My Mac just shuts down

Looking for any answer on why my Mac just shuts down at times. It doesn't matter if I have a full battery or have it plugged in, there are random times when my computer just shuts completely down and I can't figure out why that is. Has anyone else experience this? Any thoughts on why it is happening?

do a software update, if that doesnt work, try opening disk utility in user\applications\utilities. then repair disk permissions. if that still doesnt work, then reset the pmu and pram. reset the pmu by shutting down, disconnecting the battery and powercord, and holding down the power button for 5 secs. i know this sounds ridiculous but it actually does something. next reset the pram by connecting a both power sources and holding the option-apple-r-and p keys. press the power button while holding down those keys and hold the keys until you see the grey apple and the spinning gear. (if you want to, just press the first three, press the power button, and then immediately press the p key. if this Still doesn't work...then your in an even bigger pickle than you are right now...which isnt much of a pickle...nothing should get erased from your hard drive just to let you know...

  • IMac just shuts down after a safe mode run

    Hi,
Suddenly after years of 'normal' run, my iMac is booting into safe mode continuously (spinning cog and progress bar). I did a PRAM reset, made sure the shift key is not stuck, unplugged all my USB/ethernet peripherals.
But the more curious thing is, after the progress bar finishes, my mac just shuts down ! If I restart it, I go through the whole cycle again !
Is this a known behaviour ?
    Thanks,
    Avinash

    (editing for clarity of thread)
Yes - just did that. Ran the Disk Utility -> Repair Disk (in Recovery mode) and I think I see the problem. It says,
"Error : Disk Utility can't repair disk... disk, and restore your backed-up files"
I am assuming it is asking me to restore from a time machine backup ?

Do you mean that you did a soft-reset ?
Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data and also Clear History
If that doesn't fix it then try closing Safari via the iPad's multitaskingbar and see if it works when you re-open it :double-click the home button to open the taskbar and then swipe or drag the Safari app's 'screen' up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
After trying the above you could also do a soft-reset (even if this is what you've already done it might be worth trying after clearing Safari's cache and closing the app via the taskbar) : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mac mini shut down on its own, will not restart, grey screen, spinning wheel. Unplugged everything, will still not restart. Did safe boot, will not restart after safe boot, only grey screen with spinning wheel.

Mac mini shut down on its own. Could not restart, chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Unplugged everything but monitor, still only chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Started in safe boot, shut Down, will not restart.
This happened a couple of months ago, unplugged everything and it restarted, now that won't work.

    Hi BDAqua,
I just did the repair as you suggested. T ran the disc repair, and twice it cam back, the volume macintosh seems ti be okay, I also ran the verify and permissions repair, both came back okay.
I was actually hoping that they would find something, so they could repair. I shut the computer down, and restated with out holding a key, and I started up great. I'm baffled.  I have moved 20 GB to an external hard drive, as I only had 10% open space.
I have Tech Tool 6, would you recommend to run a repair check on that, or just leave well enough alone.
I agree with you on the new Mac's, I have problems with no disc for back up, until they realize their mistake I will stay with Snow a Leopard. This is the first problem I have experienced, so I can't complain. Their last programs are not as perfected as under Steve, prior to his handling over the reins, hope this is not going to be the future we can expect from Apple.
I will wait to here back as to your suggestion regarding the Tech Tool check
    Thanks for all your help.
    Gratefully,
    Cheri

  • Macpro 17inch just shut down while using.  Tried removing battery and SMC to no avail.  Have had this problem before over the last six months but would always restore.  Now you just click on the power button front light stays on for 2 sec

Hi, My 17 inch Mac pro laptop just shut down and I can't get it to turn on again.  This has happen multiple times over the last six months.  Looked through the forum and tried removing the battery and resetting the SMC control to no avail. I was having issues also with the screen a month ago but that resolved by itself.  When I took it into the genius bar for screen problems I was told I'd probably need a new CPU board because the vram may be going bad and they just don't fix that
problem.  Have held off because of a potential $500 repair and awaiting ivy bridge technology.  Does anyone in the community know how I can restart my portable.  Right now you turn on the machine and the front light stays on for 2 sec and you hear the machine click off?

