My Mac ate my Disk and won't give it back

My iMac accepted my iWork CD but won't recognize it in the drive nor will it eject it.
I've restart and shut down while holding the eject button. What shall I try next? Any suggestions?
Steve

It sounds like the disk is physically "in" but the drive isn't detecting it...
Is the disk still captive of the drive? I think I've read postings on this forum where people have done various methods to rescue the disk out. A quick search might be helpful. (I'm afraid of offering these suggestions though.)
Good luck!

  • QT stole all my file associations and won't give them back

Once I installed the latest iTunes, Quicktime decided to steal all my file associations. Now anytime I click on an mp3 on a website, I get that annoying QuickTime plugin that takes up the entire page when I used to get a Windows Media Player plugin that either opened as a new instance, or in the left media column.
I went into the MIME and File Types settings for Quicktime and removed everything, I also went into my Windows File Types and made sure mp3s were set to play with Windows Media Player. None of this helped.
How can I get my file associations back?
    Thanks.

Try altering the tag for the ringtone: right-click on a ringtone in iTunes and select Get Info, go to the Info tab and make a slight change to the Artist, tap OK and try syncing again.  If it transfers to your phone do the same for the others.

  • Sync'd iPhone 3GS on laptop. iTunes captured tones and won't give them back!!!

Several months ago, I synced my phone and I had 4 ringtones I had purchased from the iTunes store. When the sync was finished my tones were on my iTunes under tones, on my laptop, but NOT on my phone. I believe this may have been the same sync in which I updated and got iOS 5. I thought I saw something about a possible bug. I checked out a few online forums and help discussions. I thought I understood how to get them back onto the phone. So today I tried agian and NO, Not happening. I tried everything I thought I knew to do and still, my ringtones show up on the itunes library page. I go to tones, they are there. all their little boxes are checked. I right cllick them and I have choices. I tried moving them to purchased to see if I could download them again. No luck. The only noticable difference in today's sync is that the one lonely Christmas ringtone that I purchased in December didn't go bye bye and get trapped in iTunes purgatory. Can anyone help  me? I REALLY do NOT want to re-purchase tones I have already paid for(BTW, I tried that too. But with tones it doesn't catch you like music does and tell you that you have already purchsed that tone! *sigh*)
    Thanks

    Hi BobRz
Thanks for you suggestion but it didn't work - are there other ways for solving this problem? Or is it because my files that I want to copy and paste onto my hard disk etc are too big? (However there is space on my hard disk and it works on a PC)

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

    EMERGENCY!!!!!!!!
IS THERE ANY WAY TO RETREIVE AN ACCIDENTALLY DELETED BACK UP FROM MY TIME MACHINE DRIVE????
In other words, I emptied out a folder on my main MAC to make space and the next subsequent backup backed up the EMPTY FOLDER and then deleted the "old backup" that actually contained the contents of the very important folder.
Now only the emptied folder exists on my MAC and in the two backups on my Time machine backup drive.
This was clearly a big mistake on my part not realizing that the "old backup" being deleted by Time Machine would include backed up files that I had no intention of getting rid of....
    What can I do now?
Is DATA RETREIVAL even an option?
I am sure that the Folder of files that I need are on the most recently deleted "OLD BACKUP" but how do I get to this, if even possible?????
    Super desperate situation here...

It may be possible to recover some of the data, if it hasn't been overwritten, but it won't be cheap or easy.
You've posted in the Time Capsule forum, but you mention a "backup drive."  If your backups are on a Time Capsule's internal HD, instead of an external HD, it's even worse.
    See Data Recovery.
    Good luck.

Try doing a click-and-hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks".

after a restart it works for a time, but always slow. I went to the Applestore this afternoon and the made a check and said it would be the logicboard and they would have to change it for CHF 600 and it would be ready in 10 - 15 days

Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

I  tried to sync my iPod touch to a new MacPro laptop and it deleted all of my music and videos. I called tech support and they told me to email iTunes and they would give it back to me. How do I do this??

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

  • My mac mini sudenly frozed and won't boot in again.

while i surf the net with safari, safari just close itself and the screen was dim with a message to restart . after i do restart my mac mini it can't log in to os and fail to install new os from cd. i did test hardware and it error 4MEM/1/40000000 . is it because my kingston ram that i just replace 1 month ago? i think it just works....

I am having a similar issue to the original post! However, I have not upgraded my RAM. I've only had my Mac Mini for 2 months. I have the dual 512MB RAM sticks which came with the Mac Mini from Apple. The case has never been opened.
My system won't boot into the Mac OS GUI. I just get dumped to the Darwin prompts. I can't successfully re-install the OS from DVD/CD. I run the Apple Hardware Tests from disk and get "4MEM/1/40000000".
I noticed this when I tried to login to my machine on 6May07.
Does anyone know if the brick and mortar Apple Stores can replace the memory under warranty on the spot? (The closest Apple Store to me is about a 3 hour drive). I hate calling the Apple hotline.

  • Crashed Mac! Crazy lines and won't boot up!

