My luck + an Ipod = Absolute Disaster

Alright, so i have had an Ipod for over a year and a half now, and sine about three months into it, the Ipod began breaking down. It would do the whole "Sad Ipod" icon, i'd go through every single step there was, have to send it in, and they would send me back a refurbished one.
This process went one about once every couple months, and that was okay, because i had the Applecare plan on it. Well, that ran out in April, and as reliable as the changing of the seasons, the Ipod is broken AGAIN.
The process of complete meltdown goes as follows:
Ian is listening to Ipod
Ipod freezes (can be up to hours) until Ian decides to reset it.
It resets, and turns back on with the Sad Face icon
Ian trys the reset process, disk mode and plugs the Ipod into computer, computer doesn't recognize Ipod, Ipod screen flips back to Apple logo, then goes back to the Sad Face.
this has never varied for me, and this would normally be the point where i take the Ipod to the store, they would tell me that "i should not illegally download anything" or "it's because i have the Ipod skin, and it affects the Ipod negatively" or "your Ipod is corrupt", etc.
The truth is, like i said, this hapens every few months, and i have friends that have downloaded THOUSANDS of songs, and there Ipods work just fine. I handle my computer and Ipod with the utmost care and safety, and have plenty of intelligence with computers.
But honestly, what is the effing problem?
I was planning on buying my first Mac in less than a month, but if it's goign to put me through the same problems as this Ipod, my commitment to Apple is beginning to go awry.
Any help with this epic trainwreck of mine? That would make my day.

sounds like a bad battery or one that isnt charging
correctly.
have you tried charging on the wall plug?
an ipod will only trickle charge if you leave it
mounted on a usb port You have to un-mount it to get
a full charge (or wait like a month)
try that
heh, as grateful as i am that someone finally posted a comment!...i have already been through that many a time. when i plug the Ipod in, what it does is start up with the Apple screen, take a little bit, then go back to the Sad Ipod face. Then it will shut off, and repeat the process over, and over, and overrrrr again. This goes on for as long as i feel like leaving it plugged in.
So thanks for the attempt!...but this question is still unsolved.

  • I have just recieved a brand new ipod touch 8GB, it wont turn on and it wont either charge or recognise connection through ITunes. I have tried the hold down home and the power button together but no luck. Its absolutely dead, any ideas please ????

I have just received a brand new IPOD Touch ,it will not turn on, i have connected it to my cmputer, it does not show that its charging and is not recognised in Itunes. I have tried the holding down the power and home buttons which also didnt work. Any Ideas Please ????

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If you backed up the iPod before restoring it then restore from that backup. See the restore topic of:

Also, if yoo have that backup you can extract the photos by:

the other day i purchased 3 applications for my ipod touch. After I synched the ipod 1 app was working fine, 1 the app was on the ipod but would not work, and the last didn't synch at all. I have gone to the website and did everything they told me to do and then some and i am getiing more and more frustrated. Now they are trying to charge me for 2 apps that i dont have and i refuse to pay for then since not working

    - What are the specific app? Maybe they are not compatible? Have you tried deleting the ones that do not work? See the following for how to do that without being charged again:

    - You can also report the problem to APP/iTunes. First I would try going to the developer's website. That may have information.

  • IMovie is still crashing?  This is an absolute disaster... I am really disappointed with Apple!!!

I've seen the post about the library files to attempt to delete on old versions of iMovie, but I have the newest version.
I seen the post about the corruption of iMovie files from certain titles... especially "organic main".  But I could not export my movie (1min 30 secs) before I added any titles...
I think it might be the "dream" feature that I've added to the photos, but I don't have enough time inside iMovie before the crashes to change.
I can't believe that Apple hasn't done more to fix this in the brand new version.  As a life-long apple user (since the commodore 64) I am very disappointed.
Does Apple care that a signiture app is garbage?!?

Apple didn't make the Commodore 64.

