My Lightroom lens corrections need correcting. Is this normal?

I have bought myself my 1st DSLR camera (Nikon D3100) as i now want to shoot Raw instead of Jpeg. I've always shot Jpegs in the past with my old cameras. The in-camera Jpegs from my new Nikon don't show any lens distortion. However, when i open the Raw (NEF) files in Lightroom and tick 'enable profile correction' in the Lens corrections section, the distortion correction seems too much and i have to manually adjust it every time.
The lens profile comes from Lightroom itself (not from other users), & so this doesn't seem quite right to me that the correction is somewhat wrong each time.
I'm wondering if i'm doing something wrong or that maybe its even normal to have to adjust the correction further yourself each time (and perhaps most users have to do that too)?
I've included 3 Jpegs of the same image to demonstrate the problem (detailed below):
1) The export from Lightroom with the lens distortion corrected by Lightroom (note the straight red line).
2) An exported Jpeg version of the uncorrected Nef from Lightroom  (to show the full original lens distortion)
3) The original in-camera Jpeg (obviously the distortion corrected by the camera)
I've  drawn straight red lines on to the images to demonstrate the differences.
Any ideas?

P.s i've taken different shots too and the problem is the same for them all (at least at 18mm anyway).
Additional information:
The Nikon D3100 has an APS-C sensor (I'm not sure if that's significant or not). Also the lens described in the profile correction matches the one from my camera.

I've tried using Canon's DPP for the same purpose with TIFF output AND with DPP's highlight recovery. I can't get the same highlight recovery with the TIFF as compared to the raw inside LR with PV2012.

What's wrong with simply changing the Lens Profile 'Amount' settings from 100 if a specific lens profiles is "over-correcting" or "under-correcting? Don't forget most zoom lenses have a "complex" moustache shaped distortion, which is NOT easily corrected with LR's Manual Distortion control. You can certainly try both, but there's no way to save the Manual Distortion "correction" setting to a specific lens profile's defaults.

I've never seen any artifacts caused by the LR Defringe tools (see image posted of Canon 8-15mm Fisheye lens CA), but you do need to be very careful concerning the actually settings used. After using the eyedropper tool to sample a fringe area I fine tune the settings to eliminate desaturation of areas that have similar color as the fringe area. Once you have the correct settings save it to a Develop preset for manual application. For example with my Canon 8-15mm F4L Fisheye zoom I have two (2) Develop presets of 8-12mm (Purple 2, 30/55) and 13-15mm (Purple 4, 30/55). There is no need to use Local controls with Defringe if you follow my suggestions for manually tuning the settings to prevent desaturation in like colored areas. IMHO the LR CA and Defringe tools are darn near perfect when you use them correctly!

  • Sony FE 28-70mm in camera + Lightroom lens correction = double correction or overcorrection?

    Hello,
    I have a Sony A7 with Sony FE 28-70mm kit lens. On the Sony A7, if i select "Shading Compensation" in the camera menu, the camera corrects vignetting in the saved raw file. I have experimented by taking two raw photos, with in camera Shading Compensation turned on and off. I then imported the photos into Lightroom. I then tried turning lens compensation (vignetting) on and off in Lightroom. This confuses me. In the first image (In camera ON and Lightroom correction ON) it looks like vignetting is completely gone. With in camera ON and Lightroom lens correction OFF, there is still clearly remaining vignetting. With in camera OFF and Lightroom ON there is also clearly remaining vignetting
    Can someone tell me what the recommended course of action is? Is the Sony in-camera lens correction worse or better than Lightroom? Neither the in-camera nor Lightroom's correction will correct vignetting completely on their own. Does that mean that the Lightroom correction is supposed to be used in tandem with the in camera correction to achieve full vignetting correction? There is lacking information/documentation of this feature, I have looked at both Sony A7 help guide and Adobes documentation about lens correction without finding any info about this situation.

    "Shading Compensation" is probably saved as metadata tag in the raw file but the raw file data is not corrected.  This metadata is probably used in the included Sony software to automatically correct the raw for "Shading Compensation" but Lightroom probably does NOT use this data.  You will hopefully get a reply from a Sony user.

  • LightRoom Lens Correction ... huge list (of some of which I have never heard!), but still no mention of Zuiko (Olympus) lenses in the drop-down, even in my 4th update: version 5.6. Anyone know why Olympus has been ostracised in this application?

    I am now using a new Nikon, but I still have thousands of images captured with my (very good) Olympus E500, but still frustrated that its lenses do not appear in the drop-down list in the lens correction module ... not even in the latest update, version 5.6

    What camera?  Is it a mirrorless?  Most of those have lens profiles that are built-in and always on so there’s nothing in the list.

  • Lightroom - Lens Correction - Lens Manufactuer unknown

    I have a Canon Rebel XTi and shoot in Raw. I have 3 Tamron lenses - a 10-24, 17-50 and 18-270.
    I thought I'd try out the lens correction profile for my 10-24 for a few pics, but when invoking the option, it was unable to determine the len manufacturer. Though as soon as I selected 'Tamron' it then knew which lens I was using.
    Should my metadata have capture the lens manufactuer?
    Is there something I am missing?
    Given they are all Tamron - can I set some sort of default so I don't have to select Tamron for every picture?

