My mac apps won't check spelling

I have a MacPro running OSX 10.8.4. My TextEdit, Pages and other mac programs have stopped checking spelling. Yes I have checked to make sure that the check spelling while typing is checked. Any ideas for fixing this?

My TextEdit does not work, nor does the spell check in Mail. I have Mountain Lion 10.8.4 on my iMac 9,1, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I have shut down and restarted.
I selected the Spelling preferences under "Edit" in both apps to Check Spelling While Typing, Check Grammar With Spelling, Correct Spelling Automatically. When typing in either app, Spell Check and Check Grammar doesn't work; I tried
Also when I selected Show Spelling and Grammar, the dialog box that should open up, doesn't---not in TextEdit nor in Mail. Check Document Now doesn't work.
I followed your directions to: 'go to System Preferences > Language & Text.  Choose the "Text" tab on top, and check the spelling box there.  Also check the "Region" '  That didn't make a difference either.
System Software is up-to-date.

  • Why won't Check Spelling work in TextEdit?

Since the last couple of updates to Mountain Lion OSX (v10.8.4) the TextEdit, Mail, Notes, and Stickies applications can't check spelling and grammar. The dialog box "Show Spelling & Grammar" won't open either. Check Spelling isn't working in this post I'm writing within Safari.
I verified that System Preferences "Language & Text" has correct spelling turned on. I double-checked the Edit>Spelling & Grammar choices were turned on in all the apps listed above.
Looking for some help or directions. My last OS Software on DVD is Snow Leopard and it wouldn't update the above applications or anything else. I posted a message to Apple Support earlier and am waiting for a reply.
    Thanks
Also have MacBookPro, iphone, and ipad with all software up-to-date.

I reinstalled OSX 10.8.4. Spell check still doesn't work for mail, textedit, stickies, or Notes. I also enabled Language & Text in the System Preferences.
Spell check works in this reply when I click the green check mark above.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks.
P.S. I have 1.5 Mbps speed. I can get 7 Mbps if I pay an extra $15 per month and buy a new modem for $100 ...NOT.

  • Mac apps won't open, very slow, wifi: no hardware installed.

Hi, I am extremely frustrated right now. I recently software updated, but I'm having major issues. The IT department at my university couldn't handle this one. Basically, my MacBook won't do anything right now. It starts fine, and I can still access files so right now I'm working on transferring all of them. When I try to open an app, it will just bounce forever and I'll have to force quit it. Also, when my wifi is clicked, it says there is no hardware installed in grey type. Ive tried repairing permissions and everything short of a wipe/install....to my knowledge. I'm so frustrated right now so I'd love some input! Thanks!

  • I photo and 4 other mac apps won't upgrade in Yosemite

Had a fellow at the genius bar install Yosemite for me. Now that I am home I see a gray circle with a bar through it superimposed on my iPhoto icon. I clicked on it an it seemed to take me to an iPhoto update page but when i clicked install I got the message: "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled".  My machine told me I had 5 updates so I tried to up date them. The update for my printer seems to have installed OK, but I get this same "This update not available...." for iMovie, Keynote, Page, and Numbers. Any body else having this problem? Is there a fix?
    Thanks, Bob

Log into the App store under the Apple ID that was used to set up the computer or to purchase iPhoto to do the update/upgrade
If that does not resolve then contact App store support using the link on the right of the App store window

  • I just loaded snow leopard but removed the the mac app store icon from the doc and now I can't find it

I am trying to upgrade to Lion. I just loaded the snow leapord onto the computer and accidently removed the new mac app store icon from the dock and now I can't find it. I guess I need it to buy Lion. How do I get it back? It's not in the mac HD apps file. Thanks

Should be in the Applications folder as "App Store", not as "Mac App Store".
Check first in the Applications folder accessible via that named item in the Dock (also accessible at (hard drive) > Applications).
If it's not there, it may be in the Applications folder for your user: (hard drive) > Users > youraccountname > Applications.

