My Mac is killing me : (

Hello,
I've been having a problem with my FTP upload speeds as they've been gradually dropping on my Mac Pro. I used to get 400 to 500+kb on my uploads, which was great, but now the speeds have dropped down to a steady 50kb, which doesn't work at all. When I start an upload, it usually starts high (500kb or so) and quickly drops down to 50-60kb and stays there. Everything else in my internet connection works great—fast web-surfing, fast downloads, stable connection, etc. (it's a 6Mbps+ connection)
I had a tech-guy come out from my ISP, and he hooked up his PC directly to the microwave dish I'm using to connect to the ISP (bypassing my Airport router), and he was getting high speeds (500-700kb) when he uploaded a file to my FTP—the kind of speeds I used to get. This morning I hooked up the family iMac directly, and was getting the same high speeds as the PC when I uploaded. Then I hooked up my Mac Pro directly and was getting 20-50kb, which makes it pretty obvious that it's my Mac Pro that's the problem.
So, my question, is there some setting that I'm missing that is causing my system to slow to a crawl when I upload a file to my FTP? I'm using Leopard on a new 3.2GHz dual quad-core Mac Pro, and the iMac is running Panther. Is there some issue with Leopard that causes this slow down that can be changed with a hidden setting? I depend on fast uploads of large files for my business, and this slowness is just killing me. This is driving me crazy because I know the speed is there, but there's something blocking me from getting to it.
Please help. Thank you.
hdesign

Update to my question: I just installed the osx update (10.5.4) and that seems to have fixed it, yahoo!
Thanks,
hdesign

  • The Undo/Redo features on Mac are killing me.

The Undo and Redo features on Mac are killing me when I'm editing codes online via ANY browsers. Undo/Redo does not replicate exactly the history state of documents whenever I try to go back thee or six steps behind.
Let's say my codes were working fine. Then I messed and I want to go 3 or 4 steps behind (when everything was working fine). Doing this using a keyboard by pressing the undo keyword combo 3 or 4 times may potentioallly aggravate the issue in that codes are not being put on the exact previous position NOR context. Redo is even worse. As a result Undo/Redo almost always break the code even further.
Undoing 1 time is exact (it always works), twice is risky (but works 80% of the time), and anything above that is potentially highly messy and innaccurate.

I figured out how this works... Whenever I'm using an online editor (let's say an HTML editor), the undo/redo shortcuts are not ⌘+z for undo and ⌘+⇧ +z (or ⌘+y) for redo, instead, use control+z for undo and control+⇧+z for redo. Well, bear in mind you can also redo using control+y

  • Mac OS 10.5.4 broke printing from iMac, and MacBook Pro to Brother ML-1740

I have had my five Macs (iMacs, Mac Book Pros, Mac Books) all printing via an Air Port Express to a Brother ML-1740 Laser Printer. As each one downloaded and was upgraded to 10.5.4 they lost the ability to print to this printer. They can still see it, but print jobs just hang in the queue with "Connecting"... I have restarted all networking equipment. The remaining 10.5.3 unit can still print to the printer. Where do I even start in troubleshooting this? How can a mere dot upgrade to Mac OS kill printing for this printing? Do they not test backwards compatibility at all!?!?!?!?

Have you tried changing the Leopard firewall settings?
(System Prefs > Security > Firewall)
    from <Allow only essential services>
    to <Allow all incoming connections>?
I have an HP Officejet Pro AIO network printer (not wireless) and printing broke with 10.5.4. Turning off the Leopard firewall (as above) allowed me to print. Not a great solution maybe, but a very useful troubleshooting step. Try it!