    If you cannot get the right lens profile assigned using the Set Default method described in earlier posts (for example, if two different lenses that you use are identified exactly the same by LR's reading of the image metadata, so that it cannot distinguish them automatically) then it can be helpful to record the manual assignment of a given lens profile, into a Develop preset for easier application to images in the future.
    To reiterate, it is enough that Lr's lens detection operates as a unique identifier, that can cause the particular correction profile to be used which you have stipulated; the actual lens description does not strictly need to be correct for the lens, in order for this to happen automatically, per image, at import or subsequently.
    So a general Develop preset or default which turns on lens corrections just needs to activate the profile checkbox, and in the Profile: selector, show "Default". Then LR uses whatever it has been told is the right default for each Lens ID encountered, which may derive from its originally installed list, or else from what the user has later assigned.
    A specific preset applying a particular lens profile for cases where auto detection doesn't work, will instead apply this explicitly, set as "Manual".
    For example, I use some older, pre-digital Pentax lenses which have no ID chip, and report to LR as just "A series lens" or else "K or M lens" - because all the camera can do, is detect whether or not these older lenses have an auto aperture. So with those, I can use LR to filter them down by focal length (prime lenses), to help me rapidly apply a Develop preset which picks out the correct profile for each individual lens. The camera asks me for the focal length whenver it detects a legacy-mount lens has been fitted, so that it can correctly apply shake reduction, so that info is at least recorded against each image. But: most of the time, I use only one A series lens and only one M series lens, so I have LR set to "presume" the A/28 profile for the former, and the M/135 profile for the latter, unless told otherwise. I only have to intervene as described in the exceptional case, when I know I have used some other lens sharing the same class of legacy mount.
    The same principles apply when third-party lens makers use ambiguous Lens IDs even for modern chipped lenses, where these codes may span across multiple, different lens models indiscriminately.

    Is there a reason why all the micro4/3 lenses (panasonic, Leica and Olympus) are missing as lens corrections in all Lightroom versions?

    They are not missing. 
    Within the last year or two many cameras do their own lens corrections before writing the JPG or even displaying the image on the back of the camera or in the electronic view finder, so Adobe does the same thing:  the lens profiles are built into the camera raw engine and always applied.  It’s confusing because cameras didn’t used to do this and Adobe didn’t used to do this, so we have the situation of older cameras having lens profiles you had to select from the dropdown lists, while newer cameras don’t require this.  Of course removable-lens cameras still have this situation, but many/most recent P&S cameras have built-in lens corrections.
    The Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop actually indicates when a built-in profile is being used, but LR does not, yet.

  • Lens correction in Lightroom not sending to photoshop when making a panorama

    I cannot seem to find anyone else on the forums with this problem....
    I have set the lens correction in Lightroom which does a beautiful job of removing vingetting and lens distortions.
    However, when I go to "edit in"  "Merge as panorama in photoshop", it does not carry forward the lens corection.  The vingetting and all is visible which creates a horrible photoshop panorama.
    I do not want to use photoshop's correction, I want to preserve the lightroom lens correction.
    Am I missing something?
    Any ideas?

  • Is it possible to use automatic lens correction profiles in Camera RAW using Extendscript?

    I have developed Javascripts using Extendscript toolkit to help me process batches of files for creating time lapse videos, and
    I would like to take advantage of the automatic lens correction profiles available in Adobe Camera RAW (I am using Adobe Photoshop CS6 64-bit), but in the CameraRAWOpenOptions, there is no property describing the automatic lens correction profiles.  It seems there has got to be a way to automate the selection of the "Enable Lens Profile Corrections" box when opening camera RAW images.  I am using Canon lenses, and the Adobe lens correction profiles work great, so I'd like to use them.
    I am aware of the other way of doing this in Photoshop using File-->Automate-->Lens Correction, but this seems to work more slowly than using the lens corrections in Camera RAW.

    You don't need to bother...just set your Camera Raw "Defaults" to include Enable Lens Profile Corrections and check the Auto CA correction. Then go to the ACR flyout menu and select Save New Camera Raw Defaults...Note: if you have your ACR preferences set to have seperate defaults based on camera serial number and ISO, you'll need to save out seperate defaults for each camera and ISO you use.

  • Auto Lens Correction?

    Is it really necessary to perform lens correction manually on every image in Lightroom4? I have checked the enable box and also included lens correction in my set up file. It seems to me that when photos are downloaded or even after they are downloaded the lens correction should be automatic across the board, especially since I primarily use only three Canon L lenses for 80% of my shooting. Yet, no matter whatI do, I cannot get the correct lens recognition and adjustment automatically and am forced to do each photo one at a time which is seriously time consuming. Suggestions and solutions would be very much appreciated. And, yes, I have read Adobe set up instructions, etc. but there does not seem to be any description of how to accomplish this. I am using DNG files.

