My login.keychain keeps disappearing...Help!

Tough one here I think...
My login.keychain keeps disappearing. Has done about 6 times in the last two days. It takes all my passwords and preferences with it. Every time I repair or replace the keychain it acts fine for a while. The I launch an application that looks up a password and it happens again.
I need help for my sanity. %P
Jazqas

Hi, Jazqas.
1. Do you mean the file is actually gone, or is it that apps keep requesting access to the keychain?
2. Files that go missing unexpectedly can indicate a corrupted disk directory. As a general checkup, I suggest you run the procedure outlined in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
3. Have you been using the Reset Safari function of Safari? Do not use "Reset Safari" unless you are prepared to lose all Internet passwords saved in your keychain.
"Reset Safari" is primarily intended for clearing personal information that may have been saved while using a public Internet terminal running Safari. While it can be used as a Safari troubleshooting action of last resort, it was not designed with that intent and one should backup their keychain first. See the AppleCare Knowledge Base document “Safari 2.0 Help: Resetting Safari.” Unfortunately, Reset Safari cannot be undone.
Good luck!

  • Login keychain keeps disappearing from Keychain Access Utility

I'm running OSX 10.8.3 on a mid 2009 MacBook Pro, and having several problems with passwords and perhaps permissions.
There are two users on this computer, one for me and one for my wife.  Mine was set up long before hers, but she uses it more because I use a newer Mac now.
On her account, everything seems to function normally.  It's my account that is causing problems.
For example, mail can't remember my passwords. I have gmail (and others) configured in Mail, and when I go to check the account settings, everything is right except the password space is blank.  When I start mail, it prompts for the passwords for each of the mail accounts, I enter it, and it prompts again, endlessly.
Also, I can't log in to iCloud from that computer, although I can login from my browser on the same Pro, and from my iPhone and from my MacAirbook using the same account and password.  (This may or may not be related - I don't know.)
When I open KeyChain Access, the upper left panel shows only two Keychains - System and System Roots.
I tried File/Add Keychain and pointed to the login.keychain in home/library/keychains. The login keychain shows up in the upper left panel, and the passwords for all my previously added logins all show up when I click on the login keychain in the upper left panel and then click on the passwords category in the lower left panel of Keychain Access.
But when I quit keychain access and restart it, or when I restart the computer and go back to keychain access, the login keychain has again disappeared again.
I have tried keychain "verify" and "repair" but verify says everything is OK,  no problems, and so repair doesn't fix anything. It checks the login.keychain and says there are no problems.
    Any suggestions?

OK, I spoke too soon. It's ALMOST fixed, but there's still one niggling litte problem.
When I start up my computer, it first asks me to log in (as it should).
Then, after it begins to load everything, the following message pops up.
"Mac OS wants to use the "myname logins" keychain. Please enter the keychain password"
I enter it and that's the end of the problem until the next time I start up the computer. This is a huge improvement to what it was previously doing, but I'd like to fix that, too.
I am wondering if it's related to a problem with the configuration of my login keychains.
When I open KeyChain Access, it shows 2 login keychains, one called "login" and the other "myname logins" (I added the second one to solve the problem at the beginning of this topic - April 22 above).
The one OS X asks for is myname logins.
Myname logins contains passwords for my LAN, but nothing for the airport itself.
The "Login" keychain contains passwords for my airport/time capsule.  But there are 8 different entries for it, 4 of them with the same "Date modified" and 4 more with a second "Date modified".
This login keychain also contains many obsolete entries for ISPs I no longer use, and for routers I used once or twice in clients' offices several years ago.
    So, 5 questions.
Can I remove all these obsolete keychain items?
Can I remove some of the duplicate items?
Should I consolidate these to one keychain or should I leave them separate?
If I should consolidate them, how do I do it?
Will consolidating them solve my problem with OS X asking for my keychain login password when my configuration is loading?
    Thanks.

  • Very weird. My login.keychain keeps running away...

