My Lightroom defaults now closely match Nikon CaptureNX

I want to speak to anyone struggling with the lack of "punch" and diminished colors of Lightroom compared to their camera manufacturers software (Nikon, and CaptureNX in my case). I can say that at least in my case, I have matched the output of CaptureNX (color and "punch") using a hybrid of 2 techniques I found in this forum. The effort was minimal (less than an hour to set up new defaults for my camera), and it cost me NOTHING! No need to buy a Greytag MacBeth color checker. Because of that, it may not be PERFECT for the purists, but it's close enough to perfect for me and I'll let you judge by my few examples.
I want to thank Eric (Madmanchan) for his EASY to follow instructions on matching ACR to any given manufacturers raw converter. Reading this made my solution possible for me.
http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/acr-color-match/
I used that along with another radical concept mentioned by Will Rees at http://www.reesweb.com/calibrate2jpg. This approach was to try to use a downloadable image of the MacBeth chart, photograph it with Raw+Jpeg, and try to adjust your calibration settings using Bruce Fraser's scripts and ACR.
I decided to instead try the concept of using a RAW image taken by my camera, of a downloadable MacBeth chart image, and then develop that RAW image using CaptureNX. I then followed the rest of Eric Chan's method (VERY easy) to manually calibrate the ACR image to match what CaptureNX gave me.
Once I had the calibration numbers, I put them into Lightroom and saved them as the camera default. The whole process took me about 1 hour, and cost me NOTHING. I have tested this with direct comparisons of the CaptureNX output to Lightrooms now default treatment of my raw images and I cannot say enough how happy I am with the extremely close conversions.
Here is a screenshot of the comparison of my color checker images (the ones I used to compute the calibration)... The one on the left is the NEF developed by Lightroom using the new default settings, and the same NEF developed in CaptureNX. Pretty close IMHO.
http://www.sbsutherland.com/samples/colors.jpg
The next images are a comparison of a sample photo which has a variety of colors on it, using the same new defaults in Lightroom for my camera. Top is Lightroom, and bottom is CaptureNX. I had to boost the brightness of the Lightroom image a bit to make them similar, but that is it.
http://www.sbsutherland.com/samples/photo.jpg
I have yet to find a sample in my collection of photos that isn't really, really close to the CaptureNX colors and "punch". I am not qualified to comment on the itty-bitty pixel level details of the conversions.
The point of my post, is that it is possible to use a combo of the Will Rees, and the Eric Chan methods above to quickly create an acceptable (to me at least) calibration that closely matches the look I was used to out of CaptureNX.
For what it is worth (and I mean that since my numbers seem SO different than other Nikon calibration numbers I've seen)... my calibration settings were (Nikon D70S):
Shadow Tint: 0
Red Hue: -3
Red Saturation: -8
Green Hue: -9
Green Saturation: +38
Blue Hue: 0
Blue Saturation: -28
I would encourage others to try this and I would be happy to try to build a complete step-by-step which combines the two methods. I admit, I had to dig deep (basic algebra) to figure out how to keep the color Values "proportionate" using the Eric Method.
I know that there will be purists that rightly state that a photo of your screen showing a Greytag MacBeth downloadable image is not an accurate way to do this. HOWEVER by comparing the same image taken by your camera off the same screen as you do the adjustments on, using the software you like (with the image the way you like it), and lightroom/camera raw, it is possible to get that image extremely close.
Looking forward to comments (good or bad) on this... Regardless, I love my ACR/Lightroom conver

Thanks for this.
Your numbers are very different from the other numbers for cameras like this purely because you're in fact extracting an approximation of the Capture NX conversion (which is probably far from ideal from a colorimetric sense) instead of to where the patches actually need to come out if you were going for color accuracy. Your method will, in fact, yield what people have been asking for (conversions close to what the camera manufacturers software does) instead of the more correct but duller closer to the actual world parameters that calibrating with a shot of a colorchecker will yield. Very interesting.

I have Lightroom 4.4 and a Nikon d800 with firmware upgrade 2.005. raw files are now since upgrade, unreadable. any plugins or advice? Thanks

I select the images I want uploaded, NEF files, click the "IMPORT" button, process bar comes up and shows work in progress, but no progress. after about 2 minutes, dialogue box appears with message: "unable to import because the following files are unreadable: NEFxxxx, etc."

  • Please tell me what I need to get Lightroom 4 to read my Nikon 810 raw files.  Have downloaded all versions from 8.6 to 9.  Photoshop 6 has no problems reading these files

Can anyone tell me how to get Lightroom 4 to read my Nikon 810 raw files Have downloaded 8.6, 8,7, 8.8, and 9 raw converter files and none will work.

