  • PC thinks my iPod Touch is a camera

Whenever I plug my iPod Touch into its USB port, the PC (which is running WindowsXP) gives me a window with 3 choices.  I can either "launch" 1) the ABBYY FineReader (which looks like scanning software), 2) the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard, or 3) Picassa 3.  I suppose there is a 4th choice which is to do nothing and that's what I usually do.
I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5, which might've been a mistake.  I don't recall whether my iPod showed up under DEVICES with the previous version, but I don't think I ever had any trouble finding it.  Now, DEVICES doesn't even show up on the left-hand column in iTunes.  I followed some instructions that were suggested for a question similar to mine.  The result was that iTunes wanted to "Restore" my iPod, i.e. restore it to its factory settings and (I presume) wipe out any apps or content I already managed to put on it.  It didn't show the "name" of my iPod or any other information about it, like I remember seeing on a similar screen on my PC before (most likely in the previous version of iTunes).
If I look under My Computer in Windows, the iPod is visible and even shows the "name" we gave it the way iTunes used to.  The trouble is that My Computer recognizes it as a "Digital camera."  If I double-click on it, I see the two pictures I've transfered from the PC to the iPod but nothing else.  If I try dragging an mp3 file into that window, nothing happens.
    So I suppose I have 2 questions:
    1)  How do I get my PC to recognize my iPod Touch as an iPod instead of a camera?
    and
    2)  How do I get DEVICES to show up in iTunes without wiping out the existing Apps and downloaded content?
What I would really like to do is move some music and some podcasts from my PC to the iPod Touch, but right now all I can move are pictures.  That is why this question has the title is does and I'm hoping answers to the above questions will allow me transfer mp3 files, which is my ultimate goal.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

I went to the link you posted and followed all the steps.  I was thrilled to see that it worked!  I don't recall whether my PC still recognized my iPod Touch as a camera or not, but DEVICES did show up in iTunes and it recognized the name of my iPod Touch.
Now, though, everything is back the way it was.  The PC tells me I have a camera connected via USB and iTunes doesn't even have DEVICES listed in the left-hand column.
I'm wondering if this is the problem:  I had the iPod on until the battery was so "low" that it stopped.  I didn't press and hold the button on top.  In fact, until I read the article you linked to, I didn't even know you could turn the iPod on and off that way.  I would only press it once until the screen turned blank and simply pressed the Home buttom to turn it back on.  Until I read that article, I thought the Home button was the On button.
So now my question is this:  Should I ALWAYS turn the iPod off by pressing and holding the button on top until I see the red slider on the screen?
    Thanks!

  • Ipod seen as digital camera??

when i plug in my ipod it doesnt show up in itunes but it does show up in my computer. the problem is its seen as a digital camera. ive tried every usb port on my computer, reinstalling itunes, and switching the autoplay thing to take no action. it still wont show up in itunes though.

Exactly. Since I took a couple of screen shots (just for fun) whenever I synched it opened iPhoto and it showed my Touch with a blank photo. I then went to (on my Touch) Photos>Photo Albums>Saved Photos>Delete Photo. Once I did that, it no longer opened my photo program on my computer.

  • My windows 7 computer thinks my iPhone is a digital camera.

My windows 7 computer recognises my iphone as a digital camera so we cant sync an iphone 4 to my computer and we cant set up an iphone 5 through itunes.
    Please help.

An iOS device with one or more pictures in the camera roll appears as a camera to Windows Explorer. You can copy and paste the files to a new location, then return to the device to delete the originals once they have been safely copied from it. Don't connect more than one device at the same time. If iTunes still cannot detect the device try restarting both the device and the computer and check the cable works with another device (though I guess you've already done that).