  • Yosemite upgrade an absolute disaster

    I upgraded to 10.10.1 on 11/20/14
I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro with 2.2 GHZ  I7 processor with 8G of ram.
Since upgrading, my machine is extremely slow.  Example: I opened my application folder and after nearly a minute a third of the icons for the apps were still missing (or not showing) this used to be instantaneous.  Programs that took one 1,5 minutes to load and be functional is taking 4 to 5 minutes to be functional.
Have the same issue on my IMAC.
    Extremely disappointed.

How full is your Mac's hard drive?
If you have a long list of user login/startup items that launch at startup/login, you need to reduce the amount of these to around 6 or so items or less, if possible.
Do you have any unnecessary antivirus installed on your iMac?
Do you have any "garbageware" so-called hard drive "cleaning" apps installed on your iMac like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac 1OR 2, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse or anything else like it installed on your Mac?
Have you updated all of your installed software and updated all connected third party device software and drivers?
Have you updated all of the various web browser plugins you that have installed within your web browser?
Do you use Google apps, like Chrome and Drive?

  • Library file corrupted and absolute chaos in my itunes folder

    Hi,
Is there any way to retrieve the library folder that contains all the info for the playlists?
I just bought a macbook pro with yosemite from June 2014 and wanted to sync my itunes library. I had all on an external hard drive and then hit absolute disaster:
Itunes 12 won't recognise an old library file from itunes 9.2.1.
So from the previous libraries folder I dragged the file into the itunes folder, renamed it, opened 12 but none of my playlists showed up and none of my over 12000 podcasts either.
    Only purchased songs were visible.
I finally realised that 9.2.1 works in yosemite when opened from the external hard drive. I assigned the itunes folder and presto everything showed up.
But then I made the huge mistake of opening in itunes 12 again and for some reason it resorted all the files in an impossible way. It created a folder for every podcast edition and then chucked a hole lot of mp3s into the trash. The itunes folder is now utterly unrecognisable and the library file won't open in 9.2.1 any more. The library files from previous library folder do not work in 9.2.1 either any more, it's a mess and took me previously months to create the right order.
I had also reduced the podcasts in file size to fit them all onto my ipod classic and now it's all gone.
Is there any way at all that I can retrieve the library file from my ipod to re-create the order that I had?

i just migrated all my mp3's over to a new computer. installed the latest version of itunes 6.
when you open itunes on a 'clean' install, there are no songs in your library folder.
so what i did was copied 5 gigs of songs into the default itunes folder into "my documents/my music/itunes/itunes music" folder. to be honest, your 'music' folder can be on any local drive on your machine. i just put mine where i can access it quicker than a networked drive or itunes sharing from another computer.
then in the 'file' column, i did "add folder to my library" to load the songs into the library. after about 15 minutes, itunes had all 5 gigs of my songs. i'm listening to my itunes as we speak.
    good luck.
btw- if it doesnt do it the first time.
un-install itunes, re-start, install itunes, re-start, then do the above...

