These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

I got a problem with my Mac Pro 4.1, when I turn on the mac the chime sounds after 20 - 30 secs and later on the white or gray screen appears. I had reset the PRAM, changed the coin battery, tested with the "Apple Hardware Test" (no problem at all). I have 20Gb (4X4GB, 4X1GB) of Ram, five hard drives attached to it. I thought that the problem was the hard drive with the OSX (10.8.2), got changed with a new one with a new OSX on it, two hard drives of 2Tb with RAID "lvl 1", two hard drives of 640Gb. When my mac goes to sleep, sometimes when I try to wake it up I hear the sound that wokes up but got no image on display, so I have to force shut down and then turn it on again.
I try dettaching all the hard drives except the one that has the OSX, thought it might be problem of the RAID. I did experiment that my mac freezed and then restart.
Please someone help me with this problem!

Sorry for my english that is not so good.Snow Leopard seems to be the most solid OS.
SSDs can be iffy.
Anyone's RAM can cause or be a problem.
But you said it started before those.
"problem with the hard drive..." is too general and really rare. You would have to have bad sectors or something and not been able to map those out. Any drive can ship that way (not just mapped out at the factory). Zero all from Disk Utilty is not guarantee to resolve those.
Also rare to have a clone not work, SSDs being likely candidate and finiky.

Mac Running Slow: General Tips & Advice (Kappy)

Power mac g5, slow start up continues
My original problem was, No wake up chime when I pushed the power button and of course I'd do a force shutdown and try to re-start which took about 3 or 4 times before it would finally start, so one day when I went to start it, I pushed the power button and "no chime" so I left it sit for a while leading to high speed fans for 5 minutes or so, I then shut it down, pressed the power button and it started on the second time, and since then I've noticed that if I let the fans run for a few minutes letting things heat up, it will always start up the second time... When I posted my issue, a suggestion was made to do the hair dryer trick,,,,Ok, I did the Hair Dryer Trick "twice" once with the memory in and once with the memory out, " However, I noticed that after putting the memory back in, I now have a very slow starting G5,,I thought that maybe something may have happened in the operating system, so, I've gone from Tiger to Leopard and back to tiger again just to find that I have the same problem, keep in mind that, once it dose wake up, all seems to run just fine no matter which OS I run.
Now, as far as the memory, I have 7 gig and they are as follows, 6 at 1 gig each and 2 at 512 = 7 gig. Besides having to install them in pairs, is there a special order that they should go?, cause now that I've thought about it, the slow start up problem seemed to start after I took the memory out and re installed it and I'm sure that I didn't re install them in the same order they were in but I did install them in pairs, maybe this is causing the slow wake up,
Anyway, this is everything that I've done so far. Now, I read another suggestion about removing the logic board and re heating all the solder joints around the memory slots, no problem there, I am a tech for 25 years, but just hate to waste a lot of time if this won't work.
So my question after all this is, dose the logic board need to be replaced? or is the memory mismatch causing a problem?
Thanks
DennisHi Dennis,
Not likely a RAM order problem, but I have read that bigger pairs should be 1st,(inner), is all the RAM reported correctly n System Profiler?
It may help to pull the board & heat, or reflow in an oven if you know how to protect the plastic parts. -
Hi all,
All of a sudden our Mac Mini bought in early 2010 is very slow on start up. In fact it's been on the grey screen now for 20mins with the spinning timer & looking like not much is happening.
It's a Mac Mini Server but it's just used to hold our MYOB Account Edge Network Edition data file. We recently upgraded from MYOB Account Edge V8 to V13. It has been a bit troublesome since then, with FileConnect2013 cutting out. But it had been working OK the last few days. Then today I had to force quit & now it wont start back up again.
Any hints? Thanks.Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. -
My Mac Mini set up is slow and won't proceed. It is as if the keyboard is not working but the are sounds and it is just not progressing. I have not gotten past "Select your WiFi" in the past 3 hours.
Never mind. Since my mouse was not connected...apparantly the space bar is how you "enter" selections...Duh!

