My mac computer keeps freezing
Hi,
My Dad is having trouble with our Mac computer. When he goes onto a website the computer stops working and it doesn't open the webpage or links within the webpage. All other computers in the house are working, so is there any particular reason for this?
Many thanks for any suggestions
Angry fathers daughter

My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power supply (when I plug it to the outlet), BEFORE I switch on the button on the computer, why is this happening? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out and I'm forced to restart it, that's when the compter starts on its own when I turn on the power.
Hello Engender,
I should have followed up with a progress report because I eventually eliminated all the problems I was having with my Mac Pro, now it's behaving like a new computer… beautifully. I did originally take Grant's advice above, changing the setting that I had in the System Preferences > Energy Saver but that only stopped from rebooting on its own when I shut down my Mac properly. Otherwise it continued to restart on its own after freezing or crushing when I switched on the power. I took my machine to the Apple Store and after many tests they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I was very depressed about the whole business.
It was after going onto many of the other Apple related websites that I discovered that it wasn't a faulty power switch or fan, as as I originally thought, but found out that my problem was related to the Graphic Card and possibly I did not have enough ram (I had the original amount of 2 GB). The original card that came with the computer: 512 MB ATI Radeon X1900 XT was over heating and forcing my machine to shut down, I think it was because I had upgraded to OSX Lion which on its own requires at least 2 GB of ram to operate well. I added 4 GB of Ram to the 2GB I had (4GB kit (2GBx2), Apple 240-pin FBDIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 upgrades for Apple Mac Pro (4-core) 1st Gen. - 2006-2007 Desktop/PC, CT579443 from Crucial.com about $160 for the set) and replaced the Graphic Card with ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB from Apple (around $260), (ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010) - Apple Store (U.S.)) This card works very well with my original Mac Pro 2008. I installed it about two weeks ago and no problem with it starting on its own, over heating or freezing. OSX Lion works well and I'm thinking of upgrading to Mountain Lion once I learn that my Mac Pro 1.1 will work with the new hardware I installed.
Your problem could just be the power cord but I agree with you that doesn't sound right, when I mentioned faulty switch I meant the part where the power cord meets the power button, the unit which houses the power distribution, I thought at first that it could be faulty but changed my mind because of the computer overheating.
I don't know if this is of any help to you but I hope your trouble will be solved with the new cord. -
Installed new Ram & 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing.
I have mac book pro from 2006 (1.83ghz) I recently installed 2 new 1G ram chips from crucial for a total ram of 2G. I am running osx 10.6. and 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing. Could it be that 10.6 is too much for the processor?
10.6 is not "too much for" your MBP. You may have gotten a faulty RAM module — it happens.
Start your machine up while holding down the D key, and when Apple Hardware Test appears, select the Extended Test. Run the extended test at least once all the way through, if you can, and post back with the exact text of any error message it reports.
If the test can't be completed, you definitely have a hardware problem, and the first suspect is the new RAM. In that case, reinstall the RAM that originally came in your machine and run the extended test again. If it is completed without errors this time, the Crucial RAM is clearly at fault and should be exchanged. -
# Question
My computer keeps freezing on me every 15 min do i have a virus I was told when you have mozilla firefox you don't need virus protection is that true and how can I scan if I have a virus and now do i get rid of it? editStart Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
* [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

See if DU works this way... 10.7 or greater, reboot holding CMD+r keys & use Disk Utility from there for Repairing Drive.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode, like stalls, beachballs, etc...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts? -

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now my computer keeps freezing. How to fix?
I upgraded to Mountain Lion and nowmy computer keeps freezing. How do I fix this?
I know you have 10.8.4. I'm asking you to download and install a Combo updater. This is not the same updater used through the App Store when you simply upgraded from 10.8.3. And, before you do that I suggest you do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu. -
I have a imac 10.6.8 with snow leopard. Just upgraded to iphoto 11 Now my computer keeps freezing up mostly if my iphone is connected. It even freezes in safari. Can i get my money back and unistall
This forum is for people to discuss issues with other users. Apple aren't here. No one here can give you your money back. So, contact the the App Store support, if that's where you bought it. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store window.

my computer keeps freezing and i dont know whats wrong, or why it keeps freezing
It's happening on FIrefox too. It's not a browser issue! I have tried all, Chrome, FIrefox and IE and it freezes after about 5 minutes sometimes sooner, sometimes you get a little longer, but not much.

