My laptop is "vintage"

Few lines to tell a good story "vintage."
This is my powerbook: 17"/1Ghz/512Mb/60Gb/superdrive/<Edited by: Host>
Well, it is not a baby, but his work does so well. Indeed, his
was good, because Mom apple (the lowercase A is not a mistake, but
disesteem) decided that he can not do more.
The screen can't work anymore. Nor should it have appeared progressively
blue stripes, style waikiki sunset. The first few times was enough
change the angle, then gradually becomes the bluish
Standing on the whole screen and therefore unusable.
It had already happened thirteen months ago, not eleven, but more than a dozen, that is,
duration of its warranty.
But the question is not on warranty.
Thirteen months ago, at a great price, I proceeded to replace the part
higher (DISPLAY panel) of the laptop.
Now I cannot, because apple does not build (assemble?) Over the part.
I received a response that the piece is "vintage" stuff that is antique, odd
also that there are requests for this type ...
I think someone should explain to Apple that the only thing that
together to design objects and furniture vintage are prices, not
reliability, certainly not the style
Anyway, have you any advice, guys?
Thanks in advance
Paolo

Hi, Paolo. Apple won't repair your Powerbook now that it's old and classified as "vintage", but there are other repair services that will do so, including many Apple authorized service providers. If you are in the USA, try one of these reapir services:

I am unable to transfer scanned documents from PDF  to an editable word format.  OP corbally

    Hello @OC3028,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you would like to transfer scanned documents to editable Word format. I will do my best too assist you! Unfortunately, the Photosmart 6520 software doesn't come with the OCR (optical character recognition), that coverts your scans into editable text.
You will have to download a third-party software that supports this printer from Google. You can try this free download using Readiris Pro 14. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Have a great day!

  • Voltage

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro from 2007. Today it powered off and would not power on after operating for about 25 minutes.
There was no amber or green light on the power cable connector.
I tried another recepticle but had nothing. Removed the battery performed a reset then took it to an Apple Store.
It powered on with their adapter and mine. Wiggled the cable around but it was fine.
The building I was working in was built in 1807. However I am not sure when the wiring is from.
I was thinking the Power Adapter might not work if there was too low voltage but the adapter is rated for 100-240 volts.
I went back to the building and had an intermittent green light from a few circuits so I did not power it on.
They had renovations performed in .1999, have a 100 amp service but I do not know about the wiring.
I came home and it's been working fine for about 90 minutes
Do these power adapter become flakey after a while?
    It is a:
    85W MagSafe Power Adapter
Model Number 1222 (the invoice lists it as part # MA598Z/A
    100-240V-1.5A 50-60Hz
Note: This has the issue with the wire shielding sliding away from the adapter (if that makes any sense).
    That occurred around 2009.
I am not sure if these are relevant but I will post them.
In November 2009 the LCD did not work and Apple replaced a board with a PCBA MLB 2.2 GHz Rev2 (under the protection plan).
Unfortunately, I did not notice the speed. I had a 2.6 GHz but that is beyond the scope of this posting.
The past 12-16 the LCD brightness flickers, dims, brightens, etc.

This is my 2nd battery. 4-6 weeks ago it displayed symptoms of going lame. It was drained when the laptop shutdown. Quite honestly, I was not paying attention to the cable (green, amber or off).

In regards to replacing the dangerous power adapter, I'll get one from a third party. The Apple Store Rep. said me my laptop is "vintage" which I learned means Apple no longer provides parts (i.e. Power Adapter). Unless I am in California which has some law which makes them provide parts for 7 years.
FYI- I suppose this is quite different but the only other things I have seen operating with power in this facility are a vacuum cleaner, a few coffee makers and the electronic stove, a window air conditioner, a gas forced hot air heater and a few lights.
Perhaps I should try the independant circuit of the AC?
    Thanks