  • Computer Thinks My iPod Touch is a Camera

I know there are lots of topics on this, but I can't find a solution! I recently recieved a new Laptop (Dell Inspiron running Windows Vista 32-bit.) When it came to plugging my 16gb 2nd gen iPod Touch in for the 1st time, I went into My Computer to transfer my music over, but my iPod was being displayed as a digital still camera. It is appearing in iTunes with all my music on it, but the problem seems to be with the computer. I have tried updating the device driver, as suggested in the following thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1141495&tstart=0
but it just says the correct drivers are installed. I've tried uninstalling the drivers and then reconnecting my iPod, but the computer just installs the same driver again. Last time I checked, my iPod was working with my desktop computer (that also has all my music on it) that is running windows xp. I have the latest version of iTunes installed and software 2.2 on my iPod (2.2.1 update almost killed it!) Any help would be grately appreciated! Thanks x

do you have 'Saved Photos' on your iPod? i.e. ones which you have obtained on the touch by email/safari/screenshots?
this is what usually makes the computer think it is a camera. when you do have 'Saved Photos' you can remove them either by deleting on the ipod (select photo, hit the bin icon) OR (on a PC) navigate to My Computer, it should come up in there like other external drives/disks do.
you CAN'T however move your music from your iPod to your computer. because (apart from with photos) it does not have a disk mode. you will need to move your music from your old computer to your new one as you presumably have with your other files.

  • Windows 7 running PC thinks my iPod Touch is a digital camera?

Hi everyone. I've had my second generation iPod Touch for over 2 years now. I originally had it synced up with iTunes on a laptop running Windows Vista, and it worked perfectly. I then switched it to a new laptop, running Windows 7. That laptop let me transfer everything fine, and let me play, add and remove music and apps (in other words, it worked fine). Then, that laptop had some problems (the hard drive fried itself and I had to get it replaced.) When I got the laptop up and running again it was like it was a new laptop. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes (10.2.2 is what I have on here now) but the laptop is recognizing my iPod as a digital camera instead. To be clear, my iPod shows up in iTunes and I can play music, but it won't let me put the music from my iPod into My Library, and it won't let me add or remove songs. I've tried updating the drivers in my Device Manager but that seems to not work. I've also changed the Autoplay settings on my iPod, but that also didn't work. Please help! I'm getting to the point where I want to chuck my iPod out the window and just buy a new one!

  • Windows thinks my ipod touch is a digital camera. How do I change this so itunes can see it?

Windows thinks my ipod touch is a digital camera. How can I change the device in windows, so that i can re-register it as an ipod and itunes can connect with it.?

It is normal for the iPod to be seen as a camera since that is how one gets photo off the iPod.  You can turn it off by:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Disabling digital camera notification in Windows XP
To get iTunes to see you iPod see:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
If you previoulys installed camera or scanner software that may be causing the problem.

  • Took fotos with iPod touch, now laptop thinks iPod is a camera and won't sync with iTunes

I have been loading vinyls onto iTunes using EZ Vinyl Tape converter. I have sync'd OK until recently when problems encountered with EZ. However there are some tunes on laptop to sync. After using the iPod touch as a camera I now cannot sync.  The laptop thinks the iPod is a camera and does not initiate iTunes, instead the laptop gets a totally blank screen and I cannot do anything, not even switch it off. I have scanned laptop for bugs, viruses etc using norton. I am totally stuck now.

  • All of my iTunes music/apps have been deleted, and my iPod is being recognized as a digital camera by the computer. Help?

    Hi!
I went on my iTunes today, and it kept saying "
The itunes library file cannot be saved. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation" I restarted my computer and opened iTunes, only to find that all of my apps and songs have been deleted. When I plug in my iPod, it says that this iPod is registered with another computer. My computer, however, is recognizing my iPod as a digital camera, with the name of my father's iPod. I have no idea how to fix this and get all of my songs/apps back. Someone please help!

Check your iTunes version - although your 5th gen works with older iTunes versions, at least 7.4 is required for the IPT - older versions will not even recognize it.
As for the Apple site not working, there have been sporadic reports of that, no known reason, usually resolved in a few hours.
You could also try updating using Apple Software Update (usually found in Start > All Programs), or from within iTunes (Help menu > Check for Updates).
    Hope this helps...

