My Mac book pro hard drive died, how do I load a new OS onto my new hard drive?

I Have a friend trying to work on the computer but he is more of a PC guy. I have no backup discs and the hard drive was shot. I ordered a new OS (mountain lion?) and he said he could put it on the new hard drive. Problem is it's a downloadable OS. I guess apple doesn't put them on discs. Hopefully I'm overlooking something please help.

That model came with a disc to install OS X. Hopefully you've kept it. Otherwise you need to buy a Snow Leopard disc.
Alternatively, if you have access to another mac, you can download Mavericks for free from the App Store, follow these instructions, and then boot from the flash drive or DVD you just made by holding down the Alt key when booting up.
If you're not tech savvy or you feel uncomfortable making boot discs, your best bet would be to buy the Snow Leopard disc for $20 from the Apple Store.

A PowerPC Mac, if that's what it is, won't be able to see an Intel Mac's formatted data.  Also ExFat formatting is not supported by 10.6.3 or earlier.  I would try viewing the backup on another Intel Mac with at least 10.6.4.  If it isn't there, then the backup never really took place.  I much profer a hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

Mail has gone crazy. Header's and messages are mixed up. New Mac Book Pro. Migrated files from Time machine running snow leopard. Reinstall or new computer needed?

Ok; I'm not sure what you're doing.    36 hours is rather long.  Seems like a new migration.  Not what I intended.
Here's what I intended: from the newly-migrated and apparently-corrupt environment, create a new user, not related to any existing user, nor any migration-created user, or any other user for that matter.  That is, use  > System Preferences > Users and Groups, authenticate yourself by clicking on the padlock, and then click the + and create a wholly new user.  Then log in under that user and establish the mail access.
36 hours?  I'm wondering if there's an error or an exceedingly slow network here?  Or a really, really slow disk?  Or a sick backup?  (WiFi isn't the path I'd usually choose, either.)
Failing the attempted second migration, I'd try a different tactic.  Does your existing (old) system work?   If so, I'd bypass the backup and connect an external (scratch) USB disk drive to the (old) sstem and then boot and use Disk Utility booted from the installer DVD disk or boot and use Disk Utility from the recovery partition or booted from a recovery partition created on some other external storage (details here vary by the OS X version and what hardware you have), and perform a full-disk backup of your original internal disk to (scratch) external storage.  (Make sure you get the source and target disks chosen correctly here; copying the wrong way — from the scratch disk to your existing disk — will clobber your data!)  In esssence, this will clone your existing boot disk.  Then dismount the (formerly-scratch) external disk, transfer it over to the new system, and use it as the source of the migration, by performing a fresh OS X installation on the new system.
Target Disk Mode is also sometimes an option for accessing the disk for a migration, but that requires the right cable, and requires systems that have the same external connection; newer MacBook Pro systems use Thunderbolt for this, and older systems tend to use FireWire.  And I'm guessing you don't have compatible hardware.
The details here can and do vary by your OS X versions and your particular Mac systems — if you'll identify the specific models and hardware, somebody might be able to better tailor the above (fairly generic) sequence to your particular configuration.

  • I was given a mac book pro by a friend how or can we transfer the owner registratiuon

I bought a mac book pro second hand. The seller was going to bring me the paperwork and registration information however he now clames its lost He told me he must get the pc and send it in to an official apple location to be reset.
Can the regestration be transfered if so how can it be done? Is there a local locations (Boynton Beach Florida) that we can bring it in together? Can I do it myself if so what would I need to have from the seller?
I am hesitent to give him back the mac what if I cant get it back especially because its still registered to him. He already has the cash for the sale
    Thanks Sincerely

There is no registration required, though you as a buyer should insist upon a bill of sale and copies of the Mac's original sales invoice or other proof of ownership. No paperwork, no deal, no exceptions. There is no justification for returning the Mac to Apple for any reason.
The seller was obligated to supply the Mac's original System Install DVD, if one was included when the Mac was built, and should have erased the Mac prior to selling it.
If he did not, simply erase the disk yourself and reinstall OS X using its original System Install disc.
If no disc was included when the Mac was built, no disc is necessary to reinstall OS X. This would encompass every Mac built after (approximately) August 2011. Boot OS X Recovery, erase the disk using Disk Utility, and reinstall OS X. No Apple ID is required to do so.

  • Mac book pro keeps randomly dying

My macbook pro from mid 2009 keeps randomonly dying. At first I thought it had just overheated but it just died when I first tried to use it for the day and then kept dying every time I would try to start it until I let it sit for 20 mins. Help!

    Hello heatherkr29,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understant that your MacBook Pro is unexpectedly shutting down.  I definitely understand how this is a frustrating issue, so to begin troubleshooting, I'd like you to please reset the SMC on the Mac.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Just got a new mac book pro, need directions on how to install Office.

We just got back from a college orientation and bought our daughter a new 13 inch Macbook Pro.  We also bought Office for Mac from the college.
It has 3 DVD's with it. They all say "application media" but have a different months and year on them ( 2 have November 2010, and 1 has June 2011)
I need directions on how to install this on the computer.  Thanks!  Kelly

LibreOffice is free to use, by tens of millions in fact, didn't need to buy Office unless she is at a job that demands sharing of complicated files.
If you want save money I would take it back, Office justs come out with another and another remake which one has to keep paying over and over again.
Office type software has been donation supported for a long time now.
And it's dead easy to install, just click the link and install the package. Does everything Office does, even reads and writes to Office format.

  • Reporting of the Mac Book Pro whining noise issue - how?

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro is emitting a noise when the processor is idle. It's got all the updates and the problem did not go away.
I was looking at the Apple Support site and could not seem to find a place to report this issue. Any idea where I should go?
    Thanks,
    Tom

You may want to call Apple customer care and explain your problem. It is recognized now by Apple and they are issuing logic board updates.
Some people report having more success by going to a brick and mortar Apple store and making an appointment at the Genius bar though.
    It is really your choice.
