My LR catalog is corrupt.

I've recently gone from pc to mac.  I've imported photos from pc/elements 9 to mac/LR4.  I'm in the process of getting the photos organized in LR4 when I got a message that my catalog was corrupt.  When trying to repair I got a message that the catalog can not be repaired.  I have not backed up my catalog.
It shows that my photos are on Macintosh HD / Users / bateson / Pictures / SteveLightroom4Pictures.  Is there a way to fix or redo the catalog?  Or do I need to start over and rebuild a new catalog by re-importing all the files to a new catalog?  It has taken me a month to import and reorganized from elements 9.

I suspect this goes without saying now, but consider backing up the catalog after every time-consuming round of edits.
Dan Tull of Adobe used to fix catalogs, but dunno if he still does.

  • Lightroom 5 Catalog is corrupt

My wife uses Lightroom 5 for all of her business photo editing.  Yesterday she downloaded the update.  Once installed she got the message that the catalog was corrupt and needed repair.  No matter how many times you click repair, it does not repair it.  We went through all of the FAQs and Troubleshooting online with no successful outcomes.   I even went so far as to uninstall and reinstall the program but get the same message or a message that we need to select a different catalog.  There is no other catalog.  What do we need to do?  After paying the amount of money for the program, some tech assistance would be nice.

I can't find any back ups on the system.

  • Version 10:Cannot open a catalog...the catalog is corrupt or a previous version

I am currently using Adobe Photo Elements 10: I attampt to open a catalog and the software responds that the catalog is corrupt or a previous version that cannot be opened.  I have only one verions installed so obviously the latter would not be the case.  I attempt to repair the catalop and the software indicates that the catalog is not corrupt.  Since I do not have a previous verions and the catalog is not corrupt, how can I recover from this eventhough I do not have a backup of this catalog.  Is there anyway I could fix this catalog and if so how?  please Help.

    FCSDixon,
Is this a converted catalog from previous versions? If yes, you would need to repair your old catalog in old version and then re-convert.
Let me know if that works out for you.

  • Upgraded to LR5 and my catalogs became corrupt...

I just upgraded all my catalogs to LR5, and within 1 week, 3 out of 4 of them are corrupt and will not open. Is this happening to anyone else? I thought it was just bad luck, but 3 out of 4 is not coincidence.
Background: I've been using these catalogs for years, starting in LR2. They are currently stored on a RAID external hard drive. I've never had a catalog become corrupt before this upgrade to LR5. My external hard drive appears to be functioning properly.
    Thanks,
    Will

The original catalogs should still be in place. Get rid of the corrupted catalogs that you updated/upgraded, and try to convert them again. If that doesn't work then I would be suspicious that something is not right with your hardware. Catalog conversion has always been completely straightforward in my experience.

  • My LR 5 catalog keep corrupting images.  Is anyone else having this problem?

I have a new hard drive but my pictures are stored on an external drive.  When I open Lightroom 5...with the upgrades done...some of my images get corrupted.  I don't know if it's my graphics card or something wrong with the new hard drive.  Any answers?

I went back to Photoshop CC2014 to check on the bad images in LR5.  What I
found is that the original image is fine but there is no records of
8566-2-2.CR2 in my hard folder on disk.  The image 8566.CR2 is there.  I'm
really confused by all this.  It does appear to be a Lightroom issue but I
don't know why.  It does it sometimes but not all the time.  I just
downloaded a shoot from today.  I was nervous about bringing the images in
in LR but I did use a card reader instead of the onboard reader on my PC.
Now not sure if the onboard reader may be causing the problem.  I just
didn't want to lose these images so tried the portable card reader.

  • My cataloge won't open, says it is corrupt and repair won't work and I can't access anything.

Don't know what happened. Closed Lightroom after working on photos and now it won't open again. I get a pop up saying the cataloge is corrupt and when I try to repair, it won't work. The AdobeTech note comes up as an error page. I desperately need to open it as all of my recent vacation photos are on it and only half finished. Supposed to be showing them at a party this weekend.

If you save (xmp) metadata as you go, then you never have to redo editing work when falling to backup catalog (just sayin'..).
PS - all develop settings and almost all metadata will be in xmp if saved, but not everything from catalog is contained in xmp (and not everything in Lightroom is contained in your catalog!).

  • Corrupt Lightroom Catalog

I was recently working on a Lightroom 4 catalog that was saved on a G-Drive when the hard drive failed. I was able to recover the catalog using data recovery software, but now when I try to open it, Lightroom says it's unable to open due to an unexpected error. I've tried renaming the catalog, importing from a new catalogue, and opening various ways, but nothing works. The catalog seems corrupt. Help! Is there any way to recover the catalog?