  • Problems with PDF downloads

I was ready to blame the latest update from Apple, but perhaps not. Here are the symptoms:
Our church publishes a newsletter in PDF format which can be downloaded from their web site every month. This month, after the latest Apple update, the downloaded document has problems. General format is OK (boxes around text, images) but all text is simply grey bars that seem shaded from one side of the page to the other.
If I save the document and try to open it in Preview the same problem.
HOWEVER, if I open the document in the Adobe reader the document is fine!
I thought this might be a problem with my iMac (first of the aluminium iMacs), so I tried this on my Apple laptop (recent vintage). Both machines run 10.6.8 with the latest updates from Apple applied. I have no funny "helper" programs; i.e. the software is pretty clean and all updated.
    Same issue on the laptop.
HOWEVER I looked for a generic pdf download on the web and downloaded a PDF instruction sheet from the Moen (plumbing) web site - no problem!
So now my suspicion is that the PDF document has the problem. But I would have thought that PDF is PDF and if the Adobe reader can handle the document that Safari and Preview should be able to? Is there some format switch in the program used to generate the PDF document that would cause the Apple programs to fail but Adobe to succeed?
Any thoughts welcomed! I'd like to figure out if it's me or them.
PS - I've not yet tried this on that "other" operating system. I could do that with a trip to the library

Thanks guys. I think I'll just rely on Acrobat as suggested. Sounds like somehting has changed on their end as the previous month's file loads fine.
I'll check with teh secretary ans see what has happened.
    Thanks

  • Nvidia & nvidia-utils upgrade breaks X

Yesterday I upgraded nvidia and nvidia-utils (nvidia-185.18.31-1 & nvidia-utils-185.18.31-1) and it caused X to fail on next boot. (I've downgraded for now).
In the /var/log/Xorg.0.log it gave an error that told me to go look in the kernel log (If you want the exact message, I'd have to upgrade again and try to boot. Because of the logrotate, I guess.)
this is what I found in /var/log/kernel.log
Aug 1 10:31:26 kasparov kernel: NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 185.18.31, but

Aug 1 10:31:26 kasparov kernel: NVRM: components have the same version.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I ran into this breakage today and simply rebuilding nvidia-utils and nvidia from ABS didn't do the trick. The symptom on my Toshiba Tecra M3 laptop (2005 vintage, Pentium M, Nvidia Geforce Go 6200/6600 video) is that X hangs completely with a blank screen. Nothing works and I have to force an ACPI shutdown by holding down the power button.
I tried various versions of Nvidia and downgrading xorg-server all to no avail until, as a desperation shot, I tried the beta Nvidia drivers 190.18. That seems to have done the trick. Just posting about it here in case there's anyone else in the same boat (i.e. rebuilding the release drivers doesn't work).

  • Next and final step... Installing Tiger! ^_^

Yes, it has beeen a while, no? lol Life can sure get you busy where you have no time to yourself! I finally got a new power supply (Was getting old) and motherboard (I messed up on of the onboard ide pins). Everything was worth it too! Now OS 9 only takes about 10 seconds to boot!! (Is that healthy? lol). Only thing I'm having troulbe with is the installment of Tiger. When I go aheaed and install Tiger it will just freeze at a certain point. Any ideas my Beige G3 friends?
Anywho, must be going now! You all have a great day

    Sabrina:
In addition to Tina's critical comments, you may have to pull any and all peripherals (extra PCI cards, RAM, etc...) prior to installation. I was unsuccessful in getting XPF to install Tiger on my Beige. My solution was to pull the hard drive, hook it externally to my laptop (2000 vintage) and use the laptop to install Tiger on the first 8Gb partition.
The laptop installed Tiger very quickly. I'd already installed OS9 on the 2nd partition, along with XPF. Once I put the HD back in the Beige, I rebooted to OS9 and then used XPF to boot Tiger. The first time I tried this, using XPF v4.0, the startup didn't work so well. I had to try several combinations of things, including reformatting the HD at least twice more, and different versions of XPF (the beta versions) before getting things to work correctly.
    What I eventually did was:
    1. pull all PCI cards (except the video card), extraneous peripherals
    2. replaced the PRAM battery (it was geting old)
    3. booted into open firmware and did an nvram reset
    4. zero'd the HD using the OS9 disk, partitioned the drive with the first partition less than 8Gb
    5. installed OS9 and XPF on the 2nd partition
    6. used the laptop to install Tiger on the first partition
    7. rebooted the Beige from the OS9 partition
    8. used the XPF v4.0b4, (verbose mode, no other settings changes) to boot Tiger
    9. Beige booted to Tiger and all has been well since
The only oddity is that when the computer attempts to sleep (in Tiger), the screen flashes on and off for a bit and then finally goes blank. I think this is something quirky with XPF and the sleep function. It doesn't do this at the login screen, nor does it do this in OS9.
    Cautions:
Don't install the 10.4.2 security update. This update hosed my wireless connection, and caused Tiger to become really unstable.

