Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • My mac is running extremely slow. More often than not when I try to click something or type something it gives me the "thinking" pointer icon.  I ran the etre check program and got this:

    Problem description:

OK, thanks. First, open Disk Utility and the Repair Disk Permissions on your internal HD. You can find DU in Applications - Utilitie. After doing so please restart in Safe Mode, this is easily done by holding down the Shift Key on your keyboard when you hear the start up tone, you will see a progress bar appear letting yuo know it's starting in Safe Mode. Then reset the SMC and PRAM, instructions can be found by clicking iMac SMC and PRAM reset. Then retest.

  • Ipad Air is extremely slow on wifi. Ipad 1 worked fine.

My Ipad Air wifi is extremely slow. I have seen online this is an issue. I have read responses but still confused. Ipad 1 worked fine.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Macbook air wireless extremely slow

I have a brand new macbook air and I'm having trouble with the wireless performance.
I don't think its the same problem everyone else is having. I don't think I'm losing my wifi connection (I've only seen it drop once).
But, loading web pages is extremely slow. Every web page takes minutes to load, some time out.
This doesn't happen on any of the other computers on our network- including an older macbook and a macbook pro that we have.
    Any ideas?

Power off the router. Wait awhile. Power it back on. Wait until all the lights are lit up properly.
    It will take a while.
    Restart the computer.
    Empty Caches
    Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.

  • Will installing Microsoft office on my mac air 2gb 64mb slow my system down, I don't have music or big files currently on my device?

If I install Microsoft office on my mac air 2gb 64mb, will it slow my system down?  I also have a macbook pro that i dont take out the house with Microsoft office already installed.  Am I best to install Pages on the mac air or will it cause compatibility issues when working on files between the two devices?
    Any help appreciated

The big question I have is this: is it your intention to work on the same documents on both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro? If so, I strongly suggest that you pick one program and use it on both. Pages and Word are both good word processors but they really are not compatible - rather Pages can read Word files and be forced to create Word files. But the reading and writing isn't perfect and sometimes the amount of work required to re-edit a translated file is substantial.
Installing Office on the MacBook Air isn't going to slow it down unless your hard drive is already very full and Word should run okay on it (though you might not be able to run Word at the same time as you run other programs).

  • Mac mini works extremely slow

    Hi
I have Mac mini that works extremely slow,
it starts to load the OS but turns really slow once the login is done, it takes about 30-40 min to load.
i did few tests like permissions verify and fix, then verify and repair disk which said that Macintosh HD is OK.
What should I do next? Its sounds like hardware issue - for my opinion its the HDD but I can't understand why when I use the Restore mode the computer works fast so maybe its OS issue related? Should I reinstall OSX?
what do you recommend for me as a Mac newbie user
    thanks a lot

The boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault.
Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I am using Microsoft Excel(for Mac) and it is running extremely slow.  I have a 3 different functions running and about 10,000 lines of data, but to delete 1 line of data or add a column takes about half an hour.  I tried rebooting my computer and that didn't really help too much.  Is there anything else I can do?  I have a 13-inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

  • My mac air is VERY slow.  What can I do to increase speed?

Speed on my MacBook Air is incredibly slow.  My wife has the same computer and works on the same network but her speed is fine.  I have cleared cache and history but this has not helped.  Any thoughts on what else I can do to alleviate this problem?  Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
    Tony

    Hi,
    Try this
    http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/25_ways_speed_your_mac?page=0,0
especially "Repair permission", "Repair Disk" and SMC reset.
    Hope it helps.
    Cheers.

  • MacBook Air 13'' - extremely slow!!

    Hello everyone,
    I have a Macbook Air mid 2011.
    i7 1800 Mhz
    4GB RAM
    250GB Samsung SSD
At first the computer was extremely fast, but today it is as sluggish as ****! It is especially noticeable in folowing applications:
Mail - almost unusable, extremely sluggish when scrolling through mails, list or details. I had 600k mails, i deleted everything and set the account up new, no difference!!
Safari - just having it open sometimes peaks CPU usage to 60-70% for no reason, even scrolling Google results is slow!
iWorks (Pages, Numbers, you name it) - normal writing in Pages is slow, I write 5 words and an umbrella starts spinning while it's Autosaving
Three-Finger scrolling between virtual desktops or fullscreen Apps - the animation is sluggish IF the Dock is on the bottom, if i put it on the left/right it is fluent and fast
    etc.
I have tried to do the folowing:
    Verify/Repair permisions
    Verify/Repair disk
    Reinstall Lion
Completely format the harddisk and make a clean Lion install
Delete all the Apps I had installed, try it with only preinstalled Apps
    Updating Lion to latest release
NOTHING of the above helped, I have a MacBook Pro mid 2010 and it works much better!!
    Please help,
    Thank you!

