My laptop's HDD is causing fps spikes

Hello.. I purchased a dv7-2170us laptop online about a week ago.
Whenever I try to play a 3d game like Counter Strike Source or Left 4 Dead 2,
I get random fps spikes every 10 seconds constantly.
Today, I brought an external HDD and did backup my files to format my laptop.
then Idk why but I decided to run those games in the external HDD..
and they worked without any fps spikes!
so.. i was wondering if anyone knows how to solve this problem.
Please help me.

Hi,
i am having similar problem,
did you find any solution?

  • Space designer causing cpu spike overload

Hope you guys can help with this, it's beginning to annoy me. I'm currently unable to use space designer reliably. I had this problem in Logic 8 and it's still happening in 9. I have one instance of SD in my current project and it's causing cpu spikes that are giving me errors. The funny thing is that the error happens just after a region that is being sent to the reverb has ended. the cpu meter then gradually rises until the error stops playback. If I turn SD off i don't get these problems or if I disable SD via automation when it's not needed it seems ok also. What the **** is this about? The thing is I really like the sound of SD and miss it when I have to use different reverbs. Anyone else having these issues? I read on another thread that setting all your inputs to "no input" helps but for me it doesn't. What else can I try?
    cheers
    p

    Thanks for your input.
Just to clarify, I am getting the spike once the audio data stops sending through the SD plugin (whilst the song is still playing). So, for example I may send a 10 second bit of audio through the plug - this works fine. Then once the audio stops sending and the reverb trail finishes....I then get the CPU going mad - and yet there is complete silence within the song - there is nothing else playing!
This has got to be a bug or conflict of some kind - my computer spec is massive and should be able to cope with a stereo bit of audio through one plugin! (Hope this makes sense.)
There have been a couple of posts similar but no answers as yet...
Wondering whether it is a conflict with UAD plugins or something which limits the reproduction of this bug...I have noticed that if I remove all UAD plugins from the channel strip in question, the error tends not to reappear - but the issue is unique to the SD plugin.

  • The External HDD that causes the SystemUIserver to cripple Mac Mini

    Hello all,
I have recently reinstalled my mac mini, starting with a secure delete of the Macintosh HD and complete DVD re-install with Mac OS X 10.6.4. I saved all of my data onto my external HDD which is a Western Digital 320GB. (Before i deleted and re-installed my mac i wiped this external HDD and formatted it to MS-DOS format using mac's disk utility software, so that i can move data between my HP Laptop (which i will be getting rid of soon and move to a mac book) and the mac mini with ease!)
Following the re-install i started to move all of my files and folders back to the mac when my mac became very very very sluggish. Taking 30-45 seconds to load safari (much longer for bigger programmes) and when i wanted to copy files across from my Ext HDD onto the mini it would copy at about 2-3MB/sec.
I subsequently went into the activity monitor and under the system memory tab saw that the SystemUIServer was using 3.14GB of real memory and was running the CPU at 80-90%. This was my problem. I then when onto the web to see why i was having such issues with speed and USB file transfer and forums talked about USB 1.0/1.1 selected or not having enough RAM which was not the problem here.
I then chose to force quit the SystemUIserver and my system started flying again, up to full speed, but it was only for 30 seconds until i saw the memory pie chart start to turn yellow once more as SystemUIserver started to eat up my real memory, (RAM).
I then turned off my Ext HDD, force quit systemUIserver and i once again had a stable system. So what is the problem??????
There is a communication error between my HDD and my mac which means that when i plug it in systemUIserver goes crazy, and slows the machine. What i do not know is how to get both my HDD and Mac talking without using up all of the RAM. Allowing me to transfer all of my documents back onto my mac. Why is this an issue???????.......Any help on this matter would be really kind as i did not have this issue on the previous install, but now i cannot stop this from happening.
    Thank you

    Hello again,
I have subsequently discovered that it is any external media that i plug in causes this fault. (my other external HDD, my 2.0 GB usb stick!)
Looks like that this issue is slightly bigger than i initially thought!
    Thank you in advance

  • W520 overly sensitive to movement..HDD crash cause?

