My Mac is turning into a Windows PC (ref: preposterous datagram length)

Hi,
The title of this thread is actually pretty descriptive of what is happening. I'm not going back to Windows (I don't think) but for the last few days my Mac has been behaving like a Windows machine. Every 3 or 4 hours I have to reboot my computer because it starts going slower and slower until I cannot work anymore. Everything slows down to a crawl. I cannot switch windows. There is a huge lag between the time I type a character and the character appears on screen. If you have worked with Windows, you know that this was a fairly frequent affair and you were used to have to reboot your machine every once in a while. I thought those days were over :-(
Can anybody help me figure out what is going on? I would be very thankful.
OK, if I'm asking for your help, there is some information that I'm going to have to provide. Here it is:
  Model Name:    iMac
  Model Identifier:    iMac11,1
  Processor Name:    Intel Core i7
  Processor Speed:    2,8 GHz
  Number Of Processors:    1
  Total Number Of Cores:    4
L2 Cache (per core):    256 KB
  L3 Cache:    8 MB
  Memory:    8 GB
  Processor Interconnect Speed:    4.8 GT/s
  Boot ROM Version:    IM111.0034.B02
As you can see, I have plenty of processing power and memory. I have taken a screenshot of the activity monitor screen at the time the slowdown started. I'm including it here .
As you can see, there is plenty of RAM available. I have a utility that monitors memory and I was able to see that during the whole session I always had at least 4GB of free memory. Yet, as you can also see, page outs are high (at least that what I think given what I normally see, or saw) and swap memory has been used.
The real culprit seems to be the process called 'WindowServer'. When the slowdown happens, this process consumes almost 100% of the cpu power and it stays there until I reboot.
I have checked the log files (system.log and windowserver.log) and I can see a lot of error messages that I don't understand. I include a selection below. I have deleted huge portions because the seem to be repetitions of the same error. What puzzles me particularly is the message "Preposterous datagram length xxxxx".
I also include links to the files just in case someone needs to see more information to figure out what is going on. You can find them here:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/447406/system.log
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/447406/windowserver.log
What I find even more surprising is that once it starts going slow there is nothing I can do to recover normalcy. I've tried a utility that frees up memory but it doesn't seem to do anything. I have even shutdown all applications but the computer is still painfully slow with no application activated (well, probably the Finder is always on as is revealed by the error messages).
As I said, I would be really thankful for any help anybody can provide to solve this problem.
Josep M.

@vjasonv
Lot of your problems apart from speaker issue may be due to depletion of free phone memory, mostly accounted for by either not deleting browser cache or too many emails stored upon device. If you go to Menu > Office > File mgr. - how much free phone memory remains?
As you are using microSD there is the ability to backup phone within File Mgr. if you can no longer obtain USB connectivity to utilise Nokia Suite for this purpose, although lack of phone memory may cause issues here also.

• When I am re-installing the Mac OSX snow leopard onto an older Mac I run into the window that says select the disk where you want to install Mac OSX but nothing is there to select

I am trying to re-install the Mac OSX snow leopard onto an older I mac with a new hard drive.  I run into the "select the disk "where you want to install Mac OSX but there is nothing in the window to select. Any advice?

After you install a new hard drive, you need to boot to another drive to initialize it to MAC OS Extended (journaled) format and create the partition(s) on the drive. You do this using Disk Utility. Otherwise, the mac operating install process doesn't see a formatted disk to install to.

• Backed-up Mac Files turn into EXE

Help please!
I am have such a bad time of it here. So many archived files created on my Mac once copied onto my HD (or even showing up in their storage, i.e., old ZIP, or even new LaCie drives) have changed to EXE icons. Can't open them, can't go into the orig. programs to open. Wierdness.
I know an EXE file is Windows and will not work on my Mac if or unless I have Windows loaded. However, just want the files I created but don't know why the Mac OS is converting them to EXE icons!
Any assistance is appreciated as I need to retrieve and use these (some are old PageMaker, FreeHand and PhotoShop files, except for PM which I now have InDesign) all should convert or at least be recognized.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Diane

The actual icon doesn't really matter. Somehow your files are getting associated with the wrong type of program.
Get the information for one of the files. Select an appropriate program for opening the file ("open with"). Try opening it. If that works then go back and get the information for the file and this time also select "use this application to open all files of this type).

• Tabs keep turning into new windows

I keep many tabs open both on this work computer and my home computer. This morning, at work, when I go into a tab, Firefox pops the tab out and turns it into a new window (and removes the tab from my regular viewing screen). This is quite frustrating. i don't have nearly as many tabs here as I have at home (where this has never happened) but I rely on tabs to keep things organized and streamlined. No particular rhyme or reason for this. It isn't happening every time or to every tab. But it keeps happening randomly.