I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro.
I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro (8 Core 2.93GHz). When I run the Mac Pro with 2 x 2Gb RAM it takes 4 seconds before the gray screen, chime and spinning wheel appear. However when I expand the RAM to 20GB the grey screen and chimes appear after a long 20+ second black screen.
The RAM modules are paored 2 x 4GB Crucial CT51272BA1339.M18FMR and 6 x 2GB SAMSUNG M391B5673FH0-CH9, all DDR3 ECC.
Reading articles on the internet, I thought it may be damaged RAM modules, but I have completed memtest and all are okay. I have tried changing the pairs around and if I use any paired 2 modules the Mac Pro starts normally, only when I try running more than 2 modules the delayed start up happens. (black screen 20 Seconds)
I also have tried PRAM and SMU resets after changing the RAM setups, and the issues always occurs when I have more than 2 modules. As you can see I have 6 SAMSUNG modules and even with identical modules the issue happens, when increasing the RAM to more than 2 modules.
The Mac Pro runs fine after the start up screen and can see all the modules, but has anyone else come across this issue, or have any ideas as to why my Mac Pro is taking 20 seconds to start up with 20 GB RAM?Hi there. Thanks for your comments.
I have tried all the different combinations of RAM setup, and as stated in my initial topic, the Mac Pro boot up time only slows when I have more that 2 modules. Where I place these does not seem to make a difference.
I have taken the Mac Pro to an Apple Reseller technician yesterday and they where not able to find any RAM errors. Apparently the boot up time is within Apple's acceptable parameters for this set up.
Could anyone that is running a Mac Pro 2009 with more that 4 modules of RAM, please let me know if the boot up time is normal. ( the time it takes from pressing the power button to seeing the gray screen around 16 - 20 seconds)
Or is anyone else having the same issues?
thanks for your responce -

Slow start up and Shut Down since upgrading to Mountain Lion - Etrecheck Result query
Hello, I have recently upgraded my operating system from Snow Leopard to the latest Mountain Lion from the app store. My Macbook Pro (early 2010) is now experiencing slow start up times (more than 1 minute) and slow shut down (more than 45 seconds). Programs such as iPhoto and Firefox are now taking a long time to start up too and the multicoloured wheel is appearing a lot.It was always snappy and very quick with Snow Leopard. I have seen that quite a lot of people seem to have had similar issues too.
I have Verified and Repaied my disk, reset SMC, and PRAM numerous times and cleared the system caches, as well as making a new user account and opened in Safe Mode. "Searchlight" has finished indexing. Nothing I've done so far has helped the issue. I have run an Etrecheck and note that a few things have "failed", the results are below. Does anyone know what these items do or how to correct them? These could be the cause of the issue as they are Apple items - e.g. account, ID and @me.com processes.
I did not do a clean/fresh installation of Mountain Lion, but I did verify the Snow Leopard disk before I installed it. I'm thinking perhaps to do a clean install but I'm not sure if this will resolve the "failed" Etrecheck issues or not?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance.

Firefox has slow start up & I have the latest version. IE, Chrome, AOL start right away. Firefox takes up to 10 minutes.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== when updated to 3.6You may need to use '''[[Safe Mode]]''' (click on "Safe Mode" and read) to localize the problem. Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes <u>'''before'''</u> starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.

You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window. -
Slow start up, slow start up
So i have the 2011 mac pro just 3 months old realy fast, lately ive been getting a slow start up.
Im doing music using garageband for now, lots of tracks sometimes im doing 12 tracks at once.