I had an HDD crash on my new W520 so I ended up getting a new hdd but wondering now if my W520 is sensitive to vibration.
I will sit in a chair with the laptop on my lap and when I get up I will life the thinkpad and then move it laterally to sit it on the table.  Today, I noticed the system stuttered (streaming music) one time and the second time it just shut down when I did this.   I then moved it side to side laterally and actually was able to recreate it -- system paused (music halted) and resumed.   I checked the airbag monitor and see no warnings -- not sure if it would say anything.
I do not think it is a loose solder connection since the movement is quite gentle and I have used think pads for years like this without any issues..even had one to a belly flop from 3 ft and survived -- was running at the time.
Given I had the hdd crash I did get to replace the HDD, it is now accessible from the bottom.  What I do not like about the design is the hdd door has a backstop that holds the hdd into the connector (slides in the pocket to engage a non-latching connector) and then access door has the feature to keep the hdd from sliding back.  It does not seem to be "padded" so more a hard stop. It does have the blue side absorbing.
The chair scenario is just what was going on when the HDD died for good so see this as a clear indicator of something going on and think it is a design attribute.
    Just wondering....

Ah, so not always the two SSDs. Any chance that you are having issues with the Ultrabay III adapter? Others have reported that the loose fit caused disconnection issues, but I believe that you reported that all was well in your experience. There will be a new EC firmware release for a different power management issue (CPU throttling), but I've got no clue as to whether it will inadvertently address the random shutdowns too. I don't think that the engineering team has been able to reproduce a consistent shutdown scenario in spite of having some systems that did do this when in the customers' possession. It's difficult to fix a problem when you can't determine the failure mode scenario.

  • Cloud App Discovery - Agent causing CPU spike

I'm excited to deploy the Cloud App Discovery agent more broadly in our organization.   However, when pushing the agent to about 40 test workstations, we discovered that it caused a serious problem with 2 workstations.  The agent seemed to cause
a CPU spike, to the point that the workstation was unusable.  Once the workstation was restarted the problem happened again.  We ultimately, uninstalled the agent.
Are others having problems with the agent causing performance issues on workstations?

    Hi,
I have deployed the agent on approx. 20 HP laptops. So far everything has been fine.
Check the event logs to see if there is any useful pointers.
Check installed programs to see if there is something unique about these 2 desktops versus the others.  Remove any that are not needed or not in Company Policy.
Check AV is up to date and not conflicting with agent.
Run a belarc report (http://www.belarc.com/) on one working desktop then on one faulty one. Compare to check for any differences

  • Opening spotlight causes IO spike

Whenever I open the spotlight search panel, such as with the CMD+SPACE shortcut it seems to ping all the drives, waking those that were asleep up. This includes a CD drive, so I hear it spin up whenever I do CMD+SPACE.
It's annoying because that sudden spike in activity causes things like any video I might be watching to freeze for a moment.
I don't see why it would have to do this either, isn't it using a database rather than having to actually access the drives, and why a CD drive?
Any idea why it might do this? I've noticed that third-party interfaces that hook into the spotlight DB such as that google quick search thingy don't.

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that Spotlight is verifying each drive to check what's mounted so that it only shows you search results for available items (it doesn't help if it shows you the results for a disk that isn't attached).
Now, I agree that it shouldn't need to spin up the drives for this - especially CDs which take forever. The OS must have some cache of mounted volumes that Spotlight (and other apps!) could query.

  • History of Processes - how to view which process caused CPU spike?

We have been facing an issue with a domain controller (Windows Server 2008 R2, VM on ESX 5.0) over the past week. Around twice a day, the CPU spikes at 100% for about 10 minutes. We notice because we receive an alert from the hypervisor, but by the time we can actually log in to check what process is causing it, it would have come back to normal. There doesn't seem to be any pattern re times, its quite erratic. Sometimes at 08:00AM, sometimes at 01:00AM, 4:00AM, 7:00PM, etc. Also nothing in the Event Logs.
It's not a big deal but I just want to know if I can somehow record theprocess history, to see which process was stuck at 100% at a certain time. I know about Performance Monitor (perfmon) but it doesn't really meet my requirements since it doesn't record the actual processes (e.g. AV.exe, svchost.exe, chrome.exe, etc).Any...