You haven't seen the raw image data until you look at the DNG files in Lightroom. The DNG file contains precisely the same raw data that was in the NEF file. The image that you see on your camera is the JPEG preview that is built into the NEF file. And the JPEG preview is affected by all of the in camera settings. And those settings COULD include Active D-lighting, sharpening, style settings, Expeed processing, etc. And none of those settings are going to be picked up by Lightroom.
It's natural and expected that the raw image data won't appear to be as good as what you saw on the camera display. But you can make adjustments to get the images looking even better than what the camera displayed. And that is what shooting raw is all about. If you read in your manual it will indicate that shooting raw produces an image that must be processed. And that is what you do in Lightroom. If you find a set of adjustments that you make consistently to all of your images you can make those adjustments on a newly imported image and then save new camera defaults. Then those settings will be applied to all images that are imported from that point onward. And will be applied to any already imported images when you click on the reset button in the develop module.

  • 3 reasons why i won't switch to Lightroom for now

Lightroom is so nice, so intuitive & user-friendly that I almost switch from Bibble to Lightroom even if there are some very important features missing in order to call lightroom a professional grade application.
Here are the major reasons why i wont switch to Lightroom for now:
    1. Missing a good sharpening tool
    2. Missing a good noise reduction tool like Noise Ninja
    3. Missing an automated lens correction tool like PTLens
I think the last 3 will not be a problem any more when Adobe releases the SDK When do you think the SDK will be available ?
    Would also be very useful:
    1. Ability to export a slideshow to DVD (as a wedding photographer, i usually provide my customers with a low res slideshow of their pictures at the end of the wedding day).
    2. Option to print to file or option to export to any color profile (the lab where I send most of my print work have their printer profiled & they provide those custom profiles). As a work around, i can for now have an export action that do the profile conversion thru a Photoshop droplet this work but would be better to have that feature built in
In order to work around for the print to file or to jpg file that Im missing, I tried 1 of those virtual printer driver like Miraplacid Publisher It does work but there seems to be a problem with color management... When I print from Photoshop to this virtual printer, I get a jpg file that match exactly what I see on the screen when I try the same with lightroom, I get a jpg file where colors are not exactly what Im expecting
Should those features be available, I would not hesitate even 1 minute to switch to lightroom.

    My answer to your reasons:
    1) and 2) I just take care of taking sharp pictures. I can't see the need of a sharpening tool. I use LR as my digital darkroom, if I want to retouching a picture I have PS Elements and Noise Ninja. AND the new LR 1.1 has a much improved noise reduction and sharpening tool.
OK. I'm not saying that everybody should learn how to shoot properly so that the use of sharpening or noise reduction wouldn't be required, but there are IMHO other tools that can fit the requirements of the casual photographer or photoblogger.
The same for 3. I never needed any lens correction mechanism. I can't see a reason for that either. I don't have lenses that need any correction and I don't like to do fancy stuff on my pictures.
LR gives me exactly what I need, and waht I need is a program to download and work with several hundreds of pictures from my digital SLR, this means basically cropping and applying a colour profile. And IMHO LR does this pretty well, plus all the catalogue and managing stuff. I can care myself for the rest pretty well.

  • When will Lightroom and Elements support the Nikon D600?

When will Lightroom and Elements support the Nikon D600?  In the meantime is there a workaround so the D600 raw files can be exported to Lightroom or am I simply out of business until Adobe develops the needed patch?
As best as I have been able to figure out I may as well rebox the 600 and go back to my older, supported camera, until whenever.

A: What were you using before your precious D600 showed up today.
    A D90 with good glass.
    Nikon 70-200 f2.8, Nikon 24-70 f2.8, Voigtlander 58 f1.4, Tokina 11-16 f2.8.
Now I need to get a good FF wide solution for the D600.
Trigger on the D600 is much more stiff than my D90 so I'm having to press down a bit harder to get the AF confirmation. Just need to get used to that I guess.
FYI, JPG files right out of the camera are looking good.
B: Don’t you think Adobe wants to sell you the next generation product/upgrade to accommodate all of our insatiable photographic pursuits???
I had been using Apple's Aperture and switched to Lightroom a couple of months ago. I thought the price was actually quite fair for the power of the LR software. I did have to updgrade my computer's RAM....
C: Have a nice glass of wine tonight and enjoy your $2K investment. I’m personally looking forward to savoring a next generation photographic paradigm.
We did enjoy some vino last night! I was thinking I would possibly jump ship to Sony A99 and just switch to all Zeiss glass with autofocus, but I'm not convinced that the EVF is for me, and I'm really not a video shooter, mostly just landscape and real estate. Also, I the Sony turned out to be priced a bit too high for me personally in comparision to the D600.
    Buenos Dias!