    No, it is not necessary to do this individually.  You can do it automatically in two ways. 
    One is to use a custom camera default.  You turn on "Enable Profile Corrections" for 1 image, then choose Set Default Settings... from the Develop menu.  Then all future images will have the Enable Profile Corrections box enabled by default (and hence profile-based lens corrections).  This is what I do.
    A second way is to use a Develop preset (in which the Enable Profile Corrections box is enabled), and choose that when you Import (in the Import dialog).

  • Lr, Photomerge and Lens Corrections

    I use to apply an import preset to all my photos that just enables the lens corrections. That's my doubt: when I make a pano with Photomerge in CS5 (so I select photos, right click, Edit In, Merge to Panorama in Photoshop..) I have to select or not the "Vignette removal" and "Geometric Distortion Correction" features? Photomerge takes count on the adjustments made in Lr? I've the doubt because in the source files list are elencated .CR2 files, not TIFF/PSD..
    I made some tries:
    1. Lens corrections in Lr/Lens corrections in Photomerge
    2. Lens corrections in Lr
    3. Lens corrections in Photomerge
    Try 1 is a little bit stretched compared to tries 2 and 3.
    Tries 2 and 3 aren't totally identical. They not match 100% even if are almost equivalent.
    What do you do guys when it comes to panos and lens corrections? Thanks

    I think I'll make all the adjustments in Lightroom, lens correction too and leave the two options in Photomerge blank. I don't know why there are little differences between the lens corrections in Photomerge and Lightroom, I thought it's the same module, but that's it..

  • Lens correction feature completely missing from Develop Module

    The lens correction feature has gone missing from the Development Module.  It was missing before I upgraded to 5.6 and is still missing.  Previously, it was present, so I am wondering if I did anything to hide or remove it?

    Right-click on one of the other section headings, such as Tone Curve, Basic, etc. Make sure there is a checkmark in lens corrections. This is how you control which develop features you want displayed on your system. Sometimes features disappear mysteriously.

  • Lens Correction Information

    The lightroom lens correction information for my Canon 100-400L and 15-85 has disappeared. It was there last week, now its gone. Only changes I have made is I adjusted the micro focusing adjustments to the focal plane in the 7D camera on both of them. Since then, both  lenses information in lightroom has disappeared even though the correct info shows iin lightroom on my screen in the file info displayed.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Always RAW. I never work with jpegs for the most part.  I can pull up RAW files from a few days ago off of the same CF card/camera and they work and show all info.  All files generated since then will not show any options to pick Canon and there are only a few lenses available, maybe 10-15 or so. You can click on "Auto" and then click on Canon and scroll the lists and neither the 100-400L or the 15-85 show as an option on the latest RAW files I view, but the do show on RAW files prior to a few days ago. Also,  I have viewed metadata and it shows Canon 100-400L in lightroom.

    Your camera will only apply lens correction (if switched on) to JPEGs, not to RAW files. Clearly you do not want to apply it twice.

    Are you shooting RAW or JPG or some of both?
    When you say it won't let you change it, does that mean there are no lens profiles at all, or no lens profiles that match your lens? If you set Auto or Default you can select any lens you want from the list of manufacturers and profiles and then the Setup says Custom.  Of course this lens may not be the correct lens, but saying you cannot change it suggests there are no manufacturers or lenses listed on the dropdowns.
    Most lens profiles are for RAW only, so if you shoot a mixture of RAW and JPG then for the JPGs the lens profile may not exist.  If you are enabling Lens Profiles and have Auto or Default set and it chooses the wrong one then it may just be choosing the top one in the list for Canon if the specific profile doesn't exist for JPGs.
    If you are shooting raw and the profile does exist then you should be able to correct the situation:  In the list select the correct profile, then choose Setup:  Save New Lens Profile Defaults, and select Default from the Setup instead of Auto and it should pick the correct lens every time.  Assuming it does do that, then you can set Enable Lens Profiles = checked and Setup: Default and set those as your new Lightroom Defaults and it should pick the right lens.
    If you are shooting JPG then the lens profile may well not exist and there's nothing you can do about that except not shoot JPG.  If you feel like it you can hack a raw profile to be a jpg profile and put that hacked copy in the user-lens-profile area and LR will see it.

  • Manual Lens Correction in Lightroom 4

    The Manual Lens Correction sliders in Lightroom 4 seem completely useless. They aren't working the same as they do in Lightroom 3. Instead of being able to fix keystoning of images, now the horizontal and vertical sliders just stretch or distort photos. Is this a bug? If not, is it possible to go back to the functionality from LR3? If this isn't possible, I'm probably going to switch back to Lightroom 3, since this is one of the program's most useful features.

Which is totally correct IMHO (and hasn't changed since LR3).
    P.S. I don't know which angle of view LR assumes for photos w/o information about focal length and sensor size (probably 50mm focal length and 35 mm film format ("full format") sensor.
