My mac isnt reading my dvds

I have tried inserting a few dvds into my computer and it isnt reading them or says that they are blank discs.
I have tried restarting my computer and checked for a software update

If you use the SuperDrive often it's probably dirty, go to  your local office supply store and get a CD/DVD drive cleaning kit and clean the laser per the instructions. Then try again, if that doesn't work then try different brand DVDs.

  • Mac not reading certain DVDs.....

Can someone offer a download/quickfix to this problem? One DVD in particular works fine on my DVD player connected to my TV, but will not read on my computer.
Is there something I can download to improve the readability of the software? I have Toast 7 and IDVD, but I think the problem isn't with either player, but something with the machine.
    Thoughts ?

Many have reported mixed results reading DVDs on Macs and here are the most common reasons:
    1. If these are all commercial movie DVDs, and they are the standard size on
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
and the problem is strictly with playing movies, I'd contact Apple here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
    2. There are some programs in the media content of discs that only work on Windows or a special DVD Player called Interactual Player. http://player.interactual.com/default.asp?code=MAC
    3. If these are homemade DVDs it gets stickier. Many people burn to DVD something other than the standard Video_TS folders, thus they aren't playable in a standard DVD Players. DVD-R DL is not as supported as DVD+R DL.
Older Macs don't support DVD+R DL or single layer at all. To find out if yours does, check the specs of your Mac:
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html
If the Mac only supports CD-ROM, CD-RW, or CD-R, then it doesn't support DVD at all. Combo drive Macs support playing DVD-ROM and DVD-R discs, but now DVD-RW or DVD+R unless the specs actually say those formats are supported. Superdrive Macs of varying vintages may support DVD-R, and DVD-RW, but not DVD+R or DVD+RW when it comes to burning.
PC burnt DVDs in UDF or Joliet may not read at all whereas those burnt in ISO 9660 have a much better chance of being read. For UDF, you may need:
    http://www.softarch.com/us/products/rdvd.html
    4. DVDs burnt for different regions than a region locked DVD drive may also not play:

  • Have a canon dc310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's. How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's?Camcorder unable to connect to computer. Will a mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device? Which device works well with a mac?

I have a Canon DC310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's and doesn't have the ability to connect to a computer.  How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's?  Will the mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device?  Which device works well with the Mac?  Do I need anything else to get the dvd material onto my mac?  Thanks!!

No DV port in camcorder.  Just a yellow AV port/hole.  I did find a Canopus ADVC110 device in a box that was bought several years ago to convert VHS tapes onto DVD's.  Can I use this with a Mac?  Could I connect a dvd player to the Canopus and transfer the disks onto my Mac?  Or, connect the camcorder via AV port to the Canopus and that to the Mac and transfer that way?  Thanks again!

  • My mac won't read my dvd. It says its blank although I know its has 4GB worth of photos. Anyone know how to read this dvd ?

I am new to I Mac and my photo dvd which has 4GB of photos on it wont play in the mac. It says that the dvd is blank ??. The dvd was closed when I last used it on my windows machine and I can still read /view the photo if I load it up on the windows PC. Anyone have any ideas OR am I missing something obvious.
    Regards

It sounds like the file format extension that the photos are encoded in might not be native to Apple's OSX.  You might download a 3rd party application such as VuePrint to your iMac, which is capable of opening all common image formats.
Does Windows on your PC tell you what format the photos are encoded in?  .Jpeg, .Tiff, etc.?
    Hope this helps

  • Is there any way to get my mac to read an unfinalized dvd

Is there any way to get my mac to read an unfinalized dvd made from a dvd recorder a few years ago?

Not that I'm aware of.  I'm curious: is it a DVD-RW type of DVD, by any chance?

  • My mac will read a data cd, but nothing else, no dvd,no music cd.

my mac will read a data cd, but nothing else, no dvd,no music cd.

So, the superdrive reads data CDs and the install DVD, but not the others. In that case, get yourself a lens cleaner, such as http://www.amazon.com/Allsop-23321-Carbon-Edge-CD-Drive-Cleaner/dp/B00000J1QM/re f=pd_cp_e_3, and if that doesn't do the trick, you'll need to visit an Apple repair station.

  • My Mac Pro won't read any dvd-r discs

It reads regular dvd movies, and  dvd +r fine. any suggestions? I'm running os 10.6.8 on a Quad care 2.8 gig machine. Thanks.

I had same issue with the Sony DW-D150A drive in my Mac Pro.  Burned DVD with iDVD, then it would not read it.  Based on looking at other threads on this, I tried the "Laser Lens Cleaner" from Target ($5.69).
Now it reads the DVD's burned with iDVD.  However, it still has some issues with DVD +RW recorded by my DVD Recorder (Magnavox).  My PC's and old G5 can read those fine, but they are not in the best shape (scratches).
I would definitely start with the Lens Cleaner.

  • My iMac doesnt want to read/run the Mac OS X Install DVD, what can I do?

My iMac doesnt want to read/run the Mac OS X Install DVD, what can I do? What I want to do is format my mac, so I need to run de DVD Installer when the Mac start up holding C buttom. Is there any other way to do it?

You must be using the original grey OS X discs that shipped with the machine or a retail OS X installation disc.
If you are attempting to use a grey OS X disc that did not ship with your iMac, it will not work since they are machine-specific.
Other than those reasons, it is possible the disc is dirty or scratched, or your optical drive has simply failed. In the latter event you need to replace it or use an external optical disc drive, or boot your iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode and use another Mac to read the disc.

  • I did disk utility, and verify disk and it asks to repair the disk using dvd installer...but when i insert the dvd- restart- hold c, it keep ejecting and can't read the dvd....i tried with my friends dvd too, but still fail...mac osx v10.6.7

    someone pls help me

Well there is Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck witch includes step by step instructions to run disk repair without the install disk.
But before doing that, it's a good idea to backup. You may want to troubleshooting your superdrive / disk before hand. if I disk repair fails you may need the disk working to re-install the OS.
Dose the computer read any DVDs? if no, you may want to use Troubleshooting the slot load optical disc drive.