  • Sound cutting out on Mac Pro (late 2013)

Bit of a long one and I'm not sure if this is the right place so sorry in advance.
For the past 2/3 weeks the sound on my new Mac Pro has been cutting out completely. It doesn't matter if headphones, external speakers or nothing is plugged into the back the sound just cuts out. It only comes back if I reboot the mac or kill 'audiocored' (as suggested by some people over on the Apple Support Forums.
The sound would cut out when I'm using CC products and when I'm not. It would range from 3 hours of not cutting out to every 15 seconds. If it occurred when I watching a sequence or clip in Premiere it would make the playback slow to a crawl and if I was watching a video on YouTube and it would occur the video would then stop and no longer load. The cut outs are to my knowledge completely random and I'm not doing anything that I haven't done a million times before when it occurs.
I've been contacting Apple for a while now and gone through a number of different troubleshoots (booting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM, logging in as another user) and the issue occurs on everything. The only fix I did find was if I created a new partition on the hard drive and boot into that then the sound issues don't occur.
Which leads me to why I'm posting this... That partition didn't have any Adobe software. I then uninstalled all Adobe CC programs on the main partition and the sound issues then stopped completely. Only when it's all installed (even when they're not even open) do the sound problems occur, which leads me to believe the sound cuts are due to Adobe CC software.
All Adobe and Apple software is up to date. I've trashed the preferences on all my Adobe software as well as clearing the cache.
I realise this is a bit of a weird one and maybe in the wrong support forum but I'm getting to my wits end. I've got huge projects dropping very soon (with tight deadlines) that I need to work on and can't be rebooting the mac every 5 mins.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this I would be greatly appreciated.
I'm currently toying with the idea of doing a factory reset of the computer but I worry as I know that will take some time re-downloading / installing all my software and documents.

I have had a bit more luck it would seem.
Turns out it wasn't and Adobe software that was causing the problem rather some faulty RAM. I took all the RAM out and then put it back in again a few seconds later (doing exactly what Apple support told me to do) and voila the sound issues were gone. Although one of the cards decided not to work any more and I was left with 12gb rather than 16gb. Have since replaced all the default RAM with a more powerful third set from a party provider and haven't had any trouble since.
It's very strange that this problem is persisting for you even after the RAM being replaced. All I can suggest is that you keep calling Apple as their support services seem to be pretty good (for me at least).
Sorry if this is no help at all.

  • My Macintosh kills my WRT54G

Windows XP and Windows Vista work fine, but when I connect with a Macbook it works for a while and then the router freezes.  Turning the router off and on fixes it for another half hour or so, and then it happens again.
I have googled and tried various suggestions: disable SES in the router; disable IPv6 on the Mac; force the router to use wireless g; assign the Mac a fixed IP address.  So far nothing has worked.
We also talked to our local Apple reseller.  They suggested downgrading the card in the Mac from n to g and wanted $200 to do that for us.  Surely there's an easier and less costly fix!
Can anyone help?  The Mac is running OS X 10.4.

Thank you for the help.  I have not tried your suggestions because after I posted my first message I noticed that the frequency with which the Mac was killing the router had greatly decreased, I believe because of switching to a manual IP address.  I think what had been killing the router was the periodic negotiation of a new IP lease.
In the meantime I have updated to the latest version of OSX 10.4, including several updates to the wireless system, and together that seems to have fixed the problem.

  • IMac Killing network port

    This involves a iMac G3 500 mhz, running 10.3.9.
First I have to say I am know next to nothing about networking, I'll try to explain what is going on and am looking for whatever info any one can offer me as to why this problem may be happening.
Problem: Every morning the iMac when started up cannot find the network in our office. The port is completely dead, under system prefs, under network status it is completely blank not even a red circle saying built in ethernet is there but no connection.
I think it's the line (we recently moved to a new office) and someone else thinks it's the mac killing the port. When I connect another machine (also iMac) onto that port it also can't find the port and does the same thing. I've been told that's because the first mac has already killed the port and hooking anything else up will not work either.
I moved the problem machine to a different network port this a.m. and it works. The someone else is freaked out that tomorrow when the mac starts up that it will now kill this port too. He says it's already killed 9 ports on the switch/hub (correct term?) and he can't get them back active.
In our old office this never was a problem. I've been told that's because the old switch/hub was a non secure switch so it let the mac do whatever it wanted and that it gave itself a static ip address. Now we have a secure switch and it's not letting the mac do what it wants and is not regonizing this ip address. I've also been told that the machine probably has adware/spyware and that is why it's killing the network port it's connected to.
I guess I'm wondering - is it possible for a mac to kill a network port? Is it possible that adware/spyware is making the mac kill the port? If it is killing ports then why didn't it when it was moved to the new port this a.m.?
We have 8 mac in the office and none of them have this same problem. I can't imagine that out of 9 macs only 1 would have adware/spyware.
    Thanks for any help

