My Mac Book Pro makes noises

Does anyone know if it is normal for a mac to sound like a motorboat? It's not as loud as a motorboat... but it has the same general type of sound. I guess a better way to describe it is a little more than a constant purr. Any ideas?

"Does anyone know if it is normal for a mac to sound like a motorboat?"
No it is not normal.
Is the "sound" coming from your fans or HD? For fan noise see the following KB Article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 Apple Portables: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
For HD noise check out the following:

  • Mac book pro makes noise like a lawn mower

    every now and then my mac book pro starts to make a noise that resembles the sound of a lawn mower in the neighborhood coming through the open window.this lasts about 5 minutes,then the book is back to normal.
    can i stop this somehow?do i have to be concerned?

    You might download the widget "iStatPro" from the Apple site and look at it when the noise occurs. See what your fans are doing, and see if you can associate the noise with the fans and the internal temperature of your computer. The fans in my MBP idle at around 2000 RPM. If yours do the same, run at about the same speed, and then speed up for a while if the temperature goes up, then they are probably working as they should. You could post back with some actual speeds and temperatures if you want to verify that what you are experiencing is normal.
    If, however, the fans are operating at very different speeds, or one isn't operating at all and the other is going very fast, then you could have a problem with either a fan or a thermal sensor. If you think you might, run the Apple Hardware Test--it will give you an error message if there is a problem.
    If it turns out that the noise is not associated with fan speed, then I would start to worry about the possibility that it might be coming from the hard drive, and back up all your data ASAP. And post back or call Apple if you're under warranty.
    Good luck!

    I just got my Mac book Pro but for some reason when I run graphic intesive apps the fan makes a noise, it almost sounds like a rattle snake is in my laptop. Anyone else having this issue?

  • Mac book pro making noise,we deleted most programs noise persists

    Mac book pro has been making noise for some time,we deleted many programs that might affect it.Still problematic.Thoughts?

    Noise makers on a MBP are the fan(s), hard drive and DVD drive.  Run an Apple hardware test and see if it picks up any problems:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
    Open the MBP and see if there is and dirt or debris inside, particularly in the fans.  If so, clean it out.
    If no success on the afore mentioned, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • Reporting of the Mac Book Pro whining noise issue - how?

    Hi,
    My MacBook Pro is emitting a noise when the processor is idle. It's got all the updates and the problem did not go away.
    I was looking at the Apple Support site and could not seem to find a place to report this issue. Any idea where I should go?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    You may want to call Apple customer care and explain your problem. It is recognized now by Apple and they are issuing logic board updates.
    Some people report having more success by going to a brick and mortar Apple store and making an appointment at the Genius bar though.
    It is really your choice.

  • Lion versus Snow Leopard, a new MAC Book Pro series coming?

    My son is looking for a new laptop. He would opt for function over portability. Therefore larger MAC Book Pro makes sense but seems as if MAC Book Air has newer operating system so concern is life.

    A MacBook Pro is more likely to support more games.
    A MacBook Air is more portable.  An addon Apple Thunderbolt display gives almost all the same ports as a Pro, but then it loses its portability.
    A MacBook Pro has more connections for digital cameras, and the 17" version also supports faster hard drives via its Express/34 port which can have external SATA added.  The 17" version though only fits on the tray tables of 737/700 and larger tray tables of airlines.  The Pro has a built-in optical drive, where the Air does not. The Air is 2 pounds lighter than the Pro.  On the other hand being more portable, it is easier to get stolen. I would consider Lapcop or Lojack for notebooks if one gets a notebook.  The new operating system as my FAQ* explains still has numerous applications which need upgrading:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html#LION
    You can through http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate get the new operating system later if you get a qualifying Mac.  That would give you a chance to upgrade when you desire, and still migrate any data to newer applications when you need to.  The real question is, what sort of compatibility is needed?
    As for your subject line, Apple does not pre-announce hardware updates except on rare occasions, and we can't speculate as to when they might release a new one.  Watch http://www.apple.com/pr/
    Once they do, it likely won't work with Snow Leopard.

  • Mac Book Pro with a separate apple keyboard (wired) randomly the keyboard will make a thudding noise like a key is depressed and then freezes

    Hi I'm using a Mac Book Pro with a separate apple keyboard (wired).  Randomly the keyboard will make a thudding noise like a key is depressed and stuck (which it isn't) which then stops when the keyboard is unplugged.  I've tried rebooting, plugging it into another port and unplugging  my mouse from it and it hasn't solved the issue.  I also can't pin point when it does it, it seems to be random so sometimes, like now it's fine and then others it does it every few minutes.  I'm reluctant to throw the keyboard out if there is a chance it can be fixed.  Any ideas?

    You cannot use any additional devices on the keyboard's USB ports when used in this fashion (except perhaps ONE low power Apple mouse). Anything more draws too much power and may make the keyboard malfunction. In general, keyboards do not tend to complain about low power, they just stop working properly.

  • Is normal in the mac book pro with the retina make fan noise al the time ?

    Is normal that the new macbook pro with retina make fan noise all the time?

    Hi everyone.
    I just bought an mac book pro retina , 15 inches , 2 GHz, Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3. I'm a programmer , so, I really don't give to the mac book an exhaustive use, so the performance of the machine is good for me. But recently , I discovery some kind of issue : a noise fan when I reproduce a video from Internet, in full screen mode.
    I download the iStatus Menus program for mac, to has a complete dashboard of the situation , and I got this :
    1) When recently start the mac book, the statistics are
    All in order, the revolutions of the fan are OK, no fan noise at all.
    But , just opened a video in full screen , a few seconds after opened start it, the machine increase the temperature from (normal) 40° to 98° (so high), and the statistics change dramatically , as follow :
    As you can see, the fan revolution increase 3x , from  2000 to 6000 . The use of Google Helper increase over 200% . And obviously the noise fan make me crazy,
    I've only seen this "issue" on that scenario, ( internet video full screen reproduction ). That's not happen , even when many applications are open.
    Should I worry about this ?,  or, this is a normal behaviour on the machine ?.
    I'll appreciate any advice or answer.
    Kindly regards.

    It may very well be a RAM issue but possibly something else.  Look over this extensive troubleshooting document for a possible solution:

    You may try to restart your computer in Safe mode by taking these steps:
    - Click on the Apple sign() at the upper left corner of the Desktop, select 'Shut down' from a drop-down menu;
    - Wait until your computer turns off, then press the Power button(⌽);
    - Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift(⇧) key. It should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone;
    - Release the Shift(⇧) key when you see a grey Apple sign() and the progress bar below;
    This will force the system to perform several maintenance routines and load essential system software.
    Once you've seen the Desktop, start a Disk Utility scan to detect and repair file system errors:
    - Open Disk Utility application:
    1. Click on Finder at the bottom of your Desktop;
    2. Select Applications folder from Finder's left sidebar and then open Utilities folder (or press Command(⌘)-Shift(⇧)-U), double-click on Disk Utility icon;
    - Choose your main hard drive from the left sidebar ('Macintosh HD', usually);
    - Click on 'Verify Disc' at the bottom right corner, your Mac will perform a diagnostic test. Click on 'Repair Disk' if prompted to fix problems, or follow instructions given on the Disk Utility window;
    - Once the routine finished, click on ""Verify Disc Permissions"", after it's done, click on 'Repair Disc Permissions';
    - Wait until the process's finished and shut down your Mac, turn it back on in 30 seconds;