  • When will Lightroom become compatible with the Nikon D750?

Lightroom 5 will not open .nef pictures from my Nikon D750, is there an update coming soon?

Yes, there will be an update. But there is no announced date. There is a release candidate DNG converter 8.7 you can use in the meantime to create DNG copies that you can use in Lightroom right now. When the update is finally released you can switch to your NEF files.

Support problem. The adviser tried to diagnose the failure of an application called JOTNOT PRO to update. He said he'd phone back at 8pm. I pick up his call at 8pm. Electronic voice: thank you for calling apple. We are now closed" So now I have 2 problems: the adviser had got me to reset so bye bye wifi passwords and settings. And then when he phones back as we agreed he's not actually on the phone, it's just a voice saying Apple Support is now closed! What on earth is going on at apple support I wonder.
Anyway, the original problem: an application called JotNot Pro fails to update. The error message says something like "you cannot update this cos either you bought it with a different Apple ID or somebody else bought it."
    Neither applies. Can anybody help?
PS. This is my first approach to the support community so please bear with me!

You might have better luck contacting the app's support or developers.

This has nothing to do with your pictures. As long as LR works, nothing happens. The CC app merely has lost an entry in the installer database. Would a reinstall fix it? Sure. Is it necessary? Not really (until the next version or update). So unless you have too much time to spend or something isn't working, I'm sure you can find more interesting things to do with your tiem. Otherwise use the cleaner tool and get to it:

  • Who knows how to make Word the default when closing Apple Works documents?

step by step if you don't mind? i've never used Apple Script. is this the solution?
    thanks and Happy New Year

Your question about making Word "the default when closing AW documents" is a bit unclear.
An AppleWorks document is an AppleWorks document. If you want it in Word format, you must explicitly save a copy of it as such (and also append the .doc suffix to the proposed file name).

I would run http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html and delete any Acrobat folders that have been created, then try again. Be sure to log in as the administrator and disable anti-virus when you have problems like this.

  • Creative Cloud had me update Lightroom. Now have two versions. Neither works. What is Adobe doing?

Creative Cloud had me update Lightroom. Now have two versions. Neither works. What is Adobe doing?

    1. I have Creative Cloud and Lightroom v5.7.1.
    2. CC offered a new version of LR.
    3. I clicked download new version.
    4. I now have 2 (two) LR shortcut icons on my desktop monitor screen.
    5. The new version doesn't open.
    6. The old version opens. Window pops up - LR catalog can't open. Quit other version of LR. Also - preview of image in LR is blank. Says photo missing.
    7. Computer specs? Don't know what you want. 32Gb ram, i5, 1Tb
    8. LR worked fine before upgrade.
    9. Reached Adobe by phone. Started to talk. Line went dead.
    10. My phone is working fine.

You need Lightroom 4 or CS6.  Otherwise you will have to download the free DNG software and convert images.

The above list show the current camera models supported by Adobe Camera Raw (plugin for PS CC) and Lightroom 5.3.
You will see that the Df Raw support was provided in the latest version of LR 5.3.   Support for the D300s was introduced in LR 2.5. (the NEF files are different.)
Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can only be updated after the camera manufacturer has produced the camera and made it publicly available. If you are using an earlier version of Lightroom then that is your problem.
Please post details of the version you are using at present.

  • Lightroom 5 now in trail mode but i have authentic serial number

Lightroom 5 now in trail mode even though i have bought the software and been using it for over a year. When i in put my serial number in it tells me its invalid. How do i convince this software its authentic?

Hi F.McLion, thanks for your reply.
I signed in to my Adobe account and looked at setting up sharing with mobile option then realised that my trial had expired and now its rest so that when i enter LR its counting down the 30 days, currently 25 days. As i first mentioned when i enter my serial number, the one i received from the [email protected] says its invalid.
I'm trying to use the stand alone and not the CC.

    Not wrong?
Let us have a look at the error message:
"The following files were not imported because they could not be read"
This clearly gives the user the impression that there is a reading error where you want to copy the files from. Is that the actual error?
No, the actual error is that the file could not be written at the destination.
It is possible that it is not factually wrong because Lightroom first make a failed copying attempt without giving an error message, then still assumes that the files have been copied and tries to import them, and THEN makes a failed import attempt from the destination and gives the error message. But that would never be anyone's first guess when they experience that error message.
A much better error message would be: "The following files were not imported because they could not be copied to the destination folder."