  • IOS7 Disaster for Music Collectors

I just installed iOS 7 on my iPhone and began playing around. I’m sure most of the reaction to it in the coming days will focus on the look and feel. But the first thing I noticed is that the Music app is an absolute disaster for people who like music. If your music collection consists of a dozen Greatest Hits albums you bought in college, you’ll probably be fine. Anyone else should stay as far away as possible.
Here’s the first problem: The “Artist” and “Album” views display large thumbnails of album art, which means only four entries are visible per screen. OK, there’s a hint of a fifth if you look closely
Like I said: Fine if you have a dozen or so albums in your collection. I have about 1,500 artists and 7,200 albums and over 100,000 songs. Scrolling through them just got much, much more difficult. Thanks, Apple!
The second problem is worse. When you tap on an artist, the app takes you to all that artist’s albums (good) … but each album is expanded to show the songs it contains:
So in order to scroll through an artist’s albums, you have to scroll past every song in every album. Again, not a problem for tiny music collections. But if you have several albums by a given artist, it quickly becomes annoying. It took me seven thumb-swipes to scroll through the 21 albums by Radiohead in my collection. The 500+ Pearl Jam albums? COMPLETELY UN-browsable.
Speaking of which: It took a whopping 22 seconds from tapping on “Pearl Jam” to getting a list of Pearl Jam albums. That’s 22 seconds of the iPhone just sitting there, seemingly unresponsive. And that’s on an iPhone 5. Now, I have more than 500 Pearl Jam albums; that’s obviously not typical. But there’s a noticeable, if slight, lag when tapping on an artist with 15 or 20 albums. And, of course, the artists whose work you have the most of are the very artists you’re going to select most frequently, so those lags aren’t going to be an occasional thing. Not to mention I spent the better part of a YEAR organizing my music for itunes, and with a click of a button you change it all up.
All of this adds up to a Music app that is absolutely horrible for people who like music. Just a terrible user experience.
What’s really stunning about this is that a lot of people came to the Apple world via the iPod and iTunes. I’m one of them. And over the last few years, Apple has steadily been making the user experience more and more miserable for people who like music. iTunes is a bloated, glitchy, terrible trainwreck of a program that -- when it works at all -- seems to make it harder to do what you want with your music with each new update. Mobile device hard drive space has stagnated at a level too small to house large collections. And the Music app in iOS 7 is the clearest indication yet that Apple just does not give a **** about people who have more than a couple hundred songs in their library. Which is bizarre, given that selling music is a pretty big part of Apple’s business.
It seems increasingly obvious than what will end up driving me away is the escalating awfulness of Apple’s music apps on both OS X and iOS.
UPDATE: I’ve tried several third-party music apps looking for a replacement for Apple’s built-in app. Thanks to everyone who suggested alternatives in the comments and on Twitter … none of which were quite right. But I may have finally found something that will work: Audyssey.
Audyssey is marketed primarily as providing “professional audio technologies to optimize your music for your headphones” -- you can tell the app what headphones you’re using, and it will optimize audio playback to fit them. I haven’t spent any time playing around with that feature, so I can’t comment on its efficacy. But as a way of browsing and playing my iPhone’s music library, it’s far better than Apple’s app. Browsing by artist displays 10 artists per screen, more than twice as many as you see in the Apple app:
Browsing by Album shows 8 albums per screen, again more than twice as many as you get in the Apple app. Selecting an Artist containing 20-25 albums results in no noticeable lag. (There is about a 2-3 second lag when I select Bruce Springsteen, which is mildly irritating, but far better than the 22 seconds Apple’s own app requires to bring up a list of albums.) Most importantly: Once you select an artist, you get a list of albums by that artist -- and only the albums, not every song each album contains. This allows you to easily browse through artists for whom you may have large collections. Want to see what songs are on an album? Just tap the album name, and you’ll go to a new screen. Perfect. Simple. Exactly the way things should work.
Audyssey gives you immediate access to all of the songs on your iPhone (including iTunes Match files that are stored in the cloud but not locally), with all the basic controls -- play/pause/repeat/shuffle/forward/back/etc. Album art & basic controls appear on your phone’s lock screen when appropriate. You have full access to your iTunes playlists. If there’s a way to add songs to playlists or create playlists within the app, I haven’t found it. That doesn’t bother me at all -- I rarely if ever create playlists on my mobile devices.
The one flaw that I’ve encountered is that if a song is in the cloud but not stored on the device itself, Audyssey can stream the song -- but can’t do so in the background, so if you close the app while such a song is playing, it will pause. That’s annoying, but won’t affect you at all unless you use iTunes Match. And if you’re planning on listening to several songs that are stored in the iTunes Match cloud (a whole album or playlist, for example) you can always use the built-in Apple Music app to download the songs first, then play them in Audyssey. Or, of course, you could just play them in the Apple app -- Audyssey is fine as a music player, but then so is the Apple app. Where Audyssey really shines is in browsing your library. I’ve only been playing with it for a few minutes, so it may turn out to be buggy (its responsiveness even when browsing a pretty large library is a good sign on that front) or to have some drawback I haven’t yet encountered, but for now it will be my default music player.
Another problem in the new IOS 7 music app: Once you select an artist, that artist’s albums are not sorted alphabetically. They’re sorted, as best as I can tell, by release date. So if you have, say, 20 Rolling Stones albums and want to listen to Some Girls, not only do you have to scroll through every song contained on every album that is listed before Some Girls before you get to the album you want, but you also can’t speed the process along by swiping as quickly as you can until you get to albums beginning with “S.”
Instead, you have to remember that Some Girls came out in 1978, so it’s between It’s Only Rock n Roll (1974) and Emotional Rescue (1980). Unless of course you have something from Black and Blue (1976), which you probably don’t -- but, really, who can remember? So, yeah, Some Girls will be listed after It’s Only Rock n Roll, and 3-4 albums after Sticky Fingers (1971). Right where you’d expect it -- assuming, of course, that you happen to remember the chronology of album releases by every artist in your entire music library.
Unless, that is, you don’t have release date included for every song and every album in your library (and who does?) in which case the album you’re looking for is … who the **** knows, really?
Oh, and the whole chronological order thing only works if all your albums have release-date metadata (unlikely) and if the release date metadata reflects the album’s original release date For example: Let It Bleed was originally released in 1969, but on my phone the Music app lists it after Flashpoint (originally released in 1991) because my copy of Let It Bleed is apparently a re-issue from 2005. And Flashpoint is listed after Stripped, originally released in 1995, for similar reasons. And so on. As a result, the albums are listed in no real order whatsoever. You’re just going to have to scroll through the whole mess song by song.
Don’t get me started on the Live shows that I spent months and months and months arranging so the appear in chrononlogical order AFTER the studio albums… now they are just thrown in between studio albums, and most of them are 25+ songs, so you scroll for literally 10 minutes or more trying to find an album… oh well, im at my destination, and I did not listen to any songs, Thanks Apple
In short: This is a terrible app. Just awful.