  • IPhoto 9.2.1 update from Mac App Store will not update from 9.1.5

I downloaded the iPhoto 9.2.1 update from Mac App Store.
When I try to update from 9.1.5 to 9.2.1, I get the message: "The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store."
Since the Mac App Store is where I downloaded the update from, I don't know how exactly to proceed.
    Any suggestions?

    Terence and Peter,
I have iPhoto 9.1.5 which was installed on my iMac that I received November, 2011.
My wife has the 9.2.1 version of iPhoto on her MacBook Pro which she bought months before I bought my iMac.
My iPhoto library opens fine in 9.1.5 on my iMac but will not open the copy of her iPhoto library that I copied to my iMac. We have two libraries and I want the same one she has instead of two separate libraries.
I went to the Mac App Store and downloaded iPhoto9.2.1 Update.dmg to my desktop.
I then opened the .dmg and clicked on the iPhoto9.2.1Update.pkg.
The install iPhoto Update window started to open briefly before the Alert message "The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store. Check the Mac App Store to see if an update is available" appeared.
I checked the MAS and found this link and this is what I downloaded: http://support.apple.com/downloads#iPhoto%209.2.1

  • Mac App Store System Update

I recently tried to upgrade my iTunes to "11.0.2" but I received an error during the System Update Installtion. It stated there was corruption during download. I have attempted to go back into the Mac App Store to "check for updates" but it says there are no updates available. That is false. iTunes has not been updated, drivers have not been updated, & the other updates listed were not carried out.
How can I correct this? I know for a fact iTunes needed updating but I don't have a list of everything that was listed in the System Update. If I try to manually go into iTunes and check for updates it says an update is available, and then opens the Mac App Store. Once the App Store is open...it says there are no updates.
Please help, your time and attention is appreciated. Thank you,

mende1 thank you so much! The direct link to the update fixed it for me! I manually downloaded the combo link you provided. Now when I went back to the Mac App Store I was able to find updates that are due (I.E. Java, iTunes, Digital Raw Image, Airport Utility, HP Drivers, and more).
I have one more question to ask you. Also can you repost your solution, the one with the link, so I can mark it as it being the post to solve my issue? Since I previous marked it as "helpful" I can't remark it for solving my issue.
My last question is aside from verifying the disk/permissions, is there any other way for me to check the hardrive and make sure there's no other issues? I'm paranoid now that there may be errors on the drive or something. Or should I be 100% content since the disk utility no longer finds issues?
Again, thank you for your time mende1!

  • Does Mac have an app that will check and correct spelling

Does Mac have an app that will check and correct spelling

Spell Check has been built into Mac OS X for years, including the ancient version listed in your profile. You don't need a separate app.
    Mac OS X 10.4 Help
    Checking spelling as you type
In many Mac OS X applications, you can have the application automatically check your spelling as you type. When you mistype or misspell a word, it's underlined in red so you can quickly spot errors and correct them.
Open the application that you want to use and choose Edit > Spelling > "Check Spelling as You Type."
If you don't see this item in the Edit menu, the application doesn't provide the Mac OS X spell-checking feature. The application may have its own spell-checker. Look in the application's preferences or menus for a spell-checker.

  • New Printer Drivers won't load in Mac App Store

    Hi!
I've recently update my mid-2014 rMBP to the Final release of Yosemite, up from the Yosemite Public Beta 6. I've been able, during the beta phase to add my home printer (an HP OfficeJet 4500) after (or before?) the Mac App Store had downloaded the required HP drivers (3.3.1).
Now, however, I'm trying to add an HP LaserJet 1200 series (whose drivers are in the official list). I've tried several times, asked the MAS to check for new updates a thousand times but still it won't download any new printer drivers.
When adding the printer and selecting the driver from the list of drivers bundled with OS X, I could see various printers (with a large number of HP printers who use the aforementioned 3.0 drivers which have been downloaded already), but no HP LaserJet 1200. I don't have them because they're not the same as the 3.0 ones. On my sister's 2010 MBP, which didn't go through the beta testing phase, I found what seems to be all the drivers from the list (at least there was the one for the 1200 Series).
So my question is, how do I somehow "trigger" the MAS to download the required drivers (19.8) ? Is anyone else having troubles installing printer drivers?

