My mac is not sleeping!

Hey, I'm having a problem with my mac. It won't sleep automatically (by energy saver settings). I've deleted the iStat Dashboard Menu, quit LogMeIn, closed all apps.
Any ideas?

Here's my sleep tip......
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.

"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards. Also, here is Apple doc.#305262 about PCI cards and sleep.

After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
Check the printer queue!"

Mac will not sleep unless external monitor unplugged

Updated Mid 2011, 27" iMac to Yosemite. Computer would not sleep. Checked network settings, sleep settings, unplugged external drives. Finally slept when I unplugged an external monitor. I'm using an old cinema display with an adapter into the Thunderbolt port. Plugged it back in, Mac wouldn't sleep.
Is there a fix for this?

Apparently there is a task running that wants periodic disk access. Have you tried simply looking at Activity Monitor to see if there's a task running that might have been forgotten?
Try creating a temporary, "test" user account. Log out of yours and into the test account. Does that fix anything?
There are lots of things that could cause your Cube's insomnia. I know you've already looked for everything you can think of, but here are a couple of links that may help:

(Don't pay attention to the fact it's in the Snow Leopard forum, the causes are all the same. Also, I don't recommend arbitrarily clearing cache files as one user suggested - I can't imagine that's your problem anyway.)

Since installing snow leopard10.6, MAC will not sleep? Any ideas?

Try reinstalling it:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If this does not help, then try creating a new user account using Accounts preferences. Log out of your account and log into the new account. Does the computer now sleep properly?

My Mac will not sleep

I've just about had enough now, to the point where I'm considering simply reinstalling the OS and starting from scratch but I thought I'd ask here first before doing so.
Firstly, my Mac won't simply go to sleep even though I have it set up in the Energy Saver to go to sleep after 10 mins (display sleep is 2 mins and this works ok).
When I then put the Mac to sleep manually it will sleep for a while and then randomly come back to life.
I've checked the console and the only thing that appears on wakeup is this:

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've zapped the PRAM and Repaired Disk Permissions but still the same problem exists.

Mac does not sleep under second internal HD

I got a problem with the Mac not going to sleep while running from the second internal HD under Mac OS 10.4.10. It remains awaken after a period of inactivity.
I have two HDs, one is primary and the other is second (only just installed last spring). The primary HD can go to sleep after a period of inactivity but if I click on "Sleep" from the menu's dropdown, it wouldn't go to sleep.
Anyone who have two or more HDs with Mac OS installed have this problem of Mac not going to sleep after either a period of inactivity or by clicking on "Sleep" from the menu?

Our Digital Audio G4 won't sleep after I installed a Western Digital 80GB drive. Neither the drive nor the display will go to sleep (although the clock freezes which may indicate that the CPU sleeps.)
If I boot from the original Maxtor 30GB, it sleeps normally but it makes no difference if the WD drive is Master or slave or if the Maxtor is removed - the computer will not sleep if it boots from the WD. Upgrading Tiger 10.9->10.4.10->10.4.11 did not help.
Since this G4 is 'improved' - 1GHz CPU, 128Mb video card, I'll probably replace the original video card and see if that does anything. Apple's Sleep documents warn that non-Apple installed drives may or may not sleep. But, since the vendor (OWC) does not report that other purchasers of the WD80 drive have sleep problems, I have to assume that it's unique to our configuration.

Mac pro not sleeping since mountain lion upgrade from Lion

Hi, just wondering if anybody was having problems with their mac not sleeping after upgrading to Mountain Lion. The screen no longer blanks either, screensaver just runs until I move the mouse etc. all was fine under Lion, tried various things, stopping program's etc to no avail. I can force sleep manually just not happening when set to in energy saver settings. Machine is a mid 2010 mac pro, would of thought it shouldn't of have any issues running ML! Odd how the screen power down isn't working either. I'm out of ideas, must be a bug of some sort.

Problem turned out to be a sidewinder USB joystick. Once unplug sleep resumed as scheduled.

