My mac is running slow and locking up
My laptop recently started running slowing and giving me the colored circle to indicate it is thinking. I didn't think Mac's got viruses, but this feels like one. It slow when I type and search the internet.
Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU|I/O' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.
If you get output like this:
kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info Start **
kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info End **
there's a fault in the graphics processor or logic board. The two kinds of output are not mutually exclusive, but if you get both, a logic-board fault is likely.

Dec 14, 2014, 07:21:27 PM Self test - passedPlease describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
The many "failed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews mean nothing. Those warnings are not a reason to reinstall the OS, or to do anything else at all. They should be ignored.
The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup. -

Running slow and locking up, additional tests for hd, memory?
My iBook has slowed to a crawl recently, and I suspect hardware problems, maybe the hard drive or memory. I've tried all hte usual things (disk repair, fix permissions, reinstalling the last update, running in safe mode) but the computer runs slow and at times just stops -- earlier today it stopped responding or refreshing anythign but the spining ball for >20 min, at which point I did a hard reboot, and it took it almost another 20 minutes to reboot. I've run the hardware tests from the utility disk a few times but nothing shows up. The only thing of note in the system log is that lookupd seems to die and restart pretty often, and around when it locked up earier today there are lots of messages about "IOATAController device blocking bus."
It took it more than 10 minutes to boot and for me to log in this time, and a few more minutes to display the contents of the hard drive, but when I finally got Disk Utility up, it still said SMART Status: verified. However I hit the "verify disk" button, and the computer has been locked up for about 10 minutes now with nothing more than 'Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"' in the status window and nothing but the spinning beach ball when I try to do anything else. I'll let it go and see if it ever recovers.
I have a recent bootable clone, but even small file writes can take an hour now, so I can't imagine a complete copy ever finishing. After more research on the message "IOATAController device blocking bus" I find that a few people who get that are able to recover by using disk utility from the install disk and doing a disk repair, but most end up with their hard drive needing to be replaced. I've done the first a few times now with no improvement, so I'm guessing I'm headed for the second. The local Apple Store had no more appointments available today but I'm going to try and get in tomorrow. -
My Mac us running slow and i dont know have to investigate why?
HI Everyone my Mac is running slow.... i have used tools to clean up unwanted files. Looked at how much my files are takng up i have 41.1GB left out of 319G Mac Hardrive could this be the reason?
Do i need to move all my movies and audi files to a external hard drive will this speed up my mac?
Thanks CamYou have plenty of disk space.
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
Power book runs slow and locks up
My powerbook G4 runs slow and then locks up and I have to force quit. A window pops up and say something to the effect that:
" a script is runing in this movie causing Macromedia Flash to run slow. If I dont turn it off it will get worst."
I am not runing a movie (?) nor a script that I know of. What can I do?Welcome to the Apple discussions.
One place to start is to load the activity monitor, on your hard disk in applications/utilities, look at active tasks, and see what's running. -
Mac suddenly running slow and freezing frequently after software update
Hi, first post. I have recently wiped my hard drive after my new macbook pro started crashing frequently and suddenly running slow, however, it all seemed fine for a few days until I ran the software update, and after failing because it was unable to "expand", everything started running slowly and freezing left right and center.
This is really grinding my gears, and I have been looking for solutions online for ages now, can anyone here help?coove wrote:
I'm sure that my laptop isn't that broken since it is quite new (september).
You are still under warranty. Call Apple Care and get a case number.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years. You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty. Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired. -
Mac mini running slow and freezed during operation
I am running a 2011 MacMini. It is used for our worship services and recording. I am having issues with it freezing and slowing down. Usually we only have Propresenter ( presentatio program) and Gargeband (recording) running. I get the wait wheel and sometimes have to reboot to get going again. I have upgraded from 2 to 8 gig and also upgraded to the lion os. I have moved all files to an external drive. Any suggestions
Hi, you've mentioned some of this, but...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

My mac is running slower and less responsive than it should be.
When I check "about this mac - storage", the labels are not shown accurately, with 'other' saying zero kb but having the largest coloured portion on the chart. Applications take longer than expected to load. Not a great deal of time but I do feel that the mac is not responding as fast as it should when loading applications, starting up, shutting down etc. Can anyone reccomend how to improve performance or tell me a good applicationg to download to clean it up, provide internet security and improve speed.
From the menu bar, select
▹ System Preferences ▹ Spotlight ▹ Privacy
The list of items excluded from Spotlight indexing is shown (it may be empty.) Click the plus (“+”) icon to add an item to the list. Select your volume (under DEVICES) and add it to the list. Then remove it from the list by selecting it and clicking the minus (“-“) icon.
Spotlight will rebuild the index. If you try to do a Spotlight search now from the magnifying-glass icon in the top right corner of the display, a pulsing dot will appear in the icon. When the dot disappears, the indexing is complete. -

My mac is running slow and when i go as guest it loads fast. Can somebody help me please?
What Mac and OS?
Try a repair in Recovery Mode AND do a SAFE BOOT MODE.
Backup first, should be already.
I would be careful using a system that may have directory errors.
Create a new standard user account if the hard drive is sarfe to use and no errors.
Then migrate to the new account or find what in yours is offending and cauing problems.
Maybe from prior OS?
Started happening with 10.9? upgraded over 10.8?
Anytime a system freezes, STOP. Any hard or forced freeze, assume there is going to be need to repair and correct the hard drive directory.
Doesn't sound like networking or internet - is it only mail and web browser you have had trouble?
Then reset and clear the browser and use its safe launch mode.
Problems with Mavericks and Mail -- I'd say look in Mavericks forums. -

My mac is running slow. Can i take it in to get wiped out
My mac is running slow. and it won't let me update some things. Can i take it to a mac store for them to "clean" my mac?
Yes, they can erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS, but so can you.
In order to help, need more info:
What OS version are you running?
Which year/model for your Mac?
Run this little utility and post the results here:

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.