  • Laptop can no longer connect - Hub doesn't seem to see it any more

Hi Please bear with me - this is probably going to be long! I have been tearing my hair out for the last 36 hours trying all sorts of things to get my laptop to connect to the hub, but to no avail. Also, I am no tech expert - everything I know I find out by googling/reading forums like these. It used to connect, no problem.Laptop (an old Dell, running XP Pro) still 'sees' the Skyhub. But it seems the Skyhub no longer sees the laptop (not in list of wireless devices). My Samsung tablet and my son's Chromebook both connect successfully to Skyhub.Laptop connects successfully with nearby unsecured BT-FON networks.Laptop connects successfully with Skyhub via ethernet cable.  Things I've tried (not sure i can remember them all, haha):Disabled firewallTurned off encryptionRan windows update to laptop while connected via ethernetPinged what I think is the hub's IP address (192.168.0.1)  Nothing. 4 packets sent, 0 received, 4 packets lost.Used cmd prompt to try various suggestions I've read on forums - renewing IP, flushing winsock, etc. Don't understand half of what I did but I typed commands carefully, but didn't solve connection problem.I have tried changing the channel at both the hub end and the laptop end.I have tried entering IP address manually (and subnet mask and gateway and DNS servers). Didn't work so set it all back to 'obtain automatically'.I have pressed button on hub until light flashed 4 times, thereby putting it back to factory settings.A windows diagnostic test shows IP address failure after trying to connect to Skyhub.I have uninstalled/reinstalled/tried updating the wireless network card on my laptop. It says it is working properly.I have opened inSSIDer, and laptop quite clearly sees the Skyhub, and is receiving a strong signal. I'm a bit confused why it says the security is "WPA2-Enterprise". The Skyhub itself says security is WPA2-PSK (AES)Mindst, even with security turned off, laptop still cannot connect. So:Skyhub is still working on wired PC, and wirelessly for tablet and chromebook.Laptop is still working because it can connect okay to neighbouring networks. As a non-techie, it seems to me that something is stopping the hub from 'seeing' the laptop, and assigning it an IP address. But what?!Thanks in advance for any help.Louise I have taken a few photos:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/35233074@N04/

Hi. I have to say that your problem Louise seems very close to mine. My work laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T430, reasonably up-to-date) has secure direct access connection capability to my employer's network. However, while the laptop connects easily by wireless connection to my Sky router no internet access from the router outwards. This is a recent (last 1 – 2 months) issue and started as intermittent – the internet connection would come and go without any apparent rhyme or reason. It is now apparently a permanent issue. It is also only a wireless problem - it seems to connect to the internet OK by cable to the router. This is while at the same time other devices connected to the router get internet access fine. There are only about 7 or 8 devices max connecting wirelessly to the router at any given session. My workplace IT Service staff have investigated but washed their hands of the issue as the laptop connects fine both wirelessly and by cable to the workplace corporate network. My Sky router is a Sagem model (no model no. is evident – it’s an older model then the current Hubs) of probably 5 or 6 years vintage (I’m note sure of that). Does anyone have any suggestions? I should also say that at present I can’t access or alter any of the laptop connection settings because the work’s IT Services won’t give me the necessary device admin rights yet equally won’t attempt to resolve it because it’s my home network issue! Don’t let that put you off suggesting connection setup fixes though (I’ll happily put these to workplace IT Services! Specifically though – is there way to restore the router’s firmware to the last time it worked? Mark

I have tried plugging it into different USB ports on same laptop or a completely different desktop.  It is never recognized.  last week it was.  I took it apart & tried it in a 3.5 SATA external closure.  Still is not recognized.  I have info on it that i desperately need.  Is there any way for me to get my files off of it?

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news; this vintage drive might have died.
If you are lucky, it is only the power supply, although this is a thin hope and is not based at all on the facts.
Depending on your level of desperation, you might consider taking the drive to a forensic specialist.
My own Simple Save drive died suddenly one day about five months ago after several years of good service.  Fortunately, I never depend on only one device for backups, else they are not backups, but instead become single points of certain failure.
I hope you find a viable solution.