So before, you were using a hub with no routing capabilities, and "port-killer" was getting a self-assigned "169.x.x.x" IP address? Is this how the other Macs were doing it?
How is your System Preferences Networking stuff configured? DHCP? Or static with defined network mask and DNS servers? Built-in Ethernet, right? Is this the same as all the other Macs on your network?
It could be a hardware problem with either the Mac or the new router or its cabling. Here is how I would proceed to troubleshoot:
The first thing I'd do is reboot your router with a known good Mac plugged in to the dead port, and "port-killer" plugged into a known good port then boot up both Macs and see how they behave. If "port-killer" is truly living up to his legacy, you guys need to get a new router anyways, so what's another dead port?
If you now have two apparently dead ports then replace "port-killer" with a third known good computer. If both ports on the router are still dead now, then "port killer" is living up to his name and both it and the router need to be fixed. By the way, I would also do cold-boots with computers and router every time I made a configuration change in this procedure.
If "port-killer" is the only dead computer on the network and the other one works in the previously suspect port, then the router is okay and only "port-killer" needs to be fixed.
If "port killer" is working okay on his new jack, and the original "problem child" port on the router is still dead, it could be the router or it could be the cabling between router and computer. To determine which, unplug the cables on the "dead" port and a known good port at the router. Cross them and plug them back in. The good line now goes to the (previously) dead jack at the "bad" computer location and the (possibly) bad line goes to the previously good computer location.
Who's broke now? Same computer? Then it's in the cabling. Different computer? That router port is flakey.
The fact that you have already connected another Mac onto the "problem child" line and it's DOA, and that "port-killer" works okay plugged in elsewhere tells me that it's a router port or cable issue. Most likely the stupid cable is not plugged in at the router at all, and/or is mislabeled and running off to a different unused jack in your new office location.

  • Update 1.1.2 killed my phone

I plugged my phone into its cradle, iTunes told me about 1.1.2, and I clicked the "Update" button.
Half an hour later I notice that iTunes still claimed it was "preparing iPhone for update".
The iphone's stuck in an endless reboot loop; plugging it into the cradle locks up iTunes to the point where I must reboot the Mac to kill it. The local (Reno) Apple store is closed for renovations.
I think I'm screwed, but if anyone has any suggestions...

most people believe that they will lose all their data with a restore and thats not the case. You get a backup.
Well ... you get all your data back IF you run a Sync before doing the Restore.
I get it that you get it and understand the process. There are some people on this forum who are not quite so technically savvy and perhaps a bit less experienced.
For those folks - who come here for assistance - it is important to be very clear on steps and processes. Restore erases everything on the phone, puts in a new version of the firmware, then replaces data from the most recent back up (sync).
You are correct. Restore does not destroy your data *IF you have a current back up* of all the data on the phone. But if the user does not have a current back up (sync) then it is possible to lose some data.
For the sake of the less experienced folks who visit this forum, we all need to try to be as clear as possible and we need to repeat basic instructions like "Back Up Everything" and "Do a current Sync before doing an Update or a Restore".
That way the inexperienced folks who depend on old pros like you will not make mistakes that haunt them and you will not be blamed for lost data.

