust on the side and back fan grilles. (The side one is located to the right of the ports just beside the left palmrest and the back one is tucked away under the screen hinge.) If there is a lot of dust, try vacuuming it out but PLEASE follow safety instructions as to not damage your computer electrostatically. I can not be held responsible for you damaging your iBook G4 with a vacuum cleaner as an attempt to remove dust collection. All I can say is to remove your battery and unplug all mice, keyboards, iPods, power cords, digital cameras, etc. and MAKE SURE THE SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND NOT JUST SLEEPING then put the end of a vacuum cleaner up to the grilles and vacuum out the dust.
Hope this clears up your issue and your ventilation system which may be responsible for excessive fan usage. I'm not sure whether you should take your iBook to an apple store or reseller for service. You may want to see if the problem persists after these treatments. Good Luck as always and thank you for choosing Apple.

  • Need help? My laptop overheats and shuts down when up loading

I installed Premier Elements 8 on Vista and finished my first video and when I try to upload through the share option to youtube Before 1/2 way my laptop overheats and shuts down. I have tried several times. I tried pluging laptop directly in to network so I was not uploading wireless. No luck. I also tried turning my screen down so it would make less heat. I dont know what else to try.

What is happening is that the CPU and the HDD's are being stressed more than with most other operations. This is common and can be observed in places like Speedfan and Task Manager. There are a lot of files being written to, and read from. This is especially hard, if one only has a single internal HDD, as it must do so very much, and is being asked to do it all at the same time.
In general, editing Video is about the toughest task that one can ask of a computer. The Export phase is about as tough as editing gets. If one is editing AVCHD footage, the CPU usage goes up even higher and almost exponentially!
What you observe is not a fault of the software, but just how all NLE software must work.
Unfortunately, most laptops are not properly equiped with adequate cooling to begin with. They also usually have a single HDD. That was why I went with an extreme "gaming" laptop to start, and then modified it for NLE work. It works fine, but I had to add the cooling pad, and Speedfan.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Laptop won't go to sleep mode and shut down properly.

hello,           My name is Atul and i upgraded my laptop hp pavilion 15-p017tu from win 8.1 to win 10 on 29h july. My laptop was working great before the upgrade and before upgrading i updraded ( updated ) all the drivers and windows too.          so, after the upgrade i have been facing the same problem which has been shared by many peple here..i.e win doesn't go to sleep mode. In my case when ever i put the sys to sleep mode, the screen turns off but the power button doesn't blinks and i can't go back to the normal mode by using mouse curser or pressing the power button back. I have to physically shut down the system by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.         Also, my system won't shut down properly and it is the same as the sleep mode probem. I have contacted the customer care of microsoft and hp both and they did some setting changes but the problem keeps coming back. I have also told by the hp care that they will take atleast a month or two to fix this as this may be due to hardware not supporting the current driver so this might take time. They also told me to just downgrade to win 8.1 and after sometime when this poblem is fixed i can again install and upgrade win 10. If any of you guys know how to fix this problem do share it here.      thanks!!

  • Has anyone else had any problems with their phone over heating and shutting down?

I've had my phone for less a month and I've already had issues with my iphone 4. On several occassions it has overheated and shut down. On one occasion I put the phone in the side pocket of my purse where, I also had a charger for my camera. When I removed the phone, it was hot...not warm but hot! On another occasion I was at the movies and put the phone face down on my lap, at one point i touched the phone and again it was hot. When the movie was over, and I looked at the phone it had shut down....this has happened a few  times more since then. I've also had problems with the phone shutting down on it's own. I took it to my local apple store and the representative looked at my phone and ran a diagnostic check for me. He said the everything on my phone looked normal and that my phone probably needs a "breaking in" period...to give it a couple of months...He really didn't tell me much more...I don't use my phone for more than the basics...calling, texting, and some mild app use...I don't understand how I can be having these problems when I've had my phone for less than a month...The rep tried selling my the Apple insurance. He told me that through ATT I only have 30 days, and I would be better off getting this insurance. I feel very dissastisfied with the service I got. I was done with my appointment within 10 mins, I don't think the representative took the time to listen to my concerns.