You might check with your apps' developers to see if they support AppleScript, Automator, or other scripting languages that might be used for this. Some programs have built-in macro and scripting options that can be set up in a built-in editor or run in a built-in command-line environment of sorts, while others supply libraries for external scripting with AppleScript and others.
As for live tracing of a program's commands, most that you use will be coded in a low level language like C, C++, Java, or Objective-C, which are compiled and run in binary machine code as opposed to an interpreted language (one that does not need compiling to run), as is the case with most scripting languages (shell scripts, AppleScript, Matlab, etc.).
For the most part, the only options you have for "tracing" a program's functions are to monitor output that it might log to the console. You can see this by opening the console, but the output here is diagnostic in nature and is programmatically limited to what the programmers have intended be output (ie, things like warnings and errors, as opposed to every action the program is taking). You can also use the Terminal to directly launch a program's executable so it is hosted in the Terminal shell. This will give you direct access to all of the program's output, as opposed to that only intended for logging in the Console, but it is still not the same as a full output of the commands and routines the program is performing.
Some of Apple's developer tools can allow you to better monitor a program's functions, but these are intended for developers, and have some requirements, and will not allow you to use any results for productivity automation.

  • Which noises made by the laptop's HDD are considered normal, and which shouldn't be?

I got a replacement for a rather recent MacBook Pro 2012 model, which is the one that corresponds to the 15-inch screen, 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i7 processor. This new computer probably has around 3 weeks since I got it from the store. I have to clarify that I count only with the 1-year warranty, now.
My situation started after a couple of hours of getting it handed-over at the store where I got it from. We went through some really "sketchy" roads, before arriving home; firstly, roads covered with little rocks only, for about half an hour (it was a kind of middle-class suburb), and after that, we casually happen to visit roads one expects to encounter at a rustic town in Mexico. They aren't paved, but just land, with road bumps and potholes appearing quite oftenly. It's not a chaotic ride but not a very comfortable, pretty one either. So, one doesn't need to think excessively to get the picture of the car having been constantly shaking during that period of time (less than an hour), but on the other hand, the rest of the roads were of the normal-highway kind, smoother, before and after having visited those parts.
My worrying derives from the thoughts that refer to the possibilities of some kind of internal hardware damage or deadjustment, derived from all of that shaking part, to any of the movable components inside, particularly; not mattering how hidden or little, you know, if it could get me some problems eventually. It makes me wonder if the noises I hear all the time, coming from the hard drive, came from there, in comparison to the previous one I had and used; as if some component(s) could have deadjusted or something. Remember I said it was a replacement? Well, the previous one was much more silent when working, meaning, it didn't make those scratchy noises, but just the usual head-parking sounds as far as I perceived. It also means I now count with the 1-year warranty only, as I said before. For example, I can hear it in a "closed room" environment, which is silent enough to keep thinking about what is happening inside of the device you're using. I can also hear a kind of whirring or blowing sound, as from the HDD spinning (which is what I imagine, but I'm not sure of what it is exactly).
That's where the question comes in: Which HDD sounds are considered normal? How can I know them and differentiate them, in order to know if my laptop is O.K. or not? Could you describe the way you hear you MacBook working? Is there any program I can use to check it, beside the diagnostics mode included?
From all of this, I decided to run the AHT (Apple Hardware Test) more than once for my relief, but I'm not sure of its accuracy either. It showed no warnings. I need to know if it's enough with those tests to know if everything hardware-related is alright.
I don't want to get it checked from where I got it from, since it wasn't an exactly nice experience to get it changed and I can't be certain about wether the employees will help me good-heartedly. I haven't used the Apple Support phone number because I think the forums are a good option, so I trust your understanding. I look for more than "yes/no" answers, in other words, the "why", and a rather thorough response. I need to see you know what you're talking about, not just a guess. Thank you.