After trying every possible solution I could find on Google (NRAM reset, Verify/Repair Disk and Permissions, Clean Install, Reinstall, Restore from Time Machine etc.) and nothing helped, with my Mac behaving the way it is, the conclusion is that they f**ucked something up with drivers in the latest MacOS update.
Scrolling anything (Safari webpage, Mail list etc.) isn't fluid but jumping around, just like on Windows when you do a fresh install and graphic card drivers aren't installed (it's running on some Default Windows drivers).
The problem is most probably in the Intel HD Graphics 3000. Eighter it needs a firmware or driver update. Every time I make a move that is graphically demanding (even dragging around windows) peeks my CPU usage to 100% (windowserver process goes nuts), probably because of no graphic acceleration, the CPU has to do all the work.
Altho, an i7 should go**amn be able to handle Safari webpages scrolling.

  • Macbook Air running extremely slow - kernel_task at 300% cpu usage

I purchased my Macbook Air roughly 15 months ago and it's performance has constantly been impressive since I purchased it - until roughly a fortnight ago. I came home from work one afternoon and it was running at a snails pace. I had recently upgraded to Yosemite though I'm unsure if this had anything to do with it. I had also recently installed FitBit software to sync to my new FitBit flex.
It has continued to run in this manner constantly since the problem began. It is ridiculously slow, every single request takes a very long time to respond. Logging in takes forever. When I click on an app to open it, the icon bounces for 30 seconds or more, and it's not a smooth bounce either, it's quite a jagged bounce!
I'm hoping someone is able to provide some advice, guidance or help. The laptop is no longer covered by the 12 month Manufacturer Warranty, and I did not purchase an Apple Care plan as no Apple product I've owned before has experienced issues like this.
This whole experience is killing me! I'm suspecting hardware failure and I'm just so sad that this could happen to the laptop I've loved so much since I bought it!
    The problem:
The kernel_task process is constantly running at 300% or higher cpu usage, with Activity Monitor indicating the processor is being maxed out by a system task. Also, the laptop's fan is constantly running at full capacity - from the moment the laptop turns on, or wakes up.
What I think the problem might be:
As a result of many, many Google searches, it appears that this behaviour may be due to the Macbook Air thinking it is overheating - and I will clarify here that it certainly is not. It is cool to touch, always, when this problem occurs. (yet the fan is almost taking off!). As a result of the MacBook Air thinking it's overheating, it not only is running the fan at a very high RPM (confirmed with iStat), but it also is intentionally choking the system with 'simple requests' in attempt to cool the computer down. Apparently this is a built-in feature of OS X. The kernel has priority over user tasks, causing all user tasks to be granted a lower priority, causing the computer to run INCREDIBLY SLOW. Even as I'm typing this, I'm about two sentences ahead of what is showing on the screen!
    Steps I have taken:
    - Read widely across the internet with every possible relevant search term I can think of
    - Downloaded iStat to see if any of the temperatures are too high (they all seemed fine..)
    - Disabled Bluetooth and Wifi. (no change)
    - Reset SMC (multiple times.., no change)
    - Reset PRAM (multiple times.., no change)
    - Drained the battery completely (2 or 3 times, no change)
    - Install Windows 7 on BootCamp in attempt to bypass the issue (CPU usage was 100% constantly in Windows also)
    - Uninstalled FitBit software (no change..)
    - Uninstalled other software I did not need (no change..)
    - Attempt to boot into Safe Mode / Recovery Mode (even in this modes, the same thing is happening)
    - Repaired Disk Permissions
    - Backed up all personal data
    - Used the built-in Internet Recovery mode to format my Macintosh HD and re-install a fresh copy of OS X (Mountain Lion). (no change…)
    - Re-upgrade to Yosemite (no change..)
I've downloaded EtreCheck and here is the output:
    Problem description:
OS X is running incredibly slow. kernel_task process is constantly using 300% and upward CPU usage.

I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.
I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.
I went in and they ran a thorough diagnostic check on my Macbook Air and determined that the sensors were indeed faulty - several were providing no information "No reading" instead of providing a temperature. Thus, the Air was unaware of the temperature across multiple components.
Despite the laptop being outside the 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty, the Apple Store determined that it was covered under warranty through Australian Consumer Law - the laptop is now in for a complete repair under warranty at no cost to myself.
    I couldn't be happier.

  • Macbook Air running extremely slow

    EtreCheck version: 2.1.5 (108)
