My mac book is corrupting every hard drive i put in it and format.

My buddy gave me his Mac book pro 2011 to sell (Mac worked fine 100%, no issues), so my first plan was to reformat. I bought a brand new 10.6 Mac OS off Apple.com and went to reformat. Ended up failing half way, restarted computer and the hard drive wouldn't register at all, dead. So, I thought hmm bad luck, so i grabbed another 500Gb hard drive. Samething...so Just tried hooking the first hard drive with Mac os on it into my windows computer, but it won't register at all either.

Ya looks like i will be heading to the apple store, I just restarted it again and now the hard drive is appearing for some reason, but it still fails to erase data off hard drive.

Well, let's hope that nothing was jiggled out of place when you were installing the new hard drive. Your optical drive may just be out of alignment or the disc you have is "dirty." Get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, then clean the disc as thoroughly as you can starting from the center and working outward in a concentric circlular motion. See if that helps. In particular clean the inner portion well.
If this does not help, then you have a problem. You have opened the computer yourself. That action voids all support from Apple. If you take the computer in for service the store may refuse to service the computer. This is not related to your now expired warranty.

  • How do I move files from a broken Mac Book to an external hard drive

I have a broken MacBook pro, the hard drive failed and I want to move the files onto an external hard drive.  I know I can transfer the files onto the external hard drive by running the software on the external hard drive and accessing the files on the Mac Book, but I dont know how to do it.

How can you do that if the drive has failed? You cannot access a failed drive unless it is actually still functioning.
To access from an external drive you need to install the operating system on the external drive then boot the computer from the external drive. You can then access the internal drive in order to copy files and folders from it to the external drive.

you are correct, I have had my mac at geek squad to correct this problem and they could not find the fix other thanit was a hard drive problem and they replaced the hard drive and that did not fix the problem, they said it could be the speed of the HD I used as a replacement ,which was 7200,o the nw one is 5800 yet I still or they could not upgrade . they were used a jump drive and they tried to down load from itunes no luck. I started out wth the install disk and stepped up ,what could be wrong?

  • Western Digital My Book Studio II external hard drive won't mount on Mountain Lion

I have the Western Digital My Book Studio II external hard drive.  It was working fine.  After upgrading to Mountain Lion, the disk does not mount.  I can't find any help on the Western Digital site.  Has anyone else run into this?  Is there a solution?
Immediately, I'm more concerned about getting the data off this drive than getting it to work.  If I take it to an Apple Store with another external drive, could they transfer the data to it for me?

Also, check the Western Digital website for software updates. They have made numerous updates recently.

  • Is it possible to move files from corrupted sectors hard drive to a replacement one?

My 2011 macbook pro was recently diagnosed with bad sectors. I am looking to get a replacement hard drive, probably a  750 or 1 tb Seagate SATA. Do you think that is sufficient? I do not play games or do anything memory intensive. The most I do is watch a lot of movies.
Also, is it possible to move files from a corrupted sectors hard drive to the replacement? If so, how would I go about doing this?
Also, for the operating system, it is probably wrong, and can't check since my Mac pro won't get past half way on the start up loading screen.

Try a sector copy with CCC and enable using checksum file copy to insure integrity.
Then Data Rescue 4 - try demo before buying
Do a full erase of a drive before reusing.
Invest in SoftRAID.com going forward as it "looks for" weak sectors, alerts.
Also Google around but SMART Utility has been mentioned as an excellent program/utility -
When a drive has used any of its spare blocks from when it ships is #1 indicator of being time to replace.
And of course always have multiple backup sets, methods and know how to use and restore from. Even do a practice set. I would not use just TimeMachine for instance.
And for some, only a mirror array (minimum two but really consider three drive mirror, with stripe reads to improve performance) can allow pulling one, add a new member and still have a two drive mirror.
Cloud storage for backup. With OneDrive and Facebook backing up all the photos on all your devices, Macs and PCs as well as tablets and phones, you can have 100-200GB quite easily. And there is Google Drive and Amazon as well as others.
A new data drive, a drive to do all  the recovery of files that were on the failed drive(s), and probably a clean system drive and use that as you recover and build your system back up.

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • Corrupt external Hard drive

I tried to use Time machine on Mac, so that my external Hard drive was the back up. Unfortunately, I pulled the cable out too soon before it was finished and now the external drive must be corrupt as the Mac won't recognise it.  Is there anything I can do so that the Mac recognises the external hard drive ?

