My Mac is old with a cracked screen...what should I do?

My mac is 6 years old with a cracked screen and dead charger (for the second time!) Is it worth replacing? I'm thinking the replacement will range anywhere from 300-800 and last time i checked, chargers are $80! My last charger which I got over this past summer died unexpectidly. I am a broke college student so I am highly considering a PC for now (which are cheap!)...that is if the charge for replacing the screen and such are not too expensive. Please help!

You can get the screen repaired for $125 plus S&H http://cgi.ebay.com/APPLE-MACBOOK-13-SCREEN-REPAIR-/190533203936?pt=Apple_Laptop s&hash=item2c5ca9f7e0
You can get a new power adapter on eBay for about $20

  • Need advice on selling a 14" iBook with a cracked screen

    hi,
    I have badly cracked screen on my 14" 1.42ghz,80GB hard drive iBook - less than a year old. It's still usable, but I've decided I want to sell it, but can only fetch about $400 on craigslist.
    My question is, what could I get if the screen was repaired?I can have the whole thing done for about $450 at macservice.com, but would hope to sell it off for at least $900, meaning I would make $450 as opposed to $400, which isn't really worth the hassle to me.
    Should I try selling it on ebay with a cracked screen? Get it repaired and THEN go on ebay? is there a way to get it repaired for cheaper?
    many thanks...
    iBook 1.42 GHz G4 (1.5) 14"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   80GB; 512GB RAM;

    Although some people speak of limited response or little action from
    individual instances of their results from contacting AppleCare about
    repairs for situations such as your iBookG4 14's display damage,
    have you tried talking to someone at Apple about your situation and
    how this odd damage came to pass; from just having the computer
    sitting asleep for some time, then turning it on to find the crack in there?
    Seems to me if it was still running due to some other problem, the heat
    from the closed display (though you thought it was asleep, maybe it was
    going defective in another way and overheated, too?) cracked the panel.
    You may have to ask around, politely, to see if you can talk to someone
    in Sales Support if you get a blank wall in AppleCare service support. If
    you have the additional coverage of the AppleCare Protection Plan, that
    gives you the up to 3 years of phone-in support (and troubleshooting, etc)
    along with the additional years of hardware repairs, to three years, too.
    The contact numbers in the Apple web site have changed somewhat in
    the past two years; you may find Sales Support numbers in your original
    documentation, and this may get you around the charge to talk to some
    one about a repair when you really want to be assured you can get it
    repaired when it appears to have overheated while asleep and when you
    woke it up, the display was damaged... While it was sitting, all the while;
    and not mistreated in any way... You've posted on this matter before;
    but you did not say if you had any contact with someone in authority at
    Apple Support or Apple Sales Support. Best of luck in this matter!

    Don't worry, this is probably just Verbose Mode. It's perfectly harmless.  If you're not specifically invoking it, than it's probably down to an unwanted setting in NVRAM.  See this article on resetting NVRAM if it continues to bother you.

    I have a iPhone 4S with a cracked screen and I believe it needs a SIM card. My question is what would be the cheapest way to repair it completely?

    I would replace it out of warantee for the 200. but if you really need to save a few bucks
    iphone repair store (craked glass) - $150
    new sim card (if charged for one) - $20
    but getting another one for 200 (through insurance) will give you a year warantee
    no insurance, no $200 option

    Resolve communication issues
    Check the hosts file or TCP/IP filtering, which might cause communication issues between iTunes, ports, and servers.

    That number is for an apple server in the UK that is used for iMessage activation.  A hidden SMS is snet to that number when you turn iMessage on and is used to verify your phone number.  I suggest you turn iMessage off.  In settings/phone turn on dial assist.  Check with your carrier to see if you can send an international SMS as you end that possibility to activate iMessage.  Rest your phone (Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).) then turn iMessage back on.

    - If you did not charge the iPod for a couple of hours before you did the reset then charege and reset:
    Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Then connect to your computer and if iTunes sees the iPod restore via iTunes.
    - Next see if recovery mode will allow iTunes to see the iPod so you can restore the iPod. For recovery mode:
    iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

    When it gets bad enough, you will need to replace the screen.
    Your warranty covers defects in material and workmanship.
    That sounds like accidental damage -- glass does not tend to crack spontaneously.
    Check your homeowners insurance to see if there might be coverage.

    My mac book pro is running really slow what should I do?

    Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
    If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
    Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
    Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
    OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
    An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
    Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:

              OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware

    If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
    I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
    If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
    For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
        used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
        requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
    Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
    Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
    Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
    Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
    Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
    Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
    Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

    Hi Chuck,
    TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...

    I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.

    Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.
    Also...
    The last really supported Flash for PPC was 10.1.102.64, but if it's for like Facebook or such, people have been fooling FB to think they have a leter version installed.

    Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

  • After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

    After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

    My gmail, which is correctly configured for Mail with gmail SMTP and Google IMAP, works for awhile on Mail, which I leave open while working on other applications. But several times a day I get msg from Google: "We recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account" . . . and requiring me to verify my account details, re-enter passwords, confirm security settings (or change them from "disable" to "enable less secure methods" and so on). In Mail I also have tried "taking all accounts online", and re-entering my gmail password inside Mail account settings. These steps successfully re-set comms between gmail and Mail ... for awhile, then it happens again. Enough occurrences over a work day that I just quit Mail and revert to accessing gmail directly. Apple Care advisor and an Apple knowledge base article say that Apple can't deal with this, as gmail is third-party app, and they refer me to gmail, and so far I've found nothing helpful there.
    From today I also have several instances of a window saying "Mail has unexpectedly closed" and asking me to Re-open it.
    I also use Yahoo mail, which stops working with Mac Mail at the same time as gmail, but I do not receive notices to re-verify from Yahoo.
    I recently upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. The Mail problem happened occasionally with Mavericks but is far more frequent with Yosemite.