Here's an update. I just did the Disk Utility tests, of basically all the elements that appear on the left of the window (3 available selections), including the Macintosh HD one. They all passed the verifying and repairing processes, no warnings or errors whatsoever. Yay. The point is, yesterday I was looking at my photos from the Finder. I wasn't doing anything at all, really, not even moving the cursor, when I suddenly heard the HDD making the working-noise without stopping, just that constant scratchy noise. This went for something like 7 seconds straight, and at the very next moment, it started making a consecutive and tempoed stream of this same sound, but a little bit less intense, with interlapses of about a sec. This continued for about a whole minute. I'd like to know if things are really fine.
As I previously described, the guys at iShop almost don't want me there anymore, or at least that's what their distanced attitudes get my into thinking. I visited the place some days ago, to look at the new iPod Touch pretty quickly, and I clearly felt that the guards were watching me closely, you know, with a hostile mannerism, the kind of stance that you use, with arms folded, to look kind of intimidating. I really didn't do anything to deserve that paranoic and ridiculous behavior. What happened was, a bit hottened discusion with the manager, when I was telling him I needed a replacement, and he really wasn't giving me an empathetic and understanding attitude.
If a call to Apple Support is required soon, and my computer needs to be repaired or the HDD replaced, they'll most likely send me there, since it's the most prominent place of recommendation. Sincerely speaking, they do seem like the most prepared personel, and they aren't great per se. If that is so, I really, really hope that the hard drive is the only part or detail that needs some technical considering, and deserves my stress.
Thanks for your consideration, so far so good.

  • ITunes causing CPU spikes

Ever since I upgraded to the most recent version of iTunes, my laptop has gone extremely slow when iTunes is running (i'm now using winamp). The CPU usage spikes from 80% up to 95-100%.
My music is stored on an external hard drive, the laptop is an Inspiron 9100 (Pentium 4, 3.20GHz, 1024MB RAM) and had no problems whatsoever before upgrading.
I did a complete wipe of my laptop a couple of days ago and all other applications are running much faster, but i've downloaded iTunes again and the same problem occurs. I've also tried downgrading the version to see if that helps but it doesn't.
Anyone suggest anything or experience similar?

I have to agree that there is some major problem with iTunes - I'm totally unimpressed having never used it before and just having bought my first ipod.
    Windows XP SP2, 1.6 Ghz, 2Gb RAM
Insert any music CD and RIP via iTunes = 100% CPU utilization
Insert any music CD and RIP via Windows Media Player = 40% CPU utilization
So I need a dedicated machine to support the ripping of my music? What a joke.

  • DW FTP is slow and causes CPU Spike

Does anyone know why DW causes the CPU to jump up when it is
performing FTP operations? I'm new to DW and maybe this is normal,
but it shouldn't be. When I perfrom FTP activities, DW usually
takes up about 60-70% of the CPU???
Also, why is the FTP client so slow?
Dreamweaver takes so much longer than other FTP clients. I
compared it's usage to SmartFTP, FileZilla, and Windows built in
FTP, and Dreamweaver is so slow on a magnitude of 20x - 30x. For a
quick test I tried to pull down a directory using dreamweaver. I
have all the files local already, so I told DW not to overwrite the
files...so you would think it should speed through all the files
and realize that they are all dups and not download anything, for a
directory with 15 files in it, i would think this FTP operation
should take about 2 seconds. but it takes dreamweaver about 4
minutes to complete this, all my other FTP clients can figure this
out in under 5 seconds, and they don't need to spike the CPU to do
    it.
A quick search on the web tells me that I am not the only
    person with these problems.
I really hope Adobe plans on fixing the FTP problems.
    Technical details:
    Dreamweaver CS3.
    Windows Vista SP1, 4GB ram, Fujitsu T4220

I've had a related, ongoing problem with CS3 running up the
    CPU and acting
slow for just about every operation for no apparent reason.
    It goes in
surges, and just acts like molasses half the time, very
    annoying. It is to
the point that I really don't use CS3, I use DW8, but try to
    use CS3 here
and again to see if it has started working or if there is
    some patch
released. This is on my XP workstation at work, and my Vista
    workstation at
home. Both systems run CS3 slow enough that I just don't use
    CS3. This has
been going on for over a year, since I got my copy of CS3.
Too bad really, because I am tasked with approving CS3 for
    use by the rest
of our WEB team and I haven't been able to do that, so we
    continue to use
DW8. We are missing out on Spry integration and are slowly
    switching over
to Eclipse and Aptana instead. I think that if the CPU bug
    isn't fixed, CS3
will be the version that has us switch away entirely. The
    only hope seems to
be if they release the next version of DW before we can
    completely switch
away. We are a smallish state agency and only have 8 DW
    licenses, but
that's seven licenses they missed out on the upgrade path
    with unless this
is fixed (mine is the only upgraded so far). It just isn't
    useable in its
    present state. :-\

