My mac is lying to me
I keep getting arbitrary messages like:
+You are not connected to the Internet. Safari can’t open the page “https://www.amazon.com” because your computer isn’t connected to the Internet+
But it IS connected, because I'll have another window or tab open at the time and be surfing just fine. I'll refresh the errant page, but no luck it directs me to the Network Diagnostic and I click through it's screens and sometimes it fixes things, other times not. I've noticed it mostly on Amazon.com pages and Apple.com pages and it's completely inconsistent. And I know it's my Mac and not my service provider because my PC on the same router is having none of these issues.
Any suggestions would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Dan P.
Try putting in the numbers Sig suggested, it's what the OS uses to lookup apple.com and find it's real address like 17.254.3.183
You can always just put the old ones back if you write them down first.

Basically, yes.
You can migrate your MobileMe account to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard - when asked to confirm that you have Lion on your Mac, just lie and say 'yes'.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it. You may find the MobileMe email settings will continue to work for a time after migrating but it will stop eventually so you should not rely on this. You should delete your MobileMe email account from Mail.
You can then set up Mail manually in Snow Leopard to access iCloud email; it's a slight fudge because the 'wizard' will attempt to connect you to MobileMe as soon as you enter an @me.com address. The process, which includes a workaround for this, is described here:

Can I Access my iCloud mails from 10.6
Hi Haven't upgraded my mail mobileme account to icloud because I need access to the mails while working in 10.6. I do spent a fair amount of my sparetime editing in Final Cut Pro Studio on my Mac Pro. And I have been unable to get it to work proberly in 10.7.x. I thus do need access to 10.6.x. I tried installing Final Cut on a newly formatted and installed 10.7.x disc, but the program crashes on startup. It does not do that when working in 10.6.x
If I upgrade to iCloude. Will I then be able to access my mails while working in 10.6.x ?
Best regards

Est. external monitor resolution
I am trying to set up a samsung syncmaster 191Tplus as an external monitor on my macbook from early 2008 running 10.6.8. When I plug it in, both screens flash (not just a flicker) as shown in this youtube video posted by someone else, but my problem is the same
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-Yz-Em2GU4.
I am using the mini-DVI to VGA adaptor. The resolution of the samsung is 1280x1024, which is not listed in my choice of display resolutions. Is this the cause? What can I do? I can't access settings to change anything after the monitor is connected, and I can't find settings for the external monitor before it is connected. Would using SwitchResX work to create a monitor resolution preset before plugging in the second monitor?OK, here is something to try. Go into System Preferences and select Displays. In the window that opens will be a checkbox for "Show displays in menu bar." Put a checkmark there and make it active. There should now be a little icon of an Apple display on the right side of the menu bar at the top of the screen. If you click on it, it will drop down and give you a short cut to different resolutions. There should be a checkmark next to the currently active resolution. Is it set to 1440 x 900? If not, set it there.
If you are still getting that message from the monitor, well, I don't think the Mac is lying about sending 1440 x 900. If the screen doesn't look right to you, try using the Auto Adjustment feature on your Viewsonic monitor. It could just be that the image needs adjusting. -
Macbook Chirps and clicks when using external monitor
My mid 2010 Macbook Pro makes chirping and clicking noises from the hard drive however it only happens when I have my external monitor hooked up. Any one have any idea why? It is different from the Motion sensor click. I've found all over the net that others are experiancing this issue (not connected to external monitor) however haven't I haven't seen a conclusion. Any ideas?
Thanks
Here is a video I just recorded of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZAc9o3Z4DcHello everyone!
I found this topic which took my attention as I've been having the same issue for some time..
Please excuse my bad english, I'm italian... but I'll try to point everything up the best I can.
Every time I hooked up my macbook pro 13" mid 2010 to the external monitor/TV. I started to hear my hard disk chirping and clicking...
That was worrying me a lot, thinking my hard disk was going to abandon me soon....
But I finally came to a solution!!
Well.. not really a solution, but certainly a workaround.
In my case my Mac is lying on the side of a 46" Led TV which I use also as a monitor for it, hooked up via HDMI cable and HDMI-MiniDV out Hama adapter. I was using a wifi connection.
Then I thought "could it be the wifi antenna disturbing the hard disk when the mac is closed?"
I connected my mac via LAN cable to the router, turned off the wifi, and... my Mac is now quiet as a frozen lake (and a lot faster too)!! ;D
Please let me know if that works for you too.
Cheers! -
HT4929 I just don't understand these two options!!
I have 1 iPod touch 2g not iOS5 compatible but several iPhone 4's, iPod touch 3g's and iPads. Should I choose the second option to move to iCloud, where it states not all my devices are compatible? Then what happens if I make them compatible later?? Are my currently compatible devices then somehow crippled in iCloud with this choice?
Apple, why does this have to be so hard a decision...MobileMe was fine!!!You can migrate your MobileMe account to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard - when asked to confirm that you have Lion on your Mac, just lie and say 'yes'.