I think you may have already been told what the problem is.  However look at this and maybe it will help:

  • Mac is shutting down without warning

    Hi.
Yesterday I suffered a freeze on my Mac pro (early 2009). After this, I couldn't boot from the original boot disc (verbose mode gave an error about a missing file called BootCache.playlist). Luckily (I thought) I have Time Machine and a second, cloned drive, so I booted from the clone and continued to work.
Overnight, I restored a Time Machine backup to the orignal boot disk, but this failed to boot also, so I continued to boot and work from my clone drive (this is a work machine, and I'm on a deadline). I decided to wipe my original boot disc, and use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore my boot drive from my clone drive.
This appeared to complete fine, however, this also refused to boot, and when booting with the Alt key held down, there was no recovery partition (just a somethine called 'EFI' something). So, continuing to work from my clone drive, my Mac suddenly started shutting down again – no warnings, just a brief freeze, then black screen, booting to the 'You Mac unexepectedly shut down ...' message. This happened repeatedly, usually about three minutes after booting up.
I've now resorted to reinstalling Mavericks (10.9.2) onto my original boot drive, in preparation for a TM restore – however, as a double-check, I thought I'd do a quick Disk Utility check on the original boot drive, seeing as my Recovery partition had now been reinstalled, and I get an error saying "The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system." DU can't repair it though – it just says "Live file system repair is not supported".
Does anyone have any experience of this EFI warning / error, and is there any way around it?

    HI Arthur.
I did think that the EFI warning could be a spurious error (I've had a few such errors before).
In desperation, I wiped my original boot disc, installed a fresh Mavericks OS, and then restored from TM, but from a backup before the original shutdowns occured (luckily I have multiple backups for my working files). I had to leave this restore over the weekend (it's my work computer), but it appeared to have worked this morning.
I've been very careful in what I've done since, trying to keep an eye on any processes, apps or combination of things that could trigger a shutdown, but – so far – I've not been able to replicate the issue. It may be that a vital system file became corrupted during my work or during the kernel panic – hence the repeated panics – but I don't see how that would explain the same issue on my clone drive.
I'm also being exceedingly vigilante for any signs of disc issues, just in case the EFI warning is an issue.
Interestingly perhaps, I was using Illustrator CC at the time, and I've had experience (or rather a colleague has had) of Illustrator files causing the Finder to freeze, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was Adobe / Illustrator / CC related. I also know that the graphics card in this particular Mac pro is a little buggy, and I've had GPU-related kernel issues in the past, too.
Hopefully the problem won't resurface, but I'll keep this thread open for a while, just in case.
    Thanks again Arthur.

  • Mac Pro shuts down after setting up RAID (HELP!)

So, I recently purchased a rev 1 Mac Pro and decided to setup a RAID using 4 750gb WD drives. I am not using a RAID card, simply using Disk Utility.
I first combined drives in bays 1 and 2 (striped) and then combined drives in bays 3 and 4 (striped) to give me essentially two 1.5tb drives.
I then created a mirrored RAID using the two striped raids so that I would have the speed of a striped RAID with the safety of a mirrored RAID.
Once I did this, it showed up as one hard disk on my desktop (I was booting with an external). I then cloned my external drive to the new RAID disk on the desktop, and did so successfully.
However, now when I try to boot from the RAID, it chimes, the Apple appears, and then the Mac Pro shuts down. I tried holding down option and all 4 drives appear. I tried booting from a different drive, and the same thing happens. I should also note that the firmware bar flashes on the screen before shutting down (looks like a really long pill).
Any ideas? Does it sound like I did something wrong? I hate to start from scratch, as it takes all night to clone my external drive to the Mac Pro. Thanks for any help.