Mac does not sleep after setting Energy Saver settings

Hi, got a slight problem after installing Leopard. The thing is that my Mac seems to ignore the settings specified in Energy Saver Preference Pane, the screen is put to sleep as it should, that's working fine, but the computer does not go to sleep when designated. I can put it to sleep manually (or by using Schedule) but setting an inactivity time doesn't work.
No visible console messages or similar, no external HDDs or other external devices, no bluetooth, no file sharing, no bad apparent application/process running, no spotlight indexing, as you see I have tried a few things to fix the problem...
Any ideas of how to fix this problem would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, seems like I fixed the problem, the numerous things I tried must have solved it, probably the SMC or PRAM/NVRAM fixed it, though I'm not sure, but anyway it's working now, so I'm good.
And to asphotos: No I don't have any printer at all, and I don't use airport, not sure what caused the problem really, just appeared after Snow Leopard install... Thanks for the tip though.

Mac will not sleep.....

I've set the preferences to sleep when possible. Even at using the sleep command it will not stay asleep. It will go into sleep mode for 1 second and then come back on.
Can I delete some kind of pref or plist and start over?

Several things can interfere with sleep:
1) Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."
2) Some USB devices like printers can prevent sleep. As a test, disconnect devices temporarily.
3) Some add-on USB 2.0 PCI cards can interfere with proper sleep behavior. If you added USB ports via a PCI card, try removing it temporarily
Create a new user account and see if the problem recurs from that account. Taht can narrow down teh search for problem files.

External Hard Drive not sleeping or waking

Hi I have a mac mini with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2. I recently purchased a iomega 2 TB external hard drive that came pre loaded with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) pre formatted on it. I use 800 FireWire for the connection. I had no problems with the drive mounting and transferring files until I put my computer to sleep. I took me some time to figure out that the sleep function was the cause of the problem I was having. The drive would still be listed in finder after my computer woke but when accessed finder would freeze up and I would get the spinning cursor. Also when I left it to sleep over night I would find the drive off and an error that it had been ejected wrong.
I watched the drive when I put my computer to sleep get the sleep command and flash for a second and start to sleep but then come on again as if there was an error in the sleep command from my mac. If I wake my computer again to see the action of the drive it then goes to sleep when my computer is waking. I am guessing the command is the same to the drive from my mac. Wake or sleep, it just depends on the drives current state as to whether it sleeps or wakes.
My fix so far is to not let my computer sleep at all. As well I have to choose in system preferences to not allow the drives to sleep. Did notice after some time the external hard drive will sleep anyway from idle time but now my mac is not sleeping obviously. Or I have to eject the disk manually and then turn off the external hard drive then put my computer to sleep.
Am I missing something here? It's either a hard drive error or a software bug in Lion.

Delay time putting Mac Mini to sleep manually

I am using an early 2011 Mac Mini running OS 10.6.7, which I have had for a little over a year. A new problem cropped up in the past week. When I put it to sleep manually it takes 2 minutes or more before it actually goes to sleep. I have "wake for network access turned off." The computer goes to sleep automatically at the time set in energy saver without a problem. The manual sleep delay happens whether or not I have applications running or not. What goes?

Sounds like your iMac might have an unfinished task running in the background.
Not sure if > Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode helps or not, but it is worth a once over to see if anything pops.
Another place to check is "Applications / Utilities / Console / All Messages"

Powerbook not sleeping

I know this is a perennial favourite but I thought I'd see if there were any easy solutions out there ...!
My powerbook has recently stopped going to sleep unless I manually put it to sleep via the Apple menu or power button.
I've scanned the discussions and it seems that this has been a common problem in 10.3.9?
I've tried the usual things like disconecting all periperal devices (I recently got an external firewire drive), I've uninstalled all recently added software, deleted and re-checked all my preferences (e.g. system config folder in prefs) and made sure there are no options ticked to wake my computer.
I can't figure out what might be going on to cause the problem, although the hard disc does make intermittent noises as is something is writing to it/reading it - but there is nothing open apart from finder itself.
I've never had this problem with my powerbook (unlike other machines I've owned) until now...very frustrating!
Any ideas anyone?