Slow start up / "ghost programs"
I had some trouble with my harddisk when it filled up and became slow, so I made a clean install and copied back my things from Time Machine. But, and this problem happened before that too, my iMac takes forever to startup (about 5 minutes).
And every now and then a program (mostly iTunes) will become non-responsive, but apparently shuts down in a normal fashion when I close it. But the symbol in the dock will say it's still running, and in a mystical way... it is. Because force shut down doesn't work, neither with any program or a restart of the finder, and the only thing working is to do a cold restart of the machine. Interestingly, the activity monitor doesn't find the programs that hangs either, even if they are running.
I don't understand a thing right now...1. Check your Startup Disk. Go to System Preferences/Startup Disk and make sure that your Mac OS X system drive/folder is selected as your startup disk. Otherwise the system could take longer searching for it every time you boot.
CHECK
2. Repair Permissions. Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select your hard drive on the left and under the First Aid tab click Repair Disk Permissions.
CHECK
3. Verify Disk. While you are in Disk Utility after you Repair the Permissions click Verify Disk. This will check the integrity of your volume directory. If there are any errors that need to be addressed you will have to boot up to your install disk in order to run Repair Disk.
CHECK
4. Check your login items list. Go to System Preferences/Accounts/Login items. If there are any Applications there that should not be simply remove it from the list.
CHECK
5. Disconnect any external devices for testing purposes. External hard drives, ipods, scanners, printers, have been known at times to cause startup/shutdown issues.
NOT DONE YET
I've bought a new 1 TB MyBook today so I can remove a Maxtor-disk I have who's been difficult to read from (it doesn't always appear in the Finder), so I'm moving my music and different stuff right now and I'll have to wait some time to do a startup without external disks. In addition I have a 500 GB LaCie with two partions (250 on each, one for Time Machine) who seems to work fine.
It's the actual start up which is the problem, not the login process.
I can live with the slow start up for now, but my main problem is when iTunes and Xtorrent freezes and starts acting like a ghost. Any ideas there? It just happened with Xtorrent again now. It's shut down, but the dock indicates that it's still running... -
Xcode causing slow start up and shut down times
Hi,
Before installing Xcode my mac had a start up time of no more then 30 seconds and shutdown 5 seconds, since installing Xcode these have changed to 1 minute 15 seconds for start up and 10 seconds to shut down. Is this normal? My friends mac has done the exact same thing, is there any way to fix this without removing xcode?
Many Thanks,

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I have Xcode installed on my Mac but haven't noticed that it affects startup or shutdown times. Perhaps that's because I've had Xcode installed for a long time.
As far as I can tell Xcode has no "helper" applications that might slow startup or shutdown. You might look at the "Login Items" list in the Accounts panel of System Preferences to verify that.
I'd also launch the Console utility and search for any messages during the time your Mac is starting or shutting down to see if you can see anything that explains what you're seeing. -
Every app on my Mac crashes on start
Hello everyone!
Well this is not a joke, every app on my Mac crashes whenever in what condition. Finder, Pages, Keynote, System Preferences, System Information, Photoshop... all apps on my Mac crashes on start. This happened from I shutdown my Mac (normal condition) and I went to my friend's home then when I boot up my Mac all apps are dead. I think that it might be caused by HardDrive shock and damages the disk, so when I got home I headed to Apple's Internet Recovery to have a Hard Disk repair. At last nothing was changed after the repair. Before I head to my friends home, my Mac was totally fine and I didn't download anything to my Mac (might not be a virus).
What should I do please help me! Thanks! My VMWare Fusion no longer works. The other apps aren't crashing, but I have inconveniences. TextEdit no longer brings up a new document right away. Safari sometimes shows my bookmarks when I don’t want to see them. It might even be slower. The Messages App doesn’t let me send text messages to people who don’t have iMessage. In Logic at one point my menu bar disappeared. And of course, the name reminds me of Sarah Palin and John McCain.
In TextEdit I couldn't see the I-beam cursor.
The Mail App might appear slower because it doesn’t show old messages right away.
I do like some of the new features, like Maps, and freezing ads, but I was expecting a more seamless transition.
And look, my fonts are different sizes above.
I posted here because it was taking too long to load the main discussion list with 18,000 items.

Mac Running Slow after Yosemite
I have upgraded this machine but now applications hang. I have cleared the cache, deleted applications such as Chrome, repaired permissions and turned off any start up applications.
This is the EtreCheck output. I am not sure how to read it - are there other items I should delete or amend? Thanks

How large is your HD AND how much space do you have left?
If you have not already done so, repair permissions and restart your computer. Instructions for doing so are in the OS Help menu and in KB.
If repairing permissions do not work try the following:
Boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu. When done, restart back to your desktop, repair permissions and restart your computer. Check out: Troubleshoot the spinning beach ball
Regarding your slow start up: System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items - get rid off all you do not want and/or need.