  • Jconsole seemed to cause JVM spike

I was remotely using jconsole to access a production environment and I soon noticed that the JVM on the jboss server started to spike. After several hours there was no more memory and we had to restart jboss to clear the memory up. This has never happened before until yesterday when we first used jconsole on the production enviornment. Anyone else seen this problem before?
    Jboss version is 4.3
on my workstations I was accessing a linux box with jconsole with java 1.6
here is what is defined in my jboss's run.conf:
    JAVA_OPTS="$JAVA_OPTS -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=12002 -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=false -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false"
So I was running jconsole remotely which seems like would not cause this problem however I don't see anything else on that server that would cause the JVM to spike like that. This has never happened before on this environment like I said expect yesterday when we ran jconsole. All things point to jconsole but I cannot say for sure. Is there an issues in the JDK 1.6 of jconsole that would cause this? Seems not since all the work should have been done on my workstation not on the server.
The only thing i found in the documentation is that using jconsole locally on a production environment is not recommended but remotely is fine.....

You're getting a crash in the native code of JMF. More than likely, the native code isn't threadsafe and you're just trying to access something shared simultaniously in 2 threads... Don't know that there's any way to fix it...

  • Any way to determine which app is causing a spike in my data usage, I've gone over my monthly limit?

In 2 separate 2 hour periods, my phone went through 500MB of data each period - pushing me close to my monthly limit on Verizon. I turned off Cellular Data completely, and have been trying to figure out what app is doing it.  It seems to be something that happens quite suddenly, as I've noticed that the phone gets really hot.  And no, I'm not streaming video, I don't have iTunes match, or any of those obvious issues.
So, I've downloaded Dataman, My Data Manager, and Onavo, but unfortunately, none of them allow you to see which apps are doing the data hogging. My Data Manager does allow me to see data usage on WiFi (the other 2 don't, assuming that all you care about is cellular data)....and it at least confirmed for me what I thought.....After a day of minimal data use, I suddenly had a spike of almost 20GB of data use in 1 hour.  Yes, you heard it 20GB!!!!  It's as if my entire iTunes music library was being downloaded (and no I don't have iTunes wifi sync enabled, and besides, I had just previously synced via USB, so there was nothing new to sync).
My guess is this is related to this:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/oct/17/iphone-5-iphone
Apple needs to figure this out -- Verizone needs to compensate all of us --
But in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas on how to figure out what apps/services are using the data?

        GV2,
I'm glad Mrhelper was able to shed some light on this for you! In iPhones, the amount of data you're seeing under each app is for the "Current Period." Just above that list you'll see info about the Current Period and Current Period Roaming. This is just an overall snapshot of total data usage for that period of time. The Current Period does not reset on its own, so it will be counting everything from the last time you reset it through now. You can reset it by scrolling to the bottom and tapping on "Reset Statistics."
So, for example, if you reset your statistics 3 days ago and then there's 1GB used under App Store you'll know that over the last 3 days 1 GB of data has been used for the App Store.