Insomnia - - My Mac won't SLEEP

Hi folks,
I just re-installed OS 10.5.4, ... and began to have a couple buggy behaviours:
Primarily, my computer won't respond when I try to put it in SLEEP mode.
Also, there is a funky little 1/4" square that appears in every window that opens. Clicking & dragging over it makes it go away, but it then reappears on the next open window.
p.s. In an attempt to 'fix' these anomolies, I downloaded the upgrade to 10.5.8 but this didn't help.
Any ideas ????? (This is my second post... with no responses).

Mac won't sleep after adding Kensington Wireless Mouse

I've added a Kensington PilotMouse Laser Wireless to my system and now it won't sleep, without first switching off the mouse. Kensington has no info on this, is there a workaround?

The "sleep" that you describe is not sleep. Your mac has crashed but since it thinks it is sleeping there is nothing in the crash logs.
Sleep on modern computers is not just a hardware shutdown. Because X and XP are server based kernels they are designed to run 24/7 and do what they can to keep it that way. Deep sleep requires an orderly shut down of processes and loading their status into memory so that when it wakes, all is as it was.
There are many things that can prevent sleep. Usb devices are designed to wake a mac on a change of state (doing something). When my mac did what yours did the only fix for it was an erase and install. I tried all the other solutions but the only one that worked was an erase and install.
If you care to try some of the "fixes" then here are some.
Reset the pmu.

• Trash all caches (system and user)
• Mac OS X power management is sensitive to malfunctions in USB devices.
Remove USB peripherals, one at a time
• Mac will not sleep if Applications/processes continuously writing to the Console logs.
Launch Console in Applications/Utilities and check both the console.log and system.log logs for blocks of recurring messages written therein that repeat at high frequency.
Note: the console.log file should open by default when you launch Console.
• Quit System Preferences.... Navigate to ....
/Library/Preferences and delete.....com.apple.AutoWake.plist
Enter your Admin password, when prompted.
•If this does not solve the problem, your Energy Saver preferences may be corrupt.
Navigate to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration (folder) and delete.
com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
com.apple.AutoWake.plist
Enter your Admin password, when prompted.
• and finally....
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ and delete......
com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

Mavericks: sound issues after wakeup mac air from sleep

So I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue...
I updated Mavericks(10.9) a few days ago. Every time I put my laptop to sleep or close it, and then I wake it... it did something very bizarre. My laptop woke up... kind of... there is no sound. The buttons on the keyboard work well, I can increase or decrease the volume even mute it, but I can't hear any sounds. u can play the moives, musics, just no sound.
In that case, I have to restart my laptop then it's ok. But if I close or sleep it, it happens again.
It's boring me a lot, I hope there's anyone who can tell me how to fix it.

MacBook Pro will not sleep when charging and display is closed.

Hi,
My Mac will not sleep when it is charging. When I close my display, it will not sleep.
When I unplug the power cable, it sleeps...
I've tried to reset the SMC, and I think i did, the charger went from green to red etc different colours..
Does anybody know what this might be?

This is how to fix it, and i guarantee u its 90% the cause.!
first of all, if you are a lion user (most likely all of you with this problem) go to system preferences, and then to sharing. turn all sharing OFF. especially printers....
open a terminal, and type in :
pmset -g assertions
This will show u if somehting is preventing ur mac from sleeping. on the left colomn, it should say "PreventSystemSleep" and on the right colomn a number. mine was one, which is probably the same for you guys.
Go to system preferences > Print & Scan > Open Print Queue. Make sure all the printing queues are empty and nothing is in there. You do not need to pause any or anything like that just make sure nothing is in the queue.
Close your macbook lid and look at ur light it should be sleeping. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR U