  • Can't Access Oracle EBS with a Lenovo X201 laptop

My Company runs Oracle E-Business Suite version 11.5.10.2. I recently had to get a new laptop (Lenovo X201). I can log onto the Oracle Application Home Page and select a responsibility, but when I select an operation, like Invoice Inquiry in the Payables Module for instance, I get the following message, "This tab has been recovered. A problem with this web page has caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab." The laptop is running the XP operating system and Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702. Our IT staff can't figure out the problem. They looked at all the usual cause for problems, like pop-up blockers, etc. They also spoke to Lenovo Support without finding a resolution. We experienced a similar problem with Dell laptops that they were able to resolve. Has anyone experienced this problem with a recent-vintage Lenovo computer and found a solution?

Can you find any details about the error in Apache log files and/or Sun JRE Console Window?
If the issue is reproducible, please make sure you meet the minimum requirements as per these docs.

  • Are people still having trouble with iPhone/HP Laptops?

Since I've had my Envy I've had no end of trouble with getting it and the iPhone to play nice. Any my search continues. So far, I have updated every bios, reinstalled Windows 7/iTunes many times, have restored the iPhone far more times than I care to remember and I am STILL having troubles with this thing. Having got through the Syncing issues with the PM55 chipset and iPhone I can now sync with my laptop. However all is not well as it would seem that I cannot sync my photo's. It doesn't matter if I have 0gb, 15gb or 30gb free, iTunes is telling me that there is not enough memory available. This error seems like an old one and there is even some info in the Apple KB but after following all that I still can't get it to sync my photo's.
    Some info on my setup:
HP Envy 15 (all the latest drivers installed, bios F.24) Core i7-820, 8gb ram etc.
    iPhone 32gb, ver 3.1.3
iTunes (whatever the latest one is)
I should add that I can sync my iPhone with an identical install of intunes on my vintage Quad core desktop PC, but as I use my Laptop a lot more (and have all my media, email, and contacts etc on it) I would prefer to sync to it.
Is there anything that I can do? Its very frustrating to have blown $4k on this equipment and it doesn't work...

Well I tried deleting the photocache but alas, no luck. I also tried syncing with just the photo's enabled, and it worked! So then I enabled my other media and that copied across too! I thought I was on a bit of a roll here, but now whenever I try and sync it will do one of 3 things:
    iTunes will crash.
iTunes will indicate that there is not enough memory on the device (+9GB free)
iTunes will remove the iPhone from the sidebar (and my computer/disk management) even though it will continue to charge.
Interesting point to note is that it works fine (cable/iphone/itunes/media library) on my desktop and macbook. Still really disappointed that I cannot get these two to cooperate. Also still haven't got any contacts from outlook but that may not be related?

  • New security option for Lenovo Vintage. X220 user's suggestion.

    Hi everybody,
Almost every model of Lenovo laptops has accelerometer, it used in Airbag protection and Reading optimization prog.
I suggest to Vintage programmers to make another new app that uses the data from accelerometer and will be responsible for security in the way like this:
    1. Somebody try to move a laptop
    2. The app receives the data from accelerometer and immediately block (turn off/ hibernate/ - user decide which option is suitable)
    3. Profit
Of cause the option to choose sensitivity is also necessary

Stedman1, Thanks I have just submitted it there too. It would be handy for others to also send them this feedback as we know that they must get thousands of suggestions a day and I guess who shouts louder gets heard. If everyone contacts them with the same suggestion we may be able to get this into development. :-)

  • Compaq Presario 2100 Laptop SSD Upgrade

I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop the was brand new in 2003. I have a newer laptop, but an currently trying to upgrade the Presario 2100 as much as possible. It's kind of a project now and I also want to get as much use as possible out of it. I have heard that the SSDs are super fast and would improve performance quite a bit. Has anyone made the upgrade to a SSD for their Persario 2100 series laptop already? All input is appreciated, especially all of the product info that was used for the upgrade. If nobody has done this, then does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade the Presario 2100 series laptop to a SSD?
    Thanks,
    Huck
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Believe it or not the Service Manual is still available.
    Manual
The Presario 2100 uses old school PATA (EIDE) hard drives which are different than the SATA SSDs you mostly see on the market. However, there are PATA SSDs. They cost a bit more per gig, obviously. I have put a PATA SSD in a laptop of about the same vintage as the Presario 2100 and it did improve the boot time and general performance significantly, but talk about the proverbial earrings on a pig!
This is a 64 gig PATA SSD which would be perfect for the Presario 2100 but is $90:

On eBay you will probably find 32 gig versions for a bit less.

