My mac freezes when i plug in my flash drive.

I want to know if this is a serious problem, or if i need an update or something. It was working fine a few hours ago with the flash drive and everything, but i just plugged in the flash drive again, and EVERYTHING froze. the mouse would still move around, though, but i couldnt click anything.

Did you properly unmount the flash drive the last time you used it? I have never heard of a flash drive causing a system crash. if it was not ejected properly, than it is very possible that the data on it got corrupted and that when you tried to mount it the system simply could not read the data and it tied up all the processor cycles attempting to do so. If the spinning beachball was present then the system did not crash, rather the processor was completely tied up trying to read the data on the drive. It probably would have eventually give you an error message and offered to reformat the drive.
More than likely you will need to reformat the flash drive. How you will do it is another question if you cannot mount it or cannot get the Disk Utility program to see the drive so it can be reformatted.
What I would try is starting up from my system CD, when booted from it insert the flash drive, open Disk Utility. If the flash drive is present, select it and see if DU can repair it. If not, just reformat it.

  • Finder/Itunes freezes when I plug in external hard drive.

I can't view the files on the harddrive or eject it and get an error -8072 when I try to eject. Time machine back up does not work either it just says preparing for backup for a long time. This started happening two days ago but it was fine before that

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Hello there, sarhang27753.
First thing that would come to mind to resolve the issue would be SMC and PRAM resets. I've linked Knowledge Base articles below:

  • Pm Quick silver freezes when ipod plugged in

I have a power mac g4 quick silver 733mhz 768MB Ram running os 10.4.11  when i plug in ipod it freezes the computer.
I do not have any anti virus software running.
This also happens when i try to plug in 1gb flash drive  no matter which USB  port i use.
I am baffled...any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Yes, run DU first.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
If it does it in both then it would seem to be a Hardware problem... iPod, cable, Mac???

  • Mac Crashed when i plugged in usb drive.

When i plugged in the usb drive, system flashed error message and rebooted. This happen twice, whenever i tried using USB drive.

    Hey sandipnirmal,
Maybe the USB HD is corrupt, or at least the partition?  I once had a USB HD that I plugged into my laptop and the same thing happened.  You might want to see if it will come up on another computer, and if it does, try backing up all of your data, and reformatting the drive, then putting your data back and trying to reconnect to your Mac.  I mean it might be last case scenario but it's worth a shot if you have the time.

Since the release of Mavericks (OS X 10.9) syncing contacts and calendars with a Mac via iTunes is no longer supported. The currently supported method is via iCloud. Setup instructions: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

  • Zen Micro Freezes when USB plugged

My 5 day old Zen Micro 6 GB freezes when I plug it in with the USB cable. It freezes on the "Now Playing" screen. And then I get a little window that pops up on my desktop saying "USB device not recognized." The only way to un freeze it is to remove the battery.
I've also found that if I turn the player on, and have it in Menu, NOT playing any song, it will dock fine.
    I'm using firmware 2..02.
    I've tried (in this order)
    Re-formatting with 2..02
    Disk Clean up
Uninstalling EVERYTHING on my PC and then reinstalling it
Still getting the same error. I'm running WIN XP SP2.
Anyone offer any advice?Message Edited by pi534 on 06-9-2005 06:44 PM

The same problem happens with my 5 gb Zen Micro. But I have noticed that, it happens when I plug it to an USB port with extension cord. It never happens when I use it through my laptop's USB but in my Uni'versity's lab when I plug it in the USB port which is in front of the case by using an extra cable, it freezes. I have to turn the case around and directly connect to the USB. I don't know why but that's the solution I found

  • Why does my airbook mac freeze when using external hard drive

This is a recent development, my MacBook Air freezes when I attach my external CD drive and I have to do a hard restart (hold the power button till it turns off). This never use to happen. Any suggestions? Cheers!

    Hi
Can anyone suggest what is happening and how to get around this? In worst case is there a way to move the files outside of imovie that will still allow them to be properly displayed within imovie?
I don't think that it can be done that way - BUT I KNOW that it can be very destructive
most probably end up as un-reparable.
The move of projects and events - works so much better in iMovie'09
