The way I moved from 10.3.9 to 10.5.8 was to use "ditto -rsrc" and copy the user homes and the data share to an external firewire drive. Then did the same in reverse.
I found the key to data and share permissions to make sure that the users had the same UID in Leopard that they had in Panther.
You can then use "sudo rm -rf" to remove any folder from the relocated homes that you want. Remember if you do choose to remove "~/Library" from each users relocated home, you will be removing any iCal calendars, login.keychains, browser bookmarks, custom screensavers and wallpapers, etc.
Users don't really care if they can login and do any work. But there will be much wailing, gnashing of the teeth, and anxiety, if they lose their bookmarks and wallpaper.

After upgrading the OS to 10.6.8, my Skype clashes when open and iMail crashes when trying to attach Pages File !?? What happen?

Changeing Valuation class-what happens to deleted open docs.

Hello,
we are planning to change the valuation class for material. In order to change the class we would have to delete all open items that trace back to the material (PO, GR, IR). I run me2m to identify the open documents for that material.
My issue is when I reverse or delete the IR, GR, and PO what happens to the those documents.? We have documents that go back to 2007.
Do we have to recreate the PO, GR, IR after we change the class.?What are the long term effects when doing this change (Audit)?

You don't need to worry about old documents as long as they are not open.
You just need to invoice out all the open GRs or cancel all those GRs. In case of POs, you have to ensure the GR qty is equal to IR qty for each PO line, then you can mark the line as deleted so that the system will allow you to change the val. class. You also need to make the stock to zero.
Once val. Class is changed, you can undo all the above.

Changing Apple ID - what happens to apps?

We want to change our Apple ID on one of our devices - my boss is passing one of his iPads to his kids - to ensure that the apps are not synced between the bosses main device and the children's device.
What happens to the apps currently on the device? He bought some apps specifically for the kids using the shared ID, and he's wondering if he'll have to make another purchase.

Apps are always tied to the ID that was used to purchase them. If you change Apple ID's, you will have to purchase them again with the new ID.
The apps will remain on the iPad and you can continue to use them, but if you want to update them, you will have to use the old ID for that.
I don't know of that answers your question, because I don't get the correlation between what "we are changing an Apple ID on one of our devices" and "the boss is giving one of the iPads to his kids". I must be missing something in your explanation.

2 Mac and different mediathek content, what happens when activativating iTM

I consider activating iTM, but have one question beforehand. I have more then one Mac, all run with the same itunes id, but due to adding differnent CD to different MAc, the mediathek of the different macs are not identical. Does iTM consolidate all Data, or what happens?
Is there a smart solution to find out the difference between two mediathek data bases?

Yes, iTunes Match will "consolidate" the different libraries, for lack of a better term. When you activate the service, add one computer at a time and let the scan, match and upload process complete on one before adding another. This will ensure things go smoothly.

If I change Apple ID what happens

My wife and I both have iPhones; hers is a 4 and mine is a 4s and we both have our own Apple IDs. If we change her ID to match mine

I activated Filevault, and now all my settings and files are gone. What happened?

I decided to activate Filevault on my macbook, and now that it is complete with encrypting my home folder, and deleting the unencrypted one, I have nothing. None of my documents are here, all of my settings are wiped. The only thing that remains are my installed programs. What happened? Also, when I go to "Security," it says Filevault is off, and when I turn it on, it tries to re-encrypt my home folder. What is happening?!

I don't know if it will work on Vista or 7.. I have Win 7 on my laptop but haven't tried it yet since the restore feature in it is different from XP.
If your lucky enough to have set your windows "system restore" in a regular basis like mine. You can use it and it will recover all your bookmarks and saved passwords. Then you can screen capture all your saved passwords and export your bookmarks for future use. Compress it with winRAR and encrypt it with your most common password so that no can easily hack it.
Do it at your own risk, don't blame me if something happens to your computer. My restore date is only 1 day old.. If your restore point is a week or a month old, it can affect your computer since a lot of updates have been applied in your system. After I did it, I had a problem with my Antivirus, I just uninstalled it and reinstall. I don't know of other thing that can happen in your case. I'm just trying to help and give you an option. Maybe you can also save another restore point before doing so..
Note: After doing this, Aurora will still appear since you restored your system. If you try uninstalling it again and doesn't respond. Try to install it again and choose upgrade. Run it for a while or leave it as it is, it doesn't matter. Then go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it again. Now, don't click the "Remove minefield personal data" as posted by "the-edmeister".

When you installed iTunes on your work computer, then connected your iPad to that computer, it wiped what was on the iPad, then put the iTunes library (nothing) from the work computer onto the iPad. You can try copying the iTunes folder from your home computer over to your work computer, but since the apps were bought with a different account, they may not load or update properly.

Mac extremely slow overnight. What happened?

Ok so basically I have had my mac for about 2 years now. Very happy, no problems everything working fine. Yesterday, I was unistalling unused software such as istatsmenu (took too much space of the bar). Then I also have Magican. Because I was sort of paranoid about malware and stuff like that, I did a quick clean to free up space, then i enabled this option called live protection or something. Anyways after I did a full scan of the system and let it run overnight. In the morning, it wasn't done yet (must have stopped) so i finished it and then it restarted. Here's the problem:
The boot up took around 5 minutes.
After booting, even getting to the password input screen must of take around half a minute.
To select the password field took another half minute.
At this point I knew something was very, very wrong.
Getting to the desktop took another 2 - 5 minutes. After that basically nothing worked. It took around 1 minute to open a finder window. "Launchpad" was "Loading Apps" for around 10 minutes. Everything was extremely unresponsive. Spinning rainbow circles everywhere and everytime I clicked something. It was horrible.
I called up a friend who is good with computers. He told me go into activity monitor. We looked, nothing out of the ordinary.
I tried, after many minutes of waiting to uninstall magican. That worked. Still very slow
Finally I decided to boot into safe mode. That helped tremedously. It wasn't slow anymore but obviously it was in no condition to work on. I then went on to use ccleaner to clean the computer and uninstall all startup apps. I repaired my disk, but apparently it didn't have any problems. Permissions got repaired too.
Now I'm in safe mode. Normal mode is unusable. Nothing works. I'm freaking out. Please help.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

MPEG 3 Files Suddenly Appeared! What Happened?

I am running iTunes on a Windows 7 machine. Earlier this month I noticed that Carbonite was working overtime. What I found was that literally every song file I ripped to my machine over the past two years as an MPEG-4 file has been duplicated as an MPEG-3 file. The "created dates" on the new files are all since September 5. Most were in the same folder, some were created in a duplicate folder. I now have 200 GB of duplicate files! I don't think I made any changes to my settings.

My Save Files Keep Disapearing. Whats happening?

My Save Files from Logic Pro 9.1.3 keep disapearing... I loose all my work. I could save some of my progress if I use the back up files, but sometimes it doesnt even make back up so often and I end up loosing everything.
What do I do?

Do you have the Sony VAIO Entertainment Platform installed and running on your computer? If you do, it might be conflicting with iTunes.

Can Timecode on Timeline be changed? and what happened to forum 'search'?

Is there any way I can change a sequence so the beginning timecode starts at some value other than 0:00:00?
Did Apple just change the way to search a forum? The only search option I now see seems to search the entire website.

In FCE all sequences are generated starting at timecode 00:00:00:00.
If you want to make the exported sequence start at a different timecode (say 00:01:00:00) you can move all its clips to its right as much as needed (by 00:01:00:00), and then set the sequence IN point to 00:01:00:00. Only the IN to OUT section will be exported and its first frame will have timecode 00:01:00:00.