Make sure that you do not drag a tab down in the browser window.
Firefox 3.5 versions and later have a feature called tear-off tabs.<br />
You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.<br />
You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.

• Firefox turns into small window when drag it or minimized

It was working perfectly and now when I want to drag it the browser becomes a very small window. The same happens if I click minimize or the other "medium size " command whatever t'call.
Tried restarting, closing and reopening and nothign has changed.

It's a problem with Windows 8 if you are using any pre-release version or try to reset Firefox!
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

• Convert a Mac iTunes library to a Windows iTunes library?

This sounds like heresy, but I've switched my home system from a ten year old Mac Powerbook, to a screamingly fast, new Dell laptop. I have a large iTunes library on the old Mac; s there a way I can convert my Mac iTunes Library into a Windows iTunes Library, or do I have to (gasp) rebuild the whole thing in Windows?

Hello autochthon,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To transfer your iTunes library to another computer just follow the steps in the article below.

• Using webmail in Mozilla Firefox 17.0.1 on Windows 8, original messages get turned into html code when I reply to or forward them. How can I fix this?

I have tried re-setting Firefox and working in Safe Mode, but the problem still recurs. I use Fastmail as my webmail server and never had this problem on Windows XP or Windows 7. When I reply to a message, the original message is turned into html code. The same happens when I forward a message.
My JavaScript is up to date, in case that's relevant. The Fastmail support team suggested the problem would be Firefox-related.
The other function of my Fastmail account that isn't working properly in Firefox 17.0.1. is the search function.
Do I need to get new plugins or something? I don't know where the HTML editor is in Firefox or if that's what's wrong.
Regards,
Rachel

Thanks for your reply, cor-el. Norton 360 came pre-installed on the laptop as part of the package I bought. I haven't changed the pre-set firewall or anti-virus settings. Should I change something?
I will try rebooting in Windows Safe mode as you say and report if that makes any difference.

• How can I turn my Mac using iTunes into an alarm clock?

Here's my question: How can I turn my Mac, using iTunes, into an alarm clock?
I want to be able to put my Mac to sleep but have it set up so that when it wakes up at the predetermined time iTunes will open and start playing the music I've selected....
A "musical alarm clock"...
A friend suggested using the Energy Saver option in Sys. Preferences to wake the computer at the right time. He said that then I could use iCal to start iTunes. I would then have to use an Apple Script to get iTunes to play the song I want.
But is there a SIMPLER way to do this? Are there any programs out there that do this already??
Thanks for any help....

I recently got a copy of AlarmClock Pro from MacWorld UK. It is shareware, I think it is (USD?)19. I haven't had a chance to try it out much, but it does look quite good. I have an older version. The latest version looks even better.
I'm sure there's plenty of freeware apps out there. You might also want to try looking here for an applescript here Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes

• EMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber

My eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber (kinda looks like I put a photoshop filter on it or something). I can't force quit when it does this, no error message, I've repaired permissions. Any ideas?

This doesn't help. but my first thought on seeing your picture was 'addressing bit failure in the video memory'. Unfortunately, as you already know, the video 'card' on the eMac is a chipset mounted to the logic board, and the only repair I'm aware of is replacement. An Apple Service Provider could give you an estimate but unless your eMac is still within the standard one-year hardware warrenty or you purchased the three-year ApplceCare extended warrenty, that's not an attractice cost-benefit tradeoff.
On the chance that I'm wrong and it's some unusual system corruption, look again for the Hardware Test disc. It can be tricky figuring out where it is; on early eMacs it was always a separate CD, on recent eMacs it's a partition on the Restore DVD, and on models in between, it depends on whether the OS X Install disc was on a DVD or not. You might try booting from your OS X Install or Restore disc using Startup Manager to see if Hardware Test is on a partition.
If nothing else, booting off the OS X Install disk (as if you were going to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk to check the drive) should further confirm if the problem is in the video hardware rather than in the hard drive's OS: if the broken display appears when booted from the OS X Install disc, it's pretty certainly the video hardware.

• My pointer keeps turning into a colorful spinning pinwheel. Mac OS X (10.5.8) using a wireless mouse and keyboard, desktop computer

My pointer keeps turning into a colorful spinning pinwheel. Mac OS X(10.5.8) using a wireless mouse and keyboard ,desktop computer.

The spinning wait cursor (or "beachball") generally means there's some problem that's causing the current app to freeze, or slowing down the current application, or that's slowing down the whole system.
Here's an overview of the spinning wait cursor.
Make a backup first, using the Disk Utility tool booted from your installation DVD to external storage.  This backup to ensure you still have access to your most current and complete data, shut this be a problem with your hardware.
Then use Utilities > Activity Monitor.app and the Utilities > Console.app tools to see what's going on, and whether there are related errors being logged.
There are some general troubleshooting articles around, too.
