My mac book pro shuts down when I connect external displays.

I use my macbook pro for projecting keynote presentations and also to a 90" monitor.  I've been able to do this until the lastest software update.  Now the computer shuts down when I connect to the projector and monitor.  I'm at witts end.  Regretting I did latest update. Thanks for any help.

Have you reset the SMC and PRAM?

  • My MacBook Pro shuts down when i connect a USB cable.

My MacBook Pro shuts down when  i connect a USB cable, only when its a 30 pin apple cable. Well one USB shuts it down and the other one doesn't work at all.
it only happens when i use an apple cable. It has no problem with my external drive nor with other things.
Ps. i did use different apple cables and they all shut it down.

What are you connecting? iPad, iPhone, what?
When you say a 30-pin Apple cable do you mean a Lightening to USB cable?
    Little more info needed...

  • My Mac book pro Shuts down unexpectedly

This problem started barely last night, when I was using my Mac book pro when suddenly it shut down. The first thing that came up to my mind was that it was a battery issue, but I have notice that the laptop only shuts down when I type something in the keyboard. Could this be caused by the keyboard, or is a battery issue, or is it something else more serious?

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.
Resetting the System Management Controller >>
Also, note the exact time the issue happens and check your System logs in your Console application for clues to the cause.

  • 2007 Mac Book pro Shuts down at startup attempt. Tried reloading OSX and will not start up after that.

My Mac Book Pro started having issues. I tried to relaod the operating system and it worked for a moment. When I tried to do a time machine back up it failed.
Now itr Shuts down at startup attempt. Tried reloading OSX and will not start up after that.

    Dr.Conga,
did you try to do a Time Machine backup from your MacBook Pro, or a Time Machine restoration to it?
Are you trying to reload your current version of OS X (10.7.4, to judge from your signature), or are you trying to reload the version of Mac OS X that came on the grey installation DVDs that originally came with your MacBook Pro?

  • Mac book Pro shutting down by itself

More than once when I have closed the lid to my mac book pro it shut itself down and rebooted for no reason. All I would have open is firefox or safari and when I get back I get the log in window asking for my password. I have it set to never go to sleep so I have no idea what is causing it to do this.

I have it set to never go to sleep
The Energy Saver preference pane settings only apply to time with the lid open. Regardless, it will go to sleep when you close the lid, unless you have deactivated that via Terminal commands or 3rd party hacks.
and when I get back I get the log in window asking for my password
Are you sure it reboots? If you close the lid, go away, then come back and it asks for your login password, maybe in System Preferences > Security the require password to wake from sleep is checked...

  • Mac book pro shuts down playing COD2

i've been playing COD2 for a while on my G5, but poor frame rates got me trying my mac book pro... was quite happy to find frame rates 2X or 3X better than my G5.. however, after i play the game for 15 minutes or so the mac book pro just shuts off.
i figured it was a heat-related problem, so i went out and bought one of those cooling fans that you sit the laptop on... but that has done no good whatsoever....
i get between 10 mins and 30 mins of playing before the mac book pro just shuts off.
sometimes it gets hot, sometimes not.. sometimes it's even shutting off without the fans kicking in..
anyone have any insight? please help!
    thanks

My "battery problem" started exactly like that. When I was playing a game my MBP suddenly shut down. First, after an hour of game play, then half an hour, then after ten minutes finally at start-up.
Until my MBP just started acting out even if I wasn't playing and finally refused to even boot up on battery or then just shut down immediately after I removed the power cord.
Chances are your problem is something else, but it might not be. I just got my battery replaced yesterday, haven't tried to play on it yet. Otherwise it works.

  • Why won't my Mac Book Pro shut down?

My Mac Book pro isn't shuttting down. I've clicked the apple icon on the left > shutdown. But nothing happens it just shows this rainbow wheel for a few  seconds. I can't also control my volume and screen brightness with my keys any more and system preferences is not responding.. Help! Please!
    Thank you!

Alright.., I will try this and hope i´ll do it right. My (a little older ) MacBook Pro has the same problem, it just wont shut down. Things works kind of fine until I shall shut it down, cause then the wheel will spin and spin and spin (and it goes to sleep still spinning), so it must be some corrupted files or app that is stuck. I just bought MacOs10.6.3 to reinstall or recover the harddrive, but I´ve never done these things on a Mac before. I have formated in Windows alright, but I am worried about the drivers, I dont know how to back them up! ??? Where do I find them? I hope I dont have to wipe the disc out fully, that it helps with just some cleaning up. I will come back after my "operation".. please wish me good luck! I really dont want it to crash completely.. Thank you for all the information I had here. See you soon.. '

  • Mac book pro shuts down  without warning

So I have the mid 2012 mac book pro 13 inch and recently its been turning off randomly without warning and I tried resetting the pram and smc and it didnt do a thing plus when I click on the battery icon on top menu bar it usually says service or replace battery but now no error comes up and sometimes it will go from about 0 percent back to 100 percent   but the strange part about this whole thing is that when the computer shuts off and I turn it back on the battery is still at 100 percent

You should take it in to an authorized service place for testing/service.

  • Mac book pro shuts down by it's self?

My mac book pro will randomly shut down by its self. I dont know why, but it will restart after shutting down and give me a message saying would you like to report this problem and I always say yes and there has been no contact with me about the system problem. I received this laptop in August 2012 so it is relatively new.
Another question I have is how would I change the graphic settings on my Mac Book pro? I want to play the Sims3, but it says to change graphics?

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Mac Book Pro shuts down suddenly

I have been using my mac book pro without problems. All of a sudden I cant move the mouse anymore and the computer shuts down. It will restart itself with a message that reads something like your computer is restarting in 15 seconds or so but click anywhere to get in. Its just weird. I dont see any problems other than it does say I need to service battery. So is this the intial problem or is it something else? What can I do? Am I damaging my computer if I need a new battery? Help please....!

first if you are getting message that your battery needs service, you want to get it looked at either by going to apple store or service provider.
try doing an SMC reset, the following article tells how:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after this reset restart the computer and see if it works normally if it doesn't see below.
second regarding the restart of your computer, it could be a kernel panic. the following article tells how to troubleshoot this issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
if after following this article the mac continues to restart try running the apple hardware test to see if there is a hardware issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
if none of the above steps resolve your issue i would take to apple store or service provider to have it serviced.

  • My mac book pro shuts down just after it is started

My MacBook Pro shuts down straight after it has been started. A bar appears at the bottom of the screen that I've never seen before! A tiny part of it is filled, it disappears and the machine shuts down.

My suggestion is to work through the options here -> If your Mac won't turn on - Apple Support

  • HOT HOT HOT HOT!!! Mac Book Pro Retina, Mid 2012 with 2 external Displays HOT HOT HOT HOT!!!

    Hi,
i think i have a serious heat problem and i am a bit afraid of melting the mac book (It happend before with an older mac book pro, graphic card melted...yes, it did...)
    i own a Retina, Mid 2012
Processor  2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)
in use with 2 external Monitors, one TB Display and one Eizo (27" same resolution as TB) via display port and doing lots of stats with Stata and R on it and it get hot like **** (temperature monitor says around 95-100° degrees on graphic processor diod and around 80° on the chip.
furthermore, it creates kind of random kernel tasks with % CPU usage up to 500% (i read somewhere it does it to keeps internal cooling up...(??) ) and it is getting really slow... almost unusable.
Is this still healthy and the way it should be when i use it with 2 monitors?
Will i ruin it by using it like this all day long?
Apple says it could handle two displays. I think it can`t without killing itself on the long run (if you still USE it)
any ideas what to do? i allready use a cooling pad for it (cheap revoltec) but it does not really help, the macs and the pads fans run like crazy, its pretty noisy and gets really hot anyway
    Any experiences with 2 displays?
is there anything i can do about it?
    Better cooling pad solutions???
    Any other solutions??
    Any ideas welcome
    Thanks & Best
    Franz

Hm, i cannot reproduce the kernel_task thing right now, but this is my temp after working with 2 screens for 10 minutes. is this normal?
100° cpu, 96° on the diode, and 78 on GPU chip? it even was 82 once.
when do i reach critical limits?
    apple?

  • Mac Book Pro Shuts down on Battery Power

First, I apologize to everyone for asking this question yet again. I have gone through the previous posts and I am still at a loss. So thank you for your patience and help.
When I run my MacBook pro on battery power it will run for around 15 - 20 minutes... then just be dead. No low battery warning. No shut down. Just poof and gone.
I have looked at my power settings to see if my battery is bad. But I don't have a Status indicator in there. I see This:
    System Power Settings:
    AC Power:
    System Sleep Timer (Minutes): 0
    Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 0
Automatic Restart On Power Loss: No
    Wake On AC Change: No
    Wake On Clamshell Open: Yes
    Wake On LAN: Yes
    Display Sleep Uses Dim: Yes
    Battery Power:
    System Sleep Timer (Minutes): 0
    Disk Sleep Timer (Minutes): 10
    Display Sleep Timer (Minutes): 0
    Wake On AC Change: No
    Wake On Clamshell Open: Yes
    Display Sleep Uses Dim: Yes
    Reduce Brightness: Yes
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1185
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1185
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12426
    Cycle Count: 174
    AC Charger Information:
    Connected: Yes
    Charging: No
    Hardware Configuration:
    UPS Installed: No
I have also looked at the directions on http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1490 about how to calibrate my battery. It says:
" 1. Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook's battery until the light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.
    2. Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.
    3. Disconnect the power adapter while the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low, the low battery warning dialog appears on the screen.
    4. At this point, save your work. Continue to use your computer; when the battery gets very low, the computer will automatically go to sleep.
    5. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.
    6. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again."
Only I have a problem withe step 3 and 4. I don't get the warning, and it doesn't go to sleep. So, I don't think any calibration is working.
Do I need a new battery? Should I just buy one? This computer is WAY out of warranty and I never purchased and apple care plan for it.
Again, than you for any and all advice on what I may need to do.

I think it's time to buy a new battery