Hello, Hatter. Thanks so much for the information. I went with the information from the Macworld article (I believe) "RAIDing the Mac Pro" and according to it this setup was supposedly a great idea. But, yes, it's not working out so perhaps not in this case.
So, I have four brand new 750gb Caviar Black drives installed. If I understand you correctly, I should stripe 3 disks together, then use a 4th as backup (using Time Machine?). So, if I use the drives I have, I'll have a striped configuration that gives me 2.25TB of space, and a 750gb hard drive for backup. That technically would work for now, as I have about 660gb of data on the system (although in the future I'd need to swap out that 4th drive for a 2TB.
So, if that is what you're suggesting, would you mind telling me exactly how I do that? I think I understand, but just want to make sure as this is my first Mac Pro and first time setting up a RAID. Thank you so much for your response.
p.s.: I'm guessing I'll need to do a fresh start and clone my external drive all over again, correct?

    Hi aaliyafrommarkham,
In order to troubleshoot this, I would recommend that you start with an SMC reset. Information on this procedure can be found here:

And maybe you don't talk to too many people but I've been on many forums on different websites where people have had similar problems and a lot of people in the store were having battery problems where they were draining too fast. What I learned is that all the people who did not download the updates are good. There phone is working the same. The people who have, they're having battery problems
I have downloaded every update and my battery life is better than any previous iPhone I have ever owned. I see posts from hundreds of people every day, and this is not a commonly reported problem. While there are a few random reports of battery problems, it is no more than I have seen for any other model or any other version of iOS in almost 8 years. Usually problems of rapid battery drain can be traced to bad apps (FaceBook is the worst offender) or corrupt data being synced from iCloud or other sources (gmail, Windows Live, Yahoo, etc).
The simple test is to restore the phone as New. Do not create any email accounts. Do not install any apps. Do not enable FaceTime or iMessage. Do not enable Twitter or any other social networking app. Use it for a day and check the battery usage. You will find that it is working well.

I just downloaded Lion and now my computer just shuts down for no reason. What is its problem?

I recently made the same mistake.  The thing to do is download the new Quicken Essentials for MAC.  After you install the new version follow the instructions on how to transfer your old files.  There is a way, it just takes a little time and, if I remember correctly, it takes the info from your quicken backup files. Hopefully you had auto back up on and your files are intact.  I didn't and reconstruction was a bear but entirely possible.  The new Quicken is quite different but seems to work quite well.  Good luck.

  • My MacBook just shuts down! Need some advises...

    Hey guys,
how are ya? I have a big time bad issue. Since yesterday my white MacBook (1,83 GHz, 1GB RAM) just shuts down, without any anouncements. When I tried to start it again, it stucks for some secs and then all of a sudden it shuts down again. Today I had some buddies here over. They saw my new Apple Macbook. I thought I show them some Apple style thangs. What happened after I showed them something on the internet??? It shuts down! Just like that! I felt like a piece of shoot. My buddies were laughing! And I thought: Oh no! Not again.
What in gods name is that issue? Am I the only one? What shall I do? I just want a MacBook that works. Why did I switch? It's just like windows...

I've used Macs for almost 20 years, and I've had to use PCs in recent years for work stuff. I thought the MacBook was the answer to my prayers. I sold a perfectly reliable iBook and Dell Inspiron to purchase the MacBook.
Once they get the shutdown issues fixed, I think it'll be worth what I paid for it, but it's definitely frustrating. Don't lose faith in Apple. This kind of thing happens to everyone, but I sure do wish I had put off my MacBook purchase.
I was supposed to have my logic board replaced on Monday, but guess what? The replacement logic board was defective.
    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhrrrrrrrgggghhhhh!
I swear, all I want is a public admission by Apple that they screwed up with some of the first MacBooks. Seriously. Everyone makes mistakes, and electronics can't always be perfect out of the box. I know that. I just the psychological satisfaction that will come with an admission on their part.
It happened with the discoloration. I went into an Apple store with my "PinkBook" in early June, and they said it was obviously my fault. I can't wait to go back there and ask them how many stained MacBooks they've seen.
CrapBook...I mean MacBook (1 gig RAM; 120 gig HD); 20" iMac Core Duo (1 gig RAM; 250 gig HD) Mac OS X (10.4.7)