After upgrading since around 2002, and becoming paranoid after losing 65 songs, I went to great lengths to make sure that I had back-ups of all music, sometimes in two or three places.
After a harddrive crash (which is NEVER a matter of IF, but ALWAYS a matter of WHEN), I recovered all music and imported it into iTunes 10.X.X. Then I bought an iPhone 5 and needed to upgrade to iTunes 11.X.X.
What a freaking disaster. Mos of my 1486 songs were duplicated from 4-8 times.
The reason I write all this is to say that MediaMonkey took days of work deduplicating my songs, and made it about 2 days.
If you did not check out MediaMonkey, it might be worth a look, because it seemed to provide a nice front-end for iTunes collections, especially those which contained 100,000s of tunes. ALSO supports DNLA in case you have upper end audio equipment, and 10 common codecs are included for an additional 10 bucks when you buy the 30 dollar program.
    Just my 2 cents.
BTW - I agree, that ever since iTunes 4.X.X, it seems that Apple designers are driven by making it painful for serious users to easily and effectively use iTunes. I am ready to move completely away from Apple and utilize Amazon Cloud which my music-minded son-in-law has been using almost since its inception - and he is pretty much an Apple fanboy - but one with hundreds of thousands of songs...
Apple get your **** together - or we will vote with our feet (and dollars).

  • IPod Sync warning

When playing music from my iPod through itunes I keep getting this warning saying "The iPod cannot be synced. The required file is in use." I have my settings set to 'manually manage music' so don't know why it keeps happening.
    Any ideas?