Well, I have an iBook G4 and my Mac recently went crazy.
I was working in my room and the Mac was working fine and then I closed the lid and went down stairs to do some work. Lo and behold, I open it back up and I see just a bunch of random crazy colored lines.
Booting up and down doesn't do anything.
It's weird because if I were to leave it be for a few hours and boot it up it would go all the way to the blue screen where it just shows the Apple symbol and the little circle waiting thing and then just stops.
But if I were to try to boot it up right after that the lines would come back.
I just tried to use Discwarrior on another Mac to "defrag" my Mac. It was 33% unoptimized, or however you want to say it, X_x. So, I tried that, got everything in order. Nothing.
The problem is though my CD drive has been broke for months. So, I can't try to boot up from the Panther disc.
Help! I have important session files for a gig that needs to be done in two weeks!

    iBook   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

I couldn't say for sure, but that sounds a lot like the same problem I had a few months ago. Very sadly, it seems the same problem (I think) has crept up on me again.
The worst news is that the problem was bad hardware (in the case of a few months ago) and the only fix was to ship the machine back to Apple (thank goodness for the extended service plan). I can't remember off the top of my head what all they replaced, but it was a lot!
The good news out of the situation was that I found I could backup my hard drive before shipping it out. If you've got access to another mac (I'm not sure if I would work with a pc or not) and your machine has a firewire port on it, do the following.
Be sure the malfunctioning machine is shut off and hook it directly to another mac with a firewire cable. If it's not already on, turn on the working machine. Now, press the power button on the dead machine, but hold down the "T" key right after the startup sound. The machine will (hopefully) boot into a firewire mode and will act only as an external drive to the working machine. Copy the files you need.
Not sure that this is your problem or if the fix will work - but it worked for me twice now (though I'm not thrilled my ibook is going to have to get shipped back again).

  • Problems: undoes sleep, and won't give up

    Folks:
A few days ago, I connected a new Seagate 1.5TB drive (USB2), accepted an offer to format the drive, and enabled TM. (Or was it vice-versa? I don't recall.)
    First Problem: Something undoes sleep
Since then, when I use Apple Menu "Sleep" the system goes to sleep, and that wakes up a few seconds later. Always. This cannot be good for the system, and it isn't good for my electricity bill.
Is this waking due to enabling TM and/or attaching the Seagate drive? It seems likely, as it started happen just after I enabled TM, and I am certain I have done nothing else to the system that should affect sleep. About "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver Control Panel: I routinely leave this ENABLED. I've tried both settings since I enabled TM. No difference.
I routinely leave the Energy Saver "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for" setting to 15 or so minutes. Since the computer was not been asleep any morning when I start work since I enabled TM, I assume this route to sleep also fails.
Q1: How to restore sound sleep on my system?
    Second issue: Won't give up.
At the moment, the TM monitor icon at the upper right of my screen is circling. It's been circling for at least 15 minutes. Before that I noticed that TM had started a backup. I checked: it was going to back up only 552 KB, which seemed reasonable -- I haven't been doing very much so far this morning. I checked minutes later. No sign of progress. I checked a few minutes later, no progress, so I clicked on the 'x' to abort the backup. Now the top entry on the TM monitor pulldown has been reading "Stopping Backup" for at least 5 minutes.
What to do? TM won't be able to do the next hourly backup if it's still trying to abort the previous one. I tried disabling TM in its Control Panel. It's now off, and yet both the Control Panel and monitor say it's back to trying to backup 552KB ... again.
I'll try dismounting and remounting the external drive. If that fails, I'll restart the system. But, of course, neither of these should be necessary.
BTW, strangely, the full TM menu says the last backup was at 3:10 AM, almost 7 hours ago. Since I didn't try to put the system to sleep last night at about 10pm, and it wasn't asleep when I arrived ... why 3:10? Maybe that's when the Unix cron-timed daily maintenance was done?
By the way, the USB drive IS alive and working. I opened it, found a random file from one of the backed-up folders, and copied it to my internal drive, no problem.
Q2: How to definitively abort a backup?
Q3: How to avoid hung backups in the future?
    TIA,
    Henry

    Pondini:
    Thanks for your response!
    1. Exclude your TM disk from any anti-virus scanning.
    None running.
    2. Exclude it from Spotlight (System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy)
Done! The next hourly scan was running so I aborted it by unmounting and remounting the external disk. When I remounted, TM appeared to be in a consistent, "happy" state. So I chose "Back Up Now" and the backup ran without apparent problem.
So far, so good, Excluding seems to have helped. I'll post back if anything different happens at the next hourly backup, or overnight.
    3. Until you resolve this, leave the Put the hard drive(s) to sleep . . .
    option OFF.
I did that before my original post, and left it disabled.
My system still won't stay asleep for more than a few seconds.
    How is your USB disk attached to your Mac (direct or via USB hub;
    port on back or keyboard)?
Directly to the back of the machine. My Mac did not seem to like for it to be connected though my external hub -- it complained about not enough power and shut down the hub. That seems strange, because both the drive and the hub are powered separately by wall-warts. But that's not an issue now.
There may be some clues in your logs. Download the Time Machine Buddy widget
    from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html.
I'll just use the standard log interface... It shows some nice messages for successful TM backups. Two messages seem to correlate with TM hangs. Here they are:
    Indexing a file failed. Returned -1120 for: /private/tmp, /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Espresso/2009-04-28-041015.inProgress/02A5D71D-2086-47 E0-A006-3C8030F2CAD8/Espresso's HD/private/tmp
    Indexing a file failed. Returned -1120 for: /Library/Caches, /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Espresso/2009-04-28-041015.inProgress/0B66D534-640A-4F 08-9ED4-CBB0F3872450/Espresso's HD/Library/Caches
I googled around about "Indexing a file failed" in connection with TM, but I didn't find anything that useful.
You did this via the Finder? For experimenting, that's ok, but normally to
restore a file/folder from your backups, use the TM interface Enter Time
Machine. Using the Finder can result in permissions problems with the copied
files. Also be very careful not to use the Finder to change, move, or delete
    anything in those backups...
Thanks for the warning. I figured as much. I just located a small file on the TM disk and made a copy of it on my internal drive. Simply copying a file from the TM backup directories should not be a problem. If it is, that would indicate TM is a lot less stable than it should be.
By the way, my profile is wrong. I'm running 10.5.6, fully updated.
    Thanks,
    Henry