Do a Repair Disk on the drive, using Disk Utilities. If that doesn't work, you will either have to get stronger stuff such as Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro, etc. Or bite the bullet and reformat the drive, hence losing all the contents permanently.

  • 1 Mac, 1 PC, 1 external Hard drive?

Does anyone know of a way to hook up an external hard drive to both a pc and mac book (wirelessly) at the same time? The pc (tower) can be connected directly, and the mac book would need to be connected wirelessly either through an airport extreme or other router. Please provide the model # and brand of the HD that would fit this need. Thanks.

You need to format it in OS X Disk Utility as a Windows disk first (MS-DOS) because as you know, Macs can read Windows disks without any problems (not necessarily the PC files), but not vice versa.
This will allow your PC to read files without fail, and your Mac can do just fine writing files to it.
I'd have a separate folder solely for your Mac stuff, and within that folder, put other things in it. Again, the other way around might cause problems. (Putting all your PC files in one folder, and letting the Mac take over the disk).
This is like my flash drive. I left it formatted as an MS-DOS disk so that the Windows wouldn't have trouble with it. My Mac writes and reads things from it just fine.
Here it is from another source and they go into more detail (I'm just going on experience):

  • Installing Mac OS on an external hard drive

I've had an 80GB Mac Mini for about a year and I absolutely love it. Yet, because I use it so much, during this short time I have quickly maxed out the storage with a large amount of photo and music files. Can I install my current Mac OS on an external hard drive where I will have 4 or 5 times the hard drive space for photos and music and still retain the option of booting to that or my Mini? I had a support tech tell me this was possible, but at the time I wasn't ready to do so.
Another option would be to store music and photos on the external hard drive such that iTunes and iPhoto will navigate to folders located on this drive instead of the internal Mini hard drive. I'm sure this would be the best option, but I don't know how to do either of the two.
Would greatly appreciate any assistance and advice. Thanks!

Since I've gone both routes, I figured I'd chime in. Shortly after buying my mini bought an external firewire (don't even think about USB no matter what the sales drone might tell you) and cloned my system to it. I then created a nicely sized BootCamp partition and used the external for Mac work and the internal for PC work. I kept a small Mac partition on the internal removing everything from the OS and Disk Utilities - basically a fast diagnostic disk. That was a great way to work and a side benefit is that the 7200 RPM external FW drive booted up a bit faster. Disk space taken up? Well, yeah, but how big is an external drive? Besides, there are external drives (and do it yourself cases) made especially for the mini so you can stack them.
This summer the internal drive started clicking - not a good sign - and so I cloned the PC partition and bought a new internal drive. I've had a fair amount of experience opening minis but I make up at least one new curse every time I do There are a couple mini fan wbesites around so check them out to find out what drives are mini friendly today, check out the instructions, and see if the job is for you. It isn't brain surgery but it is more involved than putting a bandaid on a skinned knee.

  • I've lost the use of Appleworks in 10.9.2. Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other?

I've lost the use of Appleworks by upgrading to 10.9.2.
Is it possible to partition the internal hard drive of my MacBook Pro and install an older Mac OS (10.6.8) on the second partition with OS 10.9.2 on the other? I'd like to be able to boot to the older OS when I need Appleworks and  few other applications that aren't available on OS 10.9.2.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hello again, WZZZ,
Here's an update. I was successful in creating two partitions on my internal drive, and in installing OS 10.6.6 on the second partition, as per your guidence. I now have it up to 10.6.8 with all the security updates and AppleWorks. A great thing.
    Some thoughts:
    • The partitioning had one hitch; it failed at first. But once I "repaired" the disc with Disc Utility the partitioning went thru.
    • The partitioning took a long time in 'resizing the partition.' A few hours I think it was. Lots of progress bar watching.
    • If I had it to do again, I'd size the two partitions differently. My original data was occupying about 230 Gb of the 320 Gb disc. I made the new partitions share the space, about 230 and 75Gb. That left very little available space for the main disc. I ought to have put some breathing room in there. As it is, it's an incentive to clean up all those files, especially all those iTunes files. I now have about 10% of available space there and mean to continue deleting.
So, all in all a good project that got me where I wanted to go. Thank you for your help.
    Appreciatively,
    wallah

heidie22, dj_paige has a very good point there. I would not through away the NEF files; I would archive them to a external drive.
By the way, I am assuming that converting RAW files to DNG is a decision you have made and not an accident.

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

Restore from the backup you had prior to installing Mavericks.
However, the upgrade should not have altered your partition scheme. Did your erase and format the drive prior to upgrading?