Hmm, it is only very recently (about 6 months ago I think) that the policy on Music changed. Prior to that you would be routinely reminded to back up all purchases (immediately after the successfully completed download), unless of course you ticked an option not to be reminded again. The change in policy (in our favour) would have been noted in the small print that neither you or I read when upgrading iTunes, though we say that we have.
Again I'm still not certain if audiobooks are excluded from both "Music" and "Books". One would hope that they belonged to one category or the other in respect of redownloading. In the past, in the event of an absolute disaster, fatal hard-drive crash, fire etc. some users have been able to prevail upon the charity of the iTunes store staff who would occasionaly grant a second, but never a third, download of past purchases.
The restictions on different types of media are ultimately imposed by the rights holders, not Apple. It is in Apple's interests to offer the same terms as their competitors, so my guess is that nobody currently offers unlimited repeat downloads of movies. Certainly the unique codes you get on some DVDs/Blu-Rays are one-time only.

  • Warning!  Songs were removed from iTunes Library after installing new iTunes and iPad/iPod Sync

I purchased the iPad 2 yesterday, updated my itunes software, and itunes messages indicated that it would not allow certain songs to be included in my library any longer since these were not purchased from iTunes.  Many of the songs were from CDs that I stored on this library for several years.  Only after I upgraded iTunes with this new iPad was my music removed.  Luckily I still have my music on my iPod, but my iTunes library on my laptop contains only the music I have purchased from iTunes with the last 18 months.  Weirdly, except for one particular song that iTunes said was not purchased from them, but it was part of an entire album purchase from iTunes.  Also, all of the movies I purchased from iTunes were also removed. I am not able to sync any movies onto my iPad.
I restored the iPad a second time, reinstalled the itunes and have the same result.  All of my older archived music is gone from the iTunes library.
Warning, if you want your music, back it up before installing the latest iTunes particularly if you have the new iPad 2.

  • Error -50 & -69 When trying to sync music Ipod Classic 160gb

    Hi everybody,
I recently installed an x64 version of Windows 7 Ultimate. I have an Ipod Classic 160gb (late 2009), and i am trying to sync it to my itunes library. However, everytime i do so, it will copy across a few songs (a different number everytime, no more than 500 though) my Itunes freezes up (as well as the ipod). After a while, once it "comes back to life" i get either "Itunes cannot copy {Song Name} to {Ipod Name} Ipod. An unknown Error Occurred (-50)." or "Itunes cannot copy {Song Name} to {Ipod Name} Ipod. An unknown Error Occurred (-69)".
Here is what i have tried:
Enable Disc Use - No Luck
Uninstall / Reinstall Itunes + Rebuild of Library - No Luck
Uninstall Itunes, reinstall + Rebuild Library on Previous version (9.2) of Itunes - No Luck
Kill APSDaemon.exe While synching - No Luck
KIll all other Apple Services + Processes - No Luck
    Uninstall Antivirus - No Luck
    Reformat Ipod - No Luck
Create a Virtual x32 environment of Windows 7, and recreate my library using the latest Itunes - No Luck
Virtualize a Mac environment, and try on there - MAC OSX doesn't allow virtualization on a Windows "Base" (what a piece of ****) - SO, no luck
Media Monkey Transfer - freezes up like a dead body, then just crashes.
Manually transfer - Work sometimes, doesn't work otherimes. Seems to be Random.
I know you are all going to say "oh, the song it get stuck on is corrupt". Well, it isn't. The song plays fine in Itunes if i go to investigate. When i go to my music "source" it is an actuall file, with an actual file size. I can also play it with VLC media player as well.
Sync with my Dad's IMAC - Success. My Dad has 5.5gb of music (more than 500 songs). Although Ipod did get seem to get stuck on a couple of songs, it succesfully sync'ed
Use Sharepod - Success (although, i have 2940 folders, and sharepod will only allow me to transfer one folder at a time) - So, No Luck
I know the Ipod is fine because if i Sync via MAC or Sharepod, it will play music fine. Also, before the installation of the x64, it sync'd fine. It would be silly that an Ipod dies because i change my Windows Installation.
Another thing, while in the act of Synching, the IPOD screen displays "Synchronising", then, it will just go to "Connected". On the MAC it stayed as "Synchronising" the entire time.
Basically, i am at my wits end. I have tried everything i can think of.  I now have a very expensive paper weight, which is ******** me to tears.
If anybody has any solutions, or ideas, i would love to hear them.
    Thanks,
    Lachlan