  • Where can I find a MAC Laptop that was around between 2001 and 2003

I'm trying to recreate some data files that were created on a MAC laptop or G4 between 2001 an 2003. In addition to the laptop, or G4 if necessary, I need the OS of that time, the other OS support software and a copy of AOL from that period.

If the files are already on some kind of media, you should be careful to make a working copy of them so as to have a fall-back, just in case something goes wrong in the process of trying to access them.
There is a possibility files from one era may be read by more recent software, and upgraded by that software; this may be OK. But do not let such as process convert the originals, just in case that does not work or damages them instead of converting them.
To know more exactly what the software was, and the version, would be more helpful when looking for a vintage computer and software sets for this kind of project. If the originals were created in AppleWorks or some other, that may be easy to open; older versions of MS Office or Word may be obtainable. A local Apple User Group may be a source of some information or leads.
    Good luck with your project...!

  • Creating vintage backgrounds in Illustrator

    Hello,
I am completely new to Illustrator.  I'm looking to create some vintage backgrounds which look like Cath Kidston style wallpaper, specifically, one with polka dots and one with 5 pointed stars.  I don't want the patterns on a grid, but rather with the lines of stars/spots at an angle so that they create a diamond pattern.  I would then like to make the backgrounds look slightly like vintage wallpaper, so that they are not clean looking vectors.  Also, if possible, I would love to make the stars look like they have been done using paint (maybe a potato printing effect!).
Please could anyone help me with this (I have seen some lovely photos of this on stock photography sites, but they are very expensive and I think I can make my own).
    Many thanks
    Charlotte

    Oh, balderdash.
Illustrator is not "the wrong program" for this kind of thing. Criminy, it's just a matter of drawing a repeating pattern and then imposing a few "random" variations to the whole thing to suggest aging and "distress" after the pattern is built.
There are several path distortion features that can be used to impose slight irregularity to a collection of geometrically pristine paths. Texture and "distress" can be achieved by judicious application of blur and another raster effect or two. Even graduated overall lighting can be "overlaid" with a simple transparency object.
But Charlotte, beyond that, your question is too general for specific how-to answers. The most problematic part of your question is "I am completely new to Illustrator." This is not the kind of program you just dive into without taking the time to learn your way around it. Have you read the online help and actually worked through the steps it describes, to familiarize yourself with the basic principles, the specific tools and what they do, the available commands?
For example, if you were to come back here with an example of a particular pattern you want to build, would you know what someone is talking about if they told you to?...
    1. Draw the repeating element, store it as a Symbol.
    2. Use two applications of Transform Effect to create the pattern array.
    3. Expand Appearance. Leave it Grouped.
    4. Use a few clicks with the Symbolism tools to vary the fade, tint, etc.
    5. Give the whole thing just a little planar "tilt" perspective with 3D Rotate.
    6. Apply a slight Gausian Blur to the Group.
    7. Draw a path to surround the whole array. Give it a grad fill and apply a Raster Effect to give it a slight "distressed" pattern.
    8. Apply that surrounding path as a Transparency Mask to the Group.
    9. Draw another grad-filled path over the whole thing on a separate Layer.
    10. Apply a raster effect at the Layer level to give the new shape a bit of "surface" texture.
Just build it once. Then you can just swap out the Symbol Instances for a different pattern:
Apply Transform Effect to randomly rotate the Instances a bit:
    Add elements to underlying Layers:
    Etc., etc., etc.
The above detail screenshots are from a 10 x 10 Symbol array (i.e.; 100 Symbol Instances), entirely editable native AI CS3 content, done in about 45 minutes or so (including experimentation with various textures) on a 3- or 4-year old $300, 2GB Toshiba laptop (which has become my usual "Saturday morning AI forum" machine).
