My Mac has started to shut down unexpectedly since we installed google chrome. Any ideas?

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and also installed Google Chrome. Since then our Mac will shut down unexpectedly. Any ideas?

Hi, lindafrommendota.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your Mac restarts unexpectedly after the install of Google Chrome.  Here is a troubleshooting article that will walk your through some steps for this issue.  However, since this issue started once you installed a specific program, I would uninstall this program and test the results.
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

Cannot use any menus or dock icons. Tried turning off computer but message appeared asking 'am I sure'. If I press shut down button it doesn't respond. Any ideas? I was dropping multiple  clips into my movie/project when it happened.  It has been frozen for over an hour now. I can't hear the driving doing any work.

Thanks a lot. I had previously held the power button down and up popped the 'are you sure' message whhich provided a shut down button to press but it didn't work. Thanks for you help. I'll have a look in iMovie now to see if I've got any corrupted files. Thanks a lot

Which OS X is installed on your Mac ?
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac. The version is noted there.
Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.

I don’t know why this happens and with the information you have provided I doubt anyone can do so so with accuracy.

I recommend starting with a soft reset (pressing both home and power button until you see the apple then let go of the buttons) once you back on the home screen if you iPad still doing the same thing you may want to try a back up and restore

  • Mac Pro 3,1 Shuts Down Unexpectedly

My computer lately shuts down unexpectedly. It's not an overheat problem.
When I use skype, as soon as the video conversation starts, it shuts down.
When I try to resize a photo on Photoshop CS5, it shuts down. (I modified an OpenGL option, and I don't have this problem any more)
When I click with my mouse for the dashboard to come, it shuts down.
Could you please help me with this? I don't know what to do.
    Thank you.

I mean it powers off completely. No error message. Just the power goes off as if I shut it down myself with the normal procedure.
New development: I have two graphic cards: ATI Radeon 2600 and NVIDIA 8800.
With the NVIDIA I get shut downs when I view the dashboard, almost each time.
With the ATI I get shut downs sporadically. After one shut down, when I pressed the button to start the computer, it got to the phase when showing the white page with the Apple Logo, and it powered off. I waited 5-6 minutes and it is now running without any shut downs.
I believe it has something to do with the drivers. But I'm not sure. What steps should I follow to eliminate some aspects? What's your theory?
    Thank you for your time.

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) shuts down unexpectedly

I have a recurring problem with my Mac Pro (Early 2008). I put the computer to sleep; then, when I tap a few keys on the keyboard to wake it up, I hear the start-up sound and it boots up as if it were shut down.
This is particularly strange, because I do not have to use the "power" button on the tower to turn it on. When I tap the keys on the keyboard, as if to wake it from sleep, it makes the start-up sound and boots. I am guessing that somehow it is shutting off when I first try to wake it from sleep, and then must re-boot. But this is odd behavior that I've never seen from any Mac, and I've been using them for almost 20 years.
Any ideas? I'm going to call Apple Support but I always dread those long wait times and often fruitless conversations. I did not migrate information from my previous system; I took the time to manually migrate my files and reinstalled all apps from DVD specifically to avoid problems like this. Very frustrating.

I've noticed the same problem for one day with my new MP 2.8 dualquad, got a reboot after every sleep.
This solved the issue for me:
    • Reset the PRAM (Boot the machine and hold ALTCOMMAND+PR for 3 startup gongs)
    • Reset the SMC -> http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304123-en
    Good luck

  • IMac shuts down unexpectedly since Yosemite

So, I apologize in advance for the long story:
I have a late-2009 27" iMac i7 with 8gb Ram and a 1TB HD. I updated my OS to Yosemite soon after it came out. Now, I admit I don't use the computer that often, so it took a while to notice the issues but, we first realized there was a problem in early November when my husband could not download a game (presumably because of the wi-if connectivity issues supposedly fixed in the latest update). It was around a week after he finally was able to download tthe game, that he was playing it and the computer would just shut down out of nowhere. No warning, just shut down and restart with the "your computer shut down unexpectedly" screen. Now, because it happened so many times, I started to get worried about all of my photos and music that is stored on thIs computer, so I went to do a back-up on my time capsule. This was when I noticed my computer had at some point been renamed (not by any human) to "my Computer (3)" when prior to yosemite (as far as I can tell) it was named "my computer". Also at this point I could not for the life of me get the time capsule to back up the computer as it was looking for "my computer" and all that was available was "my computer (3)". This is when it had been working flawlessly for years. I ultimately had to wipe the TC completely, reformat it and start a back up from scratch. It was for the short period of time that the time capsule was not connected to the computer that we noticed it was no longer shutting down unexpectedly. however, one the TC was reconnected and doing a back up, anything extra that you would be doing (with the exception of web surfing) caused the computer to crash. So, simple fix, right? Turn off the auto back ups while and try to remember to turn them on every so often. fine , dandy, whatever. However, I have done the latest yosemite update and the wi-if still does not seem to be staying connected, disconnecting every few minutes. Now I'm seemingly having more issues with a game that is well within the limits for my computer and the game will not start. There are just so many things going wrong with the computer that I'm really concerned that everything is going to disappear off of it one day. Anybody have any clues as to my computer's issue??