The message you are getting could be caused by the presence of the so-called lock-file. The purpose of the lock file is to prevent that a catalog file can be opened twice at the same time.
Therefore it should be present when a catalog has been opened with/by Lr. But the lock-file should be deleted (automatically) when the catalog has been closed by Lr. It happens sometimes that on closing of a catalog, the lock-file is not deleted, particularly when Lr does not close down but is interrupted by a crash or hardware failure. The lock-file then prevents any further opening of this catalog and Lr sends the message you are getting.
With Lr closed check in Mac Finder / Win Explorer if you can find a lock-file. The lock file sits directly besides (i.e. in the same folder) the catalog file in question.
The catalog is a file with the extension <  .lrcat>; the lock-file has the extension <  .lrcat.lock>
If - for instance - you have a catalog file named <123xyz.lrcat>, the lock-file would have the name <123xyz.lrcat.lock>.
If, while Lr is closed, you see a lock-file, delete it, i.e. send it to the Trash Can / Recycle Bin.

    Hi,
thank you for your reply, help and sympathy, the forums really saved my
last days, I was so depressed by this problem and reading about it helped
me to find ways to try to solve the problem.
I feel so stupid about my catalg, really! I believed the XMP sidecar file
was automatically created but I was wrong, I also believed the
modifications were stored somewhere but I was wrong again... all my
countless hours of creative work on my photos is stored in a.... SQLite DB
!!!! I still can't believe it I was so ignorant about the consequence of a
simple power failure or improper shutdown.
My backup is old, I need to recover more recent work,
The XMP sidecar file was NOT active by default and I never cared about it:
    STUPID ME.
I'm trying to repair the DB by myself while waiting for an answer by Dan
Tull, it's a SQLite DB in the end.... (I'm working on a copy obviously)
I've managed to open it in LR right now but all the last 500 photos
entries seems damaged, I'm still working on it.... my DB is 380MB circa...
    btw
    a) just before the failure, I put the catalog on a brand new USB, 500GB
drive (from an old 250GB usb drive) and I've opened it on a not updated
computer (early version of windows XP - never got problems with the old
drive) I fear it doesn't support 500GB filesystems but I'm not sure and
I'll really NEVER attach the disk to this computer again so it will be
hard to investigate. I've no such problem with this drive doing anything
    else with my laptop.
    b) I'm absolutely sure of it!! because of a severe earthquake in my city
    the last 6 of April
    (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/04/the_laquila_earthquake.html),
I've to work on a laptop, my desktop is in a box in a garage and I really
don't know when my house will be completely repaired and I'll back using a
desktop computer; because of this I'm on DEATH SLOW USB drives and you can
imagine what it means to backup 300GB of photos daily or weekly (9-10
hours), btw I think I'll backup my 380MB catalog at every LR start from
    now.
Do you know a way to create the XMP of all the mofications from an
existing catalog? Will it be enough to create a complete catalog?
    Thank you very much.
    Pat
You have my sympathy! I am constantly in fear of losing my work due to a
software or hardware problem. There are so many things that can go wrong
and we are photographers first, not computer operations people.

Did you try the ideas listed in the thread you referenced: restoring from
a backup or making a new catalog from the adjustments and metadata stored
in the XMP information in the pictures? If neither of those work then a
manual repair of the catalog by an expert is the last option. That would
be hard for me as my catalog is over 1GB.

Once you have recovered your stuff I suggest you look at a) why it
happened. For example do you need a new hard drive?  and b) a better
backup plan so if disaster strikes you can restore easily and without
    stress.

    Good luck.

  • Corrupt catalog cannot be repaired

Lightroom Catalog corrupt. Can't be repaired.
I was uploading a photo shoot to Lightroom 2.7.  A few minutes in, I got the following message:
Lightroom encountered an error and needs to quit. There was a problem reading one of the Lightroom catalogs.
I quit and started again but received the following:
The last time Lightroom ran, it shut down prematurely due to a problem reading the catalog. Lightroom must now check the catalog before proceeding After checking the integrity of the catalog, I got the following message:
The Lightroom catalog "Lightroom Catalog" is corrupt and cannot be used or backed up until it is repaired.  I clicked on REPAIR CATALOG. It looked like it was being checked/repaired but then I got the following message:
The catalog "Lightroom Catalog" is corrupt and cannot be repaired at this time.
I have been able to use a backup version of my catalog which is on my computer hard drive, but the catalog on my portable hard drive is the corrupt one.  Why is that one corrupt, not both and how do I fix the corrupt one?
    Please, please help.

the exact same thing happened to me but I don't have a backup catalog, Please please help.

  • Corrupted LR5 Catalog - help with SQLITE

Hi, I use LR5 on OSX and my catalog got corrupted when the hard drive filled up. As it turns out, backups stopped in April for some reason.
Techniques I've tried so far include:
    1) look for back-ups
    2) copy to a new location and use that file
    3) import into a new file
    4) have Lightroom repair it
    5) restart the system....
I have been through the forums and it seems the only thing that seems to have a hope of succeeding is a SQLITE software to extract the data from the .lrcat file and to produce a new one with it. Unfortunately the little software is not very user friendly and I get about as far as "syntax error".
Does any one here have any experience with these things? Please let me know if you have any further ideas.
    Regards,
    Wolfgang

    Hi Rob,
Thank you for getting me this far. It's taken for ever, but I am now the proud owner of a new .lrcat catalog.
However, Lightroom does not recognise it as valid and does not open it.
I am lost again and need some more ideas here. I hope its some minor formality or so.