Thank you for your quick reply! I've deleted the hp folder (and moved the PPD relating to the printer which is already installed, the OfficeJet, just to see if it would help) and had the MAS check for new updates. No success yet, though.
However there's a slight misunderstanding regarding which drivers I'm trying to install : I already have the 3.3.1 drivers (for the OfficeJet) but the drivers which won't download are the 19.8 for the LaserJet printer. are these separately downloadable too?

  • IMovie won't update to 9.0.8, Mac App Store tells me I have to buy?

So, the problem I am having, as alluded to by the title, is that in the "Updates section of the Mac App Store, iMovie has an update to 9.0.8 listed, but when I attempt to update to the new version, the Mac App Store tells me I need to buy it, However, iMovie came preinstalled on my 1 1/2 month old Macbook Pro with Retina Display. I don't use iMovie often, so it's not a big deal, but I do find it very annoying.

When you get a new Mac with the iLife apps preinstalled, you need to accept these apps into your Mac App Store (MAS)/iTunes Stores Apple ID. Have you done that?
Normally soon after setting up your new Mac you need to open the MAS and sign into your account. Go to the Purchased pane and acccept the three iLife apps.

  • Does apple check mac app store apps for viruses and malware?

Are all of the apps submitted to the Mac App Store check to make sure they dont have viruses in them? I just wanted to make sure before i go and start downloading a lot of applications from there.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Yes all apps in the MAS are virus free.

  • IPad app problems it won't. Let me download apps.it says check billing info I check everything number by number letter by letter

iPad version 4.2.1 app problems it won't. Let me download apps.it says check billing info I check everything number by number letter by letter it still won't work everything on my billing is correct

If you had money in your account when you purchased a paid app and Apple didn't claim on the payment to your bank until after the download it maybe that there was insufficient balancce in your account to complete the purchase and therefore you'll need to wait until you have the funds to make the payment, when you have billing issues it won't even let you download free apps.
If that isn't the case then give iTunes store a call or email them and they can tell you exactly what is wrong with the account

  • Mac App Store won't Update Purchase...

    Hello
    I have a Macbook
    It is running 10.6.8
I purchased Angry Birds through the Mac Appstore (not itunes.. the Mac App store..) a while ago.
I noticed last night there was an update available (on the Dock, a little red 1 in the App Store logo)
I click on the App store logo and click on Updates
I see the update that is available
I click on that and get this error message
"You Have Updated Available for Other Accounts..
To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
However.. I have NO other accounts..
I have been in touch with Apple Support and they cannot help me and said I should contact Roivo support.. however this seems more an AppStore issue than an App issue
I have run the command to make sure I have no 3rd party apps installed (I don't)
There is no pirated or illegal apps on this computer
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Angry Birds app and still the same error.
Previous updates to this particilar app were fine..
    Thoughts?

    Just per chance, you could try this;
    Finding a pirated app
All MAS apps have a MAS receipt in their app bundle. Check any app acquired from the MAS. Right click on the app's icon in your Apps folder and choose Show package contents. In the Contents folder is a _MASReceipt folder and in that folder is the coded MAS receipt. It has the Apple ID of the MAS account that bought/acquired the app from the MAS. It is that receipt that the MAS uses to alert you that an app has an update. There would not be a notice of an update with someone else's Apple ID showing in the MAS on your Mac, if there was not an app with a receipt from this person's account somewhere on your Mac.
    Download the free app FindAnyFile (FAF);
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
This app is easier to use and seems to be more powerful than Spotlight. Open FAF and in the box type _MASReceipt and press Find. It should come up with a list of every app on the Mac with a MAS receipt. Compare the apps with receipts in FAF's list with your purchased apps list in the Mac App Store. The odd app out should be the pirated app.