  • Unable to backup from one external USB drive to another

Hi all, this one's been doing my head in for a few days and now I'm waving the white flag of surrender and deciding to ask on here.
I'm trying to backup some of my video files off one of my external HDDs onto another external HDD (or DVD - more on that in a minute) but I don't appear to be able to do so. The files I'm attempting to back up are either my own DVD rips or iTunes Movie purchases, since we don't yet have Movies in the Cloud in the UK. At various points during the copy procedure I get the following messages:
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in <<various names>>.m4v can't be read or written. (Error code -36)
then, after clicking OK, I get:
The operation can't be completed because one or more required items can't be found (Error code -43)
If I use Finder to navigate to the offending named file, there it is in its original place on external disk 1 all nice and happy. In iTunes the file is in the playlist and is perfectly playable. I have turned off "enable disks to sleep where possible" in Preferences to see if one or the other may be going to sleep during the operation. If I use Disk Utility to verify the two HDDs in question both come up as OK. User Permissions are of course off for the external drives and I have tried reformatting the 2nd drive jsut in case. Obviously I can't reformat drive 1 since it contains the data I'm trying to back up and since I can't back it up......you get the idea.
If I try to use a DVD to backup the media files I'm getting the same errors, along with (in the case of an external DVD drive) something about comunnication between the computer and the drive has failed. Now I'm fairly sure I should be able to backup my data for archiving purposes so does anyone have any idea what could be casuing this problem?
I'm currently trying again, using yet another external drive and to copy just over 18.5GB it's giving me an estimated completion time of 15 hours and has seemingly frozen on 50.3MB copied! Now I know USB 2.0 is slow by today's standards but still I feel this is a little excessive. It's now down to 3 hours estimated but keeps pausing and climbing to 15+ then back down again. I'm guessing it's either a read error from disk 1 or a write error to disk 2 but since Verify Disk is showing both are OK I'm not sure how to tell which. And now I just got the error messages quoted at the top of the page again.
    OK, ideas anyone.....

You can copy the entire  to a file.  Use the dmg extension.  Double click on file to mount.
Perhaps you should run disk utility on the drive. Maybe the filesystem is mess up.
    Do a  bit-by-bit copy
You can use the following command to display all partitions:
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    # This is a little deep.
#It is  best to do the pdisk command before you eject the external hard drive. Now, eject the external hard drive.  Do another pdisk command to see what drive name has disappeared.  The disappearing name is the name of your external hard drive.
    sudo pdisk -l
    #for details...
    man pdisk
    # Do a  bit-by-bit copy.
#eject the partition in the normal GUI
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    dd if=/dev/disk0s10 bs=4096 | gzip | dd of=~/disk0-s10 bs=4096
#this can take awhile. Open another window and do ls -l ~/disk0-s10
    # Here is  how to restore the partition.
    dd if=~/disk0-s10 bs=4096 | gunzip | dd of=/dev/disk0s10 bs=4096
Don't zero out your unused records, since you are having problems with your disk.
Here is another way to run the command. When you run the command in the background you can question how for the process has gotten.  Adjust or eliminate count as needed.
    mac $ dd if=/dev/zero  bs=1024 count=1kx1k of=/Volumes/MacOSFirewire/zero&
    [1] 510
    mac $ man kill
    mac $ kill -s siginfo 510
    953197+0 records in
    953196+0 records out
    976072704 bytes transferred in 82.524495 secs (11827673 bytes/sec)
    mac $ 1048576+0 records in
    1048576+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes transferred in 89.700333 secs (11970322 bytes/sec)
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive.  I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system  on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. )  Once created, you can run your system from the external drive.  Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine.  This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.

  • Message asking to stop CC during reinstall (was:Question about installing Adobe Creative Cloud)

In October of 2013, I tried the 30 day trial Adobe Creative Cloud and downloaded Premiere Pro CC, Adobe Prelude CC, Adobe Photoshop, adobe Media Encoder CC, Adobe Audition CC and Adobe After Effects CC.  After a day or so, I decided to purchase the Student Teacher Edition.  When I did that, I deleted the Adobe Crative Cloud and installed the Adobe Creative Cloud for that wasn't the trail.
Every thing worked for a moment. I was able to add other things or had the option to add, because I could go to the Adobe Creative Cloud.  Then when I was exiting from the Premier Pro CC tuturial, I somehow deleted the Adobe Creative Cloud icon.  Whenever I tgry to download the updates and even re-install th ACC, la warning comes up to stop the Adobe Creative Cloud that is running, so, I can download the updates.
However, I am not able to do so.  How can I re-install the Adobe Creative Cloud and by pass the warningf?
    Thank you

    Hi Reginald,
Please quit Adobe creative cloud desktop app. Open the task manager in Windows or terminal in MAC. Kill below Adobe services and try installing the CC apps again.
    Adobe AAM updater notifier
    Adobe creative cloud.
    Adobe CEF helper service.
Once you end these processes, relaunch the creative cloud app and then try to install the updates.