Thanks for your reply, but I guess whether this was a silly question is a matter of opinion. That is the whole purpose having these forums...so that people can post their questions, silly or not. Maybe you are an Apple expert or have "techy" knowledge, but I don't. So what may be silly or stupid for you, can be completely different for a novice apple consumer like me. If you must know, I did do my research, and I did do the basic trouble shooting. All to no avail. I took my phone to the apple store, had it diagnosed and was told some very inaccurate information. I ended up going back today, and got a second opinion. This person actually took the time to talk to me and to better explain Applecare and my warranty. She also told me that there is no such thing as a "break in" period, and when there is a shutting down issue, even after a "restore" that it was better to get it replaced. Which is what she did. She replaced my phone. Obviously, the first person, by his own admission, was too tired and ready to go home to actually take the time to explain and offer other options...

  • Recent freezing and shutting down every down 10-15 minutes and hard to log in to internet very slow

My son has 2009 Macbook white version and recently (last week or so) freezing all the time, cannot log on to internet, and shuts down every 10-15 minutes. Is there a download (free hopefully to clean it up for any spyware or maleware). He is a student and very busy in University and cannot be without the computer?

He will need something to back up onto like an external hard drive. The disks are necessary if the hard drive needs to be repaired, you can't repair the boot volume so you need to start up from an install disc and run Disk Utility from there. When you talk to him have him resettle SMC and pram, sometimes unexpected shutdowns can be corrected that way. The freezing is another issue, I'm concerned with the health of his hard drive. Another thing to ask when you talk to him is how much total space and how much free space does his hard drive have?
    To reset the SMC
    MacBook and MacBook Pro
Laptops with a battery you can remove
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Newer Mac portables with a battery you don't remove
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

My fiancee has a laptop that overheats once in a while and shuts down. She says when she turns it back on, it gives an error saying "There's a thermal temperature of 90". Anyone have any idea how to resolve this? She says it doesn't happen when she's running alot of things, it just seems to happen sometimes. I have yet to see it happen or the error message.

Thank you. I will see if this works.

    Hi there DerVogel ,
Sounds like a Heat related issue ????????
Whenever it shutdown automatically does it turn on right away ? One symptom of a heat related issue is, it takes about several minutes before you can turn it back on again.
Here is how you can isolate the issue since it could also be a software related problem.
    1) Turn on the system Tap F2 and boot on the system setup screen ( BIOS )
    2) Just stay on the Bios , If it doest shutdown on the bios then you might need to reinstall windows. or check if system is infected with spyware or a virus.
But if it does the same thing then the best thing to so is to bring it to a Repair Center or Call Tech support for a depot service repair.
Cheers ! hope this will help.

  • Iphone overheats and shuts down when charging ?

    hello,
since i have had my iphone 4s replace in april my iphone overheats and shuts down when charging?
    can anyone help?

My 4S has recently shut down twice so far due to heat: Once in 100+ deg. in Arizona, when I left the phone in direct sunlight too long (that'll kill anything), and once just today, 96 deg. in Colorado, with the phone in my shirt chest pocket, not in direct sunlight. Each time, the phone was also encased in the hermetically sealed "Lifeproof" case, which probably contributed to heat build-up. If you're using a similar case with yours, either make sure to keep the phone in a cooler, shaded area, or just take it out of the case when the temps are this high. Definitely don't leave it in direct sunlight! In my case, although the 4S seems more heat-sensitive than my previous iPhones, I still find this behavior within acceptable parameters. But I wonder whether the overheating episodes might cause permanent damage...?

  • My 2012, 17" macbook pro starts, gray screen and shuts down.

Anybody knows why my 2012, 17" macbook pro is starting with gray screen and mac logo and shuts down after?
I have Mavrick on. Last night i tried to use itunes and got an error for the first time. It said " itunes was corrupted or not installed correctly" . There is no reason because i listened to music just day before. After working on some docs i shut down the laptop. This morning when i tried to start up it didnt happened. Tried all shortcuts to do recorvery. It said " mac HD and Recorvery HD" both are blocked and not accessible.
Ran another doagnoses, checked hard drive and got errors.
I cant see why hard drive might be damaged.
Plz help me out. I didnt do any backup and dont ant to reformat it.
    Thanks
    -Soleil

Well, i tried different things. First tried Recorvery start. It showed mac HD and Recovery HD but i couldnt choose any, said it was locked.
When i diagnosed the hard drive, dont remember exactly but it ran the HD test and on red showed Hard Drive damaged.
Tonight after putting this questions here i tried again Online Help option, i could see all my folders, files, applications but couldnt open any. It was using Safari.
Not sure whats going on. All started with getting slow and i didnt turn the laptop off "was on sleep" for few days till last night.
Like i said before, last night i couldnt start iTunes, but didnt pay attention to it and shut off laptop. Only if i knew it wont start up again.. :-(