I am about to throw my iBook off my balcony and buy a PC.
My login.keychain keeps disappearing. I don't know why.
When I open the keychain it appears as a grey square instead of a padlock (system ones are fine). So I have 5 times repaired it. Which fixes the problem but not for long. Sometimes I will open an application (last time was Microsoft Messenger) and all of a sudden my dock will lose its prefs and stop hiding and my exposé corners stop working.
If I log out, other trouble happens (locale info, bookmarks, iTunes library, etc. go missing).
I know my passwords are lost, I just want to stop this from happening again.
    Anyone?

  • Since upgrading to 10.7.2 to use iCloud, i keep getting a message with ubd wants to use the login keychain, anyone for help to how to get rid of this...

since upgrading to 10.7.2 to use iCloud, i keep getting a window message with ubd wants to use the login keychain, i put the right password but it keeps coming back, anyone for help to how to get rid of this...

This is what I did and it seems to have worked so far. While that little annoying box is up you need to open the Keychain access by:
going to applications -> open utilities folder -> click to open Keychain Access
Now here is the stupid part, you have to continue to press the cancel button on the "ubd wants to use login keychain" box for the kaychain window to open. Once you have keychain access open go to:
the top of your monitor and select "Keychain Access" right next to the little apple logo -> click preferences in the options panel-> the preference box will open now -> click "Reset My Default Keychain" -> another box will pop up that says "Please enter your login password. This password will be used to create your new keychain" (of course this is assuming that you use a login password to access your mac) -> enter your login password and a box shows up that says "created a new empty 'Login' keychain"
After that you should be good to go. This new keychain you created with your login password overides the old keychain. The old keychain is still available in the Keychain's folder but is not being used and therefor can be deleted. All you have to do now is press ok, and your good. If the "ubd wants to use login keychain" box is still there after you reset your keychains just hit cancel and it should be gone for good or you can enter your login password.
Is this a fixall that will work forever? I have no idea but doing this has allowed me to access my network at work and all the servers I need to get to.
Oh and one more thing. You may need to press cancel on the ubd box throughout this entire process, I just gon in the habit of clicking a button hitting cancel on the ubd box and the new window would pop up.
I hope this helps you! Sorry if it's long, I was trying to be as detailed as possible to make it  easier. Let me know how it goes.

  • Added keychain keeps disappearing

    Hello!
I've created a new keychain in the Keychain Access. Every time I open KA I have to manually do file>add keychain> and select this other keychain. Then it appears in the sidebar, but the next time I start the app, I have to add it again.
This keychain is not a default one and it is stored in my Keychains folder.
Is this a bug, or is there a way to keep a keychain in the sidebar? I haven't found one.
    Thanks in advance

  • PS CS 4 my extract filter keeps disappearing - help?

I'm using Photoshop CS 4 for OS X, and a fortnight ago I d/l the goodies that contained the extract filter, and although the extract filter stayed in place (in my filters) for a time (a short time), after which it has now disappeared. I don't want to have to keep going back to my desktop, choosing "goodies, etc" and replacing the extract filter - now the correct d/l file that I have on my desktop is grayed out - it's PHSPCS4...t_ls1.dmg - so I was only able to select it in Photoshop > Preferences > Plug Ins only 1 time and no longer after that one time (in order to replace it after it has disappeared from my Filters.)
And when I finally do get that extract back (which I need help with in getting it back as I've been unable to do - see above), how do I make it stay put in my filters for as long as I have my photoshop installed on my computer?
    Thanks in advance.

What Christoph is trying to tell you is that you actually need to mount that disk image by double clicking on the icon of the dmg file.  The contents of the disk image is what you need to install, not the dmg file itself.
Thank you so much! I could not understand what Chris meant about that dmg file. I took your advice and double clicked on the icon of the dmg file, trying to install the extract plus filter, but I got this message (see screenshot)
Next, I tried to open the dmg file > English > goodies > filters, but they're still grayed out (see screenshot)
Having got my first MacBook Pro in July of 2009, I am still a fairly new, first-time mac user. So you guys may have to spell things out for me, please?