I tried to play something someone sent me, it required realaudio, I downloaded for free Real player for mac, it didn't do the job, so I tried to trash it, but I keep getting the message above. Anyone knows what to do?

    Hey there,
Try logging out and in and then re-attempt to trash it or simply restart your Mac to kill any processes that are still using it. And again, re-attempt to trash the application. See if that helps.
You may want to find a third party utility to "uninstall" the application and trash any files on your Mac that are associated with it. I would recommend [AppTrap|http://konstochvanligasaker.se/apptrap> or [AppZapper|http://www.appzapper.com> to help you accomplish this task.

  • Searching for scripts with Spotlight

I decided to ask this question on this forum because AppleScripters are the most likely to search for scripts with Spotlight.
*First, here’s what seems to be the normal behavior of Spotlight:*
If I open the folder “/Users/pierre/Documents/Loisirs/Informatique/Utilisation avancée/AppleScript”, type ⌘F and enter “Kind is Other” and “script” as the search criterion, I get 89 items in the +Searching “AppleScript”+ window.
On the other hand, if I replace the previous criterion with “File extension is scpt”, I get 88 items in the +Searching “AppleScript”+ window, which is normal since one of my scripts is a script bundle, whose extension is “scptd”.
Next, if I open my home folder, type ⌘F again and enter “Kind is Other” and “script” as the search criterion, I get 110 items in the +Searching “pierre”+ window, which again is normal since many of my scripts are outside of my “AppleScript” folder.
*Now, here’s what looks like a bug:*
If I replace the previous criterion with “File extension is scpt” in my home folder, I get only 3 items (instead of 109) in the +Searching “pierre”+ window, which obviously is nonsense.
I have rebuilt permissions and reindexed Spotlight, without any difference.
    Any explanation?

    Hi Pierre
Not a explanation, but a possible solution, try some of these ideas:::
    1) Restart Mac
    2) Rebuild the spot light index manually (I no you said you have done this, this is just a path to follow):
    a) launch terminal
    b) type this sudo mdutil -E /
    c) type in your admin password when prompted
    d) rebuilding index should commence (could take a while)
    3) clear the spot light caches and prefs:
    a) download "Yasu" from here and install
    http://jimmitchelldesign.com/yasu/
    b) enable "Reset System Prefs", "Clear System font Cache", "Clear local font cache", "Clear user font cache"
    click ok
    c) Restart Mac
    4) Kill the SystemUIServer:
    a) launch activity monitor, find process "SystemUIServer" highlight then click button quit process
    hope this helps

  • Windows iTunes never finishes updating iPhone without bricking it...

So, I work at a mostly PC (Read: We only have two Macs - This kills me) job. The head of the company recently purchased an 8GB iPhone (2nd Gen), when the 3GS came out. Every time a new iPhone software revision comes out and he chooses 'update,' it grinds and whirrs until it gets to a point where on the screen it shows a progress bar and says 'installing software.' The iPhone shows a progress bar with the Apple Logo. They then sit there for, literally hours, as if displaying a screen shot.
The only solution, since I can't restore the iPhone on the PC (laptop running XP, btw) is to take it into the Mac room, have the latest iTunes install itself, restore the iPhone, THEN have it download the new iPhone software, RESTORE again and before it syncs, disconnect it and take it to the Boss' Laptop and have it restore from his backup. This works. But, it's an extremely shoddy way for someone to have to simply update their soft/hardware. This is also my first experience with syncing an iPhone via windows as I use nothing but Macs. The Manichean juxtaposition between the two processes is jarring.
Today, my IT (the only IT guy) guy tried to update HIS 16GB 3GS and EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM happened. And, he's currently reinstalling on the Mac so he can restore from backup on HIS laptop (XP). He says there's no ubiquitous software (other than Norton) on the machines and they both have admin rights... so, please help so we don't have to dance like this every time Apple releases a new update AND so we can maybe we can get new Macs in here (my logic is that if the iPhone keeps screwing up, they will then get a 'reverse-halo' effect - that would be terrible).

Upgrading the software has nothing to do with whether it's locked or not. Contact the cellular provider. They are the only ones who can help you with a locked phone issue.