  • IPod touch recognized as camera

I have an iPod Touch 2gen and I had to reformat my laptop. It is using Windows Vista (ugh, I know). I want to pass the files (apps and music) from the iPod to the computer (The iPod Touch has the latest iOS it can have and I just downloaded iTune so it's also the latest one as well) and I can't because the computer is recognizing the iPod as a digital Camera. I've tried disabeling the action in the Control Panel by choosing "Take No Action" in the Auto Play thing. I've also tried to do it through the Computer Manager on My Computer and nothing. Anyone else has any other way I can fix this? Or maybe another way I can transfer my files from the iPod to the computer?
    Thanks in Advance!

  • Windows XP only recognizes iPod Touch as a camera.

There are older discussions on this topic here, but they did not solve my problem. So I thought I would post what finally worked for me.
For some reason my PC started thinking my iPod Touch was a camera. Despite what I have seen elsewhere, it was not due to my having pictures on the device... there are none.
Others have talked about the need to update the ipod device driver, but Windows XP w/ Serivce Pack 3 does not allow me to do that.
I noticed that the Apple USB Driver was missing, and could not get it replaced until I found this at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver
Right-click the Apple Mobile Device entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.
If asked to connect to Windows Update to search for software, choose "No, not this time."
Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install". Then click Next.
Click the Have Disk button. Note: If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. Then the Have Disk button should appear.
Click the Browse button, then navigate to the following location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
    Double-click the usbaapl file.
Click OK in the Have Disk window. Then click Next. Click Finish. Windows installs the driver.

    Hi w!cked,
If your PC only recognizes your iPod touch as a camera and it doesn't show up in iTunes, try downloading and installing the latest version of iTunes. You can download iTunes 8.1.1 from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If the issue persists, make sure the USB drivers are installed properly as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

  • Iphone recognized as a digital camera

my iphone is connected to my computer via usb and itunes does not recognize the device the computer thinks it is an iphone digital camera

It's okay that your computer thinks that your iPhone is a "digital still camera", however it does not use the Apple Mobile Device driver like it should. The solution is simple and doesn't require re-installing iTunes.
    1. Plug in your iPhone into any USB port.
    2. Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager.
    3. Find 'iPhone', probably under 'imaging devices'.
    4. Right click on iPhone.
    5. Click on Update Driver, Install from a specific location, Don't search I will choose the driver to install.
    6. Find the folder with the iPhone driver. It is very likely that is in:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
    7. Use the text box to point to that iPhone driver directory.
    8. Open iTunes and your iPhone should show up in the Device section.
    Good luck!

  • Intel iMac and new digital cameras

    Hi,
Thinking of purchasing a Sony digital camera with the built in HD (vs. buying those that use a DVD/CD). The HD type can hold up to 5hrs. of video vs. the CD version's 1 hr.
However, it's newer technology so don't know much about the pros/cons. Does Apple/iMac support the ability to be able to connect this new digial camera to the computer (essentially seeing it as an external hard drive), and allow me to copy the videos to my mac, play around with it in the video software and then burn to a DVD/CD from the computer?
Any suggestions or feedback would be helpful.
    Thanks!

In fact, it's not the HD that's a problem, it's that they encode the video using either MPEG4 or MPEG2. There are perfectly good DV-HD camcorders out there.
Video for editing should be recorded in one of the DV formats: DV, DV-HD, DVCPRO, etc. These formats don't use a lossy compression algorithm, so they maintain the highest quality and fidelity of recording. Because they don't use the lossy compression of the MPEG encoding of the direct-to-DVD camcorders, the video requires much more space than you find on a DVD, hence the reason they use 14G or 21G DV tapes.
With MPEG2 and MPEG4, the video has already been compressed and quality substantially degraded. To edit it, you need to transcode it into one of the edit formats (one of the DV variants), and then export it -- which takes time and degrades the video quality.
You want one of those direct-to-DVD camcorders only if you never want to edit the video, just play it back exactly as you shot it. In that scenario they are ideal because it saves you from running anything throught the computer.
