My Mac Gets Insanely Hot

My brand new MacBook Pro i7 is becoming very hot when I use flash or java (Minecraft is a big one) and lowers my battery to 40 mins on a full charge. I understand the flash and java may drain it a little, and make it a little hot, but you could cook stuff on the back of my mac. Is this normal???

Which model of MacBook Pro do you have? (processor speed, RAM, year model)
What speed are the fans running at ? (download something like iStat Pro, it will tell you)
There are a number of ways of making your MBP run cooler. Raise it from the surface its sitting on, preferably with a laptop stand - this will give it more room underneath for the heat to dissipate from the unibody case.
Check the rear exhaust vent isn't blocked with dust.
Consider using something like smcFanControl, increasing the fan speeds by 500-1000 rpm can dramatically reduce your temperatures with little added noise.
Running your Mac at high temperatures frequently for long periods will only reduce the lifespan of its components.
Even with an external monitor plugged in and discrete graphics in action, your Mac shouldn't be nearing the point where it is essentially cooking itself.
I am running the fans higher than their stock speed, at 3500 rpm each, and my temps are (when playing Flash video fullscreen on an external monitor):
CPU      35 C
GPU      41 C
HD        29 C
This is even when its using the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics!
However, at the stock fan speed of 2000 rpm it was running way hotter.
These temps are with a MBP Mid 2012 15" 2.3 GHz Core i7 on a Griffin Laptop stand.

All Apple power supplies work world-wide with the proper plug adapter.
I have my MacBook plugged into the grid all the time, 24 hours a day w/o any problems.

  • My mac gets real hot! Is this normal

I am new to mac. My mac getting real hot when i hv it on more than an hour, is this normal? Do i need to install a fan or something?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you have a 24" iMac with an ATI 4850? A recent firmware update became available for it, which may solve problems with that GPU:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iMac_EFI_Firmware_Update_14
If that's not the Mac do you have, please more clearly identify your Mac*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#IDENTIFY
So we can suggest the correct hardware test instructions, and then determine what is the cause. Also I suggest backing up your data*:

In event some troubleshooting risks your data.

When posting in Apple Communties/Forums/Message Boards.......It would help us to know which MBP model you have, which OS & version you're using, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by completing your system profile and filling in the information asked for.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Games make your computer work harder, generating more heat. You shouldn't be worried about this, because fans will turn on automatically when your Mac is hot. If you want to check the temperature of your computer, get Temperature Monitor

Yes, this is completely normal and it's nothing to worry about. Macs, and all computers really, get hot and the fans are used intensely when doing big tasks such as converting videos.
    Hope this helps,

  • Mac gets too hot?

This is the iMacs temperature wile doing online surfing and watching videos.

You have posted in the iWork > Pages for Mac community. I have requested the hosts to move your post over into the Mavericks community, where it will get better visibility.

  • I downloaded Mountain Lion and my mac gets very hot

    Is this normal?

I suppose it depends on how hot. Mountain Lion drive the CPU and GPU much harder than previous OS's, especially if you are coming from Snow Leopard.
My 2006 MacBook Pro got extremely hot when I ran Lion on it.

  • HT1529 why is mac mac book pro getting so hot?

why is my mac getting so hot?

The temperature usually is directly related to the load being placed on the system...what software are you running, multiple software?  Things like heavy duty games place a load by fully taxing he cpu and loading up the gpu to produce the display imaging.  Software that does very heavy graphics, things like ray tracing and rendering, put a full load on the cpu.
The cpu can run very hot, on the order of 100-110 deg, before thermal overload protection kicks in and runs bak the clock speed.  The system will start running up the fan speed to remove the excess heat.
So, how hot is the MBPr?  Warm to touch, hot to touch, uncomfortably hot to touch?

  • Macbook Pro case getting VERY hot!

This is my first Mac, but not my first laptop. Using it for 5 days, the temperature reads out at 85 degrees F. Currently, I am only running iDVD, Firefox, and Microsoft Messenger. The temperature jumped as high as 91 degrees at one point.
While doing simple tasks such as Messenger, and web browsing in firefox, it reads at 79 degrees F. IS this normal for a Mac? I hear that Macs get very hot, that hot? Should I be returning it because it has a problem?

"I hear that Macs get very hot, that hot? Should I be returning it because it has a problem?"
From whom did you hear this? During the past day or so, you have asked some very fundamental questions, and I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the computer's operation. There's a wealth of information available on Apple's website, and it behooves you to check it out.
Rather than worry about the temperature of individual components, you should spend your time enjoying - not worrying about - your computer. Your computer is operating normally. You should use the computer on a hard, flat surface, and be sure that the rear vent slot is unobstructed.

  • IMac gets really hot

    Hi everybody,
I have an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo and I usually leave it on for the entire day. Lately I've been noticing that it gets really hot on the top near the ventilation opening. The fans don't sound like they're working very hard, though.
Here are some stats from iStat:
    http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/2600/screenshot20100514at103.png
I am very concerned about this, I'm out of warranty.
Thank you very much for your advice,
    Jonathan Borichef

I have a new iMac 27" dual i7. This Mac gets so hot, I am concerned it could be a fire hazard or a danger. I shut it down when I am not around. This can't be normal, correct? I am taking it to Apple on Monday, is it possible I got a lemon? This seems to be a larger issue as I do research online about this heat problem with the iMac. Also, there is a smell from the computer as if something is overheating.
Is this a software or a hardware problem? It would be nice if I did not have to pack up the computer and haul it to the Apple Store. Plus the fan is very loud. I have been in the Apple Store and I don't feel any of these problems with there floor displays. Is there a problem with Apple's Quality Control? Also, because Apple is on top of the tech market right now are they getting sloppy with QC?
If you have answers or solutions please reply.