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mac mini start up shut down code

I appreciate the two responses, from '300Tech' and TITOUMAX to my original question.
I was reluctant to take the "sudo halt" terminal suggestion since a warning loomed over the danger of losing data.
I was unable to post a copy of the code sequences suggested by TITOMAX since the problem was solved by the time I saw his post.
I received an answer from Apple.
I was able to halt display of start up and shut down code by shutting the Mac mini down and starting the machine while holding down  "cmd option PR" keys until the computer gave the normal start sound followed by a repeat of the start sound. This procedure led to a normal start up process and also a normal shut down process without the display of the "start up code" during start up or the display of the "shut down code" during shut down.
By the way, holding down the "cmd option R" keys with my left hand while pressing the Mac mini start button with my right hand and quickly getting my right hand in place to hold the "P" key was tricky, but only took two tries to achieve success.
I was concerned that the display of those lines of code was an indicator of an impending problem. It turned out to be an unintended feature following replacement of the logic board.
By the way, Apple Care has been wortwhile for me.

Thanks for the report, that's called a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

  • My mac has been restarting on its own since i installed Yosemite 10.10.1

I installed Yosemite 10.10.1 last month. Since then, My macbook has been restarting on its own. Furthermore overtime I am getting an error message that my JAVA runtime needs to be updated . Although I have Installed JAVA again and again I am constantly getting the error.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Help I have a power mac8.1 and it keeps shutting down at random times with no warning any ideas what to do to solving it?

Help please I have a power mac 8.0 mac osx 10.3.4. The problem is that it keeps shutting down on its own with no warning. this is totaly random with regards to the length of time. all I do know is the bottom right area of the mac feels warmer than the rest of it. does any one have a idea how to solve this.

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • SInce updating my iphone 5S to ios 8, iTunes shuts down during the app sync process. Any ideas how to fix? I now have the newest version of itunes on my laptop and it still shuts down.

Since updating my iphone 5s software to ios 8, iTunes shuts down everytime in the app sync process. I have the most current version of Itunes on my laptop. Any ideas of how to fix?

I feel its more of my sync drivers for itunes/iphone not working if that makes sense. Its not my itunes that stops responding, its more of that if the phone syncs up it fails to anything further.
I've tried sync another iphone to the same itunes and windows autoplayer will allow the photos sorted on the iphone to be saved to the laptop but itunes won't even recongise the device is plugged in.
Although it will charge the battery

  • My rear facing camera has started taking blurry photos, it cant seem to focus. Any ideas?

My rear facing camera has started taking blurry photos, it cant focus on anything and just blurs. I have tried turning it off and back on, ive also done a restore and still doesnt work. If your really close to something it will be ok but anything other than right in front of the camera and it just blurs. Any ideas?

    i have iphone4 32gb.
my auto focus also not working.i was tried everthing but not work.
    -restore firmware/ios = not working
-install super camera = not working
and lastly i've got the problem solved!
    step 1:
open your default camera application and dont close it.
    step 2:
flick the rear camera using your finger at the top side and the back side of the camera lens,
and that same time too try to tap your screen to help your camera to force/help/make auto focus function to work.
and now your camera + auto focus is working!!

  • MacBook has started to shut down randomly.

I've had my MacBook for almost four months now and have loved it so far-- no problems. Then, a few days ago, out of the blue, it started shutting off randomly. I called AppleCare yesterday and they suggested I install an update for the fan, which I did. That seemed to do the trick for about a day, but then a few minutes ago, it did it again. Sometimes when I go to turn it back on, it sounds like it's coming on, then dies again. Other times, it stays on for a few minutes, and then goes back off again. It doesn't feel especially hot when it does this, in fact, it seems somewhat cooler than usual in my opinion. I'm going to try and take it in to my local Apple store tomorrow, but wondered if anyone here might be able to save me a trip or give me more info. Thanks!

Unfortunately, there's many that has this problem. I recommend taking it to the Apple Store for repair. Currently repair time is a bit slow because the parts needed to repair this problem is not always in stock. I would say prepare for the worst (up to 3 weeks).