  • In-place update of web service causes CPU spike

I've done many in-place updates of my production service with no issues. Today when I ran an update the CPU spiked on both instances to around 99.6% for almost an hour. The CPU eventually came down to its normal range while under the expected load from the
service. I didn't see any requests fail, but response times were up significantly.
I ran another in-place update later in the day and the same thing happened again. Currently my production service is pegged at over 99% for over an hour. Thankfully this is a slow time for the service, otherwise this could be a real mess for me.
Before each in-place update I deploy to the staging environment and everything is working as expected (there's nothing on the staging environment before as I delete it every time the production environment is successfully updated). As a test I did the same
in-place update on the staging environment and that environment has been at 50% utilization for an hour now. It starts as soon as the update takes effect for each instance (one instance pegs a couple minutes before the other).
I have profiling turned on for this service, and when I go to look at the profiling report I generally get these messages:
5:51:24 PM - Connecting to the Profiling agent on the VM instance
5:51:27 PM - The Profiling agent is preparing to process the request
5:51:28 PM - Preparing the Profiling logs on the VM instance
5:51:42 PM - Uploading the logs from the VM instance to the Windows Azure storage account.
5:51:43 PM - Profiling log request failed. Details: Profiling agent failed to upload log snapshot to Windows Azure storage account.
I'm not sure if it's related to profiling or not, but I'm wondering if there is something broken with the in-place update process in Azure?
    Any help is appreciated.

As further investigation I deleted the staging environment, re-deployed to it, and that worked just fine, CPU levels were normal. I did the VIP swap, and my production environment is back to normal.
The staging environment (old production env) continued on it's spike for one of the instances. I checked and the instance that isn't spiked is the one I successfully got a profiling report on. I'm going to wait an hour or so and run a profiling report on
the other instance to see if that also gets the instance back to normal CPU times.

  • After Effects and Rotoscoping causes fps loss in info panel

    Hello,
I am pretty new to after effects, so please take it easy on me if this is an easily fixed issue or if I am doing something wrong. Here is my whole process.
I have a canon xl2, shooting in 24p with 2:3 selected. I then import the video from the camera to premiere using capture. This was filmed at 16:9.
In PP I open a new project, I use DV - 24p Widescreen 48khz. I have the time code set to auto detect in capture.
I then import the captured video to after effects. I am trying to get better at rotoscope brush, so this is where the problem is.
I import the file, drag the source to the new composition icon, then double click the layer in the composition.  I select rotobrush and brush the object.
I then select play, which will go thru and play the file, adjusting the rotobrush. As I view the file, my info panel is up and it begins by showing 23.976 (realtime). The preview panel is showing 23.98 fps.
After a few seconds, the rotoscoping fails and the info panel shows my actual fps vs the file fps.  SO in red it shows something like 7.005/23.976 NOT realtime.
I've tried to do some research on this, and I am not sure if everything is set up right.  I have read that its best to work on noninterlaced video in AE, i believe it is seperating.  In interpret footage it is showing under fields and pulldowns area: lower field first and then it is removing pulldown with WWSSW.  Showing a effective framerate of 23.976.  Under frame rate area i have selected [conform to frame rate] and 29.97 is in the window. Under pixel aspect i have widescreen 1.21.
I know this is a huge wall of text, but I'd rather swamp you with info then not have enough.  Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Why the fps drops out so much on the rotoscope? Also note, I am only losing fps after pressing play to have rotoscope find the edges itself.
Thank you for any help on this matter.

Running window 7 pro - 64 bit, adobe CS5 production premium. At the moment its the trial version - get my copy in the mail tommorrow.
PC is i7 920 oc'd to 3.6, 6 gigs ram, 7200 rpm HD with 64Mb cache, gtx480 with 1500Mb Vram. Using the latest Nvidia drivers.
I believe I am using OpenGL for rendering, but not positive.

Ok, awesome.  Thanks a ton for taking the time to explain it to me and make sure that I understand the proper way to reference it.
With all this considered, is there any reason why someone would do the traditional rotoscoping vs using the rotobrush to create a matte?
To me it seems like the roto brush pretty much replaces traditional rotoscoping.  If thats the case, wouldn't it almost be considered a new rotoscoping method.
Like in the past, people used to dig holes with shovels and by hand.  Excavating holes this way was hard and took alot of time.
Over the years, technology made it possible to use a backhoe to dig holes, making it super easy. Both methods are excavating, one is just using an easier method.
I guess thats where my confusion came in, I guess the way I look at it, due to never having done the traditional rotoscoping method, I just considered it the same thing.
Anyway, I hope I dont look like a giant *** with my posts.  Cuz anyone willing to take time outta there day to help someone else in a courteous manner deserves all the praise I can give.
    Thanks again.