You seem to have tried everything, and you say it's syncing fine on your Dad's iMac, so I assume, you have also  done a Disk Diagnostic from an earlier post by tt2 and conclude that your iPod Hardisk is good.
You don't have to use it as a heavy paperweight, the problem is only using your Windows 7 machine for syncing.
In your troubleshooting steps, did you try to use another High-Speed USB 2.0 port, USB controller resource are very scarce, so if you use other USB devices, while syncing your iPod, it may just freeze.
Windows have a bad reputation for device conflict, so better don't connect other  USB devices, while syncing, better sync it while disconnected from Internet, stop antivirus just before you go to bed.
    Have a nice day!

  • IPod Video Folder = All my Music

Okay, first of all, i've had really bad luck w/ iPods Lately... I had a 30Gig Photo, it "sadface icon'd" and i sent it in, got a new one and sold it to my friend and bought the new 60GB Vid. My friend had troubles w/ the new one and luckily got a new-er one for free. Hassle.
But anyway, i have the 60GB Video iPod and when i click the Video Folder, when i click movies it shows all my "songs" and when i click Music Videos it shows all my "artists"... It seems like a simple fix or lame gitch. If i send it in, i'll lose all my movies (didn't back them up). Over-all... the Music works Great, but even when i find Movies or Music Videos in the "songs" in Music Videos, they only play the sound and has the first screenshot on the page (and this isn't the "TV Out" issue, because i've tried that).

Ohh yeah... and this same deal happened to two of my friends, EXACTLY.

  • Loads of problems with my iPod.

Ever since I updated to iTunes 7.4, my 30 gig late-5th gen iPod has been causing me problems.
I bought a few songs on iTunes Music Store and I went to sync my iPod. Nothing happened. I tried resetting my iPod, different USB port, restarting computer, reinstalling iTunes and then restoring my iPod. No use. Now I could only get about 20 songs synced at a time if I was lucky. I got most of my songs on, except for about 100 of them, which just refused to get onto my ipod. iTunes would say syncing... iPod sync completed ok to disconnect, but the songs weren't there. Today I tried yet another USB port on my computer and the second I plugged in my fully charged iPod, it just died. I can't get it to turn on again. Lots of people I know who own video iPods have had the same problem with the new version of iTunes, and I've read similar problems on the internet but Apple hasn't offered any explanation to us customers. I've bought many Apple products in the past (Macs, earlier iPods), but with having to replace my iPod three times this year (waiting for 6 weeks at a time for replacement) I think I'm going to have to move away from them unless they provide me with some decent customer support, not some badly-trainer employee whose only advice is to reset and restore my iPod.
I've had really bad luck with iPods, this is my third iPod this year; the first one had a faulty dock connector and the second one wouldn't recognize that it had been plugged out of a charger. Any help from forum members would be greatly appreciated (since I can't get it from Apple). I also think I should get an extended warranty from Apple to provide me with some sort of guarantee because my original iPods warranty is about to run out.

I have a problem with my ipod too after 3months of working perfectly the Hold switch it's not working anymore. But if i plug the ipod to the computer the Hold switch will work again.
The problem appeared after the battery was over. I tried reseting, restoring, leaving the battery to go completely empty but nothing worked
Anyone here who can help me ? This problem is really irritating.

  • IPod Froze, but now it won't sync

my iPod froze so i had to reset it. This cleared all the songs so i went to put them all back on but nothing happens.
    Please help,
    Thanks.

    Hello Mr. Bump,
By rest do you mean pressing and holding the Center and Menu buttons together until the Apple log appears? If so, then after you did this you say your music disappeared? Maybe try resetting the unit one more time.
If no luck, your iPod may be corrupt. I would recommend completely restoring the iPod via iTunes and starting from scratch in regards to adding all your music and files back to it.
Here are instructions on how to restore your iPod. Hope it helps.

If I am mistaken on any of these assumptions, let me know. Would love to help.