  • Login keychain keeps updating without my control

Hello. I'm hoping someone can help, because this is starting to annoy me. I upgraded to Mavericks when it came out, and followed whatever on-screen prompts came up during installation to set up iCloud. I don't really use iCloud for anything, but I wanted to do everything to the tee. I inadvertently set up iCloud keychain, and then decided that I would rather my passwords, however encrypted, not be on a server somewhere. I don't actually have any devices to sync to. I turned off iCloud keychain. I then deleted a few login entries in keychain and later noticed in Safari there was a prompt on those websites asking for permission to auto-fill my password. I checked the keychain and those entries were back. I deleted them again. This happened 2 or 3 more times before I caught on that something was syncing behind my back. I read online about deleting stuff from Apple servers, and I did that. I re-ticked iCloud Keychain again, and went in Account Details > Allowing Approving... and unchecked that, and then disabled iCloud, and when it asked if I want to delete from this Mac, I said yes. All well and good, except after deleting those entries again, they came back again. Thinking my entire keychain must be cursed, I deleted the whole thing, and sure enough, after about a few hours all of my entries are back, and all auto-fill password are a-go. I want this to stop, I want to systematically delete every scrap of information so that no syncing continues without my control. I want this snapshot of my keychain from the past to die.

  • Safari Mac Toolbar keeps disappearing - help!

Each time I start Safari, the toolbar is missing and I have to go into the VIEW menu and turn it back on. Each time a new window pops up, same thing.
I have tried ensuring that all windows have the toolbar before closing it down, but this has not helped.
This just started about two weeks ago.
Anyone have some ideas? I had installed nothing new.

    HI,
It helps us to help you if you provide which Mac OS X you are running on your Mac. Please click My Settings on the right side of this page and complete your forum profile. Thanks!
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
And make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.
You posted in the Snow Leopard forum here so.. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10747395#10747395 read the following.
If you are running Safari in 64 bit mode, try running in 32-bit mode instead. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode.

  • Safari login keychain box keeps popping up - how to stop?

Please excuse this rookie question, but we recently bought an IMac. The Safari login keychain box keeps popping up and after clicking on cancel, it comes up again and after clicking on cancel again it goes away for a while, then comes back later and does the same thing. How to stop?

    OS x 10.5 Lion or 10.9 Mavericks?
    OS X 10.9 Mavericks
    “Local Items” keychain prompt?
    This may help.

I tend to make my playlists right on my ipod. This did not happen for the last 2 years. Just started recently. Did get a new computer recently.

That is because you got a new computer. You can only sync all media from one syncing computer. You can sync from any computer to iPod using the manual method but that does not sync from iPod to computer.
To make this your syncing computer:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities

I am doing a cover for O.M.G. by usher and it requires 4 to 5 different vocal layers. My first "line" of vocals keeps disappearing even after i save it. So I have to redo everything on the top line. Any help?

For what it's worth, you posted this in 2011, and here in 2014 I am still having this same issue. Over the last two days, I have had to unlock my apple account 8 times. I didn't get any new devices. I haven't initiated a password reset. I didn't forget my password. I set up two factor authentication and have been able to do the unlocking with the key and using a code sent to one of my devices.
    That all works.
It's this having to unlock my account every time I go to use any of my devices. And I have many: iMac, iPad, iPad2, iPad mini, iPhone 5s, iPod touch (daughter), and my old iPhone 4 being used as an ipod touch now.  They are all synced, and all was working just fine.
I have initiated an incident with Apple (again) but I know they are just going to suggest I change my Apple ID. It's a simple one, and one that I am sure others think is theirs. I don't want to change it. I shouldn't have to. Apple should be able to tell me who is trying to use it, or at least from where.
    Thanks for listening,
    Melissa