I would have expected that you would be able to sync older devices using iTunes, but note that if you do this, all devices have to be synced using iTunes as the calendars and contacts have to reside under 'On My Mac' - you cannot sync calendars you are syncing to iCloud using iTunes, so it's one or the other.
There is no Keychain syncing.
As you will be aware, the iDisk will be removed and its contents deleted. This page examines some third-party alternatives:
http://rfwilmut.net/migrate3
The Backup application will sync to local disks or DVD but AFAIK will not sync to any online service other than MobileMe. -
Is there anyway to get iCloud without upgrading to Lion?
I really don't want to upgrade my OS but I just got an iPhone and would like to sync without using iTunes.
Doing my best to isolate an actual question from your post, in which you don't state you operating system:
You can migrate your MobileMe account to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard - when asked to confirm that you have Lion on your Mac, just lie and say 'yes'. I'm not sure whether you can access the site to do this with Leopard or Tiger.

and here for Tiger:

Both @mac.com and @me.com addresses will be maintained, as will aliases. iCloud allows only three aliases - if you have five they will be maintained but to add a new one you would need to delete three, not one.
On Snow Leopard only you may be able to sync your calendars to iCloud by means of an unsupported hack, but you cannot sync Contacts or Bookmarks, and iCloud's other facilities will not work. Just simple email using 10.6.8, nothing else
I just want to keep my .mac email account running smoothly, I simply have no use whatsoever for anything iCloud offers
Reading the iCloud transition blurb I need to manually configure Mail as 10.6.8 isn't supported (nice one Apple)
Is this all I need to do?
I don't want to change to Lion, been there, done that, no thanks
Currently I'm unable to add an additional email account as the details are already used by MobileMe
I'm worried about removing my MobileMe account in order to set up Mail via iCloud in case I'm unable to retreive the deleted messages, lots of people seem to be struggling
Maybe I should wait until the end of May & see how things work out in the meantime?......moto-moto wrote:

MobileMe, iCloud and Macbook Core Duo
My gf has a macbook intel core duo, so we can't go higher than OS X.6 but OS X.7 is required for free iCloud. I have an iPhone 3G which can go no further than iOS 4 and she has an iPhone 3GS which is on iOS5.
We have MobileMe which is soon to become defunct and are interested in iCloud and want our data to be synced between our mac and iPhones, but as far as I can see Apple offer no solution other than buying another new iPhone and Mac.
Is this right or am I missing something? I find it incredible that Windows users on Vista (no hardware limitation specified but assume old PCs can't run Vista) can get iCloud but Apple supporters can't due to the software limitation. My gf had no choice as she was starting a course and needed a computer to do her course work on and the Core 2 Duo was still not out at the time. We went Mac as we always had in the past.
So other than spending a fortune on a new Mac and phone is our only solution Google Mail?

I don't know about a phone with iOS4: I would assume you could set up the Mail app manually with the same settings as in the link above, but calendar syncing may not be possible - you would have to ask in the iPhone forum. -

OSX 10.6 and a missing font
I would be very grateful for a pointer here...
I updated my home iMac to OSX10.6, then up to 10.6.2
I left the machine and the upgrade seems fine. However, my daughter's Club Penguin game on the web won't show some of the type and I think a font has gone missing/ been messed up. All other writing appears ok but not the name/ password or some of the web textboxes
How do I find the missing font and re-install it? i am wary of messing with the fonts.
(I have a time machine backup ok)

10.4.10 boosts CPU speed by 130mhz !?!
Hi,
After installing the Mac OS 10.4.10 update my iBook 1.2ghz now thinks it is... 1.33ghz!
Am I the only one?
In the many years of being a Mac user I have never had this happen before, and it 'appears' that know one else has reported it happening either.
Not that I am complaining!
But really, I have checked and double checked, and the fact remains that 'About This Mac' and System Profiler shows my CPU speed as 1.33ghz now - has the update over-clocked my machine?
When I get a moment I will run a benchmark to see if that is the case, or whether the update is (more likely) just reporting the wrong speed...
Let me know if you have experienced this
