My Mac is dying?!? Help - Spinning wheel of death.
HELP My mac has become crazy slow, lots of spinning wheels while trying to access anything and everything. It's gotten progressively worse. I'm a home use but have set up 3 users on this machine. It's been like that since I set it up 3-4 years ago. Now when I do fast user switching it just hangs and never finishes. I have to shut it off. Then in order to get it to boot back up it's usually a process of 2-3 restarts. It'll will just sit on the apple screen and forever. I don't have the original CD so I can't use that to troubleshoot. I'd love to download it if possible. I downloaded AppleJack 1.5 yesterday in hopes to troubleshoot/repair but the first thing it says...
"AppleJack is designed to be run only in single user mode. Running this script while logged in as a user can crash your operating system (especially if you use it to delete the system's virtual memory or cache files), which would be more than a little bit counterproductive, since we're out to solve problems, not cause them."
I don't see a place to turn off the multi-user/accounts. So I'm stuck. And I'm sad. I'm addicted to my mac for fun and extra income. Please help!!

Unfortunately DU can't fix all that much, your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD though.
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
Or, if you can afford to lose all the data on it, 1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the Erase tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then chose MacOS Extended Journalled.
6. Click Erase & look for Options. choose Zero 1 pass.

Please help - spinning wheel of death
My daughter's Mac recently encountered a problem that when attempting to either open iPhoto or play a DVD the computer just shuts down with no waring. Everything else works great. The local Mac store repair gurus (independent store in Boise, not an official Apple store) told her that the logic board was probably bad and she should buy a new computer. For $50 they made a full backup of her computer on an external drive and then had her use migration assistant to basically restore her user on her husband's computer with a new user account for her. OK, now all works fine, EXCEPT her main concern expressed to the Mac store - her iPhoto program. On her new users account on her husband's computer iPhoto attempts to open, gets the spinning wheel, and then must be force-quit (returns a message of non-responsive under force quit). She really wants the photos of her kids. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Mac Book Pro constantly displays spinning wheel of death HELP!!!
My Mac Book Pro (after installing Mavericks) displays the spinning wheel of death multiple times per day. I thought it was my Google Chrome, but now it has been happening no matter what application I am using. I used Etrecheck to see what is going on with my computer, but I don't actually know what the output means. I've copied the information below.
More information: I no longer have a Blackberry, but I don't know how to remove any software that may still be on my computer (since I see Blackberry listed under Kernel Extensions). I also backed up my harddrive on the 28th, just to be safe.
I would greatly appreciate any and all help with this. I'm in the process of trying to study for mulitple teacher certification exams, so this is the worst possible time for tmy computer to suddenly go haywire. Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to help!

yes, it could be due to nearly anything listed in your kernel extensions, startup items, launch daemons, launch agents, or user items above. Please check all of your installed third-party software to make sure that the versions which are installed on your MacBook Pro are compatible with Mavericks; uninstall every software package which isn’t Mavericks-compatible. After you’ve done that, boot into Safe mode, and see if you still get the beach ball of doom there. If it doesn’t appear there, restart normally and see if it appears then. -
Somebody help me My Mac is lagging big and whenever I click on something it just goes to the spinning wheel of death I can't do anything I need help
What model year Mac and what version of OS X are you running.
If this is on an older Mac with standard Rotating HDD it could be a sign the HDD is either to full of data or it is starting to fail. It could also be caused by 3rd party software you've installed. -
Corrupt User Data Spinning Wheel Of Death Mac Palm Desktop Rev D
Hello,
My Treo 700p stopped working and Palm Desktop on My Mac will not open, import, or merge my user data files (current and backups). I've tried the apple-option Merge and import tricks to no avail. If it is set as the default user data, palm desktop will freeze on its splash screen and give me the spinning wheel of death. If i open, i get the message "Opening User Data One moment please..." with an eternal spinning wheel of death (SWOD). If i restore (apple-option merge) i immediately get the SWOD, If i merge, i am notified that the merge is successful, but then i get the spinning wheel of death before any data is displayed. I can open the userdata in textwrangler and see all of the phone numbers, notes, etc, but It seems impossible to parse into any format for reimporting or moving to my Pre. Are there any other tricks to opening the user data or recovering its contents. Any debug tools or software interrupts or anything I can do? Is there a way to open this stuff in a properly parsed format? Can User Data files be opened or imported by any other app? Also the Treo 700p gets power and the red light stays on but it never boots, perhaps there is a forensic tool that can recover the data?
Thank You for all your help and I would greatly appreciate any resolution.
David

Message Edited by infdaze on 06-17-2009 08:29 PMWhat BDAqua said. Get those crummy fonts you added off the drive. At least one of them must be so bad that's it's corrupting RAM every time the system tries to load it.
A Safe Mode boot removes the user cache files of the account you log into in Safe Mode, and clears Font Book's database. Normally, that would allow you to restart normally since Font Book's database is not rebuilt until you launch Font Book. That you can't even get that far means you have some really BAD fonts.
Boot into Safe Mode again. Make a new folder on the desktop and move all of the fonts you added out of the /Library/Fonts/ folded, or the Fonts folder of your user account. Whichever one you put them in.
Now you should be able to startup normally. -
I hope someone can help as this is driving me CRAZY!!!
I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 on my mac and earlier installed some fonts to font book - which appears to have corrupted the font book. I am frozen out of my desktop. I can ONLY log in using safe boot to access my desktop. If I try my usual log in, all I get is the spinning wheel of death!!! Aargghhh!! It's proving a problem as I can't access any of my servers using the safe boot.
Really hope someone can help!!
Thanks,

My Safari is not working right. It often stalls and I get the "colored spinning wheel of Death". I send reports to Apple, but I never get any response or helpful info. What do I do to get Safari working correctly on my MacBook laptop?
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.
Uninstall the McAfee product by following the instructions on whichever of the pages linked below is applicable:
How to install or uninstall McAfee Internet Security for Mac
How to manually remove VirusScan for Mac 8.6.x using a removal script
How to uninstall and reinstall McAfee Agent 4.x on Macintosh computers
Note that if you have already tried to uninstall the software, you may have to reinstall it in order to finish the job. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different.
Back up all data before making any changes. -
Why is it that it would take a very long time [if ever] to change or adjust the tempo of a loop in the audio track when i set it to adjust regions to locators? Until now the spinning wheel of death is still very much spinning. thanks for any help.
Is there another way to adjust tempo of loops the faster way, any other technique? No clue why the final processes have suddenly started to take so long. Two things I'd try: a) capture from an older tape to see if some problem with the new tape is at fault. And b) check the health of your RAM and the hard drive.
The red frame sounds a bit like a glitch we used to have in OnLocation (actually in its predecessor HDV Rack) which was caused by a partial GOP. But that was a product of HDV Rack recording from the live video stream. It turned out that HDV cameras intentionally interrupt the data stream for an instant upon starting to record--specifically to avoid recording a partial GOP to tape. So my gut says that the tape has partial GOPs at the points where you stopped/started recording. -
In Word I constantly get the spinning wheel of death, wait a few seconds and then go again. I have tried force quit several times, restarting the IMac etc. Waited one day, nothing seems to work. What to try next?

Help! 27" iMac bought In 2009 has never gone a day without fighting spinning wheel of death
We bought this at the end of 2009, and ever since has had issues with getting the "beach ball" or spinning wheel of death anytime you click something new, try to open a file, or a program or any link, etc. It soins for about a minute then is good to go, but sometimes lasts longer and happens constantly! How can I fix this?! Its so annoying! I paid good money for this and my 6 year old MacBook Pro with Snow Leapord is blowing this one away! Here's the details:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac10,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: IM101.00CC.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.53f13
Serial Number (system): W8******5PE
Hardware UUID: 0D367BAA-B1E9-537B-BEED-971531A63954
Then recently it did an update, restarted and is now asking for login credentials which we have never had set up...
PLEASE HELP!
Andrew
<Personal Information Edited by Host>So you waited 4 years to report the issue, hard to have much compassion. I'd recommend by reading and using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used and also Spinning beach ball Troubleshooting. Finally when posting to a public forum DO NOT post private information such as serial numbers, addresses, phone numbers etc. I've asked the moderator to remove your SN info.

Help with Logic + Plug-ins-- Spinning Wheel of Death
I'm using Logic 9.1.8 with NI's Machine Mikro and a Focusrite 2i2. All of the most recent drivers are installed and I had been using them both in Logic successfully for days until today. Now every time I open Logic, the spinning wheel of death appears and will not go away, leading me to force quit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried erasing the Loop stuff in the Library folder as it has said on other boards. Please .
Thanks for your help. For whoever stumbles upon these postings and happens to have the exact problem is me. I drug the Maschine.component out of the plug-ins folder and on to the desktop, trashed the original, and started Logic Pro. I then went to preferences and made sure that Logic was opening an empty project at the time of launch. Before, when the spinning wheel of death was coming up, it was automatically going to my last project and, I believe, getting tripped up on mounting Maschine. Now everything works fine.

Can anyone help? When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
NON Creative Cloud CS6 indesign will not open Spinning wheel of death
We have 8 of 16 Mac Yosemite computers all imaged the same way and all other adobe CS6 NON Cloud they work fine. However when we open InDesign only we get the spinning wheel of death and I have to Force close the program. Adobe offers NO chat or Phone support and I have tried the Replace, or "trash" your InDesign preferences both manually and with the Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift command and that doesn't work? I am in desperate need please help! Thank you for reading my post,
Here is a copy of the crash log, not that it makes any sense to me

Macbook Pro 13-inch Late 2011 with constant Spinning Wheel of Death (SWOD)
Hi Guys!
I really have a problem with the Spinning Wheel of Death and slow performance all the time. It suddently started after upgrading to OS X Mavericks.
These are the things i've tried so far:
- Boot up in Safe Mode and Internet Recovery Mode to repair disc permissions and disc = No Errors found at all
- Used SMARTreporter but everything returned as OK
- Installed 16GB of ram installed
- Looked in Activity Monitor, but everything appears to be okay with both RAM, CPU and HD
- Boot with Apple Hardware Test = Everything OK
- Booted up in Internet Recovery and erased the entire HD, clean installed OS X Lion (the OS i bought the Macbook Pro with)
First i thought it was a problem with my HD or my RAM. But everything is returning the OK result. I really hope some of you out there can help me, cause right now its realy hard to use it at the University. It looks like its a software problem, but i can't figure it out.
Made a test in EtreCheck and these are the results from it:

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
