My mac is getting slower

Does anyone know a reliable program to "clean" my mac? I've never had to do this but Lion seems to have slowed down my MacBook... It's just about 3 years old. Thanks!

Thanks! There's 19,9 GB left. I suppose there's no problem there?
I just checked the start up list in my profile... a lot on there! I took unnecessary programs of the list. Let me try to restart and see if it speeds up things. Keep you posted.

Hi, the last install dvd that came out for mac's was Snow Leopard,10.6.3. Lion is a download from apple. You cannot just install it over Yosemite. You would have to backup your drive to save files you want and do a clean install. You might want to look into getting more memory. You can run 8 Gig"s of memory on your Macbook Pro.If your Macbook Pro is getting really slow you might want to download EtreCheck  and then post the results here.http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck  Check out this article.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19031

    Ciao.
An early 2011 MBP would have 10.6 installed, not 10.5.  I assume that is a typographical error or is the MBP model year incorrect?

  • My mac is getting slow, expecially surfing you tube

I have a mac book pro (mid 2009) and since few months it is getting slower and slower surfing internet, youtube and, generally speaking, all the software.
What I can do? Maybe a virus or a malware or stuff like that?
    thanks for the support.

open disk utility and verify disk.
once that's done, verify disk permissions. repair if needed.
once repair is done, restart your macbook and see if that sorts out your issues.
    cheers...

  • My Mac is getting slower and slower, I need to restart it constantly.

I mostly use it just to browser the internet, watch movies and listen to music, but recently I have notice that I have to restart it at least once a day to keep the software working nicely with out any lags. Any tips or suggestions? I don't think I need any hardware update.
    Cheers!

  • Older mac 2009 getting slower with new updates

    Hi
This may be obvious - but does installing 6 years of updates onto my 2009 iMac result in the computer getting slower? Response times for searching in safari get longer etc and generally taking a few minutes to work fully is getting longer as the years go by. It could be old age I suppose.
    Thanks

How much RAM do you have installed? Apple menu>About this Mac>Memory will show this information. 2gb of RAM and the Mac will work, but likely perform like a slug, 4gb is better, but in my experience performance is still not great. 8gb and the Mac should perform well. I recently upgraded an early '09 Mac with 4gb of RAM to 8gb and the difference is like chalk and cheese - no more spinning beachballs or fans working overtime.
Macsales and Crucial are good places to buy RAM, and it's very to do the upgrade yourself on 09 Macs:

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • Mac book pro getting slow. Help me.

I have a macbook pro 13" 2011 model. And what I noticed now is that my mac is getting slow even though I didn't use any apps at all. My free memory is still 60 gig something so I don't think this could be the reason why it's getting slow. Any help? I already deleted other big apps and programs. Even though I don't use any program, the mac is getting slow now... what should I do? do i need those mac keeper thing? thanks for the help!

    How's it going Crampy?
By the % on the CPU Processes.
Whatever is using the most CPU Processes is the one giving the most issue.
If you're using Firefox, Safari or Google, see if it's loading flash on activity monitor.
You will see under %CPU how much of the CPU is actually being used by that application.
The higher the percentage, the slower you get and the hotter your MB Pro gets.

  • Getting Slow after Migration to a new Mac

Every time, I've bought a new Mac and using Migration Assistant to migrate my data to new Mac. The new Mac is getting slower, not look like a hardware upgrade. For example, my Macbook Pro i5 needs more than 10 seconds to start MS Word while my MBA needs less than 2 seconds.
Will there so many scrap or unused data migrated from my old mac? And my "migration data" has been accumulated for several times since 5~6 years ago. I've used this "migration data" for every new Mac arrives. So, This is not the first time I've expereinced, this was happens several times when I bought a new Mac.
Please note that Spotlight Indexing is complete.
    Thanks.
    Regards,

Thanks for your suggestions. I've updated the software already (noticing that it was system, i-movie and garage band which were being updated) but that didn't help. Previously that did help for i-photo though.
Anyway, I tried the sudo thing, I got the following messages but still no i-movie :
updatedyld_sharedcache: warning mismatched install path in /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle/Contents/Resources/MetadataLib.dy lib for /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib
updatedyld_sharedcache: warning mismatched install path in /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle/Contents/MacOS/RawCamera for /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib

updatedyld_sharedcache: warning mismatched install path in /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle/Contents/MacOS/RawCamera for /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib

    Any other ideas?

  • Getting slow after one month

    Hi,
I bought my mac last month and everything was super! Until recently, I just noticed that my mac is getting slow. For example, if I go to 'Finder/Applications my sub-menus don't open as they used to (I have as "View: Show items as icons, in a list, in columns, or with cover flow" . It takes second to do preview to look at folders.
Please advice. What can I do????????? Everything is fine. I am happy with it I just liked the quick/fast privilege that Mac has
    Thank you so much.

here is the answer to that problem, might sound crazy, but it dose work !!
"The way to fix the five second openning on the folders. Jack the double mouse click speed to the highest setting. The higher the double click the faster the folders in the finder open. Sounds crazy, but it work for me. When set to a low setting the folders in the finder take about 3-5 seocnds to open. I sent bug reports to Apple."

  • MBP leopard 10.5.8 is getting slower and the spinning wheel is constant

My 1 year old MBP running OSX has got more sluggish. The little multicolored spinning timer wheel keeps appearing a lot more now, and I hate it! My MBP takes drastically longer to boot when i turn it on as opposed to when I just got it. My web pages take a long time to load. Can anyone help me? WHat can I do to speed up my MBP. I am a novice mac user. this is my first mac. I appreciate the help. Again my mac is getting slower by the day and i dont know how to increase its overall performance. Is there any simple software that can boost overall performance or will I have to reformat my MBP? I have a 200gb HD with 50 gb free and 4 gb of ram. I thought with that ram i would have a super fast MBP but I dont. Please help.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Dave

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Launch the Activity Monitor utility. Pull down the list near the top and set it to "All Processes". Click on the "CPU" column heading to put the highest CPU consumers at the top. Also click on the "CPU" tab in the lower part of the window to check the value for "% Idle". If that value is much above zero, check the other categories for signs of resource problems. If nothing there points to a possible problem, launch the Console utility and look for messages that might suggest a problem. If you see messages that you have trouble interpreting, post them here and someone should be able to help.

  • My Mac Is Gettins Slower And Slower...

    Hi guys,
I think that my mac is getting slower and slower. This is my first mac, I've got MacBook Pro for 4 months with 2.5Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo + 4GB of RAM. For example, after opening Safari I have to wait 15 second until I can change address or anything...maybe 2 months ago it was 2 seconds. I've tried delete cookies and history but nothing has changed. Then I was looking for some disk defragmentation of something similar (I've done this every month on win...) but I didn't find anything.
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
OSX is quite different from Windoze -- most users don't need to defrag, ever.
Use the search box and search for "slow" or "sluggish" -- you'll find lots of similar posts and many suggestions. You'll see many different problems with various solutions.
There are many possibilities -- 3rd party apps, hardware trouble of many types, messed-up permissions, corrupted file system, etc.
A few things to start with:
How full is your disk? You should have at least 10% free, preferably 20% or more.
Have you upgraded OSX since you got your Mac? Did the trouble start after that?
Have you installed or removed any 3rd-party apps?
Have you installed or removed any peripherals?
Have you used Activity Monitor to see if a particular application or function is hogging your cpu?