HELP PLEASE! I am working with GH4 4k footage in adobe preimere and the computer keeps freezing... any ideas?
Thanks for your response. I'm sorry for the lack of details, but posting a question on this forum is completly new to me, so I guess I am learning how it works.
I have to be honest, I am a novice to video editing, but I am here to learn so I will provide all the info I know and please let me know if it is enough...
I filmed my first feature film on a Panasonic GH4. We filmed in 4k (compressed files). I am about 900 GB of total files for all the footage. I am currently editing on a 17' Toshiba Satellite i7 with 750 GB of space and I believe 8 gb of ram. All of the footage for the film is not on the computer, but stored on a 1 TB external hardrive (Rugged Lacie is the name of the hard drive). I am using a usb 3.0 from the hard drive to the computer.
I actually was able to get through about 17 mins of edits for the film before I started to experiencing the computer completely freezing up on me. I tried using a different hard drive, and same issue. A friend mentioned it might just be the computer is not powerful enough to edit all the footage, but he wasn't for sure considering the computer is less than a year old and is on the higher end for a toshiba.
I am requesting advice on how to continue editing the film without the computer crashing if that is even possible with using the same computer. If not what would be my options?
Thank you! -
My brand new mac pro keeps freezing
Hi, i have recently just bought a Mac Pro from the apple store, i have only had it about a week and half.
whenever i am using the computer, it keeps freezing on me everything stops working apart from the mouse, at first i thought it might because i have too many programmes open but it happens even when I'm doing a simple task, most of the time it takes 2-3 minutes till it kicks back in and starts working but sometimes i have to turn the mac off by the power button as it takes so long. would be great if someone could help me, as i said its brand new so something like this should not be happening.
many thanks,
lukeIf you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

My G4 keeps freezing up.
It sounds like it's spinning down. Sometimes preceding by a whiny clicking noise.
Occasionaly it comes back to life but usually have to force shut down.
Temperature is fine
I have run disc utility and Zapped PRAM
Have unpluuged and left for 2 days
All to no avail
Any ideas?
Can it be saved or is it time to bid a fond farewell to a trusty mac?Hi! It's hard to say exactly. Usually a freeze is caused by ram but your symptoms sound more like a failing hard drive. A "whine" is usually a hard drive and noticeable clicks that haven't been there before is a good sign the hard drive is either severally corrupted or failing. What results did you get when you ran the disk utility? Tom

Mac pro keeps freezing up.
i have installed a crucial ssd in my mac pro (2.66 Ghz Quad core Intel Xeon). I am running OS 10.6.8. I have read about issues of freezing with ssds with hibernation, and have put my settings so the computer doesn't hibernate. I am trying to back up all of my pictures and videos. It takes so long, however, that the computer will freeze before I can complete my backup. I've tried to run time machine... same problem. If I do a hard reset, the computer works without a problem.
Until you get your backups done, use
system preferences > Energy Saver ...
set computer sleep to NEVER (extreme right) and uncheck Put Hard Disks to sleep when possible.
Once your backups are done you can adjust those settings.
Non-Apple SSD drives accumulate old data that Mac OS X marked as deleted and added to the free pool, but did not Zero.
Over time, your SSD drive will choke on this stuff unless you do something to Zero it out. TRIM Enabler by groths seems to be mature enough now that it can be trusted not to do damage, but your mileage may vary. You will still need backups of anything you cannot re-create.
You can also use a third-party tool to consolidate free space and then immediately write free space with Zeroes. This takes time and enrgy, while TRIM Enabler seems to "just work". -
Why does my computer keep freezing after waking from "sleeping"?
I'm running Lion (10.7.2) and frequently, not everytime, but often, the computer will freeze about 1-2 min after I've woken it from sleep – there are usually 1-2 applications open and then I can work for about a couple minutes and then it freezes and the only way to resolve it is to power it off w/ the power button and then restart.
I've got a late 2008 15" MacBook Pro, 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM – there is very little on the hard drive, but that seems irrelevant here anyway.
