My mac book pro wont boot up

i turned my mac book pro off, and now it wont boot. i try reinstalling os but it wont let me.its showing it in the disk utilty, now it wont let me install.it says mac os x cannout startup from this disk. What do i do?

I can't help you until you answer the questions I asked. If you want to reinstall Snow Leopard then follow these instructions:
Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • My Mac Book Pro wont boot fully.

my MacBook pro won't boot fully. it seems to be frozen in the first page that appears (the grey one with the apple symbol). i left it there for hours to see if it was just updating. does anyone know of there's a master reset button? I'm not concerned with losing data. thanks!

Forget that software, it's of no assistance.
Read my User Tip here, especially about "Gray Screen"
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3046
If this is all too much for you, or the Shift key on boot doesn't fix it, then perhaps consider hiring the assistance of a local PC/Mac specialist to make sure your data is recovered from both Windows and OS X.
Gray Screen issues can be quite complex to repair. It could be a simple kext file conflict (if so Shift key boot should get you in, then update all your software or check with the developers for updates)
If not it could be far worse, all depends how skilled you are with Mac's and what you have backed up etc.
If no backup, then your looking at data recovery efforts using another Mac or OS X on a external drive, no easy task.
PC/Mac specialists use a special Linux disk/USB to boot the computer and can transfer files out of either Windows or OS X.
Unfortunatly they keep it complex, so users can't use it themselves.

  • I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and somehow it crashes the mac side peridoically.  I am told I need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the recovery drive.  will that delete the windows partition too??

I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows.  I upgraded to Lion and now the mac side crashes/freezes periodically, especially iphoto.  I am told by the genius' that I probably need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the "recovery drive" which resets everything back to default and reinstalls the lion operating system.  My question is will this also delete the "windows" partition drive and all that data too.  If so that will be a huge pain in the ___ to back up and reinstall boot camp and windows. I want to shoot the lion.

There is no system like Acronis for the Mac platform. You can try using the buiilt in Disk Utility to create an Image of the complete Mac drive but I have found that this does not work very well as on tryiing to restore it gives errors sometimes.
You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable Clone of your system partition. But that is only for the System partition and not the complete drive.
If you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac neither of those two programs will clone the Windows side.
Neither will Disk utility as Mac's can not create or write to a NTFS partition. So some other program is need for that.

  • Mac Book Pro on boot up, the apple sign will appear with the spinning wheel.  After some time, a grey screen wil appear with a movable mouse, but will not boot up.  Help!

Mac Book Pro on boot up, the apple sign will appear with the spinning wheel.  After a period of time the screen will turn grey, but the mouse will still operate, but not boot up.

If it was purchased brand new then it's running a version of Lion, so to reinstall Lion:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.

  • Boot Camp Mac Book Pro Can Boot to Win 8.1 but not Mavericks

My Mac Book Pro Mavericks partition is damaged and I cannot boot to it, I can boot to Windows 8.1 without any issues.    Disk repair did not fix the problem, any suggestions?   I also tried using Migration Assistant to from my iMac to the Mac Book pro, had no luck there either, since Migration assistant being run on the iMac could not find another Mac.

You can upgrade to Windows 8.1 for free. Just open the Windows Store in Windows 8 and you will see an option to download Windows 8.1 update. The update may take several hours.

  • Mac book pro wont run apple hardware test

    Hi,
I have several problems with my Mac book Pro. Problems started so that I couldn't sign in to my account, three other account worked quite normally. I did run disk utility to fix problems that there was. That didn´t fix account problem. Then I tried to install SnowLeopard again, but it hangs after a while.
Hardware test programs starts and immediatelly after that computer shuts power off.
Here is the problem from installer.log (at least I think that here is the problem) But I can not say, what causes the problem

I wonder if it a permission issue?
Maybe chmod 777 the correct files would help
Not sure which files but you did have an error which says it cant write due to being read on. Are you the admin of the laptop and are able to mod all the files?
I could be wrong but just an idea.
Have you also tried to re-download the OS you are trying to install in case it is corrupt?

  • Mac book pro wont load.

    Hi,
I've been having this problem for the past few days with my mac it started to run slow and then freezing at times. This is kind of an on going problem when I have to shut it down, it takes ages to load up to 2 hours. This is with me turning it off and on but last night it stopped loading it goes past the grey screen with the apple and on to a blue screen which it stays on the tone of the blue will change and the cursor will appear on it every now and again but it will disappear and come back on after a while. os x disk that came with it. This is in the disk drive but I cant seem to get it to work or eject I don't know what I'm doing with macs as I am still very new to it.
    any suggestions?
The mac is a mac book pro running 10.5.8 leopard.

    Hi John,
I'm not sure I understand all of your post. Based on what I think you're saying, it sounds like a dying HD. Shut down your MBP (hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds if it won't shut down). If the install disc is already in your optical drive (sounds like it), then hold down the c key and press the power button while continuing to hold down the c key until you see “Preparing Installation”)>at first screen select the language and click Continue> click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar>open Disk Utility>select your HD in the panel on the left side>click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself).

The clasp that keeps my mac book pro closed when I'm not using it has suddenly stopped working. I can't get it to stay shut now. Does anybody know what causes this and whether it is covered by the one year warranty or if it can be fixed simply?
    Thanks for your time.

how long have you had the notebook?
i had the problem with the left clasp not coming down, but this was on delivery. Having only one clasp will eventually lead to the lid becoming bowed over time. I would get it seen to asap. not sure if its covered, it should be tho as its a manufacturing defect, and don't let them tell you otherwise. One clasp will lead to bowing. see picture enclosed:
